well the thing about this is yes, you can do fantastic portraits with minimal colors, but most often, the colors you want to use are the colors you'll get in a large set. when you have a smaller set, most of them are just the flat primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, without much variation.
Interesting! I’d love to see you try this with a darker skinned muse. I want to try it too, I’m so used to my hundreds of luminance and polychromos pencils

You are such an amazing artist. Don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone constraining themselves with the number of colours they use. But I really think you’re right, you really get to know your colour theory when you limit yourself like this.
It really makes sense when you think about it. All colors come from the primary colors: red, yellow, blue. Theoretically those are all you need and the black and brown for contrast. And you are a talented lady, so these techniques are super easy for you. I made the mistake of buying tons of supplies in a bunch of media, and I get lost trying to use them all. A lot of what I bought was a waste as I will never use it all.
Very cool to see how much you can accomplish with a limited palette. I think it would also be instructive to see you do some drawings using the 10-12 pencils that come in the small sets since I suspect that it what many people end up starting with and it would be encouraging for them to see how to mix colours and get natural looking subjects with those starter pencils.
I wish I could show you were I started to where I am. I have reduced my color set for now and am loving the simplicity. Colored pencils are the more patient medium I found. And when you say light pressure and layering is fundamental it's absolutely true!!! Super patient!
This is mindblowing. I'm not sure how many of your viewers use colour pencils, but this is some insane skill level. I honestly didn't think it would be possible to achieve a remotely realistic result, but you NAILED it!
Whether you realize it or not, your skills are not so different from an Engineer. As an Engineer, I can appreciate the creative thought and problem solving skills of artistry like what you have done here. It's an exceptional job you have done. Very well done, my dear.
I admire the picture you colored with just five colored pencils. It really is about the shading, and layering the colors to create a realistic drawing.
This absolutely beautiful as always ♥️ actually i would like to thank you kirsty because without you i wouldn't have learned how to use color pencil correctly ..this helped me personally and my art channel ...thanks again 🙏♥️

*slow clap* This is jaw-dropping. I mean, seriously, this deserves a medal or something. Your art is so realistic.... only 5 colors? Dude, you're a freaking wizard with those. Love your art, 10/10 amazing!
Less colors means you need a lot of very soft layering off the same colors over and over to achieve a more realistic blending, specially for the red tones and the greys, but wow this was amazing!!!!
fantastic tutorial. simplifying in this way is much easier for a beginner to grasp the basics of colour pencil portraits without getting too over complex
This's an amazing demonstration of what formation and concentration on technique can do. But I can't stop thinking about, there's a little trick there, cause black it's not a color, it's a value so, you make a perfect contrast between the tones, generating the separation of the mid tones, gaining volume, despite of that, the work it's incredible and shows perfectly the intention here.

the white of the art paper is a very important colour in itself and you must take full advantage of it in illustration.
The materials don´t "make" the artist. The artist makes art even with his fingers. Beautiful. Congratulations!
