Emmy you should try making the 2000 year old Pompeii Honey Cake! There are recipes online for it. Most of them call for baking powder but since 2000 years ago Baking powder didn't exist yet, people believe they used yeast. A TH-camr tried this and it came out great. It would be awesome to see you try it too!

You're such a wholesome person! You haven't let TH-cam change you, you've always used it as a creative and educational outlet rather than a source of income (though I'm sure it is). There's something so wholesome about your little family out in Rhode Island with your chickens and bees, still taking out books from the library, most of your kitchen things are from the thrift store, and to you its second nature. I find some youtubers are this way but they almost boast about it and you're so matter of fact because it's just your life and your sharing it! Thank you for that Emmy.
A little trivia; orchids actually are named for the Orchis family, which is characterized by the pairs of roots. In Greek, orchis translates to testicles. *edit: because of course my best comment on this site is about testicles 🙄

You have inspired me to keep looking and spend the extra money to make this. Ty for your wonderful energy and thoughtful and educating videos! I am going to make this. You are awesome.
I just broke out my ice cream maker for the summer. I make the best homemade ice cream with raw milk, raw cream farm fresh eggs, sugar and vanilla bean. It's to die for. I also make peach with vine ripe peaches among all kinds of other fun flavors. You just can't beat homemade ice cream with raw milk and cream fresh from the farm.
LOL, generally speaking I am not a huge cleaning fan, BUT. taking an item that's filthy, and cleaning it obsessively until it's perfect is incredibly gratifying, and soothing. Cleaning stuff that's only a little dirty, is only a chore, restoring something that's unrecognizably dirty to it's previous lustre is really fun :)
This made me feel nostalgic when she started describing the types of ice cream makers of yore. I loved making homemade bananna ice cream with my Dad when I was younger. I thought it was magical packing the ice around the tub, sprinkling the rock salt crystals on top, then cranking until my arm ached. Which was worth every second when I got to taste the result of my labor. Wheny children were toddlers my father passed the tradition on buying them an ice cream maker and showing them what they could create as well. Granted he bought the more modern version that spun with an electric motor. However the rock salt, tub, and ice remained the same. They made so many wonder filled memories with their Papa creating some crazy flavors. 🍨🍦Sorry if I overly waxed poetic. We lost my Father in 2014. So when something triggers an old happy memory. I really appreciate it.
We have this ice cream in Turkey too but it is called "Maraş(Marash) ice cream". Maraş or Kahramanmaraş is a city in Turkey and where my mother is from. The orchid that people use to make salep is growing in that area and my granddad used to collect the roots and sold them to local ice cream makers. It's strechy, hard to melt and made out of goat milk here. Smells amazing and tastes amazing. Store bought ones are suck but local ice cream is delicious. Mastic is used in milk desserts in Turkey like tavukgöğsü (chickenbreast, yes it contains real chicken), kazandibi(pot bottom), muhallebi (pudding (?))etc. And it is called "damla sakızı" (drop gum). When we were little we used to chew it like regular gum! It's smell reminds me of my childhood. It is interesting though the fact it is called "booza" because we have a drink made out of fermented buckwheat called "boza" that is served with cinnamon.
Omg Emmy. BLESS YOU FOR THIS. I've had that very salep in my Amazon wishlist for a while but I was intimidated by the recipes for booza in my Middle Eastern cookbooks. Seeing you do this with an ice cream maker, and not even a super expensive one, is incredibly encouraging, and the reason I am so very excited about this recipe is because I am allergic to cow dairy and I can't have cream, and this is the first ice cream recipe with a good texture that I've EVER seen made with just milk!!! So now I can use goat's milk and know it will still turn out lush. I am SO STOKED.
Oh, my goodness! I have had an ice cream maker, AND one of those plastic bench scrapers for like a thousand years, and I have NEVER thought to use the scraper this way! Game changer!!! Thank you!
This looks yummy 😋 i love how you go so in depth with your descriptions and the whole process! I feel like i know what every ingredient would taste like 😊🥰
Emmy you lucked out! I bought a similar machine and the first time I used it I did like you did and poured ingredients in before turning it on. The ice cream was freezing to the sides before I could get the paddle in an I was unable to scrape it off enough to get it in. I guess it's a tight fitting paddle. Had to let it thaw in fridge. Pour ingredients out. Clean and refreeze tub and start again. Now I always remember to turn it on first and pour ingredients through the lid. You did an awesome job! Sounds like a fun treat.
Thank you for this particular video Emmy ! I recently visited a new ice cream shop and got really nervous after consuming a scoop of stretchy birthday cake ice cream! It was delightful with homemade cake chunks but I still said a few prayers throughout the night!!
You can use the leftover Salep powder to make a warm custard-like sweet beverage we enjoy in colder months! It's just called "sahlab" or salep, usually made with cinnamon and vanilla added too :)
Persian here, to get the long strands you need to work it by hand with a paddle prior to serving. You can find videos of this being done here on TH-cam.
