    Hey Guys, thought I should mention that sometimes I get my dollars (bucks) mixed up with my pounds (£'s) and Shereene's last moisturiser Cle De Peau Beaute Intensive Fortifying Emulsion can be bought at $180 or £140 (approx) - still think it is an overpriced (not so special) lotion - but someone out there loves it! Hope you are all staying healthy 😘

      Doesn't mean shit. Appeal to authority fallacy. Just because she has a doctorate doesn't mean she knows everything. For instance, she has a video on HA vs glycerin. She said glycerin has a lower molecular weight and can thus penetrate the skin as opposed to HA. She backed it up with science. So I thought great I'ma ditch HA and use glycerin instead. It fucked up my skin. It dried it out and it was very textured. So I did some research and it turns out they glycerin can actually cause an allergic reaction BECAUSE it has the ability to penetrate so deeply and it can be irritating when used in certain % in formulas. Her skin care advices are all based on scientific consensus but that doesn't mean she knows everything. There's more to it than scientific consensus on something. We are all individuals. Just because the scientific consensus is that glycerin is able to penetrate deeper doesn't mean that glycerin being able to penetrate so deep is GOOD. I'm not a doctor but when it comes to certain topics in dermatology I know more than her because I focused my research on that area because I struggle with issues in that specific area. I spent 20+ years of my life going to dermatologists for the same issues and they all said something else. If you haven't noticed every Doctor specializes in something (ideally). She is a dermatologist and there are many areas in dermatology that a dermatologist can specialize in. For instance, a cancer specialist which might have looked heavily into the research of sunscreens and might be able to give better advice than someone who deals with warts and skin rashes a lot. But that doesn't mean they know what they're talking about when it comes to, say, fungal acne or whatever. People like you get too carried away by titles. Think about all the anti climate change scientists. They're PhDs yet they claim climate change isn't real despite the scientific consensus saying otherwise. According to your logic they must be right by default because you know they are degree holders.

      @@chrisking6695 No you don't. You just think you do. She's not going to create a video for all types of skins though, because that would be a year. Glycerin works on most individuals, HA works in some not others. Assuming you know more than her is a fallacy.

    • @tessadunn8572
      @tessadunn8572 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      @@chrisking6695 HA appears hydrating but is actually dehydrating. it appears hydrating because of it plumping effects that draw moisture out of the dermis (thick deep layer) and into the epidermis (top layer). its a humectant. glycerin actually hydrates which is why it does so deeply into the skin. it's an emollient. most likely the reason you were so dehydrated after ditching HA is because you saw your skin in it's true form after the years of a high volume dehydrating ingredient, you're skin may be extremely dehydrated. also did you do a skin test before testing the new product? you must always do a patch test first to test for allergies. but i am surprised your only just finding out you have a glycerin allergy because it's in everything. did you see a doctor for an allergy test? it may of not been the glycerin

      in all that training at no point was she ever trained on over the counter products. her degree required her to understand prescription medication. there is technically no specific training for dermatology. any doctor has the right to call themselves a dermie. its kinda fupped up.

    The reason for Dr Shereene Idriss layering vaseline on the eye area is to protect them from getting in contact with the the retinoids/retinol etc that she's applying to her face as it can be very irritating for the eyes.

    That Vanicream cleanser is absolutely phenomenal and one of my favorites. Just because it has minimal ingredients and no actives or acids doesn't mean it's "okay" or bad in any way. That cleanser is a favorite among many derms and estheticians for how gentle it is and still foams. The cleansing step doesn't have to be extravagant or expensive or contain actives.

    • @Joanieloves
      @Joanieloves  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Stephen, I am defo going to give Vanicream cleanser a try. Have to tell you though that I have seen thousands of great results with clients using a cleanser with glycolic acid, lactic acid and salicylic. After one weeks' use their skin was smoother and more hydrated. I found this out many years ago and was told by an esthetician.....and didn't believe it until I tried it myself. So the truth is - one skin routine doesn't fit all. I am simply giving you the info I have accumulated after 35 years in the beauty industry. PS the cleanser I am talking about was cosmeceutical. I agree that for some people the cleansers don't have to be expensive or extravagant. Hope that goes somewhat to explain my thoughts.

