FFVIII Rosetta Stone Farming - Method A

  • A second video for winning Rosetta Stones, this one using a more realistically possible method of RNG advancement at this stage in the game. So no disc 2 Dollet save needed to do this strategy. Most of this is copypasta from the last one:
    A guaranteed way to meet all your Rosetta Stone needs. Because of a recently discovered exploit (first pointed out by ForteGSOmega) in the card RNG it was found that you could abolish rules on your first try with a little preparation. (If I get any requests I might cover this in another video).
    Mr Hangman noticed that the same RNG was used in the determination of the items you receive from the card players in D-District Prison. He attempted a guide based on knowing how far you were in the RNG by what items you won but due to another unknown RNG this strategy would only work on his file.
    With a table set up by Dirjel I was able to tell how much the RNG advanced from a certain path to the 200 gil card player in D-District Prison. Link to table here: ( tinyurl.com/FFV... )
    Knowing this number we can set up the RNG so that the item you receive from the '200 gil player' on floor 11 of District-D Prison will be a Rosetta Stone every single time. From a practical standpoint that basically means the 4x ability on all 3 players an hour into disc 2 with minimal effort.
    This video shows one way I found to manipulate the RNG for infinite Rosetta Stones that I've used with a lot of success. However keep in mind this way only works if you follow the path set out in it very closely (you have something like half a second leeway on either side).
    You can just watch the video and try and replicate it, but you will probably follow the path slightly off-key, rendering the process futile. To make sure you get your Rosetta Stones as quickly as possible I will explain this somewhat annoyingly complicated procedure in depth:
    Note: If you do not have enc-none at this point, you will need to learn it before going to retrieve Squall. If you do not have Diablos yet well... fight him. If you do not have the magical lamp or Diablos... I guess restart lol :S
    1) Hard reset
    2) Load up a save in D-District Prison 10th floor (this method uses one right after you got your weapons back from the guards and before you chased the Moombas up the prison to meet up with Squall).
    3) Exit the room (timing in this room does not matter).
    4) Hold left as screen loads and then change to holding up to walk up the stairs as quickly as possible.
    5) As next screen loads, hold down-left on the d-pad until you are all the way through the screen.
    6) Hold up-right as the screen loads and don't switch to up-left until you have reached the end of the curve on the wall you will eventually hit (pay close attention to the video here). Once you get half way around the circle holding up-left, simply hold left until the screen changes.
    7) Hold up as the screen loads and wait just a split second before pressing up-right.
    8) Challenge the card player to a game and then say no before actually starting up the game 54 times. Its painful but its the surest way to advance the RNG. If QoC is in Deling City do this 140 times.
    9) Challenge him again and actually say 'yes' to playing. 'Play' the game and win.
    10) You should get a Rosetta Stone. Joy.
    I advise running through the path a couple times before doing an actual run. This will let you get a feel for the path in a non-consequential situation. Also I advise counting to 54 in groups of 10, or if you are like me you will mess up ^.^
    Troubleshooting:
    If this didn't work, and you are: following the instructions correctly, making sure you are counting to 54 correctly and are following the path I described then you may be going too slowly. This is easy to fix; go at a similar speed but instead of challenging the 200 gil player and saying no before a game starts 54 times, do it 53 times. This should work but I would recommend trying with 54 "Challenge? No"s a couple times before you change to 53 as you will probably follow the path I laid out more quickly after a few runs through.
    Yes this is complicated, but it's arguably more drawn out in the explanation then it is in the execution. At this point for me a typical run takes around 5 minutes so hopefully learning the path and getting 3 Rosetta Stones wont take more than half an hour for you.
    This is the earliest and quickest supply of Rosetta Stones and once you get the hang of it it's very easy to do so I wish you good luck and please tell me if you are still having problems with the strategy (or if it works perfectly for you :D).
    Oh and sorry if the video seems slow. I think my PS1 is on its last legs so to speak.
    If any of you are interested, the original RNG exploit discussion (ongoing) started here:

