Reliving The War is a weekly show that takes an in-depth look at the WWF vs WCW “Monday Night War”. With WWF Raw airing on the USA Network and WCW Nitro airing live on TNT every Monday night, fans would choose which show to watch. This resulted in a TV ratings battle between the two companies. This time period in pro wrestling saw record viewers tuning in every week to see the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, the nWo, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Goldberg and Sting.
WCW continues to build towards Halloween Havoc 1997 with appearances from Hollywood Hogan and Roddy Piper. Hogan wants Sting to appear at Halloween Havoc so he can get a good look at what happens to Piper, but Hogan gets more than he bargained for when The Stinger surprises the whole nWo in this week's episode of Nitro.
On WWF Raw is War Shawn Michaels and his new faction get officially named when Bret Hart calls them "nothing but a bunch of degenerates". Stone Cold Steve Austin gets his new contract this week, Owen Hart battles Kama, and the Legion of Doom promise to retire if they don't win the tag titles in the main event.

This series is seriously like therapy for me
this so much...my life has changed so much i have legal issues health issues family issues just everything life can throw at a person but this show always gives me an hour of peace of mind. therapy indeed. nostalgia, entertainment. this dude has no idea how much he means to some of us, looking forward to his videos each week.

I really enjoy that he hates some of the things i hated about wcw. The finishes, the run ins, the dqs, the blah blah blah blahs. But seriously, i got the point where i felt like each nitro was a bummer since it was just building to that months ppv.
Days Left Until Bret Hart Leaves The WWF: 27
Bios brought it up a little, but the reason why Bret Hart looked so annoyed during the opening promo is because this Raw happened 1 day after Bret tried burying the hatchet with Shawn & said that, if the roles were reversed, he'd gladly do the job for Shawn. Shawn, being the Grade-A prick that he was during this time, gave the infamous "Well I wouldn't do the same for you" response, which now makes it three times in just over a month that Shawn verbally told Bret that he refuses to do the job for him. At this point, Bret has every right to be pissed at Shawn, and next week he'll have the chance to be a prick back at him.
Given how many times Shawn did the job for Bret before Wrestlemania XII, I don't blame him for getting tired of it.
@@Rob_Thorsman That's wrestling though, Shawn could still have more respect. I give Bret more props for at least trying to make peace whereas Shawn's childish tantrums just kept making the situations worse.

@@Rob_Thorsman Yeah, I can see that logic, too. It's just a shame that Shawn was such an insufferable jerk during this time, so he handled it in the worst possible way with Bret. If Shawn had even an inkling of what this would all result in ahead of time, I bet he'd still do exactly the same stuff, if only so that he could grab some popcorn & see it all implode in front of him, ala what he & Triple H did during this very episode of Raw.
I should point out, though, that this whole situation would also essentially spark the fuse that would lead into the Montreal Screwjob, which in turn would lead to the creation of the Mr. McMahon character, which in turn would culminate in the legendary Austin vs. McMahon feud that ended WCW's 83 week winning streak & eventually result in WWF winning the Monday Night War.
In essence, it all starts here.

I was only 13 at this particular time. Even though I would watch Raw and Nitro on Mondays, I would still watch the recap shows on Saturday mornings, just to relive the excitement. Good times!
The amount of talent on both rosters is ridiculous!
Especially WCW at this time. I honestly think WCW had too much top talent for their own good.
@@JM1993951 the WCW roster is far and away better than WWF. Issue was WWFs booking was better than WCWs and really knew what to do with their stars. Where as WCW didn’t.
WCW in 97/98 had perhaps the greatest roster in history, they just didn't use it to its full potential

I really hope that as the War rages on, we get to see more custom intros like the ones for Alex Wright and Disco Inferno.
Og kane's mask is still pretty intimidating looking, especially in the red light, he just looked so damn ominous
And to think, it was difficult for him to breathe out of that particular mask..
I started rewatching wrestling back then shortly after this... it's nice to see rock a nobody, goldberg's beginning, Brett hart in WWF etc... love the series
9:23-9:34 I never realized how much Animal looked like Taz and Hawk looked like Jesse Ventura
Most WWE clips cut HBK saying yeah and hitting the table at the end of his promo, and for some reason that part makes it even better for me. Of course you kept it in, like a pro.