You and I may have absolutely different skincare routines and we could have the same healthy skin, you know? so everyone that reviews give their honest feedback and opinion even other derms.

    This is an extremely patronising video towards a extremely highly educated dermatologist, which is a qualified doctor, and an not so educated esthetician!!
    A dermatologist is, therefore, qualified to diagnose and treat the skin. A dermatologist can also provide recommendations to another specialist based on your needs. Think of a dermatologist as a person more focused on the healthier side of your skin, not just the appearance. A dermatologist can treat issues like skin cancer. They can perform mole removals and cyst removals.
    Estheticians focus on the surface of your skin. There are some instances where estheticians work under the supervision of a dermatologist

      It really depends on how involved you are with your practice. Aesthetician study the science of skincare and do not just study the exterior. The main difference is that a dermatologist can prescribe medication and diagnose skin conditions. Aesthetician can recognize all the same things, but send you to a derm to give medication. Aesthetician aren't to be undermined.

  • @samantarizzi248

    I love Shereene because she's just simply not annoying and provides real knowledge and she obviously knows what she's talking about - she's a freaking dermatologist!! There is no need to even react to her videos tbh, because obviously she knows her stuff. What she said about makuep wipes... she is correct. She did say that you should NEVER use them, BUT if it somehow happens that you come home very drunk it's better to cleanse your face with those wipes than do nothing! She doesn't act childish, she's just my kind of person. :) All the others so called "specialists" online are very annoying to me, can't stand the majority of them. One of them is Cassandra Bankson, so annoying! I truly can't stand people like that, I'm sorry. And then they put on those ridiculous thumbnails to these reaction videos that just make them seem dumb and rude! Not a fan! Love Shereene though!

    • @Joanieloves
      @Joanieloves  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Samanta, I love Shereene too....just so you know. But have to tell you that I have treated quite a number of clients that have had really sensitive skin ....all from using face wipes. You are better with one of those face clothes/flannels that you use just with water and nothing else - that would be better than wipes. Trick is ...if you are going out to have a 'drink' or night out drinking....have face flannels ready in your bathroom to use 😊👌💞

    • @samantarizzi248
      @samantarizzi248 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Joanieloves Oh yes, I agree! I' not using wipes, my skin never tolerated wipes, but I've seen so many girlfriends not taking their makeup off after a night out or something, and in that moment I was always like "girl, you could AT LEAST wipe it off with makeup wipes" - like a last resort sort of thing, but they're not good for your skin, so you should never use them. I know, I know!! xD But my point is how can someone who is not a doctor judge someone who is - that is what's crazy to me when it comes to these reaction videos. I know you have the knowledge, and I know many people out there do, but is that knowledge REALLY comparable to dermatologist's knowledge? Depends on the dermatologist and on the aesthetician, I guess, but overall I trust doctors more, sorry! :) Love your channel though!! Keep spreading skin knowledge, girl! You rock :)

    I think Shereen (and other skin care TH-camrs) has a lot of college students who follow her (here in America we work our bums off at College/Uni until Friday Nights, study again Saturday for a few hours and then party again Saturday Night and start the cycle all over again on Sunday (during the day when we crawl out of bed). She may just have said what she said about the makeup wipes to try and get them to get at least some makeup off. It is popular amongst that age and then 30 onwards (when we think “what in the world is happening to my skin”)? I’m in the later aged group...but I definitely remember the “Uni” years and what college students are a like (and I teach High School-they aren’t Dray paying attention if it “looks bad under their makeup” and also because they are broke-depending). I wish I had known what I knew now and I’m so glad the information is out there! Especially about sunblock!

