Homemade Cat Food Recipes Vet Approved | Basic Blueprint

- This easy homemade turkey and pumpkin pate cat food recipe make 5-6 days of food for the average cat. It costs the same or less than many commercial and premium cat foods out there that are laden with by-products, chemicals, and ingredients that are unfit for human consumption.
My recipes follow a basic blueprint:
* Choose 1 pound of protein that is lightly cooked in coconut oil
* Add 1 cup of water or bone broth (without the added onion and garlic and salt)
* Add the needed calcium, taurine, trace minerals and vitamins, and grass-fed beef organ meat. All ingredients in the Holistic Vet Blend nutrient mix are human-grade.
* There are optional add-ins such as 1-2 eggs, greens (kale, spinach, parsley), pumpkin, carrot, and some squash to name a few. You can add 2-4 TBSP to the recipe of any one of these.
* Last but not least you will need an Omega-3 source. Choose from
sardines in water, mackerel, salmon, or HVB Icelandic Omega -3 fish oil.

If I could jump through the screen and hug you I would. I searched how to prepare healty food for cats and this was right up at the top. I have been feeding my cats merrick back country pouches. I havent been happy with the food and now its basically gone. I am a big organic and more plant based diet for me and my cats are my world and deserve quality healty food. This was amazing! Exactly what I was looking for. I wasnt sure how the added nutrients work but now I see theres things to add, PERFECT. I am glad you said over 6 to use senior. I cant comprehend my cats being seniors. They were born spring of 2016 and they still my BABIES I want them to live a very long and healty life. Enough of this garbage food. Im so happy I found this thank you!!!!
Big virtual cat hugs coming your way! Glad I could help you and your fur babies. I have a free mini cookbook you can download at www.holisticvetblend.com :)
Love this comment sooo much!! ❤
@@annehopkins513 I just ordered a bunch of stuff and the cookbook a few hours ago! I’m so excited. Thank you!
Thank you ! I have 5 cats and was never comfortable feeding them canned food plus it gets very expensive. I always wanted to make their meals for them ! ❤
Wait until you see the difference in your cats energy and vitality!
im glad to see someone else with many cats say this
Heyy, I’m abt to get a 2month old kitten. Can u suggest me foods which I should feed her I’m really confused if I should go with commercial food or homemade
Hey there. Honestly just start googling. You will enpower yourself but learning. We wonderful thing about our time is we have accesd to everywhere now. If you type in your question in Google you will find answers. Its how i learned what to feed my babies.
8 oz Pumpkin, 1lb ground turkey, premix, kale, catnip all cooked with coconut oil 5:20
8oz is a cup, I believe the recipe calls for only 1/4 cup of “veggies” in this case pumpkin . :)
Thank you for not just the recipe, but especially for explaining why each ingredient is included.
You are more than welcome 😊
Looks like a good recipe! Eggs sure aren't cheap any more but still worth adding if available! Thank you.
Yes, eggs are expensive right now due to the Avian influenza outbreak, but the price will come down soon hopefully!
Wow. I don’t eat eggs, I’ll be feeding my cats eggs. Great video.
Plus you can bake & grind the egg shells for calcium! Best source for that.
As long as you make sure all of the other essential nutrients are there. That is why the premix is important so you have taurine, essential vitamins and minerals.
Today I watched a video of how dog food is made and what’s in it. Can’t imagine it being any different for cats. Felt miserable. Had I known I would have not given them commercial food! Your recipe is the best I’ve seen by far and I’ve put in an order. I really hope it works out with my picky cat lol!
You can also download our free mini cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com for more easy recipes. Let us know how it goes!
The best part about making your own is you can customize it for your picky eaters, my dog's allergic to white meat and chicken is in EVERYTHING plus it's only 20 bucks a week for my large dog, his fur is really soft, and his gas doesn't smell
It's literally the same recipe as hers lol so ik this'll work for my cats too
I've found that the servings of Meomix I've been feeding my cat no longer sates him. He's about 6-years-old, so maybe his dietary needs have changed, or, perhaps Meowmix is cutting their food with filler to keep prices down in a market where cat food prices have become absurdly high.
Either way, little guy deserves better eats. This video was a good guide for what to and not to put in it. I may not outright go full time homemade, but it's probably a good idea to supplement his diet with some homemade meals.
Love how you explain this and even added graphic for visual aid.
Glad this helps you! Stay tuned for more videos.
thank you, this is such an easy-to-follow guide!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much! I really love this. My cats so enjoy the homecooked meals!❤😻🐾
You are more than welcome! Glad they like it!
Interesting. Just watched another cat food home made video by another vet and he says NO vegetables in his recipe as well as no carbs. I would think vegetables are good for them after all they eat grass. I actually liked this video and am going to try this for our 7cats. ❤❤❤
Perfect! I take my cats outside and they love to nibble on grass when we are out there.
My vet stressed to me as well that cats are obligate carnivores so only meat. The grass they "eat" is not to fill their stomach. so many cats become diabetic and tnat is due go the carbs in their food. My last adopted cats reached the 20s.
Some cats have dental issues and can't chew. A minimal amount of certain veges can make up for various vitamins & minerals (bones, organ meat, etc.) I think this is a great starting point for people who want to move to raw food or even sticking with prepared food. Easily accessible ingredients. I have a premix that takes care of everything except omega 3, so in my case I won't have to bother with veggies at all. Anything to get away from the sugary mess in cat food aisle.
omg! I am so glad, I was suggested to watch your channel. I am going to try these recipes. I have one cat that could eat anything and the other one, just the opposite. Thank you so much.