I vividly remember this as a teenager and how exciting it was when the lights went out and Kanes music hit. You instantly knew that anyone in sight was gonna get wrecked and it was awesome
Hennig main-eventing each week made sense, seeing as he had the most prestigious belt that was actually being defended on a regular basis.
Certainly an upgrade to the days when Arn Anderson vs. Tom Zenk was the only championship defense you'd see that wasn't a jobber squash.

It was realllllllllllly good to see the genesis of the "Degeneration X" name.
Also,
the "Stings R Us" segment at the end is fondly remembered by WCW fans (the plot hole was laid in that earlier segment, when nobody helped Piper as he was jumped by the NWO). Great short term storytelling.
I'm a fan of the classic DX antics. Good stuff here.
Piper said he put the belt "where Hulk would never find it". He must have hid it on the set of an ACTUALLY GOOD movie.
THIS Is one of the weeks I've been waiting for. I just got into watching wrestling as a younger kid after not seeing anything since roughly Summerslam '92. The arrival of Kane on RAW Destroying The Hardy Boyz was one of my 1st new wrestling memories. It's crazy how many years have passed but I feel like I Just watched all of these RAW Ep. yesterday. I had somewhat watched some Nitro but didn't realize the magnitude of what was happening in real time and grew to appreciate it all in being able to watch on WWE Network and these Recaps. THIS Series is AMAZING. As has been echoed many times in Comments... Great Work My Friend.

Don Callis came a long way, from being the mouthpiece of a jobber faction and wearing military clothes, to wearing bright suits and managing Kenny Omega in AEW.

And being seen by quarter of the audience that saw him with that jobber faction

Not to mention his stint in ECW being a Virus, A Commentator and being Rhino's manager (Sorta).

Loving how the time has increased from around 25 minutes to over 40. Would we get a 60 minute?
Well it had to increase. Due to both Nitro and Raw moving from 1 hour to 2 hours each week. Also the amount of content on both shows called for a long Reliving The War every week. To cover the content. It will be interesting to see how things are covered once Nitro moves to 3 hours each week.
The fact that you get these out so consistently is great. Always look forward to these. Hope you aren't burning yourself out.

Ive been watching this series since nearly the beginning. Im currently binging the entire series again. This series makes me feel like im home again, like my dad is still with me. Makes me remember when id shout RAW updates to him from the living room and hed shout NITRO updates from his bedroom..... these are happy memories and i want to thank you, sir, mr. This is a TRu flashback of my childhood in the '90s... I love this series and it got me a full depth of the whole Monday Night Wars. It's a reminder of how great wrestling was, it let me see everything I missed, and let's me see it in a different view being an adult now. Thank you for creating this series. This is the episode I am currently on and will continue to watch every episode to the end. I can't wait to to see it all unfold and see who wins in your opinion

1997 was the best year as a wrestling fan. WCW WWF were both great.
My 10 year old self wrote "suck it" on all my school folders, having no idea what it meant, getting suspended from school for that as I LOVED DX!

I have been marathoning the series since subbing , now a new episode. Amazing.
This is by far my favorite series on youtube (or anywhere else for that matter) but ever since The Summer Slam i've been dreading the impending The Survivor Series. Bret isn't just my favorite wrestler ever, he's the single GREATEST professional wrestler to ever lace up boots. But your analysis of the real world correlation with what we're seeing on screen is absolutely astute and insightful.
On a side note, i've been a LONG time subscriber, since before you even had 10k subscribers and you have just kept improving in every single way, i'm so proud of how far you've come and look forward to every upload you provide. Love ya Ryan, hope you're enjoying your new abode.

Man I remember this episode so well, at the time of watching this I had an ear infection so I remember how I'd hear Bret Hart's music as high pitched on one ear but normal on the other.

I just have to say, I wasn't a huge wrestling fan growing up and I don't really watch the current stuff, but I was a wcw fan for awhile in the late 90s early 2000s. I absolutely love this series. Thanks for the effort.

I was at this Nitro! I remember the ring announcer telling the crowd who to cheer for before each match which was annoying as hell (That's why the crowd was cheering for Goldberg so much) As for the "Spitting spot" in the main event, DDP actually spit the gum he was chewing into Perfect's mouth
