We're of a similar age and I really enjoy your reflections on certain movies and their associated games and soundtracks as part of your upbringing; you're doing a fantastic job. I'd be keen to see you do a retrospective on: Apocalypse Now; Werewolf in London, or even the Stephen King's IT mini TV series come movie release. Keep up the good work!

I know you'll never read this, but I enjoyed your very positive and informative video on one of my favorite franchises. You really captured the excitement and love that went into this relatively low budget film. I feel like you understand exactly what makes these films so lovable by the audience. Thank you!
In my opinion, what made Tremors good is the same thing that made Ghostbusters good, fun characters, good effects, interesting ideas and everything is resolved in a satisfactory way. Our main characters start out on the bottom and work their way to the top using teamwork and their wits, and most importantly, the audience has FUN. We get scared when the monsters appear and cheer when our heroes overcome. A masterpiece? No. An original story? No. Unique and memorable? Definitely. It earned its fanbase.

To be honest, the appeal is that we know these premises are ... dumb. Now by dumb, I don't mean insultingly stupid to our intelligence. They're dumb in that they have no grand complexity to them, but simple and fun. Great comment btw, I gladly agree!

They took the "ground is lava" game and developed it into a monster movie. That's probably why it resonanted with me so much when I watched this as a kid.

I remember after I saw this I couldnt walk on the grass for weeks. When ever my sister wanted to jump on the trampoline in the back yard I would get as close to it as I could with out touching the grass and then sprint for it. Stupid underground monsters.
This series really makes me appreciate how skilled this industry was back in the day.

Some of our lighting choices had to be based on matching the changing weather from the live action shoot, in which---especially in the first week or so of the shoot---was occasionally overcast, partly cloudy, cold, and even rainy. (I recall snow flurries on one day early on.) Same with some of the full-size, live-action shots on location: Some were shot under sunny conditions and some on overcast or partially-overcast days. A few of our shots were done while the film was still being edited, and we were matching the early cuts as reference, which, in some cases were later changed. But this is a nice review, and pretty comprehensive. I am very glad this film found a following, and was very happy to re-team with the producers/director for TREMORS 4. Thanks for your very well-done retrospectives!!!
One of my favorites rewatchable movies. So funny, witty, and even though it is about monsters and death...it is charming and never feels dark. Great vid Harper, glad I found this channel.
The older I get, the more I appreciate this movie.
An interesting premise, solid buildup, setup and payoff, fun characters, didn't take itself too seriously, fantastic practical effects.
And the Burt basement scene.
Its the uniqueness of the monsters and when you finally realize how dangerous they are coming from under the ground, especially when they've eaten folks you've known all your lives.
This movie is one of those films that just instantly makes me happy! Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are so perfect and you buy into their friendship immediately. The rest of the town's residents are note-perfect as well! I love the practical effects of the graboids! It's a film that has a simple premise, but its cast, script, and direction elevate it into something special. It's a practically perfect B-level monster movie that is A-level due to the many talents involved! Wonderful review, Oliver! Thanks for giving Tremors the attention it deserves!
I was in college in West Texas when I saw this movie. So I lived in a similar environment and my buddy grew up on a ranch. What made this movie work was how the two leads were just absolutely incompetent as ranch hands/fix-it guys. (Kevin Bacon hammering his own fingers). They were completely incompetent and stupid - and yet they become accidental heroes. The gun crazy survivalists also hit the mark! Perfect. I think we saw this movie at least three times in the theater just laughing hysterically.
"Hey, come check this out. I found the ass end!" One of my favourite lines in the film.
These reviews have so much depth to them. Tremors was an excellent B movie. Much better than those stupid Sharknado type films.

Yeah, its not like its TRYING to be silly, its silly from the outside looking in, whereas for the characters, shit has hit the fan in a big underground way.

@SaveTheWorldRadio This is one of the things I miss most due to Hollywood today. B movies that are actually good. There doesn't seem to be good writers in general anymore except for a few.
The practical effects are so good.
"Runnin' ain't a plan. Runnin's what you do when a plan fails!" Lol
this movie is one of the few times when I went in expecting a horror movie and didn't get what I expected but was completely charmed nonetheless. Leading up to this, the trailers and poster really made it seem like more of a horror movie. I think this was conscious, because the opening of the movie also has a lot of horror elements.
But the great part about this movie are the human characters. I gotta give credit to all the actors, who really bring this little town alive. There really aren't any bad characters, anyone you'd be rooting to die. So by the end of the movie you see them coming together and everyone using their strengths to find a solution, and when they succeed you cheer along. That's always good for the ending of a movie.
The only exception to the "bad" character is Burt, who initially comes off as an arrogant lunatic. In the scene where he and his wife are attacked in the basement, you're frustrated because they won't just listen to Kevin Bacon trying to warn them. If this was a horror movie, they'd would have met a gruesome end. But that scene is pivotal, because their crazy gun collection actually pays off. Despite knowing nothing about the creatures, they manage to kill one of the bigger ones. Then everything turns around in the movie, and you end up rooting for Burt along with the others (even a little more since he has that sweet elephant gun)

