Praying for peace for these three soul's families and friends. I hope the Australian government will manage the forest better and remove brush and build fire lines to better control spread. Whatever they thought they were protecting went up in smoke. What a shame.

Thank you Juan. Down here in Australia the whole nation is in mourning for our American brothers who have come down here to help us in our worst national disaster since European settlement. Since September 2019, 60% of all the forests down our eastern states have burned. Thats now 12 million hectares, roughly the size of England.
The C130 crew was the most experienced of the Coulson contingent down here and the First Officer had over 4000 hours C130 flight experience. The bird dog lead plane was ahead of the C130 on a run into a valley. They both entered the valley on the drop run and the bird dog reported on a red alert (Emergency radio call that overides all other radio traffic) that the C130 did not emerge from the valley. A huge fireball was seen when they looked back, and from first reports the wreckage only consists of small pieces of the plane. There was no report of the crew declaring an emergency, so its probable that the accident was sudden, devastating and occurred when the plane was close to the ground.
An RAAF P8 surveillance plane which was assisting in air operations control above the fire area was able to pinpoint the wreckage quickly but it took some time for first responders to get in as it was in the middle of an active fire.
Aviation is a highly regulated industry in Australia and we have some of the strictest safety standards in the world. The NSW Rural Fire Service is a NSW government agency and it and the military control air operations in fire zones. Many of the air controllers here are from the US, Canada and New Zealand and are here to assist us and are the most experienced in the world. The ATSB will conduct a full investigation. The NSW RFS have arranged for a Coulson team and the families of the crew to be brought down here immediately.

Sorry, but this is absolutely NOT the worst disaster since settlement. That honour goes to the fires that began on Feb 7, 2009, which came to be known as the Black Saturday fires. These fires are also not as bad as Black Friday 1039, or several fires in the 1800s. Black Saturday, however, cost 173 souls their lives, and hospitalized more than 700. You need to get away from Mainstream Media and do some real research.

Thank you. One issue at hand is the "Global warming" scam that the gov. used to stop strategic burns. This is obviously the cause of uncontrolled fires now. Too much fuel and arsons.

    • @Markle2k
      @Markle2k 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MikeJones-rk1un Please stop with the nonsense. Nobody is using global warming as an excuse to stop prescribed burns. That's a lie that was started over a decade ago, rather callously to leverage wildfires for a political position. You can't do prescribed burns if the weather conditions are right. A managed burn can quickly get out of control.

    • @daffidavit
      @daffidavit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MikeJones-rk1un Dear Mike M. Thanks for a word of reason. Nobody should blame these condition of "HUMAN CAUSED" global warming. The Earth's weather is constantly changing. It is impossible for the Earth's weather to remain constant. We are now in the middle of a slight warming condition while in the middle of a general Global continuing "Ice Age". We exist because the "Ice Age" has had a temporary lapse in its cooling cycle and has allowed humans to flourish. Only the Creator of our Universe knows how long our present period of "abeyance" will last before we go into another Ice age. But since our world is now in a position that it is in, we must respect it and live in it while not causing any further discruction. Thus if the ground is very dry causing the forests to be dry, we must be extra careful to not allow fires to by created by the human condition.
But if you look at "Google Earth" and plug in "forest fires" and "lightning" you will note that most fires that exist on our Earth presently are primarily caused by "lightning" not by people tossing out cigarettes. Yes, people are careless. But lightning bolts are natural phenomenon that nobody can control. Almost all of the forest fires caused on our planet are due to lightning. If you do not wish to believe me, don't. But just go to Google Earth and plug in "forest fires". You will note that lightning is by far the greatest cause of forest fires on our planet. It's a fact, not an opinion. See it for yourselves on "Google Earth".

Juan, thank you for this video and your obvious sadness over the crash. As others have said, Australians are devastated by this event. We really appreciate the support we have received from the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and other countries in fighting these fires. Nobody should have to pay with their lives in a fight against bushfires. I live in Canberra, and the battle against this particular fire is partly to defend Canberra, Australia's federal capital. If the winds that day had been from the south instead of the north, those fires would have been racing toward Canberra. I just want to mention a few things. The forests in Australia are not a single species. There's thousands of species of Eucalyptus trees here, and the land is so dry after years of drought that
even rainforests are burning, which are normally too wet to burn. The forests in highest peaks of the Snowy Mountains are mostly Snow Gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora) which die from fires. Anyway, your comment was accurate if you say one family of trees rather than one species. The fires in Eastern Australia have been burning from Adelaide to central Queensland, and there's a huge variety of forests, but most are dry eucalypt forests. While the towns are mostly separated from the forests, a lot of the houses which have been lost were surrounded by forest. However, a lot were not. The fires have also burned through grassland. Yesterday I has to evacuate my workplace while a fire raced through grassy farmland in Canberra. A lot of farmland has burned elsewhere. In terms of the accident itself, the area where it occurred is mountainous although nothing like the Sierra. With winds gusting to over 80kmh in Canberra, the gusts were probably worse in the fire zone. The conditions were really dangerous. It's possible that the aircraft flew into a downdraft that it was impossible to recover from. Again, we appreciate the support of the crews from overseas and their bravery. It's tragic that these three men paid with their lives. :(