But you know....this is down to the cosmetic companies and they know that face wipes will sell as they are a 'lazy way' to take make up off. Problem is they just don't 😉. But you are defo right and life at uni is all about the parties 😄❤️

      @@Joanieloves I never like their scent or feel! Hey left a weird and sticky texture! I had one or two packs only! I have the bamboo wipes for the oil I use with my first cleanse snd glycolic toner twice a week. I do my routine, except for retinol, and an extra layer of moisturizer as soon as the sun goes done at the latest! I like to get the make up off my face ASAP! I’ve even been known to do the double cleanse as soon as I get home then reapply a bit of moisturizer and sunscreen (dry skin) and then just wash it again (or even a double cleanse again) and do my full routine just before bed. I don’t want makeup on my face longer that I feel it needs to be! The more I take care of my face, the less makeup I need. AHAs and Adapalene on alternate days-along with double cleansing and good moisturizing with peptides like HA have helped so much. (And of course sunblock!) They have all helped me not have to wear so much makeup so often! Usually it’s just BB cream, cover up, mascara and a bit of blush and lip stick! Takes 10 minutes tops. An extra ten minutes of sleep and better skin is definitely very worth it! I the online skin care community there is a myth going around saying drinking water doesn’t help the skin...I beg to disagree with that opinion! It absolutely makes a huge difference with my skin-EVEN when I don’t eat right! Which is...well, not just occasionally during quarantine! (Many Americans still do quarantine...and I’m one of them)! Thanks again for your channel! Sorry for any typos. I have a million things going on around me at the moment.

      @@Joanieloves also, about Uni or “College”...you do learn a lot about classes...but so much more about life and people (esp. if you live in a dorm and have to learn to get along with a roommate). That’s the point in many many ways. Otherwise you could live at gone and take online classes (which I hear is horribly boring). By “it” I wasn’t much referring to skin care wipes, I meant skin care videos, culture, and having a regime, etc. That has happened in the last year (something good coming out of Covid-I got my 2nd Vaccine Saturday and I’m feeling better. So glad to have gotten so we can all start getting on with “life”). I wonder if she may have been trying to beg them to just wash their faces when they ARE tipsy (especially eyes so they don’t wake up irritated and swollen. (That was the worst the one time I let it happen)! My college aged cousin (who was more raised more as a niece or even much younger sister) never ever more than one pack them because of her concern for the environment. I was proud of her.

    Alcohol isn't as bad as an ingredient because it helps with product penetration. As long as its formulated well its completely safe and often times beneficial ofcourse pure astringents are a big no no and yes not everyone will be able to tolerate products with substantial alcohol. In the past companies were garbage at using alcohol in their formulation and many if them still do but thankfully there's been some advancements.

      Hey Heymoon .....nice to meet you. My grandparents were from Northern Ireland 😊. Not sure on the advice you need to dilute Glycolic/Lactic Acid and Retinol with ......Do you mean that you use a product with glycolic and lactic acid and another with retinol???? Think of moisturiser as being a buffer and if you apply retinol -let it absorb - then moisturiser on top - that will buffer and somewhat dilute the retinol. Is that what you mean? 🤓💕

    Loved how Joanie kept mentioning cruelty-free as well as alcohol-free and commenting on sensitive skin. Those are all very important to me. After being in the beauty industry prior, I am huge on using as ‘few’ products as possible. Our skin doesn’t need a lot. Watching the dermatologist put on serum after serum exhausted me.

