      Oliver Harper already own it. However, I found something out that I don’t think even you were aware of. After Gene Roddenberry was given a private screening of that rough cut, it is true that he didn’t like the military-esqe parts of the plot. But when he saw the final moments of the film, including the shot of the Enterprise flying into the sunset, he felt that was the right way to give the original crew a proper send off.

    • @darthkurland
      @darthkurland 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, just two days later, on October 24, 1991, Gene Roddenberry died of a massive heart attack at age 70. Both this film and the Next Generation episode, “Unification” were dedicated to him. The entire “Trek Nation” mourned his passing. Bill Shatner said, “when Gene died, the ‘Star Trek’ we all knew died with him that day.”

    One thing you missed Oliver... During the court scene Gen. Chang's outburst- "don't wait for the translation, answer me now!" is a direct quote of Ambassador Adlai Stevenson talking to Soviet Ambassador Zorin at the U.N. during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It's another Cold War reference, not Christopher Plummer being Hammy. Other than that... great review as always! :)

I saw the ripple effects on the Armed Forces as the need to as big a military wasn't there anymore. This film was the true bridge between the original cast and the Next Generation crew. The main difference between The Next Generation Era and the era of 1701A (and 1701) is their relationship with the Klingons. The Federation-Klingon story arc which began in "Errand of Mercy" came full circle in this film, with the prediction made by the Organians coming true, that Humans and Klingons would become fast friends, an idea Kirk's generation rejected when they first heard it. By the end of this film, it was becoming a reality, and it was a nice nod to Worf's backstory that Khitomer became the summit of the peace treaty. It makes sense that the Romulans destroyed the Klingon outpost there decades later, perhaps because it was a reminder to them of their failure to subvert the peace between the Klingons and the Federation. Ironically, their attack leads to Worf's adoption by humans, and Worf becomes one of the most significant figures in Klingon history, saving the Empire's relationship with the Federation on multiple occasions (but that is another story). The Undiscovered Country ends with an optimism which The Next Generation is able to step into, picking up where the original cast leaves off.

    • @KRSsven
      @KRSsven 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      We also learn in TNG that what truly cemented the relationship between the UFP and the Klingon Empire was the Enterprise-C's brave attempt to stop the Romulan sneak attack at Narendra III. If that event had not happened, we know that relations would eventually sour again and by the 2360s a war had broken out between them. The Klingons finally accepted that the UFP's Captains could be as fearless as they were in the face of impossible odds.

      @@KRSsven And a FEMALE UFP Captain, no less! I guarantee you, Capt. Rachel Garrett and the crew of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C are the only humans to have attained the Klingon Empire's highest honor...which is to be counted amongst the Empire's Honored Dead...
      A most prestigious honor indeed, considering how highly the Klingons value battle...those who die in battle for the Klingons are revered for all time. I have no doubt that in the Star Trek universe of the 24th century, klingon children are told of the story of Narendra III and of the brave Federation crew of the Enterprise C who fought alongside the Empire to defend the colony from the Romulans and died in their efforts, fighting until the bitter end when their ship was destroyed...
      Believe me...if that noble sacrifice didn't result in that ship and crew becoming regarded as Honored Dead amongst the Klingons, there is something wrong indeed...😁

    I think this was my favorite TOS movie.Wrath of Khan is better, but as a Star Trek fan, I think VI was a fitting conclusion for TOS.
    It was somewhat allegorical (touching on the fall of the wall and "glasnost", and what peace might mean between cold warriors), it had good action sequences/suspense, and it still retained the essence of who the characters were. It was Trek through and through.
    It's a pity TNG never had a film that "concluded" things satisfactorily like Star Trek VI did for TOS.

    Star Trek 2-6 form a nice story arc regarding Kirk and Klingons, Kirk's son, Genesis, Spock etc and the general evolution of the Galaxy and the careers of the characters. It would have been even better had Kirstie Alley played Savvik the whole time (and if Savvik were the traitor in #6 as originally planned). -David Warner was also Sark, Dillinger, and the Master Control Program in Tron (aka all three major antagonists), and was Lovejoy, the main antagonist's second-in-command, in Titanic. Another British actor who plays bad guys often. Having Goldsmith's theme in this movie would have so been out of place in this Trek entry. The dark and brooding score is perfect for this film and frankly, the closing music is fresher and more uplifting than the tired Goldsmith main theme (remember it was being used on a weekly show at this point) would have been in its place.

    Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991 was the final Star Trek movie that featured the cast from the original series. Star Trek Generations was the first Star Trek movie to feature the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. it continues with Star Trek: First Contact in 1996 and Star Trek: Insurrection in 1998 until it ended in 2002 with Star Trek: Nemesis.