    For the emulator, I save state on the 45th rejection mark. This way I won't accidentally miss the stone, regardless of needing more rejection/lesser rejection due to my run.
    For people who still don't understand the mechanics, here is a compilation:
    - When you are in a room in D-District Prison, RNG stops. Nothing you do here affects your chance.
    - Out of your room, in the circular area and stairs, the RNG starts working, that's why you need a run similar to the video. Once you reach his room, you can rest. There's no need to rush to him to start the game. What counts was before you enter the door.
    - Depending on how fast you run, you might need to tweak the numbers. 52 or 53 or 54 or 55. If you are slower than the video, reduce your rejection numbers. I use emulator, so my savestate is at 45th rejection mark. Afterwards, I refer to the list:
    +10 Eye Drops
    +9 Eye Drops
    +8 Remedy
    +7 Hi-Potion+
    +6 Eye Drops
    +5 Eye Drops
    +4 Remedy
    +3 Potion
    +2 Potion ------------ 53rd game
    +1 Potion ------------ 54th game
    -0 Rosetta Stone----55th game (ideally)
    -1 Potion -------------56th game
    -2 Hi-Potion+
    -3 Potion
    For people who keep getting potion, take note. That's because you are late/early. Emulator helps greatly in getting the stone because you can save state inside his room and it doesn't affect the RNG. Afterwards, it's just figuring out how close u are to the stone, and loading state when it's not rosetta stone.
    My run is not particularly smooth, but I get the stone every time because I figure out where i was in that list.
    Note: For people using retroarch emulator (android and iOS), what counts as hard reset is pressing the retroarch button while playing, and quit game. Getting out of the game by pressing the home button then killing task will not keep your in-game saves.

      Indeed you're right. I've been testing this and so far, as long as I don't take too much time during the path, I can get Rosetta Stone at the 55th game or around it. The thing is: even if I take longer, can I still obtain the thing? It will just be a matter of figuring out how many games to deny.

    • @selz2634
      @selz2634 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. My previous comment has said it. "If you are slower than the video, reduce the rejection number." For example, you are slower by 1-2 secs due to screw ups, it will fluctuate around 50-55.

      XXnegotronXX I stopped playing so don't quote me on it but I think the RNG does not reset. To get the stone every time you need to keep hard resetting your game and reloading the saves. Maybe you can try accepting his challenge earlier so its not in the potion fest where its unclear where you stand. (Try remedy)

    I just want to say I created an account so that I could personally thank RED XIII for uploading this video, Vilurum/ForteG Somega/Mr. Hangman/Dirgel for their hard work, and Sister for her Great FAQ - hope she updates it with this need2know info. Thanks all for making a great game even better!!!

    I got so frustrated trying to do this. I tried for several hours even trying slightly lower numbers; I couldn't do the d-pad method bc pushing left after you go up the stairs just resulted in me running into a wall and not moving!! ARGH! But after trying one more time, and decided to go UP in number, not down. It finally worked! Twice in a row.
    Apparently the secret for me was: use d-pad to get up stairs, use analog stick the rest of the way (as fast as possible, not mimicking this path), get stuck on the door to the cell briefly (happened all three times I managed to get it), and then say no 55 times, not 54....... Not sure if it was worth all that trial and error. XD
    Was playing on PS3 with the PS1 copy of the game.

    OMG it works ! :D First attempt following the D-Pad buttons in the description, cancelled card game 54 times, beat the man and got my rosetta stone ! I know this is old but I just found this; and after practicing the run a few times.. got it on my first go around despite QoC being in Deling! I must also note that analog sticks did not behave the same as D-pad and I def used D-pad here. Much gratitude.

