    I'd say that advertising works mostly through the mere exposure effect.
    One question tho.
    Is there a psycological described feeling of over exposure?
    Becasue oftentimes when I see a brand name for wich the advertisement is frequent and annoying I avoid buying that brand..

      In my personal case, I am kind of down your guys' street. I say kind of being that if it's something I wasn't particularly interested in, or something I consider an unnecessary luxury for example, I'll react the way you're describing. Example Dr. Dre beats headphone or and Iphone. Perhaps I'd end up purchasing those at some point in my life, weren't their add campaigns that much (!) aggressive.
      On the other hand, I could definitely live without a head massager. However I did (initially) find it potentially useful and interesting. So after seeing a good deal of adds for it, while still aware it's overpraised and overrated, I'm more prone to actually purchase it than before.
      I guess it's the predisposition thing the girl spoke of in the video. :)

    • @ricisebastiano
      @ricisebastiano 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Overexposure is ineffective and it has been proven through research. Mere exposure functions over longer periods of time, but still - current academic understanding indicates that it's simply not worth it if you don't have the necessary scale.
      We don't only buy national and international brands so it's more about managing good customer relationships, offering satisfying services and simply having a good and valuable (esp. perceived value) product.
      If the product is utter shite, no amount of sugaring will make its use more appealing.

    What about images instead of words? The brain reconizes images way faster then words and can have an effect on people before they are conciously aware of what they're looking at.

    • @ricisebastiano
      @ricisebastiano 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      StaticR We experience more relevant priming through images at every point in our day. Exemplified with ice cream (although dependent on individual), you're more likely to buy it:
      you have a craving> a person you like suggests it> you see a person you like eating it> you watch a video of someone enjoying it that is not an ad> you see a video ad> you see an image ad> you read an ad> you are shown subliminal images of ice cream.
      You literally forget what you consciously and actively want to do sometimes as soon as you walk through a door. A subliminal message would disappear as soon as it's sent and with it the purchase intent. It is why visual availability nudges work ONLY when you make the decision (buying the candy that is obviously tempting you by the queue). Of course it may be possible that seeing more candy stores that day might prime you into actually buying candy. But factors like your diet, your mom's reaction, your religious belief, your natural needs and cravings and the situational availability of funds and actually being in a shop that sells candy will be what makes the purchase happen.
      Simply put, if you used subliminal messaging, you'd be outcompeted by everything else in changing consumer behaviour.

    Something Interesting that happened while watching.
    I was thinking all day I should drink some water and then when she said “thirst quenching” I proceeded to get a bottle of water from my fridge. I sat down and had a sip amd heard “these messages can take you to something you were already thinking of” and it dawned on me that subliminal messages might not be as sneaky as you might think they are.

      There is a phenomenon called the mere-exposure effect. It's what justifies sponsorship spend by corporations like McDonalds or CocaCola at mega events.
      It is used to create and strengthen associations and has sufficient effects in building that 'familiarity' that is necessary for having an emotional impact on consumers in later stages.
      It is also effective when consumers are faced with a foreign decisions (like buying washing detergent for the first time).
      But that is superliminal. As she said, we can consciously notice it.
      If the same type of mere-exposure would be employed with subliminal messages, then it would be possibly the weakest moderator of consumer behaviour IF it would not be equivalent to a statistical fluke.

    It works and that’s why they keep saying it doesn’t. We generally do not make laws or policies against things that are inconsequential. In the article that linked this video it’s mentioned that advertising groups were involved in policy making and usage of subliminal advertising. I’m sure they were completely impartial and forthright with their findings.

    Subliminals will never wok in marketing because there are too many variables and buyiing the product is not one.
    It's not easy to impress your subconciousness, if that was the case, we would all be millionaires just by listening to wealth subliminals. It does affect us, but not in the way its 'supposed' to. Subliminals stays with you for a very short period of time, science says about 10-15min and you cant do much in 10 minutes, on the other hand, if you listen to it consistently, it should show impressive results but the problem is when you start listening to it consistenly on purpose, you become very aware of what you're doing and that alone will block you from impressing your subconscious mind, though there are ways but 10sec ad, no, dont be afraid of that, subliminal marketing ads wont affect you at all.

    I get more annoyed with commercials entirely about leading your actual experiences- say, a soda commercial that goes on about how your mouth is so dry, so thirsty, so parched, why aren't you drinking anything? Don't you realize how thirsty you are, how your mouth must be like cotton right now? Should probably buy our product, unless you hate yourself. It's less of an advertisement and more of an attempt to argue 2+2=5, or even some manner of a protection racket. It's annoying when you are thirsty, because it makes it worse, but is insufferable when you're not thirsty. Hell, if you're not sure if you are thirsty or not, it's meant to take you off the fence in the same way you don't question little Timmy's safety at his friend's house until a scaremongering film goes out of its way to show all the horrible things that could happen if you take your eyes off Timmy for one second. I guess you could actually call it "thirstmongering" or "hungermongering." You're not you when you're hungry, right?

    We are visual creatures. We take in 100 percent of both audio and visuals. Now their brain stores all info and we can retrieve when needed. So yes it works. Now we also know Hypnosis only works on certain individuals and maybe this is also true about subliminal. However, why do they have advertisements and icons? Because people remember these and they are etched into the mind. So if this is why they are used then the other is also true.. Now she makes a statement about if we are already addicted to lets say water or alcohol then maybe a ice cube with death or being in prison then maybe the user will be imprisoned to use spirits. By the way they use the word spirits because they believed in a magic of how distillation is used. So some believe that spirits are conjured up or consumed when they are consumed... Not what I believe but what others believe. However, that doesn't make it untrue.