Hi Juan, an Aussie here, two points in addition to your article.
1 Fuel, Eucalyptus trees have a very high oil content, they don't just burn they explode in flames
2 Fatigue, this aircraft had completed over 130 missions on this deployment in around 6 weeks. With 4 hours transit time plus on site time this air craft and crews were booking serious hours.
Not making any suggestions, just adding some more detail

🇦🇺 We Aussies are very grateful for these tankers which do fantastic work and we are saddened by this tragedy. These aviators come every fire season and through their great skill help protect us. Thank-you.
One of the main reasons for the 'lack of forest management' is that with changed weather patterns fire services have fewer days to conduct control burns safely. Near where I live it took 2 years to get the cool and calm conditions to do a safe control burn in a nearby bush reserve. This is almost certainly an effect of climate change. Indigenous Australians traditionally used 'cool burns' (low energy) to control the undergrowth but in many places this is probably now insufficient to reduce the undergrowth enough.

My fire science professor was the lead guy in the invention of the Firescope program in California. Former Chief of L.A. County fire department, and about 20 years ago he told us that the forest fires were getting worse and worse largely because of "smokey the bear". He said that agencies were so successful in preventing the smaller fires, that would burn a bit, and burn up the fuel every few years, that the fuel just piled up and up and while we have less frequent fires, when we do have them, they're apocalyptic in nature due to sheer fuel load. He was very worried about the future, and here we are. So few people know about this aspect of it.

The fundamental cause of that is that governments are allowing people to build IN THE FIRE ZONES. Knock it off. As a young guy back in the late 60s, I spent a year in Prescott, Arizona. "Prescott in the Pines". That was true, lots of houses surrounded by tall trees on the outside of town, on the Skull Valley side. Beautiful, smelled good, privacy. But about a decade ago, as I recall, there was a devastating fire. It would have been a bummer and covered the town with ash and made it hard to breathe for a few days, but the existence of all those homes made it into a human tragedy.

The Royal Commission recommended specific numbers of planned burns; the government decided a year or two ago that they would report using this percentage basis. How many burns were actually performed?

    Yesterday
We here in Australia are just stunned. The flying conditions there can be very difficult in that area I’ve flown 30 yrs there and feel little broken today very little chance for soft landing there were 2 airports very close to them but obviously no use to them.
To loose the 3 souls yesterday with NW gales pushing the out of control fires over 800,000 acres towards several coastal towns their loss to their families and the community here is devastating All aircraft were grounded the conditions today are expected 40 degrees NW gales and dust storms with 150 kilometres of fire front heading SE toward the townships. If you’re into praying maybe say a little one quickly those towns will need it. 😱
The conditions today of eased Significantly.
Some eye witness have said they believe it may have been off fire. This is unsubstantiated.

Eucalyptus would be similar to Jeffery Pine and Gray Pine here in the sierras in the way that it burns, from my understanding. Eucalyptus would also be similar to forests that have been struck and killed by the bark beetle along with what you mentioned about poor and ineffective management.

5:40 Thank God someone is able to speak out about the lack of forest management (as you call it over there). Here in Aus we have a totally ludicrous situation where all cattle are removed from the High Country. These cattle have grazed the High Country for generations and before that our native Aussies have done the cool burns for thousands of years reducing the fuel load.
Any decent fire fighter knows that you don't get a "Crowning Fire" without the fuel on the ground.
We are now governed by Uni students who wouldn't know shit from clay and have never lived in the bush or fought a bushfire.

@Champion, I think we need to leave the politics out. It is no good doing a control burn on 35ºC day with a 50kn wind blowing and the trouble is getting a suitable run of weather to make such burns possible is getting less and less likely. This is a result of climate change. Cool burns are great and I agree with your comments there and maybe the cattle should be back in the high country, but these decisions should made in consultation with people who know what they are talking about. This includes fire-fighters, farmers, environmental scientists but not politicians in my opinion. It's the politicians job to listen and to become educated.

The last control burn near my home was delayed for over two years because there was not a suitable weather window. Either too hot, too windy or too cold or wet. It's getting harder and harder to complete planned burns. Anyway I really think the focus should be on those poor blokes who died doing a difficult job in difficult conditions.

Just a couple of other points to add as someone that lives close to the crash site.
The C-130's have also been refuelling and reloading retardant in Albury, which also has a decent military presence and ability to do C-130 turnarounds.
The 737's have also been operating out of Canberra as they also have Jet A1 fuel and an experienced 737 maintenence facility via one of the airlines that sub contract out to the RAAF 737 BBJ fleet that is based out of Canberra.I'm assuming there is some sort of retardant facility in both Canberra and Alubry, probably a portable system or something similar.
I haven't seen any of the fixed wing bombers using Nowra, but the bird dogs and helicopters have been.
Where the C-130 that crashed was operating is known for very nasty turbulence in the prevailing NW winds of that day as it comes over the mountains. The NW winds that feed into SE Australia are typically hot and gusty, much like California's Santa Ana style winds.
There is a very active gliding community that has it's own airfield north of Cooma, so that gives you an idea of the area's ability to create heat and lift.

By the way, I’m a total “AV-geek”, I’m a businessman living just “down the hill” in Roseville, CA, and I spend much of my time flying around the country and world on endless business trips. When you get your license back there is nothing that I would love more than to ride my motorcycle up the hill to Nevada City and take a ride with you in “The Mighty Luscombe”.