Brent, Steve and Ron are the best! (We also returned and did TREMORS 4---miniatures, inserts, shot all the plates and re-did a couple of live action (on-set) creature shots)

This film had quality writing. I expected Burt Gummer and his wife to die fighting the monster in order to show how badass the monster was. (I also know that Hollywood producer types don't like right wing gun nuts very much, so I thought the Gummers' over the top love of guns was setting them up for some kind of karmic retribution.) But to my surprise, the Gummers not only didn't die, they kicked the monster's ass! I cheered when that happened. Not many filmmakers would allow the heroes to gain a decisive victory with so much time remaining before the ending. But that made things so much more tense as you realized that the monster was going to have to "up its game" in order to gain an advantage and seem like a threat again...
Burt was a bit paranoid and a gun nut, but he wasn't stupid. He locked and loaded, even with a short trip, as he said, "those bastards are gonna be on us every inch of the way!" And he made those black powder bombs.
Hollywood would never portray them this well in this day and age.

This was 1990. Hollywood is way different now. The gummers would be dead and also Earl and Val would be an interracial homosexual couple.

The swedish title is "the threat from the underground", which I think is an awesome title for a B-movie!
Regarding interesting title translations: During the 80s there was a weird trend to make references and puns to other films. The movie "Foul play" was translated to "The girl who knew too much" in swedish, since it was like a parody of "The man who knew too much". After it became a hit, all Goldie Hawn films were all named "The girl who...", for instance Private Bejamin became "The girl who was in the military service" :D
Same thing with the Mel Brooks films. After "Springtime for Hitler", everything became "Springtime". So Spaceballs is called "Springtime for Space" in swedish.

Your retrospective reviews are like reliving my early teens. I think my brothers and I watched Tremors over 50 times.
If it was a Joe Dante film the two road workers would have been Robert Picardo and Dick Miller.

My family rented this from our local milk bar when they, for a very short time, started renting videos. I was either nine or ten, glued to the screen watching it, then tiptoed the toilet after it ended in order to avoid being eaten by a graboid. To me they were real. Loved every second.
I had no idea how they did the effects until seeing the special features on the dvd which I didn't watch for a long time because I didn't want the illusion broken.
Also if you're looking for a poster of it I recommend the Japanese release. Great artwork.

"Tremors" is the greatest creature feature ever made. It was literally ground-breaking cinema.

In Kevin Bacon's Logitech commercial, it opens with a Tremors poster right behind him, a graboid sculpture in his front yard, he quotes Valentine and mentions Tremors by name. He's definitely come around :)
Wouldn't it be great if you could erase specific memories from you mind. Imagine being able to watch Tremors over and over for the first time, you'd just be walking around with a permanent smile on your face all the time :)
I probably first saw Tremors when I was 3, I'm not kidding I was so young I don't even remember when I first saw it. I've loved the franchise since.

Born in '85 here. This was the perfect movie to catch on saturday afternoon tv in the early 1990s.
Same. I saw it in a blockbuster as an infant, and have been a diehard fan since. I have the bluray and dvds of all of the releases, including the tv show.
same here dude, it was a favorite of mine as a kid (born in '80). me and my sister watched this unrelentlessly throughout our childhood and im a huge fan... of the original.

I saw it when I was like 5 - 7 and I watched the sequels as a grew up. I still love the first one.
Something I always loved about the movie, but wasn't really able to properly understand or express till I got older, was just how real it felt. Not necessarily the credibility of the premise, but the characters. The way they talk to each other, interact, you feel less like you're watching a movie and more like you're watching real people; little moments, like how when, after the first graboid is killed and they're walking home, and Earl's foot falls into a gopher hole and he screams bloody murder. As a kid that was hilarious to me, it's still funny, but it's also something that you could see happening genuinely in real life, either when presented with that situation or even in mundane situations.
Some of the best movies ever made were done with a small budget.
One of my favorite movies growing up! I couldn't even begin to guess how many times I watched this, still great after all these years.
Ya know, I've seen this movie like 50 times and I never really noticed that before. The way the score changes in the third act. And yeah. It changes for the better. I mean, the early music is good for informing you who these people are and what life is like for them. But the later stuff is definitely more emotionally effective. Feels like a reward for making through the half-way point. Maybe, despite their intentions, having it split like that was actually the best thing for the movie. Happy accidents.
This was a movie that my Nana and I really loved watching together when I was a kid. It's really odd that you posted this on her birthday. It's a few days from the day she passed 3 years ago so I'll give this one a watch soon. You've reviewed quite a few movies she introduced me too so I'm often reminded of her while watching your videos. I love your channel man!
The best shot scene in movie history is when they think Burt is dead when the radio goes out . But after about 3 seconds you just hear gun shots echoing across town . It puts chills on my spine

