I'm a grad student living alone and I love my bread machine. 1) I bring baked goods to friend gatherings, and everyone loves it so much. 2) I bake a loaf on Sunday, eat some, and freeze 2/3 of it, to have bread for sandwiches during the week without it getting hard. 3) you can add things you love to your bread to make delicious loaves that would be expensive in other places- my fave is cranberry walnut whole wheat bread. 4) it makes my apartment smell amazinggggg

I had this EXACT bread maker. I bought it at an Army Post Exchange in near Colón Panamá in 1992. I lived in the Army barracks and "cooking" was not allowed. We could use a microwave or anything without an exposed heating element. This machine technically didn't violate the rules and I absolutely LOVED torturing my neighbors with the smell of freshly baking bread. The machine was actually quite expensive, so buying a working unit for just over $10 is a great find! I lugged this hulking machine around for a while, but then when I got out of the military and had an actual kitchen, it was no longer necessary. I learned to make bread the old fashioned way. I donated my machine to a thrift store (in Monterey), and it absolutely still worked. I wonder if it's the same one!

I think a lot of times people can move out of state which can be very costly so just liquidate or donate most of their stuff....get them as gifts...are impulse buyers, and/or just buy things and rarely use them or think they’re gonna use it a lot and never do (that’s why you often find things like slow cookers, bread makers, and other unnecessary small appliances)...so then just donate it to a thrift shop. That’s why when I need or wanna try a new appliance I almost never bother with buying it in store....(unless it’s something I can’t live without/ need fast or find on a good clearance or sale) for example I’d like an instant pot....but just a matter of time before I snag an instant pot at a yard sale or thrift shop for like 5-10$ lol....so why spend 5-20x more for it new?? I have a high end shark vacuum and an identical backup for it that I purchased one for 10$ and one for 3$ both at garage sales and both in perfect working condition. They retail for about 200$ each. The 3$ one the woman who sold it to me genuinely thought something was wrong with it and told me as much (but I figured for 3$, it was worth keeping around for parts for my other one, if needed) ....but upon taking it home and inspecting it closer, it became clear that she just let so much of her long hair ball up and it just blocked the pipe going into the canister.....(like if you have super long hair and shed a lot, no duh you’re gonna have to put a little more effort into maintaining your vacuum)...it works flawlessly after removing the blockage.
The types of yard sales you should never miss out on though are church sales, storage facility sales, and sales in housing community clubhouses. When the item doesn’t belong to the person making the prices, especially when the money isn’t going into *their* pockets, it’s the best situation because they’re more apt to just get rid of it, have less of an incentive to price higher, and often don’t know how much the item is worth or what it was originally purchased for, so are liable to price some items for dirt cheap. Cannot tell you how many expensive items I’ve found super cheap like this.

Honestly, this brings back so many wonderful memories! I loved making bread! I had a friend who was a Realtor. She would take her bread machine with her when she had an Open House at a house she was showing. She'd make garlic bread or cinnamon raisin bread. The house would smell heavenly by the time people turned up to see the house. She swore that the bread sold the house!

It has brought so many fond memories with it. I hadn't used it in quite a while so after watching this video, I went and got it off my appliance shelf in the garage and baked a loaf of bread. I looooooooooooooooove my "vintage" (circa 1995) bread machine! Admittedly it's not an zojirushi, but I found the most awesome aspect of it is using the dough setting: toss in all the ingredients and then you can pull out the finished dough and then you can turn it into doughnuts, braided challah, proper "bread shaped" bread (as opposed to the common bread machine brick), homemade soft pretzels, cinnamon buns, etc etc etc. Seriously, the options are endless once you've learned the machine's individual quirks! :D

I have a Zoe (as we affectionately call it), too! Love it. I used to work for a health food store that sold wheat berries and other things. Their whole mission was to teach people how to grind their own flour to make all their own baked goods. The health benefits are RIDICULOUS. Even my gluten sensitive hubby can eat stuff I make with the freshly ground wheat. The Zoe is the only bread maker on the market that is tough enough to handle the fresh ground flour. 😉
Edit: my husband isn't a celiac, so he can have gluten, it just makes him feel crappy (pun intended).

Bread makers are a great thing... I used one my family has had for ages to make some buttermilk bread after I made some home-made butter. Also, wrapping the bread after doesn't effect the crust much if you let it cool first, which I highly recommend. It always heats really well later too, becoming warm and chewy again. That said... whenever we make a loaf in our bread machine it vanishes within a day.

I love my breadmaker but here are my gripes about breadmakers. The odd loaf size and shape. Make them so they can make normal size and shape loafs already. The hole in the bottom makes it hard to get a loaf out sometimes and leaves a hole in the loaf. There is a breadmaker out now that has a paddle that folds down so this isnt an issue but they all need to do this. My last gripe is there should be a compartment that has the yeast in the top of it and the water below and when the water reaches the right temperature the yeast should drop in. Yeast activates best if added to warm water rather then just thrown in the bread maker. Our bread is only costing us 40 cents for a 2lb loaf.

I truly admire your thin-slicing technique (dreaming of toast.) I already have an old bread maker that I have not used in years. I’m pulling that thing out of storage!

My Mom came with me to the military BX and she bought each of her three kids this exact model for Christmas in about 1995. Brings back wonderful memories (of my Mom AND the bread machine!) :)

I have the same old breadmaker. Love it. I do watch as it mixes at first and sometimes have to add a bit more liquid just to see that the dough looks moist and soft. Also love my Zojirushie rice maker.
