I have always thought that the ‘stretch out your pouch’ theory made no sense! So I ignored it and occasionally drink sparkling water with no ill effects. Thanks for the clarification.
Thank you so much for that info! Straws and carbonated drinks are taboo from my dr.’s practice, probably more from the dietician than anyone in there, so I appreciate your input as a Bariatric physician. I do drink a diet caff free coke, but never more than 1/3 of a 12 oz. bottle per day. It does help me to enjoy food again, not because of my OLD WAYS, but because it goes well with what I am eating at the time. You are my go to dr. In between my dr. Visits. Thank you so much!
DR. WEINER I follow your pound of cure eating life style. I couldn't be happier. Iam 1 pound away from my goal of 150 pounds. I have never felt better. Thank you for time you dedicate to the baraxtric world Your truly a blessing in my life.
i'm a huge fan of carbonated water, and i'm now a week post op gastric sleeve, and mourning carbonated water...i'm thinking i'll hold off the first healing weeks and then a few months in start it back up again in smaller amounts because i'm craving it. Hopefully that won't ruin anything. I'm just thinking ok if it does fizz up in my stomach, won't i just burp the carbonation up ??
The first way that artificial sweeteners cause weight gain is by hijacking your tastebuds so they are only sensitive to super sweet foods. On a sweetness scale, artificial sweeteners are much sweeter than fruit. The result of consuming artificially sweetened foods and drinks is that fruit is no longer perceived as sweet, increasing your drive for sweeter foods like those that contain refined sugar. The second mechanism by which artificial sweeteners cause weight gain is that our sweet tastebuds let our brain know that a sugar load is coming, triggering our pancreas to release sugar metabolizing enzymes in expectation of the calorie boost. Artificial sweeteners trigger our sweet tastebuds but don’t deliver the calorie load that our body is expecting. As a result, our normally tight system of matching calorie expenditure to calorie consumption begins to break down. The result is that our metabolism loses its ability to respond appropriately to other sweet foods. The net result shifts your metabolic thermostat toward weight gain.

I was told no straw for the first couple weeks to not drink too fast and ingest more air. 🤷♀️ I still used a straw.
Love my zevia sodas and monkfruit teas. I have not noticed any adverse issues with it.
Thanks for the information I'm getting the bipas surgery in September next month!
Congratulations on your decision. I had mine on Mar 1, down 45 and it’s changed my life.
Thank you for all you do and the awesome information you give us. By the way I love this man. He is amazing. Glad you are my doctor.
Artificial Sweeteners don't "cause weight gain". That LITERALLY MAKES NO SENSE. the word "artificial" has gotten a bad wrap.
Exactly
Thank you!!

I would like to know how artificial sugars like stevia would lead to weight gain as they contain zero calories and glucose.
