Great video mate! I work on a minesite in central Queensland in the light vehicle department servicing the vdj landcruiser on site and we have had the same issue with dust entry in the intake quite a bit! We have removed the factory air box and capped off all entry and exit holes including the drain at the bottom and tested for leaks using a smoke bomb! Have found that majority of them Leak around the seal of the air filter and have combatted this by using a small amount of rubber grease or Vaseline to help the seal each service + bending the clips slightly to get more tension down on the seal.

thanks for a very well done update Ronnie, things need to be serviced and replaced especially when driven hard like you do. Hope the old girl keeps 4wheeling for another 100k.
I suggest you trash the K&N air filter and fit OEM or equivalent Paper element filter. the K&N is a "performance" filter, it achieves this by flowing more air. it has less effective surface area so to flow more air it will have larger openings and let more dust into your engine. so you make a choice you want an extra 2.5hp or a "dusted" engine? you've seen the dust on the inlet tube! have you done a engine oil analysis, would be surprised if there was not a high silica reading...

I've found the 79 airbox lids don't always make a perfect seal. A small bead of silicone on the sealing surface between the lid and the air filter can help. Also the factory air filters may be a little more restrictive compared to your K&N but they offer much better filtration.

Appreciate this video mate. I'm new to offroading and touring, been doing it in a modified Subaru Forester (you'll be surprised where it's gone!). It's a good reminder that things wear out and break even on the "unbreakable" 70 series. Makes me feel slightly better about all the things I've broken 4wheeling around Alice Springs in the past 6 months haha.

Hey Ronny, in regards to your damaged steering stops its due to incorrect adjustment of steering stops after a wheel alignment. Get them adjusted so the front stop on the opposite side hits first. Check for cracks in the mounting near the diff too! (:

Another great video good insight to what you'll encounter and expect if you are regularly Wheeling. I would can the k&n filter and just go with the oem paper filter. These "performance " filters yes let more air by but also let more dust and dirt by so in the long term damaging more than protecting your engine. Just swap out filters on a severe duty cycle as I'm sure your on one already. Cheers!

The Toyota service manual says to replace the air filter every 10k at each service. I agree with you - use Toyota and replace at each service or more often.

I used to run OEM filter but got a lot more dust through. I've used them on several vehicles here in Africa and hands down... better filtering and flow every time. I also service other vehicles and they have much more accumulated dust.

Hey Ronny keep in mind that your videos are not only watched in AUS. (Which is obviously nice)
Therefore it's a good addition to know what kind of conditions caused problems, or even not. Like you mentioned the red dust. This wouldn't be an issue in Britain, or Scandinavia etc.
Interestingly head doesn't seem an issue, like for the engine. Regarding the air filter it's worth keeping in mind that you're using a snorkel! If you wouldn't it would have been way worse.

As a thrifty person with much appretiation for good quality products... I chose toyota.... As a person who is interested in offroading.... I eventually went with a thirsty but well loved land cruiser 100. (I have a family so the 100 series fit my overall needs the best)(im in usa and my choices are limited)
As ive been researching ronny has been a big influence in my outlook on 4wd adventuring... I specifically like this vid because there are no products i feel i gotta lust after... But instead... Back to the basics... Take care of your truck- and itll take care of you....
Id easily spend 2k on oem parts or mechanical bits before i finally pulled the trigger on 2k worth of mods/accessories.... Great advise on this video and its good to see what it takes to get out there and get dirty.... Its not the mods/equipment.... Its the responsibility of taking care of the machine you have entrusted to take care of you

Keep hearing complaints about the narrow rear axle. Seems to be an odd thing for Toyota to do. Here in the States the only reason that is done is for duallies.
Can't understand why they would continue producing the truck with such a highly complained about issue.
Lastly... Extremely jealous over here. We can't get the beast here.

    • @Mikepower1978
      @Mikepower1978 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The narrow rear axle is a left over from the 6 cylinder variants. I think Toyota are in no rush to change the assembly line because the 70 series has no competition in its market place.

I am thinking to by a 4WD. But with the budget that I have I can only get +150k kms cars. I've seen your videos, it is correct that most of the times you are driving your car offroad, but you take good care of it and you are careful with it. If you have all these things to fix and change in your car, then I might have a bit of problem with a second hand one! After watching this video, I was thinking maybe I should sell my daily drive and add it to my budget to buy a brand new 4WD!

  • @mark2073

Looks like you don't have the same rust issues as us here in Canada with salt on the roads but I'm going through and cleaning out inside the frame, then treatment with Ospho rust converter overnight, then spraying Eastwood Internal Frame Coating. Also I noticed some rust starting inside the rocker panels (hadn't made it through yet) so I'll go do that too. Rust from inside the body panels poking through seems to be an issue with LC's in Australia, presumably from the beach driving where the salt takes a long time to wash out from the lack of rain. I think they could benefit from it.