Thank you I have 4 cats 2 with special needs and it gets expensive buying quality cat food. This will save SOOOO much money ❤
I'm glad that you find my videos helpful! 😊
I just got the premix and Icelandic oil and made my first batch. It's a hit! My kitten has IBS and I'm hoping that this will do the trick. At first I thought it was a little pricey but at $2 a 2.5 ounce can of special kitten food I think I'm gonna save money in the long run.
Glad they loved it! ❤
I have attempted to make my own cat food in the past. (Not this recipe) with zero luck. My cat IS picky. I think I will try it again and see what happens. I used part of a roasted chicken, so that would be very different. I'll find some uncooked chicken somewhere!
I can’t find premix or oil? Looked on Google & Amazon - help please. I am a beginner at this thanks

My cat has ibd.
Fantastic recipe, thank you!!
Thanks! More to come in the future!
I came across this video the other day and out of many I have watched yours was the most informative. I went to your site and downloaded the free mini cookbook and decided to and bought the full paperback cookbook for cats. I haven't owned a cat since mine died back in 2011 and recently a stray cat has adopted us. We took him in and took him to be scanned.... not microchipped and not neutered either. He looks to be about 3 yrs old they said when I got him scanned. Here the law is you have 30 days to actively look for potential owners and I did that for over a month while I fostered him as the shelters here are overrun with cats and kitten season has begun but 2 weeks ago the shelter told me that it has been 2 months no and no one has come forward and I could bring him in and they would prepare to try to adopt him or if I wanted to keep him I could as the 30 day period has lapsed. We chose to keep him and now he is part of our family. I've had him on ACANA cat food...... he gets half wet and half dry per day. (he just grazes on the dry cat food so he doesn't get much at all.... 1/2 - 3/4 c per day if that.) And the ACANA canned cat food ingredients look good but the cost is just crazy. Here it costs $2.79 for a 5.5 oz. can. For a months worth that is about $84 a month. I've been researching and wanting to switch him to homemade cat food which I'm seeing is healthier for them anyway. Thank You for sharing this video. I learned so much from it.
Now in your recipe for the 1 lb. meat can that be 1 lb of regular meat (meaning not the prepackaged ground meat)? Like I was thinking buying bone in chicken thighs, skin on and boiling them and making my own bone broth.... just water and the meat...... and then removing the chicken from the broth and let cool before removing all meat from the bones and then blending like you did the ground chicken.
Just curious. Again thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thanks a ton for the support and for all the love you've shown to your new cat. It's awesome to hear you're considering homemade food. And yes, you can make your own ground chicken. It's actually a great option for cats, as it's lean and high in protein. Sounds like your kitty is in for some delicious meals!
Could you make a ckd cat recipe? I’m thinking of buying the premix and start cooking homemade for her
Yes I’m looking for that one too
This is great video. I blead mine up in my blender and then cook in the crockpot. I feed 4 cats so far there very happy healthy kitties .

