    I love how you make these extensive videos on obscure recipes, highlighting aspects of food culture which are usually ignored by foodies. And you never come at it from an angle of prejudice, you're so open to being pleasantly surprised and acknowledge that many of our food likes/dislikes are cultural. You also really take the time to describe the specific tastes/textures.
    I think your channel is valuable beyond this platform for this precise reason, something worth archiving for future generations. There's so many recipes in our history that have been overlooked and even lost, because people didn't think they were worth much. But even the smallest and most humble meal means something to someone, and your channel brings homage to that.
    I love your vision so much, Emmy 😄 Thank you for years of marvellous food adventures.
    PS: To all my fellow food adventurers: next time you're eating a just-ripe banana, have it with sriracha. It is so good, I swear 🙈

    You should make an Appalachian Apple Stack cake for your Hard Times series! They used to have everyone invited to a wedding bring a layer which was then assembled at the wedding as the cake.

      I'm from the Appalachian mountains and I wonder if that's what my great grandparents done for my grandmother's birthday several years. Basically a thin crepe like pancake with a little spice and sugar would be smeared with a little homemade apple butter and stacked up. They done this when they couldn't afford a cake.

    I have eaten a lot of what you call Grandma's toast (토스토, or simply, toast). I ate it in Korea and different vendors have their own way of preparing it. My favourite toast seller was across the street from Yonsei University. He had his stall there every morning and the toast he prepared was substantial. In addition to the cabbage omelette and ketchup, it also had cheese slices and crab sticks and sweet chili sauce. It was a lovely thing to eat before going to Korean language class. He also gave you a bottle of Yakult to drink with it. The only thing I have to say is that while toast tastes sweet I have never had one with such a layer of sugar.

    My grandma, who we call Nana, used to make us peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches. Which i didn't know wasn't like a normal sandwich until much later. Funny story, one time my friend and were hanging out and met up with some friends. We all walked to the grocery store because one of them had to get some groceries. He came out with a loaf of bread, lettuce and peanut butter. So I asked him "oh, are you going to make peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches?" And he says "ummm...no, but you can make one." And i proceeded to make one on the hood of someone's car while they all kinda laughed and smiled. And that's how I learned that peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches aren't a normal thing that everyone makes. Ya, cool story, i know...;)

    • @th0ngrl
      @th0ngrl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mountain Girl it would depend on what you don’t like about ketchup! If you want to try it out I would make a smaller version of it first and toss it together to see if you like the flavors together. Just like people see colors differently, people taste food differently.
      Without ketchup this recipe is REALLY sweet and heavy/oily from the sugar, buttered white bread, and egg. The ketchup is the only acidic flavor to cut through the other ingredients, so if you take it out you would want to replace it with something else. A little A1 sauce might work or real tomato slices. Some people put pickles too!

      I make a stir fry cabbage exactly like that on the griddle or wok using either olive oil or butter. Salt, pepper, garlic-- sooooper yummy!
      If you add handfuls of cabbage in at different times, you'll get beautiful fried crispy brown bits, some softer hashbrown-like pieces, and then some fresher crunchies. I've also added fresh herbs. Friends have compared my cabbage fry to breakfast home fries. If you don't like cabbage yet, you will!

    As a Seoulite, may I point out that using Heinz ketchup means you're going way upscale. Also, there are many varieties of this, including cheese or other items. Personally, I always tell them to not add sugar. Also, your mixture is a little thicker than most (that's an observation, not a complaint) Best wishes.

Sure, we know that it’s trash but it’s tasty. And often it’s these kinds of ingredients that make the dish a success. You said yourself the white bread and the ketchup really make the dish! Its great that there is a good reviewer that can give such honest and joy filled reviews of humbler food.

We didn't add salt or pepper and we were wary about the amount of sugar so we used it sparingly, but next time we will go 2 spoonfuls all the way! Thanks Emmy, you're awesome. • @jbeargrr
      @jbeargrr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I can't add sugar or eat white bread, as I'm diabetic, but I could make it with my home-made lower carb bread, no-added sugar ketchup, and sprinkle a little allulose or erythritol on it. Those are both natural sweeteners, despite the scary sounding names. They both taste like real sugar, only slightly less sweet. No nasty aftertaste.
      Making your own, you can do whatever alterations you want. I just like the idea of that mostly veg omelet in a sandwich. Cabbage is so good for you, like any cruciferous veg. Bet it would rock with shredded Brussels sprouts.

    I just had one of these yesterday. I love em. I always get the veggie for 1,800 won. With ham, it's 2,300 won. Ham and cheese is 2,500 won. I only wish she used real butter and not margarine. The lady that makes mine uses a sugar shaker and probably doesn't even amount to a whole teaspoon. If you eat it at the stall, she'll cut it in half for you. Not corner to corner, so it's nice and rectangular. Then she'll put it in a little 3x5 ish cardstock paper to hold the sandwich while the other half remains on the grill so it stays warm until you're ready to eat it, which is nice for cold winter days.

    Korean street toast is one of my favorite breakfasts. I make mine from a Korean TH-cam video. There are a few small differences. The recipe I use adds a slice of ham and a slice of cheese. Not so much sugar, less ketchup and a bit of mayo. I HAD to try it. I thought that something that looked that strange had to taste good and I was right!
