I don't know if they thought about this, but the Master Emerald becomes particularly small at some point during the last story of Sonic Adventure 2.

After Sonic 2 (the Movie), while clearly following its own lore, I think the idea that Knuckles can manipulate chaos energy is basically confirmed, he does it to Robotnik, the flashbacks imply this is a power, etc. It's not brute strength, it's like an ability.
The adventure series says this since he can remake the master emerald and can make it nullify the chaos emeralds
Yeah, I never believed that it was knuckles's "brute strength" that took out sonic's super form. I always thought of it as he knows certain things about the emerald that no one else knows. Including how to depower someone with all chaos emeralds without any external power.

Yeah but to what degree? He never did anything besides in sa2 plus he needs to be in front of the master emerald. He's no where as good to manipulate chaos energy like shadow let alone sonic. With stopping time and traveling through time teleporting and literal spears of energy from it.
@@bluenitethewarrior9332 in SA2, he was returning energy to the chaos emeralds since Biolizard drained them. Other than that, they just underutilize Knuckles and his abilities, but the few times we see him do these things are all we really need to see unless they straight out change it.

Considering the Master Emerald canonically has the power to literally disable the Chaos Emeralds at Knuckles' command (e.g. Sonic Adventure 2, inside Space Colony ARK), it seems pretty obvious that Knuckles simply used that power to stop Sonic's use of the Emeralds' power when he arrived on Angel Island.

I have my own theory:
We know that the Master Emerald can neutralize the Chaos Emeralds, and we also know that the Super Emeralds can be used regadless of distance.
It isn't far-fetched to assume the Master Emerald can also be used regadless of distace given it gave the Chaos Emeralds that power.
When he brought up the master emerald I presumed that was the case in point.
In SA2 we had to get to the ARK's core to get Knuckles to the Chaos Emeralds so he could use the Master Emerald on them. Also in Sonic X season 3 it's revealed that Knuckles needs to be close to the Master Emerald to use its full power.

So is Knuckles a victim of Sega's inability to fully utilise it's IP or characters? It seems Kunckles' possible complex characteristic from his debut, were simply ignored to make him a bumbling 2D cartoon character.

Remember SEGA created Alex Kidd, a guy whose backstory states he can use a super awesome fighting technique... which he uses in only 2 of his 7 games and even then ignores it completely for major bosses and instead forces you to play RockPaperScissors with them... yeah..

Let's not forget that the handsy final boss from Sonic 3 can knock Sonic out of Super form. Getting smacked super hard seems to do the job. Super Sonic can be crushed to death, so maybe getting smacked with enough force is what knocks him out of Super form.
Or maybe it's just because Sonic gets rubbed the wrong way...
I'm pretty sure this was a glitch/oversight, though I definitely love the idea of Eggman making a machine specificially to knock Sonic out of his super form.
I always thought that made Big Arms a really powerful and interesting boss, too bad they removed this property from Origins
This game has the best storytelling of any in the series. The amount of story detail that is communicated in the cutscenes, background art, and boss fights is amazing.

I actually believe the reason why Knuckles was able to stop supersonic was because he was using the power of the Master emerald. They said in Sonic Adventure 2 that the Master Emerald has the power to neutralize and stop the Chaos Emeralds. You in fact see Knuckles use the Master Emerald to actually stop the Chaos Emeralds in the final story on Sonic Adventure 2.
I love how this all makes sense even without factoring in the Phantom Ruby which was later found on the very same Angel Island

I like the theory that Knuckles uses the Master Emerald to neutralize the Chaos Emeralds on contact with sonic. We don’t know if he has it with him but since he can absorb it and Angel Island’s already fallen he definitely could. Otherwise I’d accept that he use the Master Emerald from a distance.

I'd had the theory that "Knuckles harnessed the power of the Master Emerald to stop Super Sonic, which in Adventure is outright stated that it can neutralise the Chaos Emeralds", for quite a while. It's nice to see other people in the comments on the same wavelength.

there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for knuckles being able to body super sonic.
1 Knuckle's body has been exposed to huge amounts of super energy from the master emeralds (field strength bonus)
2 sonic was in training to be super with no rings (that's why knuckles didn't kill him when he hit him, but also didn't make him lose his rings.
3 being so close to the master emerald threw the chaos emeralds into flux due to trying to resonate due to being in proximity to the master emerald.
4 knuckles regardless is also insanely strong from the waist up (powerful arms) and can on some level feel out how to attack chaos energy on reflex (echidnas have a bunch of weird sensory abilities in real life, unlike a bad-nick)
knuckles + 1 buff + natural talent >> than sonic + 1 buff - 2 nerfs - experience dealing with natural talent

I mean if Krillin was able to hurt Goku with a rock, who was off guard but technically rockin' SSJ, then Vegeta at his base punching Goku at full power would probably stumble him (although probably easier to get back to)
Well if Super: Broly has anything to add, SSJ is still extremely powerful when compared to base form, but Broly, the Androids, and various characters while training can still get some good licks in. Especially if that character is caught off guard or the character in base throws out a more powerful technique.

