People are free to add carbs and veggies to the meat, but it doesn't change the fact that cats are obligate carnivores. Their digestive tract does not have the enzymes to break down the carbs and veggies. Having active and slim kitties does not add enzymes to their digestive tract. 😻 Of course they won't drop dead but it will shorten their lives. I am the happy owner of many kitties who live(d) beyond the 20 years of age. Just for your info.

You are 100% correct!! Cats are strictly carnivores. Dont use the "they are domesticated now" LOL. Yes, their environment is domesticated BUT their bodies have NOT CHANGED. NO CARB/STARCH AND NO VEGGIES SHOULD PASS YOUR KITTIES LIPS...EVER! I just lost a 23 year old kitty and the one before that was 22 yrs. old. ALL of them were on a raw food diet with supplements. Supplements are super important. I have been a health advocate for pets and a raw food diet for over 30 years. I always tell folks in the beginning of mentoring for a raw food diet this: 'Mimic the wild'. No, they are not in the wild but 'mimic' the diet of when they were in the wild.

      Yes, cats are obligate carnivores.
Also, I feed mine a simple raw diet with added Taurine and sometimes other human-grade quality supplements.
Their natural diet does NOT contain vegetation.
You may see cats chew on a stem of grass or plant, but it is for a type of medicinal purpose, not for nutrition.
In fact, I have never seen any cat out in the wild, cooking it's food . 😂

Agreed, no carbs in any form, whether vegetables or grains.
Still, the ingredients are human grade, and that’s better than the majority of mass produced pet foods…
I make raw to lightly cooked, human grade food for my cats (and one dog). Costs a little more than this recipe, but honestly, not by much.

I am feeling 48 cats total right now and I have IBD and skin conditions. I started your turkey and chicken cat food 1-1/2 years ago, slowly replaced wet cat food with your recipe and I have no cats with skin dermatitis and only have one cat with IBD episodes once a year. I do find that the turkey recipe without flax seed is best for the cat with IBD. They do still get dry cat food, however, they are eating less and seem to be in good health. Thx for your help. My best regards for your time and sharing this information. ps i HAVE DROPPED BY FOOD COSTS BY $200 PER MONTH.

Lately I’ve been struggling financially. I look and look at my budget to find ways to cut it and instead I realize I’ve been spending more and more and more on my cats. But they’re older and they need to have healthy food and I don’t wanna give them cheap dry food. They need something better but it’s so expensive and I’m buying cheap cat food.
So thank you for giving me another option

you can also stretch your kibble if you have left over bones like from a chicken. If you boil the bones into a bone broth. The bone broth is filled with minerals, nutrients, fats and protein, you can add the broth to some kibble and make "a kibble strew" I use to feed the neighborhood cats this mixture of kibble, broth, and added a little bit of wet food and mixed it up. The cats all loved it compared to each of the ingredients individually. The kibble absorbs the liquid, so you kitty is getting some fluids but also a "moist" food. My personal cat likes her "Kitty ramen" she's old and doesnt have most of her teeth anymore, but she loves her:
      Broth+Kibble
      Broth+ wet
      Broth+Kibble+Wet
      Broth+Chicken
      Broth+Kibble + chicken etc.
Chicken paws aka chicken feet, are fairly cheap, and they make a good broth. If you're able to buy chicken just cut out the bones for your cat. I usually save my bones from the chicken thighs and quarters I buy.

Having a background in veterinarian nutrition I can flat out tell you that there is nothing wrong or unhealthy with kibble. You need to look on the bag at the guaranteed analysis to get the mineral and vitamin content (which is the most important thing to make a good selection of kibble). According to the the veterinarians bible for companion animal nutrition (small animal clinical nutrition textbook) for a senior cat you what the proper reference ranges to be in as follows: Protein 30-45%, Calcium 0.6-1.0%, Phosphorus 0.5-0.7%, Fat 10-25% Fiber 0.3%, Taurine 1000-2000 ppm. If you knew everything I know about it you'd realize that you don't need to be looking at foods that are marketed for just senior cats (as a lot of it is just that "Marketing") because some adult foods will work if in these proper reference ranges that I previously listed. Also, the inverse is true for kitten foods as some adult and senior diets will meet their specific requirements. And, finally the mineral profile is the most important thing in cat's in general so your Calcium, Phosphorus and Ca:P is what you need to hyperfocus on.

