Worked as a sound engineer on two shows on this tour in April of 83. Will never forget starting to Mic up Omar's Kit and there on his hi hat side was a trash can lid with a hole drilled through it attached to a cymbal stand. He uses it sparingly on this track as a ride cymbal. Asked him how many lids he went through before finding one with a good sound. He said hundreds. Hands down, no contest the best live drummer I ever saw and I saw most of em. Impeccable Time, Incredible Chops.
Wow ... Great ! Thanks for sharing Your memories with us. I love Hakim ... he and Victor made a great r.s. ! I wish to Victor to get well soon, he is a great strong guy
I remember this tour and seeing Omar for the first time at the Birmingham Odeon. I agree 100% he totally "ripped me a new one that night"! In those days you could actually go to the front of the stage at the end of the show and shake hands with the band...I'll NEVER EVER forget it what an experience!!!
Was at the Domino Theory show in Nashville about a year after this, had been out of touch with music for a couple years traveling and at some point during the show I yelled out "Go Jaco". This was the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was looking at me it seemed. Some guy behind me said "that's Victor Baily you idiot". #dumbass Great show....lol.
i saw joe and his band in one of his last concerts in austria im so happy about that, he is an austrian, from vienna i will never forget this exprience to see him, his music is great and forever .......
Thank you Jazzz65. A 26 year itch finally scratched. I have a tape off the radio of this from Dominion theatre 1985. Lost about a minute from 8.25 as I turned the tape (remember that? didn't notice it had ended) Also got to see the fun between Joe and Omar that has the crowd in stitches in London. The whole band on fire. Got to be one of the best WR posts. Thanks again.
I went to this concert"Weather Report Night" in summer 1983 at Yomiuri Land East. Very Fnatastiv Night! The new Hero was born ,his name was Omar Hakim. Incredible drumming! Look at Zawinul vs Omar !
Absolutely Amazing!!! I first got into Weather Report in the 70's. That's when I got my first drum Set. I heard them hangin with my Uncle wes. Thanks Uncle Wes. You sealed ny Love of Jazz...
Jazz65, I invite you to watch an listen to an older and very different version of the song I posted quite a long time ago. Surely you will like it. Search it as "Omar Hakim Weather Report Where the moon goes" Thank you very much for uploadin this one. Ne ve get tired of seeing the duel between Omar and Joe.
definantly lacks the spirit of the original members.I don´t know why this few chord african chanting dominated zawinuls composing after Jacos sad passing. But I like it of couse very much anyway

Wayne Shorter - can't be denied that he laid the unique seal with his melodic lines and amazing arpeggios.
これもLive Under the Skyか。名演奏の数々は、アーティストと観客の熱の相互作用によるもので、アーティストにこの演奏をさせたことを日本人は誇りに思っていい。オリンピックなんかより、これをもう一度やってほしい。
Omar Hakim's performance is brilliant in this performance. A very under-rated drummer IMO.
Under-rated? Hell, he won every award and was world famous.
Agreed.
RIP Victor Bailey.
What a fantastic conversation between Zawinul and Bailey.
One of the many very cool things about WR/Zawinul is that there was no one doing anything like this at the time, and he wasn't derivative of anything.
8:12-8:36 When Joe changes the octave and goes into that frenzy, my face melted...
Weather was the very first band that made me love jazz and made me understand the concept of what jazz really was and is and will always be
Joe Zawinul is Fantastic Musician. I've met him in 1994 and 2006 in Vilnius and it was my best time in my life.
Omar always has that signature dry snare drum sound & I love it!
I remember this tour and seeing Omar for the first time at the Birmingham Odeon.

The original World Music fusion band, and still the greatest ever. My desert isle records include Heavy Weather, Black Market and Mysterious Traveler.
One of the best renditions I've ever heard!
Superb!
the keyboards at 4:23 reminiscent of Terry Riley's "Rainbow in Curved Air"... delightfully playful and free...

Omar Hakim. I beg his pardon.

epic solo from wayne.... the musicianship it's just beyond words!
I learned about this group in high school. This is what made me fall in love with jazz in as a heart felt soul .
Thank you so much for uploading this. I can't truly put into words how thankful I am. I really had a moment with this one.
This is EXACTLY why I always loved Omar's playing. Killer feel and a great approach to the instrument.
...and then they said: "Let's play some MUSIC!" Brilliant.
This act was the start of my music freak life.
When I was high school student.
Thanks for posting!
