I'm a native spanish speaker which means that I instinctively know how to use each prepositions without having to think much about it, it just comes naturally , as expected because it's my native language. But if I've come to think of it , spanish grammar although doable can still be pretty tricky for non natives.I mean , even advanced users mix up the gender of a certain object from time to time , also props for all of you guys out there for looking forward to learning my native language. Most of us actually are quite charming and supportive whenever we come across a foreigner trying to learn the language, we don't tend to judge a foreigner based on how good/bad they speak the language , we'll help and guide them anyways if possible.
As always, probably the best on this topic on TH-cam. I like to listen to other instructors'teachings, but it seems that always one can count on Prof J's stuff to be first rate. I like how you speak at what's probably at normal Spanish conversational speed--since we have the sentences written out we can listen repeatedly with the "subtitles". Only criticism here--sometimes you don't translate the entire sentences. If you did so all the time, it would also help us build vocabulary. Still a superb video.

just wanted to say that im finding your videos really helpful, I'm currently taking out a gap year (before uni) out in spain in Córdoba and whilst i've been learning lots of spanish, its been good to have some structured lessons in grammer ect that your providing. Is there anyway you could create a link or send me your powerpoint slides so I can print them off? Professor Jason I have watched your video on prepositions, but I still have a question. How do I do when to use a preposition between a noun and an adjective? For example: la camisa azul (no preposition of course) and lentes DE contacto
+Susan Fox It's partly knowing the difference between an adjective (azul) and a noun (contacto). Nouns require a preposition because a noun cannot be used to directly modify another noun in Spanish; that's why we say "una casa de ladrillos" rather than "una casa ladrillo" for "a brick house" and "lentes de contacto" rather than "lentes contacto" for "contact lenses." Adjectives, on the other hand, do not require a preposition because they CAN be used to modify a noun directly, so we say "una camisa azul" rather than "una camisa de azul" (although we could say "una camisa de color azul" with almost exactly the same meaning -- "a blue-colored shirt" as opposed to simply "a blue shirt."
@@Dan_T_ryan ohh god time flies. This was 4 years ago jajajajajaja. Just an update - I got myself an excellent Spanish teacher two years back and became fluent in Spanish. My current level is between B2 and C1. :) But thanks for the correction, I appreciate it ! :)
He has some slides without translation and some slides with incorrect translation (or he's forgotten that the first few examples he listed had translations, while the final one had a sentence in English and then an unrelated sentence in Spanish), and that's only in the first five minutes or so. His slides are also too busy for a proper presentation. I cannot trust the first five minutes, so how can I trust the rest of the presentation?

I was initially thinking it was present progressive "estar + present participle" (I made a mistake in my original question. sentado should have been sentando) "Estamos sentando a la mesa" "We are sitting at the table". What am I missing?
What's a preposition? In English class, 5th or 6th grade, we learned this was the word that goes between the squirrel and the tree. The squirrel is in the tree, on the tree, up the tree, beside the tree, around the tree, and so on. This works for Spanish, French, German or any language that puts its prepositions between the verb and the object. Once you know what a subject, verb, and object are, you can figure out what a preposition is from the pattern example.
Strange yet I understand that for native speakers of English such explaination might work. Although it kind of complicates things I can say, as a native speaker of Slavic languages in which cases exist. We as kids learn help questions for each case- like 1.Nominative- "Who? What?,2.Case- "Who or what is absent?- end the list goes on for all cases . And later use them also for other European languages to identify a case. And to us in case of romance languages a preposition is an easy way to identify and construct a particular case. In other words to say "I'm walking with Maria" or "The dog is out of sight (2 case- who what is absent).I guess English way of instructing on preposition may possibly work somewhat for Spanish due to syntax which is more strict that in Slavic languages but in other languages with cases and prepositions there is much more syntactic freedom so to speak, so such rule of the tumb is very imprecise. Because one cannot be sure if a particular element of the sentence is in fact a preposition since due to cases, declinations etc. various elements within the sentence with exactly the same meaning unlike in English can be placed in various positions. So too me such rule of thumb is funny and exotic but also nt very precise and in a way actually making the grasp of grammar more harder. After all all those language dervie from Latin and Latin had cases. Some of those languages have more cases than Latin, some exactly the same amount as Latin. Yet for most cases in most European languages which derive from Latin this basic set of help questions works pretty well. And You could say it's basic transfarable linguistic skill for those Europeans who are non'native English speakers. In Spanish some prepostions play also other role- as indicator of what a speaker had in mind- be it direction, identification of the person performing the action in sentences expressed in passive voice, claryfication of the direction of movement (like "passing by/going through/ going to a particular destination which a speaker will reach in the future /going back from a particular place etc. But a lot of them actually just serve to form a particular case. Squirrel sounds lovely too me but if I had to rely on squirrel to master French or Spanish or Italian or even Swedish (the only from Germanic group aside from English somewhat related to this group) which I had a chance to study, I'm afraid grammar would seem like black magic to me. But thanks for this info. Now I will understand better why English native speakers struggle so much with prepositions. As for squirrel - I suppose it is also the matter of false friends between Spanish "preposicion" which actually stands for "a pronoun" in English and English word "preposition". Preposiciones de lugar in Spanish correspond with English "Adverbs of place" and fall into a different grammatical category than Preposiciones presented in this lesson. But if You ment Spanish "preposiciones de lugar" than the squirrel could work with expressions like "al lado de, sobre, debajo, enfrente de, encima de" which just locate a postion of a particular object with a 3 dimensional space in relation to other objects present in this space. As for position of adverbs of place within a sentence squirrel rule of thumb is so so. Plus in Spanish a subject which may matter for various reasons isn't always what an English speaker would expect it to be. Like in a sentence: Sobre mesa estan las galletas que me aptecen. "los galletes" not assumed "yo" who expresses his preference are the subject. Is adverb of the place between the main verb "apetecer" and the subject "galletas"? And which word is the subject matters since the gender and number of the verb "apetecer" has to agree with its subject. Not to mention that a sentence : "Las galletas que me apetacen estan sobre mesa." means exactly the same and is also correct if you take into account syntax and grammar rules.
