I've watched this video several times now, and loved it each time. Whoever had the idea of matching Manhattan Transfer up with Weather Report should have received an award of some kind. Maybe "Most Serendipitous Musical Match of the Decade". I'd vote for that.

World class music forever! I´m Austrian like Joe Zawinul and I saw him 3 times at Jazz concerts in Vienna. I´m also happy that I have seen Manhattan Transfer live one time in Vienna and later even in Klagenfurt. But to see them (Weather Report and Manhattan Transfer) together in a concert must be pure delight!

To be honest. It was not. The arrangement was not good. The mixer was absolutly terrible and the guitar out of tune.

He was there the year before. I was at the "meltdown" concert and to be honest, Jaco killed it. He got into beef with the band and they walked off. He then did a bass solo of Purple haze and I was blown away but he looped it, put the bass down and walked off stage.
Weather Report never came back but Jaco decided to do a solo of Purple Haze for about a minute and a half until they turned the stage and Cosby introduced the next act. That solo from Jaco was amazing. I mean if it's around, it's some of the best bass solo work I've ever seen live.

    5,000 light years from Birdland
But I'm still preachin' the rhythm
    Long-gone, uptight years from Birdland
An' I'm still teachin' it with 'em
Years from the land of the Bird
An' I am still feelin' the spirit
    5,000 light years from Birdland

Where we went to pat feet
    Down on fifty-secon' street

That they named it after Bird

The jazz corner of the world
An' the cats they gigged in there
    Were beyond compare
    Birdland - I'm singin' Birdland

    No mo', no mo'
Down in Birdland, that's where it was at
    I know, I know
Back in them days bop was ridin' high

    Their first Birdland gig
To play in Birdland is an honor we still dig
    Yeah...that club was like...

    Yes, indeed, he did
Yes, he did, Parker played at Birdland

Bird named it, Bird made it, Bird heard it

Total swing! bop was king, yeah
    Down in Birdland
Bird would cook, Max would look, yeah
    Down in Birdland
Come in pairs down them stairs, lose y' cares
    Them that dares gits it!
Pay the gate, don't be late
    It's a date! - whattay' know
    If y' dig, then you'll dig, it's a groove
    Quite a groove, 'cause y' t' move
Come in twos, pay your dues
    What can you lose?
    Just your blues!
    So lose them!
The band swingin' one and all and what a ball!
    Yeah!
Music is good, music is better than good
    Pretty good
    Very nice
Really very good - things are bein' like they should
Very good, very good, very good
All y' gotta do is lend an ear
    An' listen to it
Then y' dig a little sooner than soon
You'll be diggin' everything diggin' all the music
    What a ball!
    How y' gonna figure out
A way t' bring it all about amid a
Lot o' other music on the set'n on
The scene know what I mean?
How y' gonna separate the music from the scene
'Gonna have t' keep the memory clean
Y' gonna hear a lotta' sound... a lotta soun'

I once saw a clip of Manhattan Transfer do this w/o Weather Report. Maybe it was American Bandstand or one of those musical shows from the 80s like AB. I cannot think of it right now, maybe someone will help me out with that. Anyway, I already knew that Josef Zawinul of Weather Report had written the song and the band recorded it. Thank goodness one the Manhattan Transfer group acknowledged that during a brief interview. I was about to say," HOLD ON...WHAT! You best own up! Tell them who originally wrote and recorded the song that you somehow got lyrics to!

Say what you want about Playboy, Hefner invested in jazz. The festival gave lots of artists a good gig and exposure to a wider audience. And fun to see the crowd on their feet dancing!

I met thèse fine gentlemen in a diner just outside Jacksonville many years ago. We talked for many minutes and I was impressed by their consumption of waffles in syrup. Very impressive.

I was at this concert. My parents are clapping @ 1:48 (black balding man 6-5" and white lady to his right) and pops at 6:24 is the tall man with a sport coat (pops was odd) taller than everyone.
It was a great concert. I was running around because I was 18 and looking for girls but it was one of the best Playboy Jazz festivals I went to and I've been to about 10 of them.

Wayne did not do theatric dance gestures - he just played. His other band members danced and emoted. He stayed within himself. But it didn't detract from the music.
