      I'm at work listening to this in the background, So I might be wrong, but I don't think you mentioned how this movie was supposed to have an anti-gun message. With this team of bad arses being effectively useless against one creature. One of the most famous scenes showing the team level the jungle and not kill anything was supposed to show how pointless guns are.

      The Predator doesn't blow himself up to avoid accepting defeat, he does so to avoid humans claiming his lethal technology which could be used against his race.

    The Predator isn't playing unfair, the entire concept is to reflect how we hunt animals on our own world. We use high technology and superior intelligence against animals that have very little chance against us. The Predator at least gives us a chance and hunts intelligent creatures. We do not.
    Also, it doesn't kill itself out of petulance, it understands that it's existence and technology must remain hidden.

    • @charlesvan13
      @charlesvan13 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The stakes are uneven, of course. The animal wins if it escapes. The hunter wins if it kills the animal. So if hunting is a "sport" it's actually a single player game.

      That concept doesn't make any sense. Our intelligence is what set us apart from the animals. Many animals run much faster than we can run. Some of them are much stronger than we are. They have their strengths and we have ours. Because our intelligence is much more effective than their strengths, should we not use it?

    Predator is awesome, one of my favourite films. Predator 2 is damn good too, not quite up to the standard of the first, but a great sequel in how it expands on everything from the first.
    Predators was OK, but what really annoyed me about the flick was how crappy the Predators looked. They looked very fake in comparison to the first flick, which very much looked like a real, living creature. In Predators, the mouths looked really bad, sitting really unnaturally and looking really goofy. They also opened WAY too wide, which again, just added to the fakeness. It's irritating just how much CGI seems to have killed the art of great practical effects work like that. They could do so well in the '80s with a lot less budget and more limited tech...such a shame that the art of it has fallen by the wayside in favour of the cheapest CGI bid they can get.

    One of my favorite movies of all time, if not my second favorite, right behind Jurassic Park. I used to watch Predator all the time with my grandfather and my father. My Dad was the reason I love the movie and the franchise, while Grandpa used to watch it with me. As such, I love this movie and more importantly, the Predator itself. The Yautja species is amazing, with their culture and weapons. And Kevin Peter Hall, may God forever rest his soul, gave life and a soul to both the Jungle Hunter and City Hunter in the sequel. Thanks to him, the Yautja are now my favorite creatures in science fiction. I have my family to thank for it, and this retrospective made me feel nostalgic for the old times. Thank you, Oliver, you've made my day easier. This month is always hard for me as it's the anniversary of my grandfather's passing seven years ago. This and Jurassic Park always make me think of him.

But Dutch and his men were kept in the dark..For one thing the hostage were CIA-SAD agents (They were Dillon's friend) (When Dutch thought they were a presidential cabinet minister and his aide of the country). Secondary objective were Guerrilla documents (Again Dutch and his men were kept in the dark on that as well)..
      That was why Dutch was furious at Dillon when he pieced it together (IT WAS BULLSHIT ALL OF IT!!!)

    The only thing missing from this movie was that it didn't show Billy's death. But, add the other things like the insane fire down the entire jungle-scene, the sheer and brilliant suspense, action and characters, and it's pretty much all you'd ever want in an action movie. Although not mentioned nor pointed out often, but the only female in the movie also portrays her character greatly. She brings the alien/predator's seriousness and dangerousness into perspective once she tells the others some vital pieces about the predator, such as "the jungle became alive", "changes like a chameleon" and that they must've wounded the predator. Simply a wonderfully done action/sci-fi movie, without a doubt.

    Never thought about Dillion does kind of redeem himself before his death. He didn't have to go after Mac and could have stayed back and tried to reach the rendevous (chopper) with the rest of the crew and let another like Billy search for Mac. You really feel the panic in his face when he finally accepts what it is after them "Yea...I see it."

    Fantastic review of one of the greatest films of all time. They simply don't make films like that anymore. I couldn't agree more with you regarding the scene with Billy. They definitely should have shown at least a 5 to 10 second battle between the two of them. With his Billy's incredible senses, tracking skills and near telepathy (or some kind of paranormal gift), he seemed like the only one who could have had some kind of edge against the predator. I too can not get tired of this film!

    I was 13 when i saw Predator at the theater in 1987. I became obsessed. I made Dad take me to see it again at the drive in and spent the next year sketching and even dreaming of having it on VHS.
    When a movie came to VHS (possibly Robocop), it contained the Predator trailer. I set up two VHS machines and dubbed the trailer onto a tape. I watched the Predator trailer possibly 5 times a day until it was finally released. I was even dreaming that I already owned it and would awake shattered to realize it had all been a dream (sad I know).
    I can play the trailer in my head with every scene, dialog, beat, music dot and tiddle.
    When it was finally released i watched it twice in a row and then woke my younger brother and sister at 5am the next morning to watch it with me before school.
    That movie had a huge impact on a 13 year old me.

    Unrealistic part of Dutch's argument with Dylan: Dutch states that his team was "dropped into a meatgrinder!". What a grinder. Took the enemy totally by surprise. Took them all out with relative ease. Suffered one injury. Ventura's little scratch on his face. Most military would salivate for such a perfect win.

    Great job Oli for a classic that we all grew up with even if ITV did cut it to pieces on those late Saturday nights when we where far to young to be watching it. Always stumped myself at how McTiernan and Fox claimed it wasn't very successful as it ranks as the 7th highest grossing movie of 1987 ahead of the first Lethal Weapon even and the home video revenue must have been tremendous. Shane Black has one last chance to make a really great Predator sequel, I hope he dosen't screw up.