This is sooo amazing!! Thank you so much!! 🐈
You're so welcome!
I am going to switch my cat onyo homemade food, it seems more healthy and I like your recipe.
Would it be suitable for kittens?
Yes, but we generally recommend the Feline Blend for kittens; if adding egg add the shell as well for additional calcium. Here's a blog post for transitioning your cat's food: holisticvetblend.com/blogs/news/ditch-the-kibble-tips-for-changing-your-cats-food-when-you-have-a-picky-eater

@@HolisticVet He's thriving and a very happy boy. Thanks to you! His favorite recipe is ground turkey or chix with sardines and egg. He is NOT a fan of carrots or sweet potatoes.
Best cat name ever. 😅
Thank you for sharing!! I have a Russian and a, Snowshoe Siamese! One has health issues concerning his kidneys and they are extremely picky eaters! I ran out of cat food and decided to make some! I used canned mackerel in brine that I rinsed and deboned. White Rice cooked, a hard boiled egg, pumpkin and water! I need to get some of the premix to add nutrients! I'm going to start making my boys homemade food!!! 😊 Blessings
Hi, I'm glad that you are starting to make homemade food. Do not add rice for cats. They are carnivores and are not meant to have a lot of carbohydrates. You can download the free mini cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com to learn more about the recipes.
@@HolisticVet thank you.... Blessings
We have chicken, turkey, fish flavored cat food. Why not mouse/rat flavored. They could use the NYC rats make them into food- problem solved...am I wrong?
I’ve been wondering the same thing. It’s a renewable resource for sure 😆
Rats breed easily and could be raised for cat food in an apocalyptic situation. Coturnix quail are easy to raise as well and easy to butcher.
Friskies used euthanised animals for their pate which has lead to the death of many once healthy animals. Would you just eat something chemical laced? Like an NYC rat that eats just about anything?
Weird way to say you don’t care about the well-being of cats.
Wild rats and mice carry disease and worms...no thank you
As a NYC Native, I can testify that those rats are practically radioactive, so no. 🤢
We also add olive oil and nutritional yeast to their food.
No need to add to this recipe.
Thank you! Glad I found this channel
You're more than welcome!
I am so glad I found you! I had 3 cats which turned into 9! My cat had last 2 litters so we kept most of them. My question is how many times a day should I feed them this and how many batches a week should I make? I have been buying them the Kirklands dry cat food because at one point it was just too many cats. So now that we decided to have 9 cats I want them to be on the same holistic eating lifestyle.

Nice recipe. Thanks for sharing! I saw you’re adding the whole eggs. I’ve always heard/learned that vets always recommend to remove separate the egg whites and only add the yolk. Let us know what you think!
Raw egg whites have avidin which binds biotin. Once they are cooked it is not a problem. So raw is a no-no. Cooked is o.k.:)
@Lama- yes, egg whites are not tolerated by cats….
First of all this is amazing. I have a question about the coconut oil - Google is telling me that cats shouldn't have a lot of it. Any thoughts?
Hi! Coconut oil is a safe choice to add to your cat’s diet. It is mainly known for maintaining a proper diet and healthy coat. Just make sure to follow the recipes. You can download the free mini cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com to learn more about the recipes.
Thank you for this wonderful and informative video! I am doing research to feed my two ten year olds and my five year old.

Can you make a couple weeks, or a month’s worth ahead of time? If so, is it a matter of freezing everything and thawing out as needed? Thanks!
Yes, after cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be refrigerated for up to 6 months.
Hey, Doc! I went through your cat cookbook and noticed that it says 80% lean meat for all recipes. Most ground chicken I find at the grocery store has misleading labels saying that it's " low calorie" or "skinless" but doesn't state a percentage.. so I decided to make my own minced chicken 😀.. I'm feeding a kitten so which parts do you suggest that I use and how much of each part? Should I remove the skin or keep some? Thanks for your efforts 😊
You can add it to your grind if you choose.
Great recipe! Thank you so much for sharing this!
My pleasure 😊
Wonderful video! I've been wanting to make my cats homemade cat food and this is easy to follow. I think I will pass on the organ meat. I am a vegetarian and that would just be too hard for me, although I realize my cats need meat. Turkey meat it will be. My cats also prefer pate.