    Joanie, can you recommend a good cruelty-free line of products? THANK YOU for mentioning not spraying perfume in certain places. I NEVER spray it on my neck or chest, as it contains alcohol and alcohol is very drying to the skin. I use essential oil or perfume in a roller bottle (purse size), and put a wee amount on the insides of my wrists AFTER applying unscented moisturizer. The skin under our eyes is 7x as thin as the rest of our skin…NO RUBBING! Also, I’ve never worn false eyelashes and I’m blessed with thick, long lashes. Whilst removing mascara and eye makeup…NO RUBBING! You’ll pull on your skin and you’ll pull out your eyelashes. Even after washing my face, I pat it dry with baby bamboo washcloths. Sometimes I don’t dry my face at all; as I apply moisturizer and water helps lock in that moisture. Another thing: I live in Florida and haven’t had any sun exposure since the age of 17. I also dislike being hot. I do take daily Vitamin D, as we need it for strong bones and teeth. Also, as women were prone to Osteoporosis. If I must go out in the terrible Florida sun, I wear a baby sunscreen with an SPF of 85. I’ve been blessed with a great jawline, super thick hair on my head and eyebrows, but I can’t grow body hair? That’s fine, as I’ve never shaved in my life. It must be genetic, as my mum is the same. We save a lot of money on razors! 🤪 At 59 I have porcelain skin, and I’ve never, ever had my face or body touched. I go without makeup often, and I haven’t a spot or wrinkle on my entire face. I drink a lot of water, I’m an athlete, and I get adequate sleep. When I go somewhere with my youngest son who’s 34, people think he’s my husband! I’ve still never coloured my black hair in my life, and I’ve never blown it dry, used a curling iron or even hairspray. My hair takes 2-3 days to air dry. I’m also a vegan and only eat organic, non GMO foods. My husband is an M.D., but he’s a trauma surgeon, not a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. We live in Florida, and we just bought a second home on Holland Park, London in the UK. I prefer the weather in the UK. Great channel, Joanie! ❤️

    She is putting Vaseline to protect the eye area, as you know the skin around the eyes is more sensitive for a retinol. I heard this from many dermatologist. 🤷‍♀️

    • @Joanieloves
      @Joanieloves  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Citlalli, Yes, I understand the thought process of putting something on to protect the eyes.....when doing eyelash tints all beauty aestheticians are taught to apply vaseline on the eye lids and under the eyes to prevent tint from going into the skin and discolouring it. Problem for me is that vaseline is an occlusive product....meaning it prevents any penetration of any skincare if you apply the vaseline first. To buffer any retinol products on the face and eye area - it's good to apply moisturiser before (if you have very sensitive skin) or on top of the retinol - that will act like a buffer. Hope this makes sense 😊❤️ PS. a huge thanks for subscribing 🙏🤗

    Thanks Joanie, for taking the time and trouble to take on the hallowed DR. As a fellow Dr (of Middle Eastern ethnicity), but first gen, and from a working poor family, let me tell you, I'm blown away by your knowledge and sincerity...you're absolutely right in offering us this video as a much needed counterpart to the original. If we didn't have experienced people challenging received wisdom, there'd only be authoritarianism (and plenty of less privileged individuals feeling invisible). Shereen is a savvy communicator, and I'm sure she's good at what she does (and - as I know too, she's got the long years of book knowledge and toil to back up her claims) ... the problem is she's also an influencer, and she's also got personal and financial motivations at stake. Her YT videos should not be held as gospel truth, if anything, there are people (dermatologists who aren't on TH-cam; expert aestheticians such as yourself) who absolutely could and should take on these high profile TH-cam "Drs". All academic knowledge is useless if it doesn't adequately serve the widest group of people. I know a few people with Dr titles who aren't at all the most ethical or the most brilliant brains, getting a PhD or M.D. is equally a matter of having the right opportunities placed in front of you! That being said, you're not really attacking Shereen at all, nor questioning her talent or training...you're being extremely warm and open minded, but you're also showing your own deep love of and knowledge of the subject, which is steeped in decades of real word experience. Keep going, and keep catering to all of us women out there, who can't afford Shereen's routine, but who do value our local aestheticians. Love from Ireland! ❤️ Kay x

    Hi Joanie, thank you for your vid. Please may I ask for your advice? I am 35 and have pale skin with the odd freckle. I wear factor 50 all year around. I'd like the freckles to disappear! I have one larger freckle/sunspot that has appeared lately near my eye and I hate it. A 25% TCA peel didn't remove it. Can you recommend a treatment/cream for it please? Thank you xx

