Epic metal detecting hunt! 13 Silver coins found with Equinox!

For our final hunt of 2020 we set off to metal detect an old 1886 School site and turn of the century yard! We were armed with the Minelab Equinox 800 and Equinox 600. We never expected to find this much silver! This was one of our best hunts in years and was an absolute blast! .41 cents was a lot of money in the early 1900s...especially if a kid lost it.
I can remember my friend and I collecting Coke bottles, then taking them back to the old corner store. I can't remember how much we made, but we would each walk away with bag full of .01 cent candy. That was in the 70's.

Yeah Bob and I talked about that as well. I can't imagine losing that much money back then! We were thinking they held community events in schoolyard as well. Because kids didn't generally carry that kind of money back then. Especially in a very small farm town. Oh if our finds could talk?!

That's a great hunt! Do you have any tips on finding spots like this? Obviously historic aerials ect...but like anything that you look for in particular?

Thanks! Almost every town had a school. Just have to find it on old maps or aerials then find out who owns the property.

LOVE your videos - but would offer one bit of a recommendation. Every one of those silver coins - it was clearly visible to see where you had rubbed the dirt/mud off - all the scratches. I grant you, they are your coins and you can do as you wish - but you are telling the young / new detectorists that it's OK to rub the coins. Wouldn't you feel badly if someone rubbed a 1909-S VDB in great shape - rubbed like you do and scratches all over it? It is always best to wait till you can wash the coin with water only and gently "flow" off the dirt. Once u see that it's just a bullion value only coin, THEN you can rub to your heart's content. Teach the new detectorists the right way to see the date on a coin :-) Anyway - my new 800 is in the mail on it's way to me. I really like where you show the detector readings BEFORE you dig up the item :-)))

Yes that is good advice for new detectorists. Usually we can tell what coin is by the design and we won't rub it if it has potential to have numismatic value. We get excited sometimes and rub them more than we should. I personally don't sell any of my coins so I'm really not too worried about it. Each detectorist can choose how they want to treat their coins and I will leave that up to the viewers to decide. Thanks for watching and for the feedback! HH
