Even though it is a legal/binding judgment I think a lot of people don't see it as real court and they just see it as TV so they don't take it seriously. Especially when you as a defendant know that the show is going to pay whatever you owe to the plaintiff and you're gonna get money on top of that just for appearing.

These home renovation/construction cases are near and dear to me because having a home, apartment or dwelling that you own to have work done can be a tricky process and situation. One has to really do their due diligence to make sure you find the right people or it can be a disastrous situation not to mention expensive as well to fix the problem.
A good thing to me is that the judge specializes in home renovations. Her family is construction workers, her father, and other family members, so she grew up knowing the ends and out, and that would entitle hard to be certified in that area. Her judgment was right on to me a specially when she used what the paid lawyer had scrutinized as far as out of pocket money and what was doing it was all fair. The problem is as the lady was "left holding the bag." He might not have bailed had she not given all that money upfront. You have to string them along because they're going to line you ahead.
Wonder if he had a license , cause it's strange when she stated that when the plantiff said she would call the police,. He got all upset and refused to come back to finish. Very odd.

She will realize that after hiring other contractors, and see how they work, then she will really regret losing the defendant. For most contractors, once you pay them, the money is gone. Even if you go to court and get a judgement, how are you going to collect? If you do find a good worker, be sure to be extra nice to him. They are very sensitive, and will quit in a heartbeat .

Some apartment buildings in NYC are mixed with rental units and owned units. The owner or management company will rent some units out and sell others. She likely owns her apartment unit.
That is what contractors do when they get more than they should. They lose the incentive to keep coming. A lawyer once told me to always make them work hard for their money! For e.g. if the contract says "after plumbing complete pay $15000" and the plumbing is only 90% finished then withhold 10% of the payment.
PSA: Pay in increments of 3rds! If anyone requires more than that to begin the job, choose someone else. A third upfront, a 3rd half way through, last 3rd upon completion!
Plus, purchase your own materials or ask for receipts. Many small contractors or handyman will need money for supplies. They also purchase salvaged materials that may be inferior.

I've had 4 contractors doing different jobs in the home. Always paid full or they needed to be paid along the way. And yet they never came back for months and when afew of them came back they did a crappie job. A couple was family member, one a preacher, and than someone who came to our church. Which him his family stopped coming. Humm never knew why. So we don't pay up front until the job is completed.
The Juge did not take into account that he had installed the doors then she noticed damage to the doors so he then took the doors down why should he not get paid for having to re-install them when the door manufacturer was at fault which Plaintiff admitted. I think the defendant does not have fluent English which hindered him from explaining...as well as understanding the questions from Judge Milian.
