    I had GB about 10 months ago. I never miss a dosage of my pills. I have lost 140lbs so far and I am 20lbs away from my ideal weight. I am looking forward to eventually taking a multivitamin every other day, maybe just three times a week to make sure I am not missing anything. I having been doing Keto since month two (but a very healthy version of it with lots of healthy, low carb veggies, organic, grass fed, etc etc).

    Seriously.... and I mean SERIOUSLY!!! I wish my surgeon would have told me half of what you are telling us in your videos. I live in Michigan and had my surgery done at Henry Ford Wyandotte. Everything went ok, but I wish I would have known more going in. Thank you for making these videos. You are a plethora of information for people like me that need to know this stuff!!! It seems every doctor has a different say on the diet after gastric sleeve, some say coffee is ok others no coffee ever, protein first or vegetables first, alcohol no alcohol. I wish there was an actual consensus because at this point it sounds like every doctor makes up whatever diet they want.

    Dr. Weiner, I really like the way you explain all your topics in videos, Thank you! I just had RnY on July 10th and I have been trying to find information about the stages of healing after the surgery ie. When does the brain re-connect to the gut system, how to make your gut as healthy as possible to ensure it creates the right hormones to achieve optimal weight loss, swelling, tissue repair etc..I feel SO many people get home and start scale watching for weight loss and forget there is a 8-12wk healing period which is SO important for setting up your future weight loss success. I feel many would benefit from this education so that they stop complaining that they aren't losing weight fast enough and get themselves into a bad headspace, start cheating and eating things they shouldn't, missing protein and water, vitamins and moving into the next phase too early because they "think" they're ready, but really they just want to go back to bad eating habits.

    Dr. Matthew Weiner, I am 29 years post Gastric Bypass. I continue to have iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 and D deficiencies. I receive IV iron every 3 to 6 mos depending on how my levels hold. I supplement with sublingual B12 and monthly vitamin D along with my regular daily vitamins. I did gain a lot of my weight back gradually over time. So, still dieting with all the side effects of gastric bypass.

    I am 44yrs old and had gastric sleeve several years ago. I was recently found to have a total iron of 11 - eating ice like crazy. Also had very dry eyes (unable to wear contacts for first time). My total iron is 40 now - after a little more than a month of iron and vitamin c. Can you recommend a better iron than FeroSul? Now that my iron is coming up, I am able to wear my contacts again - with no problems. So, I believe it was all connected. Of course my energy level is much improved - even at 40. My H&H was a little low - barely.Your videos are very educational.

      Kathy Draper Many hematologists are familiar with chelated formulations, even if they are not, you can buy them on the internet - you will need pretty large doses if your deficiency is severe. Sounds like you need some help from a good doc in your area familiar with anemia in bariatric surgery patients. Most traditional iron supplements are absorbed in the very first portion of your intestine and yours has been bypassed, remind your doctor about this and suggest a "chelated iron formulation"

    I had a gastric bypass in 1994. It was the one that where they take the small intestine and reroute it to the end of the small intestine. I don’t think that I’m getting my vitamins. My vitamin B12 is ok. I’m anemic. My BP dropped while I was sleeping and woke me up. By the time I was in the ER bed I guess I went to sleep because I woke up with nurses and a dr around me. I asked if I had coded. They said almost. My BP was really low. They had IV’s in both arms. I drink at least 1 gallon of water a day.

    • @trishna_6815

      There are NO KNOWN plant sources of B12. Unless it has b12 added, it doesn't have b12. Nutritional yeast (aka savoury yeast) usually (not always) has a good amount of b12 added, some (not all) soy milk, and some other veggo foods have it added. But you need to be really really sure you are getting enough from these sources if you're vegan and not otherwise supplementing. B12 deficiency can cause serious and permanent damage.

      Exercise is not nearly as important for weight loss success at age 57 as good nutrition is. I would make sure you are walking everyday, but more than that is unnecessary and will be more likely lead to injury than more weight loss. Focus your efforts on good nutrition.

    I have huge concerns about taking all of this darn calcium citrate. I am 8 weeks post op for a VSG. Frankly I don't understand it. I am a post menopausal woman whose dexa scan shows no osteoporosis. I have taken 10,000 IU of Vit D3 daily for several years because I need that much to keep my Vit D3 levels above 60. I also take Vit K2 100 mcg daily. I can't get a satisfactory response from my bariatric surgeon or the dietician to convince me that all of this calcium is necessary for me. In fact I am concerned that all of this calcium will have harmful effects on my cardiovascular system. How do I determine if my body really needs all of this calcium. Will blood work tell me if my body is getting enough calcium?

