    An old trick I learned with my 82 Virago... I had the same starter issues and before I replaced the engagement clutch - which ultimately solved the problem - I would shift into 1st gear and rock the bike back and forth a couple times. Then turn the key and hit the start button. Worked well as a temporary solution to get the bike started.

    Add some starter fluid to make it start and add Lucas to the gas to clean up lines a bit, clean up spark plugs and new plugs I think I should run after that, also check the on off switch sometimes they get stuck and you can put it direct too

    Its the sprag clutch in the starter motor assy. Same thing occurred on my TR1. Just use JB weld to join the friction plate and the outer orbital gear ring. Also, your bendix needs replacing. Good times.

    Carb cleaning is almost a given on bikes that have not been run in a while. I had a 1982 XV920. I now have an 1997 XV1100. They made major starter changes about 1984. The XV920 had a horrible starter. The 1990 should be a good bike. They had time to fix some of the bugs. I like your four legged assistant.

    Best bit of advice I can give is rtfm in the nice way is buy the Haynes/Clymer motorcycle electronics manual and read it. It covers all the different systems and their various arrangements of all motorcycle electronics and how they work. This will make trouble shooting much easier if you understand the whole system and it's components example would be battery 6 cells for 12 volt system lead acid type has 2.2 ish per cell so 13.2volts for fully charged battery, 12.5 volts is, well not great 12 is flat below that, is something is wrong level.

    Another thing, most all the connectors are specifically shaped to mate only with correct one (dummy proof), only 2 are swappable, the fuel pump and the connector for 1990+ pickup. Found that out hard way.

  • @RJSoftware2000
    @RJSoftware2000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, tci saftey does the start control by the neutral, some clutch, kickstand switch. Besides your hearing the solenoid click....!!!! You got solenoid leads backwards.

    First of all, your going a long ways around to figure out a starter when you could just jumper wire the starter terminal at the solenoid.
    I cant wait till you figure out changing solenoid leads. Battery to outside lead, shorter cable to inside lead, short cable goes back to starter lead.

    • @owen368
      @owen368 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree would be best to be right way round but in theory should not make a difference provided no unknowns of diodes, caps or other items in system. Industrial types often have diode ascoss activation side to stop ringing for instance. Surprised he didn't just borrow a test one from one of his other bikes I doubt cx500 is that different and should work for just a quick once or twice test.

    Great stuff man but those starter gears sound nasty! Is it the starter it’s self or the gears on the engine side that go bad on these bikes? I had to go fire up my CX and take it for a lunch break run after watching this!

    • @TheInja
      @TheInja  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha Yeah it was awful, and I knew it. But I need to confirm the bike will run so I didn't care. The starter gears need to be replaced anyway. The starter is fine, it's just the old-school starter mechanism (and gears) that fails on these bikes.

    • @dbuell
      @dbuell 5 ปีที่แล้ว