You might want to make sure the sahlab you got was the orchid kind. Most "sahlab" you buy is more of a starch mix since the orchids are endangered and its very difficult/expensive to get authentic sahlab.
@@emmymade Anything labeled "sahlab" in the US is not the real orchis flour but corn starch. The best way to get the real orchis flour is on Etsy, direct from Greece or Turkey. Sahlab is also used to make pudding and a warm milk drink in the winter all across the Middle-East. In Egypt, they flavor it with coconut. Elsewhere, you'll just see walnuts, pistachios, cinnamon, rose water, dried fruit, and orange blossom water. Very easy to make.
My boyfriend's brother in law has one of those crank ice cream makers and when we went up to montana to visit, all my boyfriend's younger brothers and sisters (huge family) took turns to churn and crank. FANTASTIC way to keep a group of kids busy and everyone gets a treat too
Fox testicles?!! 😮 Once again, you have made me long to try something that I don't know how to get. On the other hand, thanks to you, I have tried Tim Tams, jackfruit, mochi, sapote (the orange kind), and mangosteen. Thanks for giving me good ideas. 😄
Molly Vandever are tim rams not the best thing ever??! I got addicted living in Australia. If u bite off opposite corners u can suck up coffee or milk and it’s a ‘Tim tam straw’💗 Once u master that, u move onto their hamburger with egg and beets(actually really good surprisingly). 😂
@@deniseherud I do love Tim Tams and I have done the Tim Tam slam (straw). But I discovered that I prefer my cookies crispy. They get soggy too quickly when you suck your tea through them--still delicious, though. 😁
I'm glad you're comfortable using second hand use items... My parents were NEVER supportive of us using second hand used items because they're are paranoid about sanitation/cleanliness of the products being used by unknown people...
Fun Fact: So called "witches ingredients" were just normal plants, that were given code names or had colloquial names. 'Fox Testicles' is a perfect example. Lots of old medicine women were very protective of their secret recipes and formulas for medicines and such, and would use those code names so people couldn't steal their recipes. If everyone knew how to cure foot fungus or whatever, they wouldn't pay them for it! So the classic 'Eye of Newt', 'Cows foot', 'lizard tail'... etc. Were just normal plants and ingredients! Pretty cool.
Emmy years ago my best friend received a ice cream maker like yours for a wedding gift. He and wife wanted to use it for their wedding gift opening party. Again like yours it said to freeze it over night. They were disappointed when they read the instructions. I said no worries and went picked some dry ice. We pack the container for 20mins and used it. It worked! The container was so cold it produced a hard creamy ice cream.
The way you describe scents/smells is beyond me! I really admire the fact that you can describe what something smells like just right enough for us to imagine it. Thank you, your vids are amazing!! 💙 You should see me tho: “uh it smells like you know that thing, uh oh god never mind 😅”
Every time i see a Notification that Emmy posts a video...I am here, on point. You always teach me something, and this time was a big WOW....Keep on doing, woman...you are a treasure!
Your comment about the milk tasting creamy and rich reminded me of Fleur de lait or Fiori de latte It a style of gelato that calls for the same base ingredients milk, sugar, cornstarch ...some add cream and honey too. It is a wonderfuly simple but delicious ice cream. It’s not stretchy like your bozzo (super fascinating btw) but I think you’d enjoy the recipe and it’s history. Thank you for always indulging our curiosities. LOVE you and your channel.
This reminds me of the memory of my grandmother’s ice cream which existed in her freezer for far too long...yet she took it out and lovingly offered it to me every single time I visited her 💕

Sitting here in the depths of winter, watching this and wanting to try it!
Love that you’re so genuine and we all love a thrifting queen! ❤️
15:30 😎✌ Emmy sounds like a professor giving a lecture, on ice cream. Bravo.
You make this old grumpy dude smile every time I watch your vids.😁
We drank a salep drink in Instanbul. It was wonderful, like drinking a custard. I'll have to try this recipe!
Emmy, I love your enthusiasm for life!! It makes your videos a delight to watch regardless of the content.
'...quality of the motor...' I have an old cuisinart food processor. They definitely don't skimp on motors. It's HEAVY!
Emmy is the mom of TH-cam ❤
YESS! A fellow NPR nerd! Love that you got this from Science Friday!
I love the Ira Glass and Ira Flato have a fight over "who is the real Ira"
@@anneliesehanson5256 personally I'm #TeamIraGlass
Thank you for this particular video Emmy ! I recently visited a new ice cream shop and got really nervous after consuming a scoop of stretchy birthday cake ice cream! It was delightful with homemade cake chunks but I still said a few prayers throughout the night!!
You can use the leftover Salep powder to make a warm custard-like sweet beverage we enjoy in colder months! It's just called "sahlab" or salep, usually made with cinnamon and vanilla added too :)
Emmy is so sweet and has a gorgeous heart 🥹❤️
12:00
The look of maniacal glee on Emmy's face as she pounds the helpless ice cream to submission...
❤ A woman after my own heart.
Persian here, to get the long strands you need to work it by hand with a paddle prior to serving. You can find videos of this being done here on TH-cam.