Even if only 10% of cat food is as fresh as this, you drastically reduce disease. Bravo! Personally, as a hybrid raw/fresh/wet feeder, I don't feed my cats kibble due to the carbs & carcinogenic heating process used to make kibble. Also, careful with too much bone, 10% of the batch weight is the balanced amount. Too much causes constipation. Thanks for the canning tutorial also. Best way to store it, rather than plastic which leaches chemicals into the food. Beef gelatin powder has great benefits to prevent arthritis in cats but also gives the food a pate consistency. ❤ 🐈 ❤

Hi Joanna: A few observations -- all positive. 1. You have a beautiful kitchen. 2. Your kitchen is the size of my NYC apartment (lol). You are so fortunate. 3. I am sure you have been doing this canning for your cats for years. 4. I am also sure you have made every mistake in the book. 5. You are an excellent teacher and thus you have passed on all the reasons to not make the same mistakes. 6. Your effort to keep your cats healthy has (I am sure) saved you a bundle in vet fees 7. What else can I say? This is a PERFECT tutorial and I will strive to emulate you on a much smaller basis. My future cats will be very happy. Thank you so so much for sharing all your knowledge. Cat food is super expensive and I’m not impressed with how it’s made. I’m excited to try this as I have much of what is needed to do so. The last recipe I saw required a bone pulverizer that was around $600-$700. (It was a raw food diet)

PLEASE DON"T LEAVE FOOD IN THE CANNER OVERNIGHT. No, it's not safe to leave food in a pressure canner overnight because the cooling process should not be delayed after processing. The cooling process is important for killing bacteria and ensuring the food is safely canned. If the food is left in the canner, it can slow down the cooling process and allow thermophilic bacteria to grow. This can lead to flat sour spoilage, which can make the food unsafe to eat

I like the food that was made for kitties, but all that canning is way too much trouble in my mind. I have a wonderful vacuum sealer - make a bunch of bags (seal one side of the bag material), add a cup or two of the cat food to a bag and on mine (not sure all vacuum sealers have this) has "wet" and a "pulse" vacuum so I can manually press a button to remove most of the air out without sucking out any of the "wet food" prior to sealing the top. Slap a printed sticker that it is cat food along with the date and then stack the vacuum bags in the freezer. All you have to do is get one or two out at a time, put them in the fridge to thaw and you have your home made food without all the canning. Just my own suggestion, of course.

Just ran across this video. I have been making my black Lab pup every meal he's ever eaten homemade. He wouldn't know what a kibble was. I feed a few feral cats outside. I live rural. Point is, I feel really good about cooking for them. It's a lot of work and it is a commitment but it so worth it!

      @grassrootstexas 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@araeapryal6174 I make a different variant every time. I only wish I had ample access to rabbit and duck! She would probably adore that! Mine is fairly simple. Chicken, or turkey, sometimes ground beef, rice, broccoli, and/or, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, in that wonderful chicken stock. Just anything that is not dangerous for her to consume, (ie., garlic, onions... ). Its pretty simple really. I make about 8 quarts every 4 days. I have 5 strays, 4 kittens, all that seem to live on my property lol. Might be the food right? I'm a softy to their hungry little stares when I go outside. 😢. I live by a very large lake and it seems to be the drop off point of unwanted pets. 😢 But yeah, recipe is simple and human grade.

I’m old. Coconut oil not in my family history. We raised a hog for butchering every year on our family homestead. The best fat for us was lard rendered from the hog, organically raised before anyone labeled it that. Any reason to avoid substituting lard for the coconut oil?

    • @JoannaTrautman
      @JoannaTrautman  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Your comment made me smile. Living in rural Appalachia for the last few years, I do, in fact, have a pretty decent understanding of what you are talking about. What you can purchase in the grocery store is a far cry from the lard you were raised cooking with. I use coconut oil as it is available to me, and has a triglyceride structure I can get behind. That being said, if I were fully homesteading, including raising and butchering livestock like pigs or beef, I would absolutely render and utilize that fat for all sorts of things, cooking, soap, and candles included. I've found single ingredient plant-based products are closer to what they say they are, especially if they are specialty. It's hard to mix in cheap oil to coconut oil - even refined, coconut oil has specific properties that make it solid at most room temperatures and melt rapidly at anything above, unlike butter and most other vegetable fats. I'm not sure if I answered your question, but I hope my comments give you insight into my reasoning! Cheers, Joanna

Thanks for sharing this video. I think you're on to something in a variety of ways.
One huge thing is trust. Trust in what you feed your pet. Food quality and safety.
I knew people years ago whose cats were poisoned and died because the (USA and canada) store bought cat food they'd trusted for years had switched to using ingredients from China (or was now manufactured in China) and one or more ingredients had been doctored with some sort of plastic or chemical so it would pass some protein test or something.
I recall feeling fearful of owning a cat or a dog again because I believed the propaganda that only store bought food is "safe" for pets. I thought I wouldn't be able to feed the cat or dog an appropriate, safe diet. Videos like yours are vital.
I've had to rent for years, unfortunately, and every landlord has had a strict _no pets_ policy. I've also been struggling financially for a long time, so I can't afford vet care, litter, toys, etc for a cat. But, if I'm ever blessed with a cat in my life again, I'm going to make the cat's food. I've saved this video on a couple of my playlists. Thank you.

