O M G , Girl ... I SOOOOO miss You!!! I was just getting started in paper crafting when I found you, and your vids are S U C H a wealth of info!! I sincerely hope you just decided to bow out, and that there's nothing seriously wrong in your life. Blessing, dear Lady, at these holidays, and for always!!
I bought some gesso last week and watched several (not particularly helpful) videos today on how to use it before coming across yours. Absolutely superb and a lovely lady to boot! Thank you.
This is great - clear and precise without any 'la de dar' language or banter. I do agree with a previous comment about the big brush handle being in the road of the demo. Apart from that you did a great job. Thank you. Maree
You, Madam, ROCK :) That was the best explanation about Gesso I have ever heard from many "experts" who seem unable to digress to my childlike bewilderment. Fantastic teaching and you have a new student. Take good care.
Awesome video!! I'm a beginner with acrylic painting and I do use gesso, but now you've given me many ideas on alternative uses and surfaces while I'm at home sheltering in place. I have a lot of card stock, so now I have more options if I run out of my canvas boards and hardboard. I really, REALLY love your demonstration with the stencil. SO COOL. I may have stencils, but if not I'll attempt to make some!! Thanks for such a wonderful video. I am now subscribed. :-)
I just used Gesso for the first time on a project and put it on too heavily. I learned there are several kinds available (mine was borrowed) and that it even comes in black. Very cool.
Thanks to you, I recently used gesso on some stencils... but then the gesso I got was not very thick (cheap brand). I found that adding little flour makes it thick, and it worked perfect. So now I can actually shape what I'm painting (such as a river and a wolf).
THANKS! I’ve watched several vids trying to find out what gesso actually is, not just ways to use it. You’re explanation is by far the most comprehensive and most importantly, most coherent! I don’t know if it’s because some artists just finds it so exciting or what but many of the presenters talked too fast and were just almost incoherent in their attempts to say so much! The end results were word salads that were flung against a wall.
Jenny, I watch a lot of videos and I have been noticing lately on all the crafty you tube videos that there are dislike thumbs. I know it is the watchers prerogative to vote that way but it seems too much like a blatant attempt to discredit the person taking their time to post a video. I love your videos and this is another great one. I don't know if you or if You Tube can see if it is a thumbs down campaign by the same person. Just thought I would let you know that this is a great video. Thank you!
+pesto12601 i agree. The thumbs up tells the person doing the demo that this is what they want to see. Likewise they have an equal right to say 'no thanks, not keen on that,. It's not a personal slur, just an honest opinion and they will then know if they are giving the viewers what they want and that's how to keep the subs. You're not being spiteful, just honest.
I agree there is no reason to put a thumbs done on anyone's site! If you don't like that you tube site than there are hundreds others to watch. I am so grateful for her sharing her knowledge with us. I can guarantee you don't like when others criticize you. Just remember this is free ideas and knowledge. Our world has enough negativity in it! Thank you for sharing your amazing ideas they are greatly appreciated.
You have become an official victim observer of the American hateful 'I know more than you' population whose ranks swell daily as the size of empty heads increase. In 1,000 years or so, archaeologists will spend hours trying to decide which alien race produced such large but empty craniums.
When I use the thumbs down it is my way of saying that the presentation needs better organization or better focus, maybe more skill in recording. I rarely use the thumbs down. Most.often I use the thumbs up to say it was great content presented in an organized creative enthused interesting timely manner with good video recording skill and do nothing if I do not care for the video. I am more likely to give constructive comment/ feedback explaining what I feel is right and what the presenter can improve to be better which is more useful than a thumbs down. If I give a thumbs down on a comment it is to say it is too negative, itrelevant, or too crass to be useful to presenters and discussion.