I wish I had your patience when it comes to cooking and trying new things!!!!
The way she describes things is just so incredible! So much detail!
You might want to make sure the sahlab you got was the orchid kind. Most "sahlab" you buy is more of a starch mix since the orchids are endangered and its very difficult/expensive to get authentic sahlab.
Thanks for the tip!
I love watching your videos with my kiddos. We all learn so much just from watching you. Thank you so much for sharing the Science Knowledge!
You can tell how excited Emmy was cuz she just rushed through “eat the ducky moss” so she could taste the ice cream already!
Oh Emmy i have been binging so many of your videos lately and i just can't get enough! I love you to bits for all the hours you have entertained me
Fox testicles!!?😯 surprised this didn’t catch on during the slime phase.... ice cream slime
I lost that EXACT ice cream maker in my first divorce. Time to go thrifting for another one 😂😘
What kind of barbarian would take the ice cream maker in a divorce settlement. Heathen!!!
Linda B ...still worth it 😂🤣
Of all the things to demand in a divorce... "I want the ice cream maker!!"
I hope you got the fondue set.
Ice cream machine: $50.
Freedom: priceless. 😂😂😂
Emmy is such a dependable source of process and information videos for uncommon creations!
This is so weird!!! My coworker was just asking me how to say ice cream in Arabic. BOOZA!!!
Fate!
That was Emmy in disguise
Yay Emmy video! Just in time, I was having a bad day. Your videos always cheer me up! ❤️ Much love from here in Canada!
Very cool! Thanks for sharing
That ice cream machine really gets the job done fast!
So happy you tried this! I’ve wanted to now for a while. Now I’m going to try making it myself!
The way you describe scents/smells is beyond me! I really admire the fact that you can describe what something smells like just right enough for us to imagine it. Thank you, your vids are amazing!! 💙 You should see me tho: “uh it smells like you know that thing, uh oh god never mind 😅”
I loved the little vlog clip insert!!!!! Would definitely watch if you made vlogs
She does!
I am completely mesmerized while watching Emmy eat weird stuff and plays with her food again...and now I want a bowl of ice cream 🍨 🍦😋Dang it Emmy!
"Fox Testicles?!!" Love you Emmy ☆ thanks for making awsome videos!
Every time i see a Notification that Emmy posts a video...I am here, on point. You always teach me something, and this time was a big WOW....Keep on doing, woman...you are a treasure!
Why buy one ice cream from the store, when you can own an ice cream machine for the simple price of *6.60!!!*
AND you know what's in your ice cream (and it's not pre-licked)
@@BliffleSplick pre-licked??? What do you mean by that?
@@Tangtangtangeunha Jfc nooooooo. Why did I just look that up... Ergh.... People are disgusting
She bought the exact same model of ice cream maker as the one my family has!
This reminds me of the memory of my grandmother’s ice cream which existed in her freezer for far too long...yet she took it out and lovingly offered it to me every single time I visited her 💕
Gotta love grandmas. 💕
I practically bathed in calamine lotion as a child, so l understand what you mean. I adore homemade ice cream. 👍
I thought I was the only one who looked like a little splotchy pink piglet growing up. 😫
No, I'm afraid you weren't. Lol
Same... I’m a 90s baby and had the chicken pox pretty bad 😫😅
I always love your videos. You're so pleasant to watch lol. Super adorable and your voice is relaxing lol. It's a bonus that I enjoy playing with new foods so the content is spot on!
Wow, $6 dollar for the machine? What a good deal! /o/\o\
Genuinely confused how this has 300 dislikes??? What is there to dislike about this. Emmy your energy has gotten me through my very worst days! I wish we could hangout and cook together and I could help you make your videos! You seem like such a fun & healthy friend to have ❤️❤️
I wonder if you could use konjac derived glucomannan, since the orchids are in danger of extinction, at least locally if not as species....
I'm surprised to hear of a plant going extinct!
Can't you just break off a bit of the root to spread out a plant? I don't know how botany works, so just a thought
I was thinking konjac too. Sometimes konjac powder smells a bit nasty. Used heavily in Japan, presumably the plants are cultivated heavily too.
Iirc guar gum is the substitute slot of people use.
@@FFKING1140 No, you clearly don't.
I've been looking for this recipe EVERYWHERE. We eat this in iran with saffron, rosewater and pistachio and I've missed it since I left home.
I actually just found this exact model at my local thrift store for $4! You can guess how quickly I picked it up!
edit: omg it's not the camera that has changed but maybe your counter table? and omg orange looks so good on you. and oh your hairstyles are different in such a good way.
Okay one minute into the video and I just have to say THE NEW CAM IS AMAAAZING. The distance between you and the camera is just PERFECT and comfortable for the eyes.
I'm Syrian and Booza is a very sacred thing in Syria, so I'm so glad you're doing this and I'm more glad you've mentioned lots of facts.
Your content + research abilities are highly appreciated, Emmy. 💙
OMG YES I HAD COMMENTED THIS ON YOUR PAGE WEEKS AGO