I’ve not blended meat or used the bones (great idea to do so) bc I shred the chicken then use bone broth. and alternately use chopped beef, chicken livers, organ meats, turkey, salmon as well as plain pumpkin and green peas, apple also and eggs I boil and chop. Always serve with a drizzle of coconut oil. Chefs love to chop, lol- it’s a meditative thing and drizzle!) Mine seem to enjoy the variety and textures. I put special kitty two cans and then 16 oz home make plus the broth with water over the top. I have reduced the amount of oz I feed and the cats seem to be good. My reduction in cost per month is $250.00. and my vet bills have now reduced with the skin allergy, IBD. Instant pot won't allow you to open whilst pressurised. The safety features lock the lid. Also L00:00 stands for lapsed time (time since cooking ended). You do not need to switch off keep warm or pressure cancel, keep warm does not kick in until it has completely depressurised. Also you only need 1/2 cup water max for pressure cooking.

While you may be correct on the features and instructions of the pressure cooker;i was using a pressure cooker a few yrs ago and my father, who has a doctorate in law was visiting me. When I told him that I was using a pressure cooker all the time to cook beans, he immediately told me to throw the cooker away- what he said was pressure cookers are extremely dangerous and there have been thousands of lawsuits that companies have hidden from the public of people being severely injured or even unalived by pressure cookers. After this knowledge I wouldn't trust even a hi tech insta pot. Her ensuring the pressure has left the cooker before opening seems fairly intelligent. And would potentially negate any risk of injury if say perhaps if the off mechanism did not work properly or was defective.

Thank you so much for this recipe! My vet said my cat would need a special diet from Hill's science that we couldn't afford but this recipe will save us so much and we can add the DL-Methionine for pennies which is the only noteworthy ingredient in the Hill's prescription food that costs over $120 for a disappointing small bag.
The Hills C/D uses really questionable ingredients (corn as main ingredient??) for such a high dollar brand like corn and mystery chicken by product. Remember, the FDA said that pet food can be produced from animals that are diseased, dead and decomposing. Seriously look it up it's true and look up how the euthanasia drug is often found in pet foods so think about that how is that getting in there? It has been reported on Mutiple occasions that rendering plans use animals shelters as one of their sources for meat product. Rendering plans are black box. Hill's science has repeated instances of shady behavior, yet they market themselves as this science backed brand, yet all the "science" comes from them directly from researchers they employ. Just look up Hill's Vitamin D crisis, the copper false research paper that was redacted after the science was questioned for lack of honesty, and as recent as this year they're getting sued for fabricating the grain free scare which the FDA has debunked after investigating but not before it crashed the rising popularity that new grain free and independent brands started to build. Surprisingly, Hill's science started the rumor in the first place, and they are the ones who got the FDA to investigate grain free diets. Hill's science specifically got the FDA to investigate only grain free, independent, designer brands that shockingly encompassed everyone but themselves, Hill's claims the cost of the product and the need for prescription (which is absurd there's no reason) comes from the massive amount of money they invest in research to make their food the best and they have to cover that cost in the product. Maybe consumers should get a refund for this science they paid for if some of it was junk.
So, we were not excited about our vet wanting us to use a brand that deals in pseudo-science lies and doesn't care about killing pets (look up how they delayed product recall causing hundred if not thousands of pet deaths and costs an absurd amount of money. All while we are barely able to keep the electricity on and the Morgage paid. I was looking through all the options and couldn't find something cheaper. Looking up homemade and raw food led me to TH-cam channels promoting raw food delivery (that would cost about the same as my grocery bill!) or a well-meaning pet lover who show how to make a recipe that costs $10 a meal because it's made with only organic products, fresh meat from a butcher, local goat-milk, and a list of expensive supplements.
Thank you for realizing the need people have for cheaper options and making this video! I stumbled across it and I am so glad I found it!

