    I just started my second year of college and realized that even though I had enough financial aid, anything can happen, you know? So I realized that canvas is really expensive, even the very large and extremely small sizes. So I watched this video and took all the paintings I didn't need or wanted to keep and repainted them with the white gesso for repurpose. I also painted them Venetian Red because it adds a lot of heat and increased activity in a very simple painting. Thanks for the video! And good luck in your endeavors!

      Ah yes... Art college. I spent WAY too much on my art education, so I'm glad we were able to save you some money!

    Gesso isn’t appropriate for painting over oil paint btw. Just use titanium white paint out of the tube or slightly thinned with solvent. Sanding off the varnish and texture first is a good idea.

    What do you think of the dangers of paint particles when sanding old canvases? I don't use cadnium paints but if I sand outside with a mask is it ok?

    Longterm wise does having multiple layers on top of each other hinder it's appearance in quality with added weight (canvas, gesso, old base layer, gesso, new base layer)? Also, what grit sandpaper did you use?

      Hi Molly! You can indeed use oil paints on top of acrylic gesso. However, you cannot use acrylic paint on oil primed canvas.

    Can you use Gesso on a canvas that has an old print on it that wasn't painted? If that makes sense, like something that was bought from a decorative store and is now outdated. I have one that that I just don't like anymore and it is a decent size, so before I decide to get rid of it, it would be awesome if I could paint over it. Thanks!

    I have a question maybe if you see this or somebody in the comments section could answer. I just came across a very old acrylic painting I did maybe 30 years ago. I have not done Acrylics for a very long time. I would like to do a restoration of just the mountains. I didn't know Bob Ross back then. :O) LOLOL Do you think I can do just the mountains by carefully covering them with Gesso. I like the rest of the painting just the way it is. Can you or someone help me out with this. I'm thinking there used to be a clear Gesso to seal the paintings. If I am right could I do the entire painting with the clear and re paint just the mountains?

    I have an old painting that is 4X7 ft approximately. How can I sand it or apply gesso evenly if the surface is so big?

    • @LastingImpressionArt
      @LastingImpressionArt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My recommendation is to use a large brush and foam sanding block. Using a cross pattern when brushing on the gesso and sanding should also help.

    Can you use Gesso over an old Oil Painting? Or just Acrylic?

    • @LastingImpressionArt
      @LastingImpressionArt  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TMB247 It is generally recommended that you only gesso over acrylic unless you are doing a practice painting. Gesso over oil has a chance not to adhere and the painting may break down over time.

      You can use an oil based gesso. Oil gesso is hard to find because only top artists use it.

    • @2broger
      @2broger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LastingImpressionArt yeah, I made the mistake of covering old oil painting with gesso. About half way through a portrait in oil with live model the oil paint stopped adhering to the canvas in certain places. So, I learned the hard way. Back to the drawing board! as they say.

    I've seen sandpaper used on canvas before and it left me a bit intimidated, to be honest. Is it really safe to use it like that or won't it leave a nasty texture, even possibly LIFT the applied Gesso off? Oh, and I was wondering about one last thing about the sanding method: Is it okay to use a sanding block instead of sandpaper if that's all you have?

    • @LastingImpressionArt
      @LastingImpressionArt  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TsukiyoTenshi Not only is it safe, but sometimes it's even necessary to sand the gesso if there are any lumps or if you desire a smooth finish and do not plan on using a lot of paint. If you are intimidated, I would recommend applying light pressure as you sand and make sure you are not using too course of a grit. A sanding block should be fine, but I would take extra care around the stretcher bars so you do not sand too much.

    I'm new to painting. What is Gesso? I was going to recycle a canvas. What would be the result if I just painted over it with a layer of black paint? (the picture I am painting has a black background)

    • @LastingImpressionArt
      @LastingImpressionArt  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gesso is a white paint mixture that typically contains a gypsum chalk. This not only primes the canvas for the paint, but it's also a great way to quickly cover old work as demonstrated in the video. Most pre-stretched canvases you find at art store come with gesso already applied.

    • @elliemerc01
      @elliemerc01 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gesso comes in white, black, gray and other colors. It is a chalk based liquid that you can use to cover up painted canvasses and reuse them again for another painting. When you Gesso a canvas, do not forget to get sandpaper it with very the lightest sandpaper you can get. Hope this helps.
