Hello! Great video much better than using paint brush to apply gesso. I assume you reuse the foam brushes? How do you clean the gesso from the foam applicator?
I do clean the foam applicators Mrs. D. First I blot out all the paint I can with paper towels. Then, I have a 3 lb coffee tin filled half full of water. I rinse the applicators in those best I can, then rinse outside with a hose. They come out like new!

I do my first cleaning in a coffee can to get most of the paint out. Then I finish cleaning them outside with a waterhose and sometimes soap. They are definitely reusable, and no need to buy new ones. Thank you for your question.

That is a great question Planet! Others have hopped in to answer your question and they are all correct. Gesso is like a white acrylic paint, only thinner. It dries pretty hard so it makes a canvas stiffer. It has more of a grain feel to it than acrylic, so paint sticks easier. Hi Jana, you will love this technique for quick and easy! Healing is slow. Went in today and all is coming along well so far. 2 more weeks and I get into a shoe! Yay!!!
I used that technique and brushes also for years, I will do a video also to share with my viewers, it's great to be able to share your experience and ideas with new artists, I wish I knew all this when I first started. Keep up the great videos, they are very helpful.
Hey Allison, nice to see you again! Sharing with your viewers is a wonderful thing as there is sooo much to learn in the art world. Please remember to mention my channe when making your videol. You do a great job of teaching acrylics! Thanks for liking this video and thank you for posting.
I love your teaching videos, Yovette. No matter how long someone has been painting, there is always room for improvement to fine tune one's skills, that is why I love watching you, Love, Holly Rose Lawrence.
Oh my gosh Holly Rose, I don't think I have heard from you before, but you are so right, no matter how much we know, we need to find more. I think that is the life of an artist, always seeking more knowledge, we never learn enough! So happy you enjoy my videos, and thank you for sharing that.
Yovette, I just painted along with your Fall Reflections. A wonderful tutorial! I learned so much in 52 minutes. You make excellent points on mixing paints, and the correct loading of brushes and the palette knife. These are critical to applying paint correctly to the canvas! Thank you for being a patient teacher!
Fall reflections was fun, wasn't it Sam? It's one of the paintings that is not too difficult. I did a followup on it and changed it a bit, and I liked it better. Anyway, it is wonderful for a teacher to hear comments like yours. Thank you for watching and painting along.

