  • Today - well, over the last week - I try my best to get the abandoned 1990 Yamaha XV1100 Virago to start up for the first time. However, she is hiding some ugly secrets like all the ladies on Tinder.

    NO,,,,, To test the engine take plugs out and left cover off again and twist flywheel to right. Normally you can remove the left small access cover and unscrew the smaller yet cap and reach in with wrench to turn, this is for timing and valve lash etc..
    The solenoid has to be wired correctly. The battery power lead to the outside terminal, the inner lead goes back to starter.

    Check the kick stand switch and make sure it's good. That was the reg/rec you found behind the passenger peg.. they are cheap to replace should you need to. Your shifter linkage isn't adjusted correctly so it isn't returning to the right position after the shift. You just have to mess with it a bit. I hope you get it all sorted out. They are fun little bikes. I am riding a 750 bobbed and it was in rough shape too... well it still is but it runs and gets me around. Lol good luck man!

    Flywheel nut and keyway are missing that's why PO "welded" it. Grind or chisel off those welds and replace the nut and keyway key. To see if it's seized just put the bike in gear with the two plugs out and push it to see if you can feel both cylinders turning. Also I think Virago's have a failsafe in the electric fuel pump if it fails to cycle the starter won't engage. Pull fuel lines off carbs and turn key to on and see if fuel pump is pumping fuel.

    Need to put a breaker bar on the crank and just see if the engine turns over by hand. Pull out the spark plugs, pour a little oil down each hole and let it sit for a while and with a breaker bar on the crank, the engine should turn over fairly easy. If it doesnt turn or is very hard to turn, the engine is indeed seized.

Next was a 2001 250R Ninja. Loved that bike! But I needed a little more. Now I have a 2007 Yamaha fz6 and a 1985 Honda Magna V65 I'm restoring. I wont part with them any time to soon. 2- Take out the carbs and clean them. You should change the jets too.

    • @TheInja
      @TheInja  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think I will be needing a carb clean...but according to the tow-yard I got it from, the bike seemed to have been running less than 4-5 months ago. So we'll see what she needs.

    • @oxydoze8373
      @oxydoze8373 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheInja all it takes is a particul of rust from the tank going in the carbs and they are done.
      Make sure the floats are adjusted properly.
      Then if you change altitude and also plan on altering the headers, you need to change the jets.
      Finally, if the bike was found on its side, maybe the cylingers are now full of oil or even jamed.

    Had the same thing on my xs1100 made the same exact noise motor was seized from sitting for 5 years. But a lot of rocking back and forth with a breaker bar at the crank and pb blaster and it freed up. Runs great now so I’d check if the motor turns over and check for rust in the cylinder if it’s been sitting for a long time. Although I’m not the best mechanic.

  • @RJSoftware2000
    @RJSoftware2000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, the power from the battery goes to outer solenoid terminal. The inner terminal goes back to starter. The starter switch is the small blade terminal. So your getting full voltage its that the solenoid is directional as is starter. The gear that starter slides into locks directionally.

    • @TheInja
      @TheInja  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a brand new, same model battery as the original, so I don't think it's the battery. Also tried with a pretty beefy jumper pack so I don't think it's a lack crank power. But it very well could be the starter is not getting enough juice.

    If you take spark plugs out and put it in gear and turn the back wheel does engine turn over or as others suggest take small cover other side from flywheel off and you should find bolt head on basically the end of crank try with socket to turn there it will problably be part of ignition side of things so might unbolt not major issue just don't move the backing plate relative to it and bolt back up should have alignment pin or the like for ignition timing. The electronics "thing" on the back of the ali footrest looks to be the regulator/rectifier unit which is part of the battery chargeing circuit not starter related. Can prove this by following wires back from it 3 all same colour (usually) will go back to a rubber block on flywheel crankcase other 2 problably red and black colour should go to battery possible 3rd wire to electronics box. Should be test for reg/rec unit listed in a decent manual usually £100 in UK so worth checking before swap the small earth connection you found and cleaned is not the main one should be another heavy duty one to frame and engine clean that. People forget starter motor takes very large amount of current to spin engine and therefore needs as good a return path out from motor as into it. The solenoid is clicking but another item to check is by in this case either bypassing it or borrow temp borrow from bike or car that its able to handle the relevent current sometimes the internal contacts can give out. Check earthing 1st before solenoid.

    • @owen368
      @owen368 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi with solenoid have got part way through prt4 it preselector type thought it was stand alone type (was hard to tell as your camera shots jump about and focus isn't always great) in which case test via borrow from other bike different bike not going to wok/fit not had to trouble shoot that type so have less can suggest on trouble shooting bar they have a rep of giving more greif. If motor turns over with spark plugs out, hold plug against engine to earth it by the plug cap to avoid a shocking experience and see if you get spark that will show if ignition is working, which being older style sold state it should. Next step will be clean up of carbs as modern fuel is not stable and tends to gum things up if left standing which means it probably wont run or if it does not properly. By solid state I mean no contact breakers (points) but no ecu/emu basically not cpu/computer control of more modern systems.

    I picked up the same project a couple weeks ago and have replaced the battery, then the starter solenoid, and have found that my idler gear set is pretty worn. I know on older models you can flip the gear to use the other side of the teeth, but on the xv1100's it isnt quite that easy. Is there no other way to easy fix this other than buying a new idler gear set?

  • @minerma
    @minerma 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you think it's to do with dodgy wiring, why don't you just get a second hand harness from breakers. If you suspect the engine is seized, lock two nuts together on the crank shaft (where that weld is) and turn the engine over by hand. These bikes have a bad reputation of having bad earths, which effect starting.

      @@TheInja Fuel light supposed to come on when the start button is pressed, it goes out once it started.
      The solenoid has two jobs: it is the actuator for the "catapult" as you called it, also has two big copper contacts inside and it doubles as the starter relay. If it is full of crap or corroded it won't conduct enough juice to the starter.
      If the pistons are seized try soaking them through the spark plug holes with some PB blaster or Seafoam Deep creep and hopefully that loosens the rings up. You could turn the crank from the clutch side, the primary drive gear hopefully still has the nut on it instead of a bloody tack weld shite... That side has a crappy RTV gasket as well so you have to dig in there anyway. So yeah, mke sure the engine is not locked up and if you can turn the crank it must be the flippin' solenoid.