    • @Joanieloves
      @Joanieloves  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lou, wearing factor 50 should keep the freckles at bay but if you have one appeared lately near your eye - this tells me that you have to ensure that you apply your sunscreen all over and especially under the eyes and on the nose. I personally have had basal cell carcinoma (a form of skin cancer) removed under my eye - so I am talking from experience here. This area is very prone to sun damage - more than ppl realise. Surprised the 25% TCA didn't help. What I would suggest is serums that contain Vitamin C and Tranexamic Acid and look at The Inkey List for an inexpensive range. Pigmentation can take ages to disappear as the skin cell turnover has slowed down to a around 6-8 weeks at your age. So give products truly a few months use to have an effect. I also would have a look at eye creams that you can use in the evening that contain Retinol. Good Luck and let me know how you get on. 🤗❤️

    Cleansers with active ingredients are only useful if you leave them on long enough for the active ingredient to work. Most people apply then rinse fairly quickly, so why waste money on these generally more expensive cleansers when you just wash it straight off again. Obviously everyone's skin is different, common problems aside, and you do what works works for you. Personally I save the active ingredients for the products that stay on my skin so i get the most benefit (and 'bang for my buck', so to speak).

    • @Joanieloves
      @Joanieloves  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Sarah, I hear what you are saying....for sure ....and I get it. Here is another viewpoint...There are a few good cleansers that contain glycolic acid, lactic acid and salicylic acid which are amazing to smooth out the skin's surface, shed dead skin cells, unblock the pores and then for some ppl using a vitamin C serum, moisturiser, spf would be a great routine. Rather than applying a few different serums to do the same job. I think that we should take time (even when cleansing) with all the steps in our routine and try and make them simple and easy. Thank you! 😊

    I just discovered your channel! I love you and your personality❤️ you are just the sweetest. I use oil based cleansers for my first cleanse and still have to rub my eyes like crazy to get mascara off. Any tips for removing mascara with a balm or oil cleanser?

    • @Joanieloves
      @Joanieloves  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Regan, thanks so much for your lovely, 😊 kind comments. I think oil based cleansers are fine for the face but personally I don't like them for the eyes cause we all have little demodex mites living in our hair follicles (eyelashes) and you have to ensure that you get all your mascara off so we don't get any irritation with these guys. So get yourself a separate eye make up remover in liquid form and look for ones that contain chamomile or soothing ingredients like that. Oil can be irritating to the eyes. Now if you want to persevere with the oil cleanser for eye area....soak a cotton pad with the cleanser and hold over the eye area, press a little firmly, and hold it for 30 secs ....then take it off. Giving the oil time to dissolve the eye make up is the secret here. Check out my video about how I take make up off for tips. 💕

    Hi do you have any advice and recommendations for sensitive rosacea skin which is really dry but gets really oily throughout the day and overnight by the morning ? Xx

    • @Joanieloves
      @Joanieloves  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Emma, 1. you need to keep heat away from your skin eg. hot food, hot drinks, hairdryer as rosacea is all to do with the circulation. It's heat that is causing more oil to be put out onto the skin's surface. 2. Now is the time to quit smoking (if you do) as this affects circulation 3. Light pressure when applying creams and cleansing 4. Use a milky cleanser with aha's which will slough off dead skin cells but hydrate at same time e.g. glycolic acid, lactic acid. 5. Use a hydrating serum with Niacinamide which repairs and calms skin down 6. Use a moisturiser with glycerin, hyaluronic acid but not one that doesn't absorb - so be careful of one's that lie on surface as they will be too occlusive. 7. you must wear a sunscreen with zinc oxide to protect from the environment and finally watch my video th-cam.com/video/QaxXAEDfUfE/w-d-xo.html Good Luck! 😉

Only thing to do tho' is only use a little - sometimes too much product under eye area can lead to more irritation. Don't really know what strength tbh....but always err on the cautious side by trying any new product on the neck of inside of crook of elbow if you are wary of it. No point in taking chances. Hydroxyethylpiperazine ethane sulfonic acid I think is probably been put into this formulation to ph balance and buffer it - but if I were you - I would look for another formulation. I know that some skincare ingredients won't penetrate the skin to cause allergies - but I always steer on the 'better be safe than sorry' road. Hope this makes sense. ❤️