Great decision Wayfinding! You will love this little trick especially if you are doing multiple canvas at a time. It will save you time and cleanup, and that is valuable! Thank you for watching.
Love the pad. Used the foam brushes for years. Always a FAVORITE. I m a sign painter & think the pad idea will be so good for my smaller sign backgrounds. Great idea!!
Wonderful Heavencreed! That edger is one of the handiest hints I know of. It has saved me hours of time. And as a lefty, welcome, and I hope you find more helpful things.
Gosh that was such a nice compliment Jannell! Thank you , and you will love this tip for your art room. Leaves canvas nice and smooth. Happy that you watched the video.
That's for the tip. I'll be most thankful to have a another tip,how to clean the bas of a small and big brush. I try's many good cleansers and even in a new brushes they didn't remove all the paint from them. THANKS for your Tim.
When I use oil paint, I use odorless thinner. I have 3 cleaning containers. The 1st container gets most of the paint out. The 2nd container cleans the brushes even more. The 3rd container is the one that gets the brushes really clean. I have a wire cleaner rack in the bottom of my containers to swish the brushes around. Then I hang the brushes upside down, handle up to dry. Hoping that helps you. ***** Kada koristim uljne boje, koristim razrjeđivač bez mirisa.
What a revelation ! I am painting for 10 years and never came across the use of these sponge brushes. Thank you for sharing !!! I will definitely get some !
I keep learning new things all the time too Claudie! And it's so nice I can just pass it on to my viewers. Glad you liked the ideas, and thank you for watching.
Thanks, I've tried many tools in applying he's gesso on my canvases as well as various watercolor and mixed media papers, I never would have thought of using that flat house paint sponge thing!!!
I always used a Japanese spatula (or a soft, bendable, plastic one). I just pour gesso (I have mine in a bottle with a large steel ball bearing in it, so I can shake it like a nail polish) onto the canvas and spread it all over. The best thing is how quickly you rinse off the spatula (if there’s some gesso left, it goes back in the bottle, easy to do using the spatula)!
Thanks so much for the information I will start doing that :) another thing I didn’t know I can combine the gesso with any other color ;) I’m happy to see again thanks and god bless you always have a wonderful weekend 🌹
Hi Angie, great to see you again! Blending a little acrylic color to change a gesso color is great fun! You will love using these tips. Makes painting life easier. Hugs!
I love it! Thank you for sharing your secrects... I'm just getting started with acrilic painting, I'm usually into color pencil ✏ art. But wanted to give this a go. Your paintings a so beautiful and a joy to see. So very talented!
That is a very kind compliment Kerrie, thank you. This tutorial is gesso and acrylic, but basically I am an oil painter. I do very little acrylic. Regardless, this video will help you with adding gesso to a canvas.🌹 Thank you for watching!
That was a very good tip. I never thought about it and I am an old painter. I used the pad technique when I put varnish on my wooden boat and that is so much easier than the brush and this works the same way. Thank you Yovette
Yes very helpful tricks! Thanks for your Very Enjoyable video, as I don't see a need to change anything here at all. Thanks for taking the time to post this, and if certain ones don't like it, they should go elsewhere! Always a critic lurking somewhere.
I appreciate that you also voiced your opinion Mary! I realize not everyone likes the way I teach, but it's OK. There are a lot of people who do like it and they come back! I am here for anyone who likes learning what I have to teach. Wishing you a wonderful day! Thank you.
You’re a genius! I’ve always used the foam brushes to apply my gesso but I’d never thought about using one of those applicator sponge things even though I love using them when we paint the rooms!! Great job thinking outside the box! Keep it coming 👏
The paint pad, (edger) works so great Angela, and such a time saver if you do many canvases at a time. I hope this will come in very handy for you. Thank you for your comment.
This is a tremendously helpful tip! I will definitely check out that wall painting pad next time I go shopping. I do have a bag of assorted sizes of foam brushes but I never thought of using them for applying gesso to smaller canvases or panels. The bonus is that the foam brushes are incredibly inexpensive so I don't feel bad about disposing of them when they crumble.
Dear Yovette, I must say you are a delightful, soft hearted and sweet individual. Furthermore, I love your voice it really is lovely. Back in 2007 I started using kitchen sponges, the ones that have a 90 degree angle on all sides. I usually paint the back ground using this, however one time I painted the whole architectural design on a canvas about 5 foot by something, and I did the whole painting using a kitchen sponge. I know have the fancy sponges but I still use my kitchen sponge, I guess old habits die slow. giggle giggle. I use gesso when I paint over a painting that I do not like, and use the canvas again. I am so glad that you helped others, because I could not, as I have no channel. Big hugs from Queensland Australia. By the way my husband was born in Perth WA and most of his family are still there...Cheers love.
Now that is really a unique idea Deborah! A kitchen sponge on a canvas that large must have taken forever, but I bet it had beautiful texture! It is wonderful to hear that you reuse your canvas. So many people don't realize that you can do this. I do it myself. You live on the opposite side of Australia from Perth. I (we) sure would love to visit there someday while the kids are there. They send photos and it's so gorgeous! Thank you for the very nice compliment on my videos, I really appreciate that. Best always!
@@PaintingWithYovette Dear Yovette, I thought I would let you know exactly where I live. If you google Mount Tamborine Queensland Australia and go to images you will see where we live. This mountain is the aftermath of a volcano millions of years ago, thus it is a rain forest, and very pretty indeed. About a 40 minute drive, only due to traffic is the ocean. Oh by the way I am an abstract artist I use everything and anything I can get my hands on. Doing one at the moment from an angle beneath the earth, using all sorts of things, such as the new glass pieces for the pool filter, because it looks so cool. Plus today I learnt a way to make your won gesso, pretty easy to do, but I cannot be bothered, I will use what I have purchased instead. You have a wonderful and glorious day, I shall see YOU on your next video...hugs
@@deborahgallo6730 The first thing I did yesterday was google your area to see where you lived in relation to Perth. Interesting! And I also looked at images too. Really a beautiful place! It's no wonder I would love to visit. I have never tried an abstract, but maybe someday. Sure a lot of people that love it. Wish you a wonderful day also Deborah!
@@PaintingWithYovette Hi love, well at least I could give you a virtual tour of a part of Australia. If you expanded the image of the mountain, you would come to the ocean, then zoom in and probably see people at the beach. Oh I have another place you can look at on the east coast, a place just down the street in the state of New South Wales, called Byron Bay. Byron is the most easterly point on the east coast, where the light house is. Once I watched the whales moving in a long string from that light house...OhOH and one year when I was swimming way out in the water, all the dolphins came and we all swam together, that was such fun. I just love google maps and what they have done, so we can all look at parts of the world when we want too....It is so much fun. Doing an abstract at the moment but not happy with it...I think I put too much planning into it, should of just gone with the flow. Oh well! I will see what the hubby thinks, if he like it, that is ok. If he does not like it, I will either paint over it, or toss it in the bin. You have a glorious day as well..Big Aussie Hugs

It is just a personal preference of mine to try lots of different products, and some I like better than others so I share that. Thank you for sharing your best kept secret with me. Lots of viewers will see this!
What a soothing voice...!!
I love the way you talk ma'am, such a friendly and comforting way of delivering the message to your viewers.....Thanks for this video, I have just started my journey of painting...