People seem very confused about what the term 'obligate carnivore' means. It doesn't mean they can ONLY eat meat. It means that they need meat to get all their nutrients. They can eat a diet free of grains and still meet their nutrient requirements. But carbohydrate sources are a good source of essential nutrients that aren't present in high in amounts in animal products. Grains are the best source compared to other products like potatoes or peas that are less nutrient-dense.
Legumes and pulses have also been associated with a fatal heart disease in dogs and cats. It is also a rich source of fiber which also isn't considered an essential nutrient but provides many benefits. So no, while it isn't necessary, it is best to feed a diet that is inclusive of grains. Here are resources from board-certified veterinary nutritionists and FEDIAF (Europe's pet food safety organization): - vetnutrition.tufts.edu/2021/07/the-role-of-carbohydrate-in-pet-foods/ - europeanpetfood.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/FEDIAF_Carbohydrates-OnlineK.pdf

I appreciate so much you explaining how to work with a pressure cooker. I've never had one and I want to begin canning. Any canning I've done has always been by water bath. I haven't canned for years and now they say a lot of what I want to can needs to be pressure cooked, and I've been intimidated by them. So for you to explain so thoroughly is extremely helpful. Thank you so much. Plus I'm about to bring 5 previously feral cats into my house, so knowing how to make the cat food & what all goes into it & why is also extremely helpful. So thank you so much for making such a thorough presentation.

I hope it turned out well - this cat food is the most frustrating food I pressure can. If you find a bunch of your jars didn't seal, I would empty the unsealed jars back into the stock pot, add water so you have a more liquid consistency, and then pressure can again. Heaven knows I've had to do that. I agree on your dog enjoying it. I call it "sauce" or "gravy" for my dogs, and they absolutely snarf everything it touches. Best of success, Joanna

@coredadveture1 have you ever tried baby food like Gerber or Beech Nut-brands? Chicken + chicken broth, turkey + turkey broth, beef + beef broth, and ham + ham broth. Each of the four types mentioned above, comes in a 2.5 oz (71 g) glass jar and there are no other ingredients. I have been feeding this to my cats for over 27 years as a (supplemental treat food only.) My 19 year old female Ragdoll developed mouth cancer at the palate oral cavity. This food was an absolute Godsend for her- as she did not want to be put down! Plus her veterinarian said she was not in any pain so I decided too let her tell me when she was ready to be put down. One late morning 6 1/2 months later she was finally ready to go so I put her in my arms as I always have and into the car we went straight to her vets office. As I held her in my arms just like you would hold a baby she went to sleep. It was so peaceful and beautiful 😇. I truly didn’t even realize that she had passed away until they told me minutes later. Please note: I did not keep her just on the baby food only. I also brought a big 32 ounce bottle of liquid multivitamin for dogs and a 16 ounce bottle of the best omega-3 fish oil I could find at the time. Also I bought the (“Now” brand Taurine pure powder 8 ounce bottle made in America then), but I’m pretty sure it’s all made now in China, which is ok, Don’t sweat that. Plus a human probiotic capsule that is divided into four servings. There was not a lot of information to go on back then for Cats so I had to improvise! I took a whole chicken and steamed it for a few minutes,
enough to where I could separates the meat from the bones. After it cooled, I separated the meat from the bones. Then I put the bones into a pressure cooker-for over an hour and a half, till the bones disintegrated between my fingers! (Like mush.) This step is very important!-as well as incorporating the Oregon meat, like the chicken hearts, gizzards and liver at the same time you cook the chicken meat. Must incorporate that as well. Then grind all ingredients together and serve 😻. I truly wish you and your fur baby all the best there is. If there’s anything I can add-please ask and I’ll keep checking back here. Promise 😍🥰

Great recipe for the cooked portion of a cats diet.
I feed my cat 75% raw and 25 % processed.
The processed portion is wet food and dry biscuits ( kibble).
I will try your recipe as a healthy replacement for the wet food.
The oldest and healthiest cats are the ones who have been fed a mostly raw diet.
Raw is best as ( firstly it is NATURAL and how they eat in the wild) and secondly no nutrients have been lost in the cooking process - thirdly, the animal is able to receive all the live enzymes that are readily available in raw meats.
Cats are fussy creatures by nature so i do incorporate some cooked wet food to mix it up but my intention is to always stick to the 75% raw Rule.
This way your cat will ALWAYS be the best they can be.
Their teeth, joints coat and organs remain in tip top condition and the lifespan is well into their 20s.

    • @JoannaTrautman
      @JoannaTrautman  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@tagpopper4520 great question! Yes, after they are either slow cooked extensively or pressure cooked, enough of the minerals have leached into the cooking liquid (why we don’t throw any of it away) that the bones are brittle enough to crush in the Vitamix. If your food processor doesn’t handle them well first try adding more liquid, then if it still doesn’t work, simply pick the bones out. Hope that helps, Joanna