    Played this guy legit for 3 hours and only got 1 Rosetta stone before I found this info, tried it with these tips and got 2 more straight away, worked perfectly. Playing with PS1 disc in ps3.
    If anyone is having difficulty try using the dpad not the sticks and it will work better. They seem to handle the pathing differently.
    Thanks for sharing all those years ago, helped me out today.

    I can't believe that things like this ACTUALLY work. Although it's incredibly tricky and it took me about three tries until I got it the first time, I've been getting Rosetta Stones every single time now, albeit the counting part is extremely annoying as well.

    I can absolutely say, this definitely works for the (epsxe). I did it once without save states to make sure I do every process right and got one rosetta stone, and I did it a second time to ensure I CAN use save states. The trick is:
    1) I follow the guide, step-by-step, up until I reach the prisoner's room.
    2) In the room, I began the long countdown of challenges. Each time I do this process, I save stat EXACTLY after saying 'NO' to EXACTLY 52 challenges. On the 53rd, I beat him, and get a...

    Confirmed working using an emulator with save states. Followed the video until 50 no's, then made a save state. Then after 3-5 more no's I got a Rosetta Stone. Three of them in three runs. Big thanks for the video. I found it after my brain melted from trying for ages to get just one of these the legit way.

    1)Follow Gastrophetes' guide up to the point that you enter the card guy's room.
    2) Challenge decline him 30 times
    3)Save state and soft reset
    4)Load the state on 10th floor, and go back up, challenge him, accept, win, get rosetta stone.
    This process leaves no room for error since you actually have to climb the floor 2 times, so RNG is a lot more strict, thus both runs have to be excecuted perfectly. Afterwards it's like Gastrophetes said. Save normally, load state, soft reset, load normally

    I play with an emulator on pc and it works!! The "save state" really save you time if you quick save on loading screen between the scenes so you don't have to redo if you mess up.
    However, I did notice when I try to repeat it again by hard reset, I have to increase the count by one. So for my first stone, its 54. And to get my second one it has to be 55, third one is 56. Also I notice if you did it right, he always used the exact same set of cards. Don't know if its just for emulator.

    Yeah, it was on Steve's guide, probably (sorry for the late reply, was out of town for a while). It's the guide I've been consulting for my perfect save file. By the way, I have undug an old save file in D-district prison, and tried what you said about saving at 54 tries and softresetting. I haven't gotten it to work. Are you sure it's viable? I don't know if this will help others, but on the right side of the map, when your holding UP+RIGHT switch to UP+LEFT when Quistis is just about where the dark part of the inner circle hits the light part of the floor. (You can see it in the video) I found that helped a lot with timing that.

    I just play the games without saving or resetting. It takes a while, yes, but I wind up with a ton of stuff refined from the cards. It's usually enough to upgrade one or two weapons to the maximum and get the others close, plus earn me a slew of magic. On this current playthrough once I got my first Rosetta Stone I kept right on playing, wound up with enough cards and items for Lion Heart and Strange Vision, then not long after that I got a second Rosetta Stone, saved, and quit for the evening. I'm going to go win enough cards to upgrade Quistis and Rinoa's weapons, probably win a third Rosetta Stone, and then move on.

    That's a neat exploit. Note that it will only work on the original PSX version of the game. You also need to hard reset the console each time. L1-L2-R1-R2-Select-Start won't work for this exploit.

    @boneking1009 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    it works: WATCH THE VIDEO
    also another tip: you dont need enc-none; i just got three in a row without enc-none. you need to get a random battle outside the save point room before saving for the hard reset; if you get into a battle, hard reset, get the battle outside the savepoint room, save, hard reset, and try again.

    To all the people who have a hard time entering the card guy's door with split second UP and then UP + RIGHT : You can actually make it count just by entering the room fast enough. This means that, when the screen loads, just hurry inside the room as fast as you can (meaning, not slower than the video shows) and the RNG will still work in your favor. I personally had trouble doing it, since I am using an emulator on the PC. I guess its due to the fact that the keyboard diffes from the D-pad.