Yes, the pad is a very helpful hint! Tyfs!
Very happy to share iwth you Sandra! You will love using this and the other tips. Thank you for viewing!

Yes, great tip to use the trim pad!
I thought this tip was awesome, and just had to share it Tanya. Glad you liked it. Thank you for watching.
Thank you, Yovette! I have used the gesso brush, and now use the foam brushes. The pad is an excellent additional tool!!❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏
You will love the pad for applying gesso Suki! So quick and easy, and cleanup is fast and easy too.
Love ur idea of gessoingon a larger scale with the flat spreading tool
This is the best idea I had ever seen for using gesso Mehnaz, and especially for big scale projects, so I just had to pass it on to my viewers. Hope it makes your life so much easier! Thanks for watching.

That's for the tip.
I'll be most thankful to have a another tip,how to clean the bas of a small and big brush. I try's many good cleansers and even in a new brushes they didn't remove all the paint from them.
THANKS for your Tim.
Are you using acrylic paint or oil paint?
@@PaintingWithYovette oil paint
When I use oil paint, I use odorless thinner. I have 3 cleaning containers. The 1st container gets most of the paint out. The 2nd container cleans the brushes even more. The 3rd container is the one that gets the brushes really clean. I have a wire cleaner rack in the bottom of my containers to swish the brushes around. Then I hang the brushes upside down, handle up to dry. Hoping that helps you.

Kada koristim uljne boje, koristim razrjeđivač bez mirisa.
THANK very many ♥️

I keep learning new things all the time too Claudie! And it's so nice I can just pass it on to my viewers. Glad you liked the ideas, and thank you for watching.
Thanks, I've tried many tools in applying he's gesso on my canvases as well as various watercolor and mixed media papers, I never would have thought of using that flat house paint sponge thing!!!
This is a handy hint that will really help you Karen! I had used a lot of things before this too, but this is so nice!
Thank you for sharing this technique. 👍🏻
Love to share with artists Honestly! Hope it works well for you.
Thanks for sharing, Yovette. I love that first one!! ❤️️
It should help you a lot with easy gesso's Janice. Glad you liked the first one!
It’s on my list for the next trip to the hardware store :). I have some pretty big canvases that will need grasping ❤️
@@jayelleart Yay, you will be all prepaired. My next video is a gesso one!
This is awesome idea 👍 thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👌👌👌😄
Those were some really handy tips Rinku! Hope they are useful for you!
Thank you for the idea of using the paint pad-thingy. I'm definitely going by Lowe's to pick up some.
I am happy you liked the idea S. Lynne! It sure has made my painting life easier!
Fabulous idea Lotta Troublemaker! Love you channel name!
Really enjoyed your secret about gesso. Great tool to put on the gesso. Thanks
I am happy you liked the tips Scotti, hope I can bring you more good material!
Yes! I just found you and I love the energy I feel from you. I'm going to enjoy learning from you I can tell already! take care
Gosh, I am happy you found me too Sdigiaco! I hope you find more things on my channel that you will enjoy. Thank you for viewing!
love the paint pad for gesso so fast
It is great isn't it Graham! Quick and easy, and clean up is not bad either.
That was a very good tip. I never thought about it and I am an old painter. I used the pad technique when I put varnish on my wooden boat and that is so much easier than the brush and this works the same way. Thank you Yovette
I am an old painter too Christer! LOL. This technique will work very well for you in the future. Have fun with it!
Great tips!!!! Makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks for sharing😊❤️
I'm glad you liked those tips Suzanne, they will come in so handy. I know they have saved me hours. Thank you for watching.
Awesome tips. Thank you..
Happy to share with you John, glad you liked those tips, and thank you for watching.
So glad I found you. The tips are great! Your paintings behind you are gorgeous. Wow!
That was a very nice compliment on my artwork Dolphine! Thank you, and happy you liked the tips. Hope I can show you more good things in the future!
Glad these tips were helpful Jaline! I use them all the time. The pad is a real time saver.
Hi girls! I enjoyed your tips and conversations glad i read comments and replies,I was just "passing through". I haven't painted for a long time . After read and watching video, i am feeling motivated....😻😊

Perfect! I have tinted my gesso with a deep peach color - similar to fredricks tinted canvases - and a pink. The paintings take on the oil colors so vibrant. Ty for sharing!

Great little tip that I wanted to share with my viewers Karen. Hope you will find it very useful and handy. Thank you for watching.
Very helpful - I've watched several videos on this subject, and all are different - REALLY different! But this seems the smoothest, fastest method (sponge brush) for smaller surfaces. Thanks!
You're very welcome JanM! I have used all these methods to put Gesso on a canvas, but my very favorite is always the paint pad.
What a great idea, using a paint edger, I'll be trying this !! Thanks
It does work great Vicky! Hope you enjoy all the tips!