I have a bucket of Masters Touch Gesso. I used it one time and as I remember it was thin. I went to use it again and when I opened it there was a film of butterscotch on the top so I scraped it off but then realized that the gesso is pretty thick. Would I be better off just tossing it and getting a new one or using it? That worries me because if it has turned bad I will not be happy I'm sure for the way it's covering. Also I had heavy gesso and put that on my canvas with fabric and made it bumpy. I don't care for it so how do I remove that lumpy gesso? I did try sanding to no avail. Thanking you ahead as well as I enjoyed your video so very much.
Benny CFD Adding water to the pre-mixed Gesso may weaken adhesion. To thin without weakening the adhesion mixing an adhesive or acrylic paint makes more sense. It is what I do to thin my gesso without losing adhesion.
B. E. Marshall Campbell great tip, this should be pinned at the top. From years of cooking and painting with watercolor I reach for water by habit for adjustments. That’s a great reminder. Tfs
Regarding the tag you did with the fern design, what if you did that on wood instead of paper and then painted over it. Do you think the gesso would chip off in time or stay put?
I am so glad you explained what it was used for I was trying to figure out if I needed to use it on my rock painting but I love texture so this is an awesome thing :) btw I couldn't find the FB page (says: The link you followed may have expired, or the page may only be visible to an audience you're not in.) sigh
Greetings from UK, I can't stop looking into your beautiful deep blue eyes😁 how has TH-cam's algorithms only just suggested your videos? They're great, I like the thick gesso wth the stencils also the black gesso looks great for astronomy art?
Big box craft stores have an "art supply" section to get the gesso. You can find many great stencils in the craft area, like where the keep the paints. Tags are there, too!
I've bought the thinner gesso how can I make it thick like the second one ? If there's a way to do that will it effect the quality of the painting? And thank you for your videos
Hi Jenny , love the tutorial on this gesso . question where did u get that feather stencil at or what company is it from . ty have a very bless an crafty day 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Is gesso automatically used on all surfaces,.cardboard, wood, canvas, etc. Is it used with various types of medium, water color, ink, acrylics, oil, etc. It would be great if I had a list odes and don't s. Right now I'm at a work stoppage as I don't know how to start. Thank you.
the vid is great ty.. ok.. so I've been painting backs of metal bottle caps and the paint tends to scratch off very quickly, would gesso solve this problem. really need a solution
Jody, yes you can and you should if you plan to put paint (acrylic, or oil) on the wood. Otherwise the paint will sink into the wood or chip off and your painting is a goner before you know it.
Please, I ordered Talens clear Gesso, for my first attempt to use it on paper (for drawing with Polychromos). Unfortunately, I was told that it's thick and rough gesso, that works only for painting on large canvases and won't work for pencil drawing. Is there any trick, to make it work for my needs? Maybe thin it out with water and put less amount, as also choosing a very smooth paper, could that make it work?
It is water-soluble but I don’t know why you would want to mix gesso and chalk paint. Chalk paint is a literally the same ingredients as gesso! Just a different consistency and without the pigment.
Thank you for showing me how gesso works. BTW, I was pronouncing it as guesso not jess-oh. Anyway, I can now go ahead and use it on my paper mache which is rather lumpy in lots of places. It's the first time I've done paper mache (I'm in my 60's, shh, don't tell anyone). Thank you for explaining, a great lesson. Mine is by a company called "Boldmere" and comes in a plastic jar. I have subscribed. ☕🍰
Thanks for the tips, really enjoyed your peppy video :) I love the sound of working with the black gesso, but I work on large paintings. If you wanted to sculpt a primer thickly onto a sheet of 8 ft x 4 ft board, what would you use for that? Probably go through dozens of 8 oz jars, too expensive! Cheers, James.
Hi Craft dummies!!! Question! How do you clean the brushes etc?! Gypsum may clog plumbing?!! Thankyou!! Wondering where to order from if not carried in my store!!!! 👍👍
It's a soap and water clean-up...and the amount of gypsum is so small it shouldn't be a problem. You can find gesso at any big box art or craft store in the fine art section or online.
you are very positively cheerful! Loved your presentation. Thanks for the video.
You are a great explained on products!!! Thankyou!

Thanks so much fore sharing all of those great ways to use Gesso. 😀
Thank you, that was very helpful and inspirational

LOVE the stencil idea!
Thanks for your advise...I learn alot
Thank you that was informative and very clear on what gesso is
I love the stencil technique. Thanks for your great ideas. I am new to you and I'm glad I found you.
Texture paste works for that technique as well.
Thanks to you, I recently used gesso on some stencils... but then the gesso I got was not very thick (cheap brand). I found that adding little flour makes it thick, and it worked perfect. So now I can actually shape what I'm painting (such as a river and a wolf).

Great tips. Can I use watercolor over gesso on canvas?
I made my own and all of the things you said about it happened with different formulas. But Thankyou for the explanation of what they are used for.

Thanks for this video. Very helpful!
Good to know. Thanks😀👍
thank you like the stencil one...
I guess I need to play with my gesso. Thanks for this great video!
Should you prime a album with gesso before paint pouring.

Or white gesso and black acrylic. Im going to make grey gesso soon. I want an antique look.
Where can I buy gesso like your, stencils and tags? I am a beginner. Thanks

thank you for sharing , very informative and inspiring to use more gesso :)
Thank you for the good information about Gesso.
Very helpful. Thanks so much
Will thin gesso crack on a semi limber surface like a guitar case top?
I love your video it was very educational. The only thing I would recommend is to move the paint brush out of the way.
this is soo helpful 👍😊 thank you💕
Love the idea of reusing junk mail by brushing gesso on it to prime for future use.
Thank you Crafty Girl, that's valueable info...
Thank you so much
Do you have a link for the thicker gesso?
Super demonstration and great 👍 ideas! I am subscribing to your channel. I enjoyed this video. To be honest I’m quite an art dummy! 😂😂😂
I just get in to your Chanel, love the way you sharing with us thanks!
Thanks and welcome!!!
Hello, can gesso be used also as a primer for glass bottles? Thanks
I've bought the thinner gesso how can I make it thick like the second one ? If there's a way to do that will it effect the quality of the painting? And thank you for your videos
Very informative video. After you used the gesso with the stencil you said you could use water colors or spray mist. Can you also use acrylic paints?
Yes, if you thin it down a bit.
Didn't Bob Ross come out with white, black and grey gesso years ago?
I've been using it since I duscovered it in 1997!
Yes, he invented them.
thanks for the video! how about transparent gesso? can the white gesso be tinted?
Transparent has a little haze.... and white can be tinted. I do it all the time with my spray inks/dyes.
Thank you so much , you so nice
Thank you. Super 👌 👍
if it is too thick, is it ok to dilute it with some water to make it easier to spread over a big size canvas?
Hi Jenny , love the tutorial on this gesso . question where did u get that feather stencil at or what company is it from . ty have a very bless an crafty day 😊😊😊😊😊😊

Thanks for sharing. I'm just learning about gesso. I want to introduce this to my decoupage crafts. Have you ever tried to make it? Curious.
How can I make a diy powder gesso that I can add water to, when I need it. 👏👏👏
the vid is great ty.. ok.. so I've been painting backs of metal bottle caps and the paint tends to scratch off very quickly, would gesso solve this problem. really need a solution
Not really. You need a multi surface paint that will stick to the metal. Folk art makes a good one.
thank you... I just bought some primer, wish me luck
Can Gesso be applied over wood? And can you paint over it?