Thanks for this. Ive recently started to service and modify my own vehicle, simply due to affordability and the fact that I cant find a mechanic that wont charge $100 to just look at the car for 10 minutes. Its been difficult, but lm learning. Recently did all fluids successfully, diff breathers and some bar work. Now moving on to lights and suspension and might have a crack at tightening the handbrake.

In regards to your air filter, why did you take the air spinner off the snorkel, the spinners take out 50% of the dust, without them your ramming down kilo's of dust into your airfilter. Of course any filter will fail. Damaging your engine with dust certainly outways the little but of performance you might gain.Patrick

That K&N air filter is letting dust straight into your engine. It belongs in the bin. Infact I would never use a K&N in any off road vehicle that will see dust. Last trip I changed my Genuine Toyota filter 3 times in 15,000 KM and every time the filter was full of dust (doing it's job). Do some research and show us a video on the topic, I'm interested to know whats right and wrong

LC's are expensive to own. The maintenance cost is high.
When you maintain an LC and drive it nicely it'll always be reliable.
Service every 10000km is vital and changing the oil and filter along with the air filter every 5000km is also a good idea.

They replaced the slave cylinders but didnt clean any of the brake fluid of the car and gave it back to me. I had to re paint the rear axle and brake cover etc. take it all aprt and clean twice to make sure it was okay then tell them to bleed the system again as i had a huge dead spot in the pedal from air in the system. Now i had been going to these guys for years and same with my old man. How can you trust anyone if the local shop cant fcken do a simple job.

question if you are getting filings in the diff why not address the problem now instead of later???
I ask this because it indicates you have serious issues that only appear minor at present though will become serious as time goes on...
loooking at the driving you do ronny, I might suggest replacement of the stock toyota diffs with DANA's or similar because the stock toyota parts are designed for tarmac/unsealed roads and towing use, for where you go in your travels you be best investing in something more appropriate for that use..if you are starting to see cracking in the diff housing already you be better to replace..
as a welder myself I will say this you are only patching a problem which will not correct its issue with welding you only create fracture issues in more areas because stress type fractures will find the weakest point and re-appear..
Unless you understand this you will not fix the problem you will just prolong and compound the problem over time..

Hi Ronny great vid mate. Can you post a vid on Electrical under the bonnet EG: spot light fuses, NARVA wiring, FM radio antenna replacement wiring. With all of the 79 series and 78 Troopys out there, I can not find any videos or Photos of under bonnet Auxiliary wiring or Narva wiring or how to mount fuses in the engine bay. I do know that you have a couple of vids on your old setup an DIY Electrical and DIY Tips etc but I was looking for more specific cleaning up the wiring around the Primary and Secondary batteries for Spotties or Winches, etc, etc , that also may feed back to the rear Third battery in the rear. You did show in your new setup that you have the Two batteries in the front wired in, and then it runs to the back battery, but I never saw how you did that...so to speak.

This is probably a daft question, but I’m going to ask anyway. I do high mileage in my bakkie (UTE) my Mitsubishi L200 has 300k on the clock. I’ve always used fully synthetic oil, but my mechanic has advised me to use a high mileage oil. I guess a thicker viscosity. What are your thoughts and what do you use?
On a side note, even though my Colt is 11 years old, it’s still an amazing vehicle. I recent spent some cash and had the motor over hauled just because of the mileage. No faults. Just preventative maintenance. Ps: I’m probably going to purchase an FJ or Prado by the end of the year.

11:46 is he firing shots at Patriot campers??
kind of seems like it and i agree, almost nobody talks about the wear and tear, because it's money that you need to spend.

Excellent video. One question. Are your rear shocks upside down or designed that way?

I'd love to know more about the water cooled alternator. I need to do that to my 200 series as well in the future.

Recently I was thinking about contaminants getting between your rotors and pads when off-road, was thinking that a slotted rotor might be able to prevent that by cleaning the pad. Might be something to test? DBA is Australian and they make discs they market as being for off road, maybe something to look at?

+Phos9 I've been thinking about slotted rotors but my only concern is that racks, mud and sand will just fill the slots and make it more abrasive. I'd have to test that out.

Ronny Dahl yeah the slots collecting mud seems to be the conventional wisdom but DBA has a line of slotted rotors marketed for off-road use so I'm not sure if there's something to it or if it's just marketing.

    (p) This and the review video... Well done! There's a lot of good info for any 4x4 vehicle not just the LC. I was surprised at the overall undercarriage condition (good) seeing that you do experience saltwater beaches. Do you do any anti-corrosion work (sprays/coating/manual cleaning)? Was really surprised with the dust in the bearings... Did you find any other seals that were compromised? Cheers.

Hi Ronny I am just about to embark on a around Australia trip and will be pretty heavy...my question is you mentioned the parabolic springs as one of your best mods, and after I have finished my trip a will be removing about 400kg and don't really want to replace the rear springs twice
