McClellan Air Tanker base has set a new record for the most fire retardant delivered in a single year at over 6.3 million gallons. That should give you an idea of how aggressive the air attack has been this year so far.

This afternoon the airshow was near Lake Davis. They even had a Super Scoop out of Reno, 2 DC 10s and the other planes that now seems to be near Milford. These guys aren't fooling around.

I saw the same thing , seems that we are neighbors :) Nice to meet you ... Everything is burnt up around me , & it's devastating that my local lake Frenchman's is gone , Lake Davis , Lake Almanor and now the ski resorts into Lake Tahoe :,,,,( I and a witness saw a D.E.W , as my windows are tinted we both looked at each other , my passenger said, " did you see that ? " Cause I was looking in my rear view mirror, and my passenger was in the back seat looking back . Long beam above the cloud ploom from high above , no clouds no lighting & the beam struck beyond the fire this was when the Dixie Fire 2nd time flare up , then after that beam Clover Valley ploom of smoke started .. I've heard about this technology, but us seeing it with our own eyes , we're 100% convinced they exist now. . Same beams as many pictures were taken by Paradise residents & a beam captured by a forest watch tower . Unbelievable

I wish you could do more updates on the Dixie fire twice a day like CALFIRE had been doing, but now all the attention is on the Caldor Fire.
I live in Herlong and we never got a warning to evacuate when the Beckwourth fire came through Doyle and jumped 395.
Two days ago the sheriff's department came through and gave us a mandatory evacuation order. The fire was over 15 to 20 miles away from the ridge and 395 by the Mark.
Last night it came down the ridge but the fire break they had set up i think has stopped it.
I don't see any flare ups this morning.
Anyways, hope you'll do more reports on the Dixie fire.
Oh, and a few of us are staying in Herlong.
Were going to fight it out if it gets to Patton Village

Juan, I been watching your fire reporting for 4 years now as well as other information sources. When you look at the maps it seems to me either its been burned or its going to be burned. Philosophically speaking what is the end game here. Seems billions of dollars spent on trying to prevent the inevitable. Aren't all these trees, as beautiful as they once were, just a giant liability. People moving out of the state: terrible air quality: homes lost to fires. Does California just need to start looking like Kansas to survive ?

Was knocked to the ground by a tanker drop of retardant when our crew got cut off by a flare-up on a pine plantation fire that we were mopping-up on in SE OK. We were normally timber fallers working on a Weyco company crew. This mop-up task was normally easy money, all we had to do was patrol the firebreaks and cut down snags and put out small spot. We got trapped by a sudden wind change. Thats when it got real. Fortunately a bomber flying out of Ft Smith AR was just arriving on scene and we managed to get him to divert and drop his load on our position. He was accurate I'll give him that. The drop opened up a very narrow corridor for us to escape. Seems like we lost a dozer on that fire. The retardant was dyed pink so we were all pink until we got a chance to wash down. Remember right thew retardant was ammonium or calcium phosphate.

what is the point of having tankers that need so much time to refuel and get water and not get a buttload of canadair's and air tractors? and a shitload of skycranes with the firefighting module?

    • @malcolm20091000

I hear ya. Google says there are about 40 active skycranes in the world. If they could all come to California right now, it would still be a pretty small shitload. I'd like to see some big ass pumps in Mono and Honey and Tahoe lakes with miles of pipe/hoses and big booster pumps along the way. Just dreaming, tho, they probably wouldnt do much good except locally.

Greetings from Ireland. These kind of fires simply never happen here (not enough forest and always far too wet!). I do wonder though if these methods of controlling fires are somewhat futile? Would it not make more sense just to make sure there are wide firebreaks surrounding all the population centres?

  • @gregjohnson2073

    • @jsullivan9238

The fire can easily jump the highway and head out into the grasslands. If you think this fire in the forest has been moving fast, you will be shocked at how much faster it travels out on the flats.