    • @apoundofcure
      @apoundofcure  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +naweofiam I personally don't have my patients take a calcium supplement - if you're concerned about osteoporosis, eating large amounts of vegetables and minimizing meat intake can help reduce calcium wasting by the kidneys and is probably a better strategy. I never supplement Vitamin K and would recommend that you discuss this with your doctor ASAP since Vitamin K can predispose you to heart attacks, strokes and venous blood clots (DVT/PE). It also sounds like you are taking more Vitamin D than you need. Just my opinion, there's not strong evidence on these issues so practices tend to vary from doctor to doctor.

    I noticed your channel after doing a search to find out more information about gastric bypass surgery post-op. I had Gastric Bypass surgery around February of 2015 and have lost a significant amount of weight since the procedure. I was concerned because I am an emotional eater and have been experiencing stress and depression lately and I am worried that my stomach may stretched a little bit because I am gassy lately. It could be my diet, since unfortunately I have reverted to eating habits. I am committed to never going back to the formerly unhealthy version of myself, but its a process. But is there a way to help your stomach get smaller or resettle itself into its original size. I've seen several articles online that focuses on a method called Gastric Bypass Pouch reset. Are you familiar with this and if so, is it possible or effective? Thank you for the information it was so much more informative that anything my Bariatric surgeon or nutritionist provided. my doctor says eat meat first, you says veggies first, he' say's 60 to 100 grams protein daily should I be worried about the protein or the vitamins with the veggies. also I was sleeved in August 2016 and no real help for after care.I'm taking 2 multi vitamins 2 calcium pills ,1 B-12 and 1 Iron pill per day. a lot of vitamins does this sound right.I stay hungry and I'm not losing weight have been stalled for a month now.Water gives me heartburn so bad I take 3 meds daily for that. My insurance will not cover aftercare but will pay for my yearly blood work. any suggestions would really help.I don't know who to ask these questions. Thank you

      +virginia brooks there are lots of support groups out there and most are free. Also, if you go to asmbs.org, you can find surgeons who will follow other surgeon's patients.

    This isn't about vitamins but is it true you can no longer take anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen, after surgery?

      I recommend against long term NSAID use for my gastric bypass patients (but not my sleeve patients)

    I began to have daily afternoon headaches when i started my weight loss journey May 1 2015. I was on Phentermine for a month shortly after that and i thought it was that.. i was taken off of it, and they didn't stop. I then thought maybe it was because i stopped diet coke and ate less sugar and fat. But it's now been 3.5 months and i still have them. They are mild, but come daily around the same time. So i stopped my multi vitamin (which i had started May 1st) and haven't had one since... any ideas? It was just a normal Natures Way multi vitamin,, not expired.. etc.

      Mimis Blessed Journey No ideas on this one. Even though the headaches stopped at the same time you stopped taking your vitamin, it does not prove that the vitamins were causing the headaches. It could have just been a coincidence.

      Ok, well thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. And the honesty that your not sure. I find it hard to believe also. I'm going to try to take them again and see if the headaches begin again. (I have told my dad, and everyone on You tube in my weight loss community about you. You have made so much sense with your theories and these are things we are not hearing from our Dr's.. so thank you again for making this information public.)

    Dr. Weiner - I will be having VSG and see a surgeon Feb.24/17. The nutritionist on staff said that I will need to take vitamins for life, including calcium. Although I have always taken at least a multi-vit, I don't seem to be able to take calcium - it makes me nauseous. I was told to try Calcium Citrate, much the same effect on me. Can I achieve the optimal amount of daily calcium I need through food after VSG, and at what point can I achieve this? Thank you!

      +Tracy Lew although most surgeons encourage calcium supplements, I don't.

    I hav VSG 10 yrs ago. Unfortunately I wasn’t told I needed to do follow up for a year, so I didn’t. I stopped going for follow up when I lost amount of weight i wanted. I didn’t realize I should hav continued going. As a result, gained 1/2 my weight back & I’m very distressed about it. What do l do now? Any suggestions? I don’t want anymore surgery!!{

    15% of people are having serious complications or they are dying from it. The numbers are rising every day since there number of surgeries have risen. this surgery is very dangerous and I have a brother in law in the hospital 8 months struggling from this horrible barbaric surgery period this surgery should be outlawed

      +Debedeb serious complications can occur, around 3% of the time after rygb and 1-2% of the time after sleeve. I'm sorry to hear about your brother in law.