You gained a sub just for throwing my boy knuckles some love. Been my favorite since that Friday night picking up sonic 3 at blockbuster. Dude catches so much hate. He's a flying brass knuckle wearing badass.
This actually makes perfect sense. The Adventure games directly state that the main purpose of the Master Emerald is to "neutralize the chaos emeralds", meaning that it can pretty much just shut the Emeralds down automatically. Knuckles pulled a similar stunt to this at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 when he used the M.E. to deactivate the ARK's impact sequence after the first Biolizard fight. He literally says to the Master Emerald "Only you can do this - Stop the Chaos Emeralds!" And lo and behold, that's what happens. That's why the Biolizard fuses itself with the colony and decides to drag it down the rest of the way manually. So since Knux can not only shrink the Master Emerald down to a size where he can discreetly carry it around with him, but also use it to shut down an entire space station powered by it, then of course he can sock one little chaos-powered super hedgehog with a master emerald-powered punch and shut the emeralds down. SA2 pretty much confirmed this whole theory without even directly referencing it!
It was simple, he touched Sonic in a place that makes him uncomfortable.
“Kids, there's nothing more cool than being hugged by someone you like, but if someone tries to touch you in a place or in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, that's no good! It's your body! No one has the right to touch you if you don't want them to! So what do you do? First, you say no, then you get outta there! Yeah things went downhill. Like sonic boom happened, knuckles gained the IQ of a blanket, amy became the weird mom therapist, and everyone but tails lost basically their backstory and character development.

Considering Tails beat Eggman at least once, or could even force him into a stalemate, along with fighting chaos 4... that's Sega's retcon BS as to why he's scared shittless of chaos 0. It's like he reverted back into how he was before he met Sonic....
I think it's as simple as this: Sonic was caught off guard and lost his focus
Exactly that’s what I’m tryna tell ppl. Knuckles ain’t more powerful than Super Sonic oh hell no, Sonic was still new to the transformation and inexperienced allowing Knuckles to get the upper hand on Sonic
This also tracks with Sonic Advance 2 where Eggman has a machine that sucked energy out of sonic (rings ; though we know they are just a gameplay mechanic)
and Super Sonic Did NOT change back. I think this is it, perhaps a little better than even the master emerald energy theory- Sonic Unleashed, was another very weird moment where SEGA decided to inexplicably have Super Sonic have a stupid moment- BUT, each emerald DOES have literally infinite power, so it doesn't make sense you can drain Super Sonic , or punch him out of it just because. If he keeps tapping the emeralds (like he did to stay super for a week in Sonic Advance 1), you can't drain infinite power- odds are, Super Sonic has to keep some focus at least, or master emerald energy helped knux. Or maybe, both. This early on in the series, first or 2nd time going super? yeah, he lost focus.
Because Super Forms fight deities and beyond- Knux is paste in a real fight.
I think the Knuckles powered up with the Master Emerald, and booked it for the beach, which knowing Knuckles, he definitely has a shortcut to.
As for shattering it in SA2, the Master Emerald clearly has some awareness of what is going on, it shows Knuckles the Egg Carrier when he's wondering where the last pieces are in SA1, so it probably allowed Knuckles to break it because it recognizes the danger of Eggman, and that of course Knuckles can put it back together when it's in a safe situation once again.

Thank you for bringing up that Knuckles is not an idiot for not recognizing the forest of red flags around Eggman, considering that he's been isolated. I also point out that that mural on the wall of the Hidden Palace only shows Super Sonic and Eggman fighting over the Master Emerald. No indication which one's trying to steal it. Knuckles having seen that for years, and then Eggman tells him Sonic is coming for his emerald? And then Knuckles sees Sonic hyped up on Chaos Emerald power? Hell yeah, he's likely to believe Eggman's story!