    Good review mate, There were rumors that their was an actual uncut version of the movie which had 7 minutes cut footage on a NTC VHS. The 7 minutes apparently shows the death of billy. The predator killing a rebel wandering in the jungle and more adaptation of the scrip with the hopper scene. I've searched for a while to see if this is true but it's just rumors I think. When Dillon gets his arm blown off look closely because you can visibly see his arm tucked behind his back.

    I think Predator and Stargate are Sci-Fis that are similar in that genuine mystery and suspense were present throughout most of the films, especially in the first act unlike movies today. Both I believe have become classics and could honestly make a top 20 sci-fi list if you consider the genuine excitement, entertainment, suspense and mystery they give you after seeing them countless times and being decades old. Does predator have the deep inner thought of Blade Runner? Of course not, but I challenge anyone to name 20 science fiction movies that hands down blow Predator out of the water.

    As close to action perfection as you can get, this movie flawlessly introduces you to the real A-Team of planet Earth, and promptly displays their unparalleled badassery in a firearms bonanza. The movie gives you plenty enough time to start appreciating every character in it, and for a brief period of time you might even forget you're watching a piece of science-fiction, where a superiorly badass alien is waiting just out of camera shot to take them out one at a time. By the time the team starts to be hunted, you're in almost as much shock as the characters that such horror has begun to unfold, and the sense of urgency becomes tangible. It's an incredible movie in a multitude of categories, and with some of the best pacing I've ever seen.

    This movie was made previously in 1981 by Walter Hill. It was called Southern Comfort, and instead of an alien, it had angry Cajuns in the swamps of the bayou. Before that, it was made as Deliverance in 1972, with hillbillies instead of an alien. Before that, it was made as Bataan, in 1943, with Japanese instead of aliens. Before that, it was made in 1934 by John Ford as The Lost Patrol, with Arabs instead of an alien. An isolated band of cut-off soldiers being picked off and decimated one by one by an unseen enemy...Really nothing new under the sun in commercial motion pictures. The various versions of The Most Dangerous Game also revolve around humans being hunted in the jungle. I saw Predator while on vacation in Utah in 1987, but didn't think much of it. The most memorable thing about it was that the air conditioning in the Salt Lake City theatre was broken (in August), so I felt like I was in the jungle with Arnold while watching the film. Your review is more interesting than the movie, IMO.

      @jimpepper7148 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kevin r. And in SOUTHERN COMFORT one of the Cajuns was played by Sonny Landham (PREDATOR's "Billy"). You could also go back further and look at BATAAN (1943) wherein 13 G.I.s are hunted one by one through the jungles of the Philippines.

      @OuterGalaxyLounge 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jim Pepper I did mention Bataan, and even also mentioned further back, The Lost Patrol. Read my whole thing. The Predator tie is interesting with Sonny.

    One thing I gotta correct you on Oliver, the predator doesn't activate his wrist nuke because he's a sore loser. Predators carry wrist nukes so they can be sure that if they're beaten their technology and weapons don't fall into the wrong hands.

    Predator 1 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was amazing.
    Predator 2 was awesome and fun but not as good as the first.
    Predators was awesome as well but again it's not as good as the first.

      I think Andrew is great actor but in many movies is necessary typology of characters, otherwise they have to portray character differently. Andrew could be good side character but alone he can not pull story go forward to grand finale aa was done. They had to or changed how he ended up with predators or replace him with more believable actor. Example: Bruce Willis is great actor but he does not fit to the role of such movies.

    When The Predator is Dragging Harkins at 10:22 thats Jean Claude Van Damme. That is the only stunt work scene for him and credit for it.

    This film has aged incredibly. The chemistry of the cast is unbeatable, if they had used the same principles for the resident evil series we really would've had a winner. Also its worth noting this is arnies best film as an actor, ollys right weather's has a great influence on him in this which made him much more than a dumb action hero. He was scrawnier than usual in this (although still massive arms) which sold him more as sf members are not bodybuilders by trade. He seems like John mclane in the jungle in the third act making him more relative and likable - like die hard.
    Also shout out to Bill Duke who was just brilliant as mac.

    -One thought: I think the Predator blows himself up to erase any trace he was there.

    • @OliverHarper
      @OliverHarper  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** well yes i think most of us know the Predator does that to erase his presence. But we are not told that as audience member, you kind of have to guess. In Predator 2 he just decides to blow himself up because he is losing so he starts the countdown but Danny Glover chops his arm off.

    Prior to the internet there was an entire industry based around intentionally making crappy games with minimal effort and basing them on various movies. It's kind of amazing that this was a success at fooling the consumer, because in theory it should only work once, but apparently not. I think video game rental stores definitely assisted since it allowed people to be willing to rent crappy games rather than buy them... but I learned early on, especially if the company was LJN to avoid and 95% of video games based on movies were bad because it was a scam to use a big name to get sales.

    I love this film more than anything, but there's something that takes me out of it every time. !Beware Pedant Warning! After seeing Billy spooked out as the film builds, they use his laugh (sample) just after Mac kills the boar. It's the same laugh as when he's told the joke earlier on. It just really strikes me as out of place, and undermines the tension... Although, I realise they needed to break it up after the slo-mo stabbing. Anyways, I'm off now to count toothpicks.