      +peppy hare I can agree that DS9 was incredible. But I am *not* a fan of STVI (or STV). For me, it's TOS, TAS, and the First Four flicks. (The saga of the original crew ends with smiles as the NCC-1701-A comes into view.) The fifth and sixth films were just too damn cheesy ... with simplistic plots and little to no originality. I mean, if you're a TNG superfan, I could easily see why you'd like TUC as it's built as a bridge for the two series. Otherwise, bleh.

    I loved the scene where Uhura struggles with Klingon. First it shows the crew in a plausibly difficult situation. After all they are all more or less average individuals, not super heros. Something newer Sci-Fi movies often lack. Second it's great as a symbol that they are all getting old and it's a new era where you maybe should start to learn Klingon. The scene with Bones is pretty similar. Sure, he might have had lessons on Klingon anatomy some decades ago (or maybe not, during TOS it would have been rather unlikely to have a Klingon patient) but he's in a stressful situation and he's also getting old and probably doesn't actually do much in surgery anymore.

    The James Bond series was the champion of re-using actors in different roles. The most notorious example to me was having Charles Gray, who played a British agent in "You Only Live Twice," come back as Ernst Stavro Blofeld of all people in "Diamonds Are Forever." I understand they did that actor recycling because the productions became like college reunions, with previous actors coming by just to hang out. So, they'd just use their old friends from the previous films in the current film they were making, too.

    It's not just the action pace of the new so-called Star Trek movies that blows chunks, but the weak writing with awful characters and plots, not only rehashed and ripped off from elsewhere, but also just poorly executed. The special effects and rapid pacing with lots of popcorn munching-inducing action do not save the Abrams travesties that dare to call themselves Star Trek.
    THIS movie, however, is at least decent. It has a good plot and, of course, a good cast playing good characters. That's something all of these classic Trek movies had, even the relative failures. As ho-hom as Star Trek III was, for instance, it still had Christopher Lloyd playing a Klingon, which to me was something of a saving grace for that film. This one has that awesome Klingon villain who, as you point out here, was very well cast. I don't mind the Chancellor being played by the same actor who appeared as a human in V; he might as well have been in this movie alone, and V might as well have never existed. That movie was almost Abrams-level bad. Not quite, but close.

    Actors playing multiple characters over several series is a Star Trek hallmark. And Christian Slater's cameo was because his mother was the casting director for the film and got him the cameo because he's apparently a HUGE fan of Star Trek. According to IMDB, Slater never cashed the modest paycheck he received for the appearance and instead had it framed.

    According to William Shatner's "Star Trek Movie Memories", Konner and Rosenthal had little to do with the writing of VI. It was Nick Meyer and Denny Flynn who did the work after Leonard Nimoy and Nick Meyer had a walk on the beach to come up with the concept for the film. Konner and Rosenthal were foisted on Leonard by the studio, and Leonard met with them despite his misgivings, and it wound up going before the WGA to settle things. Check it out.

    It's funny that you highlight Kirk saying "FIRE!" while also mentioning the expanded soundtrack release. As the owner of the original Star Trek VI soundtrack, I was very disappointed that in the track "The Battle for Peace" builds up to that moment but immediately cross dissolves into the next bit of music with the Enterprise and Excelsior firing on the Bird of Prey. Getting into the moment when listening to soundtracks, not having that one second of blank space so I can shout "FIRE!" myself was really aggravating. The expanded soundtrack thankfully rectifies that by not only allowing the piece to finish, but also giving us that much needed moment of silence.

    It's beautiful to me that Gene died when he did. His last public act on Earth was to call up the director of the new Trek and demand a quarter of the scenes be cut. That's just so fitting considering his contentious relationship with the franchise, he really took it all the way to the grave. It's ironic that that the cold war and the Klingon war both ended in a peace that 'Gene vs the studio' war would never see.

    I really loved the motion picture director's cut released in 2001 really helped the film alot. Although I was already a big fan of the film. I'd love to see a review on it Oliver. Again great job, this review was excellent brother thumbs up!!!

    VI is my favourite after II. I hadn’t watched it in a while… and this got me pumped to throw it on. No regrets!

    Cool! Oh, and Kirk said "where no *one*" as well.

    I still remember the first night I first watched this film. It was premiering on tv, I was a kid staying over my grandparents place. My uncle grew up as a huge TOS-era Trekkie decades earlier so seeing Captain Kirk on the tv was nothing new for my grandmother. I saw maybe the first quarter of the film before I had to go to bed, I really remember liking what I saw and hoping I could see the rest. Decades later, I got it in a VHS boxed set and enjoyed it, but I got a much deeper appreciation for it when it was released as a special edition 2-disc dvd.

    Nichelle was correct, Uhura would know Klingon like the back of her hand! Good insight

    This movie, for me, is the absolute pinnacle of all Star Trek.
