@@ChristinaTodd1970 Actually, when it comes to pigment both black and white are colours. It is only when it pertains to light that black is the absence of colour and light a mixture of all colours which can be broken down and viewed when refracted through glass.
OK cool so so when is digital art we're not supposed to be using fully black and fully white obviously understand that the colour pencils are different because they're different who do not exactly why did not exactly black because you can draw white on white paper and you can still see the way come out because it's not exactly white but what where am I going to see you again or you I thought we was supposed to be using black and white that couldn't you use a really bright cyan or and a a really dark grey for the highlights and the darkness the darkest doctor ambient occlusion just wondering that's all
Your drawing is amazing and the fact that you did this with 3 colors was remarkable. It really was an interesting study in what you can did with a minimum color palette. Thanks so much for sharing.
You are amazing in every aspect of the word. Not only are you an incredible artist but your ability to teach is phenomenal. I truly appreciate you, your channel, and your skills. THANK YOU
I've missed these videos. I really enjoy watching them. However, I have loved doing the colored pencil academy. I have learned so much and really love and recommend it.
Brilliant demonstration of the power of color theory. I've downloaded your color guide in the past and it has helped me so much - Thank you! You have spoken about layering for years and as I progress, I can really see the difference when I've tried it myself. Thank you for sharing your talent, it has helped so many of us 🙂
I always say that every drawing goes through a "ugly stage". Especially, when your trying to color or paint in the skin tone. It always looks frightening in more ways than one. However, if you persevere you find that it will usually come out all right. It's almost like at this moment you are being tested to see if you have confidence in your abilities or not.
Hey girl! Amazing work! Goals! I watched your video the other day and my electric eraser just got to me from Amazon. Its amazing and I never would have considered it, if it wasn’t for you video. Love ya!
Wowie Kristy 🔥 amazing job , I've been recently studying for my law exams and I've totally abandoned art for like 5 months now and I've no hope picking pencil up to sketch but I'm sure one day I'll be able to get into art one day 🥰
Really enjoyed this video. I have been learning to do pencil drawings (portraits) and have only tried a colour drawing once and adding a little bit of coulour to my pencil drawings three times. I have a lot to learn but look forward to doing it. This video is inspiring and lets me know that I can actually do it. Thank you.
Beautiful. I think having different values of red, blue & yellow might help since when layering/burnishing with CP you can max out the tooth of your paper so easily & get wax bloom. A dark blue & darker, cooler red would help with the shadow areas.
Truthfully, I use all kinds of pencil crayons. All top quality. Faber Castell polychromes, Prisma colour, Faber Castell Gel, and I use them as I need them because they all work differently. I blend with odorless turpentine and even use markers. Creates great effects. This is a great tutorial. Awesome
I love the idea of using a few pencils as possible. One of my deepest regrets in terms of art supplies is buying this HUGE box of colored pencils. I've barely touched most of them and I just feel confused and overwhelmed when I look at them. Combine that with the price and the space they take up, I'm just ready to give them to someone else, lol.
i've done many portraits, layering light to dark colors in yellows and pinks to get flesh and in using PRISMACOLOR pencils, when i do hair and such i use MINERAL SPIRITS to MELT the colors together, to get smoother highlights, and solid darks where i need it. Articles were written on me "turping"...it's like watercolor pencils but great for heavier coverage and illustration.
Gorgeous! What a lovely drawing to do with only three colours... just amazing... ut I love the way you put black in first for the shaded areas,,, it makes such a difference...😊😍
I just subscribed to your Patreon! I am amazed at the wealth of educational content, I love it. Have been drawing my whole life but always stayed away from colored pencils because they scare me! I am really learning alot and doing lots of the exercises, too. Thinking of purchasing the color pencil academy too!
Amazing result, with only 3 colours ,plus black, yes I normally use white prismacolour for burnishing as polychromo white is not that good for that, I love each second of you class , but I know you are amazing excellent Artist, thank you so much for this tutorial, certainly very knowledgeable about the mixing the colours.♡
This looks amazing, great work as usual! This is such a difficult challenge, especially with colour pencils as they don’t blend as easily as paint, but you smashed it ☺️
Absolutely amazing! I love this and your brilliant energy and approach to drawing. You're an exceptional teacher and artist and thank you for spreading your knowledge and inspiration. You're a gem.