Is it possible to complete the recipe then freeze-dry it, and reconstitute it with water later? I know freeze-drying is a great way to retain nutrition and make foods store well, I am curious how it would go with this cat food.
I’ve really enjoyed your videos! My cat has been thriving on this diet and using the treat recipes for clicker training has been a big win!
After cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be frozen for up to 6 months. I'm not sure about freeze-drying but you can't reheat the recipe because of some nutrients in there that is heat sensitive.
I have a really fussy cat who loves the high quality food trial boxes and then turns his nose up as soon as I order the first box, so I am hoping home cooked meals will prove the better option as he only seems to like commercial brand food consistently (which I hate). Although this is a nightmare for me as a vegan, his diet comes above my morals and this is very helpful and easy to follow, thank you !

My cat has stomatitis (mouth disease) and commercial cat food is not working. He doesn't chew but licks the juice. This looks good to us. We are going to make it. Adding liver for calcium. Any suggestions ill be appreciated. Thank you!!!
I would recommend adding as much bone broth as you can (make your own so you can limit the salt). Blend the recipe well and add as much liquid as you can.
I will do that. Waiting for the senior pre mix to arrive and will remake the batch. I did make the bone broth. Thank uou so much.@@HolisticVet
Make all its food puree
I’m looking to make this for my two Bengals . One of them is an extremely fussy eater and pukes every single day because he doesn’t like any food I ever give him. Blood work and other testing shows he’s fine, so I’m really hoping this will help him out.!!
I find that adding sardines to the recipe helps. Try a few different proteins such as lamb, turkey, and bison. Good luck and let us know!
@@tr5680 my cat doesn’t have an allergy. I just tried to make him 2 different recipes and he walked away from them. It’s upsetting. Feeding him is a nightmare, yet all vet testing and allergy elimination show he is fine 🤷🏼♀️
@@alexandrad2228 Chicken doesn't agree with my cat and it's in most cat foods so I understand your problem. Turkey mince cooked with a little water however did work. Mine ate it chopped into little pieces. She recommends trying different proteins.

Would adding chicken livers be adequate organ meat? If so, what would I eliminate from the recipe?
Thank you!! If you don't mind, can I ask how you would feel about freezing the recipe?

@@HolisticVet thank you🙌🏽🙌🏽
I'll give it a try with my fussy cats. They prefer chunky gravy style so I guess less time in blender.
Also can I add some chicken hearts?. Or chicken liver? Would I leave out some of the ground turkey to keep same ratio of meat to supplements?
Hello G Silver! There is organ meat already present. You could add some additional chicken heart or gizzard, but I would not add additional liver as there would be too much Vitamin A in the diet. And you would stick to the recipe. For example, if you did 3/4 pound of ground turkey or chicken and 1/4 pound of gizzards and heart meat.
This is much appreciated but I was wondering how I would introduce this diet to my cat since I’ve been feeding her dry and wet food.

Thank you! Is this good if my cat has kidney problems? I used to give him urinary food but now he’s not chewing properly and is getting pretty underweight
Hi there. I would avoid adding sardines as these add not only protein but use omega-3s instead. This will only add healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. I also add a lot of bone broth and/or water to help. I have my own inside cats (6) & take care of 24 rescue cats outside. Out of complete frustration, since the onset of Covid, there has been a marked decline in ALL retail cat food, specifically the companies are adding junk to save money. When the outside cats back off from their dishes, you know there are ingredient changes. And, not to the good. I have tried every conceivable brand & the winner is a $60. 10 lb bag of Orijan. Too expensive for 32 cats. Therefore, happily ,I found you and wondered if you could project the
weekly cost of feeding these guys the right way. I believe making my own is the right decision.
Would appreciate your opinion so much!!
I do not sell the supplement in bulk as of yet. But it would be comparable to the cost of canned food. I will work out the cost per ounce and post it.
I love your recipe but wondering do I just keep in the refrigerator for a week? Do you feed it cold or remove it 30 minutes prior to feed time? How much and how often? I’m so excited to follow your recipe! Thank you so much for showing step by step ! Very helpful.