Well, considering Knuckles has the hyper form and it looks similar to his normal form, he could have also had gotten some of that going on at the time, and it blinked out RIGHT after he actually knocked the super out of Sonic. And THANK! YOU!- for mentioning that Knux isn’t stupid. Honestly, the game manual said he was clever, and it’s shown by the fact that he keeps showing up in game at some kind of trap trigger to mock you and then send you to your supposed doom. Sure, those traps were probably there ages ago, but knux probably has had to reset them or something at least a few times.
Would be something that he does something similar to how he uses against Sonic from Sonic 3 like for Rouge.

4:20 here's my theory, Knuckles after being beat up by sonic and being shocked from Dr. Robotnik, he is barley holding onto his strength so maybe he could very much beat a super form robot or hedgehog but because of what happened before he can only do so much and has to wait for mecha sonic to go back into his normal state to hit him
you know this made me think of another thing, if he punched sonic out of his super form canceling the abilities of the emeralds, does knuckles have the power of the Master Emerald and do what it does (probably to a small extent), basically well yeah I know he is the guardian and protects it and knows where it goes and everything but what if spending so much time with it gave him the abilities of what the Master Emerald could do, so like in SA2, he wouldn't even need to rebuild it as in the final moments where he tells it to stop the Chaos Emeralds he could do that himself but probably not as good. That'd be something for &K November

Londonlink They’re not exactly canon. They’re just an adaptation of the games. There’s a reason we dont see any archie characters in the games.

I believe it has to do with the master emerald. Knuckles is infused with its power, so him being able to punch Sonic so hard that the chaos emeralds drop make sense.

I think of it as more like Knuckles knows a weak spot in the emeralds. More like he caught Sonic by surprised, giving him no time to protect himself or use the power of the emeralds to protect himself. Since knuckles knows how the power works way more than sonic, it’s more like a “Even a giant gets knocked out by a hit from the back.”

How many hits does it take sonic to beat knuckles when he has no rings? Twelve or eight ... I can’t rightly remember. Knuckles was a BAMF. Still took the same amount of hits even if you were super sonic!
Now afterwards knuckles was pretty messed up. You remember how he looked at the beginning of sky sanctuary - he was a mess! He was never the same after that fight and still sees a chiropractor to this day from the injuries he sustained. That is ultimately why he was so tough before the knuckles story and less so in mushroom hill. Sonic just beat knuckles’s red hide blue and immediately afterwards robotnick beat his blue hide red again.

Knuckles took eight hits, because he was boss of the stage. If you swapped them and play as knuckles, you'd go down in one hit without rings. Plus Knuckles has one move, which doesn't work for us, when we play as him. He can crouch and block Sonic attack. If we try to block any badnik from hitting us, we'll take damage (I can't recall if that's the case for bullets.) Qualities of being controlled by A.I. and being a boss. Both of them get wrecked by one badnik without rings, no matter what. I don't believe an injury can turn you from 8 hitpoints tank into a 1 hitpoint character permamently. It's just game mechanics, sadly. You just don't have proper health bars to compare characters in Sonic and Knuckles.

Well i have another theory.
Probably everybody knows that the first cutscene of Sonic Mania takes place in the exact same place, however this time it's eggrobos digging out the phantom ruby. Phantom King in egg reverie zone has been able to damage Super Sonic using one of his attacks, meaning it does have influence to the chaos energy. Since Sonic 3 takes place before Sonic Mania, meaning the ruby is still there under the ground, what if it weakend the super form and let Knucles (awarely ot not) knock Sonic out of it?
@@ImCleveMusic Well this isn't up for debate, as the Phantom Ruby did the same thing at the end of the game to Super Sonic, knock him out of his super form when he tried rushing at it before he was sent to the Modern universe. So it's possible that the presence of his super form awakened the ruby, causing it to pulse energy around the area. All it needed was a powerful force to help knock Sonic out of his super form since it was deep underground, and Knuckles was that guy.
I do my best to work around the logic of what is provided in Sonic 3 and Knuckles on its own. Grabbed a little from SA1, but that specifically focused on the master emerald and Knuckles background. Mania, as great as it is, kinda throws things all over the place because they had to tie in that horrible garbage gem in with Sonic Forces. It's easy to retcon with a brand new unheard of gem that can do whatever the plot needs it to do...but that's just not a fun answer.
I guess...not. Sonic Mania and the Phantom Ruby came too many years later to use that logic.