I seen Tremors 2 on Syfy on a Saturday afternoon a few months back. I was watching it thinking, "this is really dumb, but I really like it." Good balance of comedy and horror, and while some of the CG looked fake I loved the practical effects. The movie felt dorky, but that was part of the charm.
As always, great video. I can't get enough of your stuff; it's really helped to introduce me to some cool films from the previous decades.
Such a fun movie. This was a big part of my childhood, I can't even begin to comprehend my brother and I watched this after it came out. It holds up so well too. The humor especially is great.

I grew up on tremors 1 and 2, I remember getting all hyped for 3. and still get hyped for new sequels. it is a pretty good franchise
Norwegian here. I can confirm that we have had some strange movie titles in the past. In the 80s and 90s we put the word "Help" in every title. Some examples:
Airplane! = Hjelp, vi flyr (Help, we're flying)
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation = Hjelp, det er juleferie (Help, it's Christmas vacation)
This is Spinal Tap = Hjelp, vi er i popbransjen (Help, we're in the pop music industry)
Volunteers = Hjelp, vi får hjelp (Help, we're getting help)
Interestingly, the 1986 horror film 'Monster in the Closet' did not get the same treatment. Instead they went with the utterly untranslatable title 'Skapulf'.
I'm curious though: does marksommer actually mean "worm sommer"?
In swedish (my native language) marksommer (or rather marksommar) would be translated more like "ground sommer"...

Ulf is pretty much a name they made up, so it's translatable to; Closet-Ulf. Not that it makes any sense however. The worst with these silly names is that when you talk with anyone of these old classics, you do generally need to use these absurd translations or no one will know what movie you talk about. At least we didn't really go full Germany and dub everything as well! I'll go back and hide in my corner now.
Since I found this channel it's been a list I'm getting through of films I NEED to watch again.
I always liked that despite being a gun nut Burt actually follows practical gun safety the entire film. None of the guns in the rec room are kept loaded, he always double checks before he gives anyone a gun (and wisely didn't give a loaded one to the dumbass kid).
Just a few basic things that neatly avoid a lot of the needless accidental shootings/deaths you'd see in other actions movies or even real life.
There was a really savvy line in the 2nd film where Burt was explaining how serious Heather was about leaving him. He said "she sent for the HK". This refers to the HK91 which was regarded as the finest assault weapon in the world at that time. I've always wondered how many people got this great in-joke!

Apparently they dropped the F bomb in those sentences, so they had to be redubbed, because apparently, you can only get ONE F-bomb in PG-13, and Val had done that beautifully earlier.
I actually liked the "joyful theme" during the pole vaulting sequence, since it underlines the movies light hearted nature.
Anywho, really good movie which i greatly enjoyed watching, numerous times. The mix of horror and comedy just works.

I first saw Tremors on TV during New Year's Eve quite a long time ago, in my teen years. And then I saw it again the next New Year's Eve (along with Army of Darkness) and so those two movies became my "New Year's Eve" movies. And while I watch them every now and again (recently got the blu-ray for Tremors) I still feel that they are the definite end of the year movies for me. :D
I remember seeing this as a kid over the weekend then going to school on Monday and everyone was talking about it and how awesome it was. Perfect movie. :)
Fred Ward who played Earl Bassett in Tremors and Tremors 2: Aftershocks previously did Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff in 1983 and Remo Williams in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins in 1985. before Tremors, Fred Ward met Michael Gross while filming the Bete Midler-Lily Thomlin comedy from Disney's Touchstone, Big Business.
I was working at a Showcase multiplex as an usher when this film came out and can never disassociate it from Vic Reeves, as one afternoon he came in with two friends to watch it. Vic Reeves' Big Night Out had only been on Channel 4 for a couple of weeks at the time and I was literally the only person in the building who recognised him as he was yet to garner the fame the following years would bring him (and Bob). I spoke to him very briefly as he left the building. This film always has that strange association for me and whenever I see Vic Reeves on television I always think of Tremors.
Delightful film - actual characters, fantastic dialogue, great special effects (not cheating by having stuff happen at night).
This movie was filmed in Lone Pine, CA, which is the all-time classic location for westerns, as well as some monster movies and teen fright flicks. Tonnes of movies have shot there since the earliest days of cinema because of its spectacular scenery. It's unfortunate that none of the later entries in the series ever went back there. There is a museum there that has lots of memorabilia from the various productions, including "Tremors," which is well worth checking out if ever you're that way.
I've loved this movie since I was a little kid. I fist saw it on television on TNT or USA or whichever and instantly fell in love with it. As our esteemed presenter says here, it has exactly the right combination of elements. Val and Earl remain one of my favourite screen duos to this day for their energy and wonderful chemistry. I'd never heard before that Kevin Bacon didn't like the movie. Very surprising, since he does such an incredible job and makes Val such a memorable character. He is so convincing, I actually thought he was southern and was quite surprised to see him in other movies without his accent. Even all these years later, it still feels a little weird for me to hear him speak in his natural Pennsylvanian.
Anyway, great review as always, Oliver. You got it exactly right; anyone who hasn't seen this one owes it to themselves to seek it out as soon as they can. It's one hell of a film.
I donated the miniature market we built for efx scenes in TREMORS 4 to that museum. No idea if it arrived there safely, or if they put it on display. It was 1/4 the size of the full-scale market. Just FYI.