Greetings, I am seeking clarification.
At the start of your reply here, you state cooked homemade food can be refrigerated 4 days but later in your comment you state 6mos. Did you mean "raw food" been be "frozen" 6mos?
Do you offer a raw food recipe or were you stating a general reference for proper storage?
Thankyou ❤❤

Been searching around trying to find an actual book paperback or hardback?when all this goes down digital stuff won't be much use especially if you're running through the woods thank you great info

Hi! How do you suggest storing and serving the food?
After cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be refrigerated for up to 6 months.
If my cat doesn't seem to be able to digest fish well what's a good way to give her omega 3 in homemade pet food? Sometimes fish will give her the runs or even cause some blood in her stool.
We have fish oil and algae oil that is a good way to give her Omega-3s. It is available in our website at www.holisticvetblend.com
another question, do you let the rest of the pate in the fridge or in the freezer during the week?
After cooking, the prepared diet can be refrigerated for 4 days. If feeding raw, the diet should be frozen in servings for up to 4 months and thawed out for each feeding thereafter. Cooked food can be refrigerated for up to 6 months.

May I ask you, after you add bone broth do you still cook it, or you turned the heat off? Looks like great recipe, thanks for sharing. I have three cats, of 12, 14 and 16 years old, always fed them with dry food but it seems they have enough of it, they just won't eat it any more.
Thanks for this question, I was wondering the same!!!
@@HeffyMatrix You are welcome 🤗! While waiting for an answer I started to cook by basically following this recipe. After adding bone broth I still cook for a while and than add meat I cooked separately, in other dishes. Maybe I'm doing wrong, but my cats are doing MUCH, MUCH better, they look better, their fur is shiner and softer, they are more calm, my 17 year old cat dementia is reduced...I am very grateful for this recipe!!!
I always add chilled bone broth or water to cool the recipe quickly (to save time) before I add the premix.
Hi Dr. I have a question! How do you portion this out? How many times a day do you feed?
Hi, you can download the free mini cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com to learn more about the feeding guide for cats.
very practical video, thank you
Glad it was helpful! :)
Question, I ordered the feline premix and it came in the mail ( woohoo! ) but I don't see Taurine in the ingredients list and am concerned if I need to add it or not -- I know how important Taurine is for kitties!
Taurine is added to the premix. The premix also has grass fed beef heart which is an excellent source of taurine.
My cat is underweight with IBD. Would this recipe work for her?
High quality protein and clean ingredients could be very helpful.
Thank you for this, I want to start making my own food too for my furry partner. If I do buy the organs, do I incorporate it with the turkey? Or that will be separate and also how much?
There is organ meat already present in the premix. You could add some additional chicken heart or gizzard, but I would not add additional liver as there would be too much Vitamin A in the diet. And you would stick to the recipe. For example, if you did 3/4 pound of ground turkey or chicken then you should only add 1/4 pound of gizzards and heart meat.
Great vid for this simple receipe. I am interested in adding your cat holistic blend to their food. I am preparing these meals for my 10 week old kittens. I have read that kittens need calcium hydroxyapatite instead of calcium carbonate. I do not want to feed too much calcium by adding 2 types of calcium to their diet. What would you recommend using for my kits? Thank you.
We recommend the Feline Blend for kittens; if adding egg, add the shell for additional calcium.