Yeah, those random bits of green is from the lighting director not compensating for how close the actress is to the green screen. The guys over at Corridor Crew complain about it a lot, since it makes the job of the digital effects people that much more difficult :)
Yes Kirsty, I've been loving your art challenges. Could you PLEASE, PLEASE try oil painting or acrylic paints on a canvas. I would so love to see you to try something new (like when you did digital art)! I don't know if you will see this comment but anyway I love your new video styles and God Bless!
A really great demo Kirsty, it makes me excited to try the basics more. Can you tell me the name/brand of the electric eraser with the narrow rubber? Thanks
Does she do the sketch using an overhead projector that puts an outline on the paper so you just have to draw it or does she actually free hand it by looking at it?
Awesome job Kirsty!!! ❤❤❤ Was so exciting watching your portrait develop. Thanks heaps for sharing the free guide❤ it will be well used and appreciated by me, ( I call myself a semi beginner. ) Still learning a lot.
Most yellows are a bit orange like canary yellow. The best yellow is very stark yellow that can take a little red to warm it up. Red is not really a primary color for pigments. Magenta is. As for blue, use cyan blue or a bright, light blue. If you mix your cyan and magenta and get a nice deep blue, that's the right color combination. To be set on the three colors, obviously black would be black, but using a really deep purple makes a fine rich black that is comes off darker than "black" black.
OMG i've only just started drawing in september 2022 , and only with graphite pencils , i'm finding it so hard atm with proportion and fore-shortening ,i can draw many loomis heads at all angles , but placing the features is incredibly testing for me ,either one eye is too big , the nose is to small, the mouth is on a wrong angle ,it goes on and on , your drawings are beautiful , i've got so much to learn , and probably not enough years left to do it lol
LOL while you were describing the challenge I was like, yeah you can do this with Luminance White, and then you whip it out. If you can mix black and white you can do just about anything.
This is really interesting!! I’ve been trying to find a colour theory book that’s informative, inspiring but very simple. I have ADHD and get overwhelmed by pages covered in text to the point where I can’t read a single line because my vision just darts all over the page lol. Like a child, I love books with lots of pictures and short paragraphs. I’m going to give your version a try 😁 thank you! I used to have one of those electric erasers! I didn’t understand how to use it as they just destroyed the paper, but that was before I worked with coloured pencils! My ex also made me feel embarrassed to use it as I stayed with his family a lot and it sounded like a vibrator… 🙄
hey kirsty love your channel it had helped me alot with my theory of coloured pencils but is it alright if you cld do a prismacolour skin tone set challenge by using them to create a portrait? jus t like how you had used the 3 colour challnge?
That's highly impressive and I don't think I could get on with just three primary colours and a black and white. The previous work you did - Drawing EVERY Skin Tone with ONLY 3 COLORS *5 Colored Pencils* - is also impressive but I felt it was a bit limited due to blue not being included. A person would need to go a long way to come up with a drawing as good as the one here - and using more colours in to the bargain.
It's amazing to know that you can draw with 3 colours! I was wondering if you could do that with animals as well? I'm not able to afford the faber castell polychromos but I was wondering if you could recommend some of the best colours to get separately for drawing fur.
Excellent! And amazing! I can’t believe you did that whole painting with three colors plus black and white. Well, actually I can. Good job.
I agree! it is amazing how just 3 colors can create so many different shades and values on a face!
Black is not a color it’s the absence of everything.

3 colors make up all the colors you see pretty much
That was incredible to watch, if I hadn’t watched I would have though you had used many different pencils. Beautiful finish

I truly appreciate you, your channel, and your skills.
THANK YOU
Nice work Kristy! I really enjoyed how you broke down the blending process. Colored pencils can be very challenging. Thanks for all the tips!
Love the new video!! So impressive. I tend to want ALL the colors, but this is a good reminder that we already have them.
The transformation on those skin tones was incredible. It went from scary to realistic. Love it.
You have a sublime gift, which is more than drawing, you are looking and recreating what you perceive intuitively.
It feels so good to have you back! Glad you're talking your time. Loads of positivity ❤️

Thanks. The colour guide is really useful and should take away a lot of the fear factor.
I bought that eraser thinking it was just a big handle. To my surprise it had a battery compartment. Best accidental purchase ever.