This movie was a good part of my childhood. I loved the Grabholds design and the subsequent designs. Though, I cannot stand the name Assblaster. Tremors is one of those B-rated movie series that I think is really good. It knows what it is, and while it does try to mix it up, it it always keeps true to its concept. As such, I love the second movie. The third movie is my least favorite. The other movies are surprisingly decent, with the second and fourth ones being my second and third, favorite respectively. And the latest one isn't half bad.
Grabholds? I always thought it was Graboids.

As for the Scaninavian title of the film, I read in Sweden that Mel Brooks films were re-titled using 'Springtime' as a 'Carry On....' prefix (so 'Young Frankenstein' became 'Springtime for Frankenstein)!! I love 'Tremors'. It's a really engaging film that makes great use of it's concept and characters and it doesn't go too far - it's always economical and quirky.
This movie takes me back to the USA Network in the mid 90's watching it on Sunday nights or Saturday nights at my grandparents house. Love the original, classic.
You've got to do a Deep Rising retrospective review. That movie is criminally underrated.
I remember seeing the film and been convinced I had to walk quiet for 2 days 😂😂 I think I was 5. Such a good film I love the practical effects but only like the first film. Solid monster movie still love it now I’m surprised Kevin bacon wasn’t keen on the movie that’s a shame as it really is a solid movie.

I absolutely love this film. I remember seeing it for the first time as a kid and it instantly became one of my favorites. The amazing part is how it still holds up today. That just shows you the power of in camera effects vs. CGI and when a skilled company has their heart in it. Also, a show premiering out of order happens more than i ever could have imagined
The silver mine in the 4th film is shown in the series, and in the 1st episode, Burt mentions that he'd had a supply of silver bars which were 'disseminated' when he blew-up his house back in the 3rd film.

One of my favorite B-movies.
I was working at a video store when Tremors was released on home video. A few weeks before its release, we received a full-length screener of the movie. I barely knew about the film, but watched it out of curiousity. Probably watched it about 20 times since then, and I enjoy it every time.
Tremors dates itself in one way, though: the portrayal of the survivalists, who are shown as being funny and wacky and not sinister or frightening in any way. We'll never see anti-government loners shown like that in a movie ever again.
There is a reason this films poster adorns my wall..along with Jaws, Terminator 2 and of course...Aliens. Excellent review good sir! This film as you pointed out has so much in the win category its a shame not that many people even know it exists. An amazing cast, great sfx that STILL hold up..and hell..the story is so simple but executed to a T! From Ac cross the pond in Cape Cod, MA - Thanks for the review! I just recently saw this movie for the first time, believe it or not. I don't know why I've never seen it before, I certainly knew of the premise, but I guess I just never got around to it or I thought it might be stupid maybe. Well, I loved it! Put most simply, it's just a whole hell of a lot of fun to watch! Another commenter here put in more detail why it works so well, and I agree with everything they said. I love the comraderie of Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward's characters and the townsfolk. Like Oliver, I'm not a fan of country music, but I was pleasantly surprised to find Reba McIntire in this film, I had not known she was in it, and I really liked her character. Speaking of, her and Michael Gross' characters were considered extreme back then, now, with Americas rediscovery of their love of guns, they are the norm! All in all, this is a great watch and I'm glad I finally got around to seeing it!
Man, I love it when you do a favorite of mine. You say a great movie for a Saturday night--I couldn't agree more. It's crazy, I just watched this movie last week for the first time in a long time. You may not like the mixed bag of scores, but I think it's part of what gives this film it's successful blend of comedy and horror. Thanks for this, man. Keep it up!

We had the tv edit recorded off tv on VHS. It was a classic of my childhood, we watched it almost every New Year’s Eve (and throughout the year), and I’ve kept that tradition into adulthood. Such a fun way to start the year off.
I watched it several times and it was always fun. I went for all four sequels as well, but there is no comparison.
I have this film on VHS, bought it at Goodwill back in 2015 and I enjoyed it. Great film.
I have the whole series on dvd and the 1st one is really a classic, love the series.