I buy the premium cat food (I have 5 cats, 2 kittens, 2 teens and 1 senior), but lately been considering converting to a real food diet. I had a dog that's life expectancy was supposed to be 8-10, but lived to 14 and I'm convinced its because I fed him real food. Thank you for the recipe.
1 question, does the premix have calcium? I was going to add egg shells to it but not sure if its required.
Yes, there is calcium in the premix. You do not need to add additional calcium.
I would love to serve this to my cat, but every single time I've tried to give her something out of the ordinary or even raw food, she refused it. Now she doesn't even want her wet food. I'm at a loss- how did you get your cats to eat this or did they just take to it immediately?
Here's a blog post about transitioning your cat to homemade food: holisticvetblend.com/blogs/news/ditch-the-kibble-tips-for-changing-your-cats-food-when-you-have-a-picky-eater. You can try different proteins or try drizzling some tuna or sardine juice (from canned in water). Offer a few teaspoons here and there. Try mixing it with whatever they are eating.
super helpful and i think it’ll be cheaper than buying cat food! do you have a recipe book for dog food too?
Hi there! Thanks for watching our videos. It is indeed cheaper and more healthy for our cats. You can download my free cookbook that contains both recipes for cats and dogs. Download it on our website www.holisticvetblend.com
Thank you for this recipe
Most welcome 😊
I just tried the recipe made with turkey and Sardines. My cat ( a lovely siamese who is not picky at all) ate it and enjoyed it. I tried the recipe first without the premix to be sure first. I just ordered the mix and oil. My question is do I need to add the oil to the sardine recipe also? Also she is a senior cat with early stage kidney disease. How can I make this more kidney friendly?
Yes, you can add the Fish oil for added Omega-3s. Our Senior Blend Premix has added B vitamins, fiber, and kidney-friendly Phosphorus levels. You can add more liquid to the recipe to get more fluids in.
@@HolisticVet One last question. Just found out she's allergic to all poultry, do you use ground beef instead? Will this be ok since there is already beef liver?
Can you make a video of you making the chicken bone broth?
Hi, I have a turkey bone broth in my channel that you can do with chicken as well :)
This looks like an excellent recipe. I do have some questions. Currently I can't afford the vitamin mix but I'd still like to give my elderly cat extra nutrition. She has to take thyroid medicine and is still so thin so...
1. Can I give her this full recipe once I can buy the vitamin mix?
2. Would it be OK to at least give her a little pumpkin and/or cooked egg right now with her canned food?
3. Would just a little egg and pumpkin be ok for my other cat too? At least for now.
4. Is quinoa OK to give them occasionally? It is highly nutritious.
Thank you, Alicia
You can enjoy preparing all the recipes without Holistic Vet Blend® supplements, but the meals will lack the vital nutrients necessary for long-term use. You can add cooked egg and pumpkin, but I do not recommend quinoa. You can check the free mini cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com to learn more about feeding your cat.
Pumpkin undigestable for cats yeah? What would be the point?
Neither cats nor dogs can digest the cell walls of plants but lightly cooking or pureeing them allows them to digest some and benefit from the phytonutrients and antioxidants in vegetables. I add a few Tbsp's of either parsley, spinach, pumpkin, or squash to my recipes.
How would you change the ingredients for a cat with urinary tract issues?
First of all, please make sure you are only feeding wet food. Prescription diets drive cats to drink more and they are thus less likely to develop crystals. The premix was balanced to satisfy both NRC and AAFCO nutrient requirements for phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium just like other maintenance diets. You might find that you may need to do a combination of prescription canned and homemade or commercial canned and make sure your cat is drinking enough as many cats do not have much of a thirst drive. You'll have to monitor along the way with any transitions to make sure there are no crystals.
Thank you for this video!!! Great info
You are so welcome! Stay tuned for more!
How many calories is the whole pound with everything mixed in? and how many cups does it yield?? How many calories are in the two table spoons of the feline senior blend please?
Hi, you can download the free mini cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com to learn more about the recipe and the premix. Thanks!
Thank you very much for the healthy food options.
I've been feeding my dogs Chicken thighs, kale, sweet potatoes carrots and the mix for the last 3 months. They look great.
Question, can i feed my cat chicken thighs? Do I need to remove the skin? Thank you!!
You need to remove the bones. You can grind up the meat with the skin.
I am feeding 14 outside cats and growing need recipes that make lots
Hi, you can download the FREE cookbook at www.holisticvetblend.com for batch cooking.
Some of the ground turkey I've seen has rosemary extract in it. Is it still ok to feed them this? Thanks!
That's perfectly fine. It's at such a low inclusion rate there should be no problem.
