even then, a dermatologist isnt qualified to talk about makeup placement. only a makeup artist and possibly a plastic surgeon (even then a plastic surgeon is iffy.) but yeah youre right, doctors arent concerned with the artisry of makeup so why would i take advice from them.

That's like saying someone who is a sushi chef is an expert in baking, because they both work in the kitchen. Sure if they also trained and worked in baking, but otherwise that's not a source I'd go to for expertise. I'll stick to my Robert Welsh techniques thank you!

He isn't inventing any new science based techniques; he is just wrongly applying his knowledge into something that seem similar but totally different (altering one's facial appearance - one: Semi-permanently with invasive means ; the other: Temporarily with a layer of paints on top).

Claiming this as “science of makeup” is an immediate red flag to me as the base of his advice is based on a falsehood. Makeup is an art form not a science, hence why we use the terms makeup artistry and makeup artists, not makeup science and makeup scientists. Makeup artistry uses theory derived from painting and sculpting, not medicine or physics or whatever. The science part of makeup is just the actual chemistry surrounding the creation of the products themselves. When it comes to the application part of the process, you’ve now ventured into the field of art.

Do you know a lot of doctors on TikTok? I really don’t trust especially when it comes to the use of natural products. I cannot use chemical products on my face which I can’t use like man-made chemicals, so I used a lot of natural products on my face. I can use some things but not everything so you know when I see a doctor go all this natural product doesn’t work. This causes this and that causes that and there’s no scientific evidence. I feel like if people have been using it for 1000 years then you know, it’s probably still good and still works but what it is is a lot of these doctors get kickbacks for recommending prescriptions. Some of them even get upwards to $25-$50,000 in kickbacks their doctors offices will have incentives like vacations, yacht cruises trips to the opera museums, and these are given to them by the pharmaceutical companies, based on how many products or how much drugs they sell to people so when I see a dermatologist, a doctor, recommending certain things I don’t trust it

in a way, this reminded me my class in college (i did graphic design) and something we learn is that not always the "mathematic correct" is the VISUAL correct, like, when you have the letter X you would think is simply 2 lines crossing each other, when in reality, one of the lines is slightly twitched up or down to really "look" centered. with makeup is the same, "mathematically" correct doesn't account for our actual perception of things, so even if it makes sense that if you want an area to look fuller you have to put something bright there, our perception will compensate for that and sometimes make other area more hollow/darker and get a odd look overall

I admit that a lot of my influence has been from stage make-up (back in the 60's &70s it was very heavy and exagerated, but easinly modified to adapt for day to day wear) so i look at things like this, and various tutorials and if it makes sense, i might try it. I would like to point out at your eyes makeup. Your eyes look unreal. The black colour around eyes makes you pupil super black as well, and the white of the eye looks extra white because of that. The contrast is stunning!

OMG, thank you, Robert!! I’ve been thinking about all this since I’ve seen his “scientific makeup”! I don’t argue, that he’s a great M.D., but doing fillers and plastic surgery is physically altering the face structure, when makeup is working with what you have using the art of it. That’s why painted white lines do not physically pull the mouth up, that’s why the dull blotches on your face will not sink your cheeks in 😂. Those are totally different things! 🎉

Great job explaining and demonstrating this flaw in the filler placement contour concept. You saved hundreds of thousands of people from using these erroneous dermatology makeup tips.
-I think it is this dermatologist’s arrogance and belief that he knows more than a makeup artist is what prevented him from asking one for their expertise before putting out videos based on flawed concepts!

Makeup is science AND art. There's a place for just measurements, abstract ideals, etc, but artistic sensibility and technique cannot be excluded from the equation. By the way, he probably does have those things when it comes to the art of filling faces, but he's basically trying to do painting with the techniques of a sculptor.
It can be interesting getting some perspective from someone from another field, but still, it's not the same.

For years I've put a light pink eye-brightener by the orbital bone(bottom), for my hollows. It was better than just putting concealer on the entirety of the under eye. But, it's true that it can actually make the area look much worse if it's not done absolutely perfectly (as in making sure not to bring the colour above the ridge of the hollow). Your technique is much easier and actually more effective. Thank you!

If I want makeup advice, I'll get it from a professional makeup artist.

It made me tune out because it made me feel dumb for not knowing the terms and like I was being talked at and not to.

It felt a bit...off? I'm not sure how to put it but most people who are knowledgeable in their fields are able to cater their conversations to who they're speaking with. You'd think he'd use less medical jargon (or at least explain it) because his core audience on TikTok aren't likely familiar with anatomy - which as a doctor he should have ample experience with. Maybe he's just a bad teacher.