  • @BlackWolf4830
    @BlackWolf4830 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if this works on PS2 or I'm not going fast enough.. because I'm trying to do the thing where the screen flashes and it's not working. Is it necessary to press those buttons as the scene changes?

    What a voodoo trick it is!
    But it did work. Thanks a billion!
    For reference, I am playing it on PSP.
    Made it on the 3rd attempt. The first 2 attempt didn't go well because I messed up a little before entering the card guy room.

  • @Blasdrim
    @Blasdrim 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    By the way, I have read somewhere ( you might have it on your description too, too lazy to check :P ) that if you get it done slower than normal, you can try going for 53 declines at the card guy. This works like a charm on an emulator, where save states save you from a lot of trouble. Just save the game at 53 declines, and if 54 won't do it, then challenge him at 53 with a loadstate :).

    I tried to play the card game against this (200 gil guy) over and over for hours to just get a single rosetta stone, what was very frustrating!
    then I found this awesome video and I had my doubts... honestly!
    but if you do it "right" (HARD reset [soft reset wont work], clean run, count to 54 "no"'s) you really get a rare rosetta stone EVERY time!!!!!!
    give it a try guys, it's simply great!! =)

    Hey great video, thanks. But I am using my PSP for this and whilst I can get to the card player without stuffing up, I always get a potion as a result. QoC is where she should be and everything.
    I have noticed my PSP loads slower than your video, would this affect the time?
    Thanks

    @LionHeartAOD 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Works perfectly! As soon as I got familiar with when to hold the different directions I did it on my first try ;) i thought that I wouldn't of done it with 54 no's because I diddent think I did it as fast as you but it looks like it don't matter being like a split second out ^^
    But anyways great video and well done to you!

  • @Azshmo

    can someone explain to me what exactly is happening with the RNG here? I'm guessing that the RNG is set to a particular point upon entering the room with the card player, depending on how much time has passed between the hard reset and getting to the room?
    And then declining card matches cycles through the preset RNG list until it hits a number that'll give you the 3/256 chance?

  • @Rosella500
    @Rosella500 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are a wizard. I tried about 5 times with the d-pad and was about to give up when I saw your comment. Worked like a charm. I'll still use the d-pad for the rest of the rooms but that one semi-circle one is just killer.

    well mister, let me say this: when i have seen this video first i thought was "this is crazy and downright impossible", but then i gave it a try and on fourth attempt i got it! it really isnt hard, only tedious (a bit). and i have pc version! thanks mate! ,'-D

  • @kirobaito
    @kirobaito 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Worked fine for me. The first time, I goofed on the final door, but it was just a split-second screwup and so I only challenged him 53 times and he gave it to me anyway. Just count how many "goofups" you have (thereby activating the RNG that number of times) and then just subtract that number from 54 and you should still have a shot at it.

  • @mindforgecollective
    @mindforgecollective 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fast update. I tried this again, and got another stone. Again I noticed that I had a slight hang up in my run and went for the 53 option. The next 2 times I tried this, I got a Potion, but i had noticed that I was now making the run flawlessly, so on my next attempt I also made the run flawlessly so I went for the 54 option and got my 3rd stone. In short, if you mess the run up just a little go for the 53 but if you do the run just perfect go for 54. Thanks to Gastrophetes for this video.

    Additional note: on PS3, you don't need to *quit* the game. Just press the PS button (round one between 'select' & 'start') then select 'reset game'->'Disk 2' and it'll work just fine.

  • @Blasdrim
    @Blasdrim 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hehe no worries there. By the way, I noticed something strange (and so, given the chance, I correct my previous posts) : Either I failed and I didn't excecute the first run correctly, or each run takes 24,XX , XX = some decimals. That is because, on my save state, I have to perform a half-circle around the card guy's room, towards him, before I challenge him, or else he gives me a potion instead. However, I rarely fail in such stuff, I'm pretty sure I excecuted the 1st run properly.
