    Those flyboys saved my mountain property in Northern Utah two years ago. Fire was coming over the ridge and down the mountain right above it and those guys showed up and stopped it cold. Thought my property was going to be gone, but nope. Retardant from the planes and water drops from the helos saved it all. These folks are heroes in my book.

    I worked with, drank with, argued with, and was administratively saved by Mike over about decade back in the day. Good to see he is healthy and appears happy. One of those "I didn't know he was still alive" moments. Thanks Juan

    This Mike Lynn interview is one of the best I've ever seen. His ideas make sense. This guy is so good at explaining things that I did not skip through any of it. Thanks Juan, very few interviewers let guys like this talk and only cut in to add information and context for the audience.

    As an ex Australian fire fighter, I worry that all the resources are pushed towards solely aerial fire fighting, and the extra pressure applied to you guys to do the work, thank you for this great insite to how it all works as has come about, this gives me an even greater appreciation of what you guys have to do, Well done and thanks

    Wow that was great! Con Air is lucky to have this man, very wise, glad he has come out of retirement to enjoy his aviation passion and pass along his experience and insight to no doubt make aerial fire fighting safer and therefore save lives. Love Spokane spent a lot of time there in the 60`s + 70`s ,they used to call the area "panorama land"

    Another great interview with a externally qualified pilot in his expertise. I’m surprised they didn’t look for crews from the Navy P-3 community. CRM was the standard for operations going back to the early 70’s. Pilot fly’s heading and altitude and makes the drop, flight engineer controls airspeed with power levers and copilot sets flaps and backs up all operations. Then we dropped all of our weapons. We did have a full crew in the tube but they we along for the ride! Lol

    Thank you - very much looking forward to the next in this series. DC-10 Tanker 912 is still in Australia and in Canberra. I’ve seen it a few times in February and March. Was fortunate today to see it closer up during taxi, and take-off and land! 👏🏻 It was doing low-altitude manoeuvres with a C525. The fires are all out here in south-eastern Australia thanks to decent rainfalls. 💦 12:25 The Q400MR - would love to see these operating. The description here was well explained for the uninitiated like myself. Thank you to all aerial firefighters for your service in Australia during 2019/2020. 🔥

    During this forced hiatus from your accustomed flight schedule, you have reinforced other skills, gained experience, made such good use of existing and new contacts, and done some equipment acquisition. When you return to flight (may it be soon!), all that you have acquired will remain as a resource for you going forward.
    It's been a pleasure to sit in on all that you present. So very well done.

    That was a great interview! I am looking forward to the rest of the coverage of the conference. Firefighters of any type are heroes, but those who fly, they indeed are a rare and special breed. So, too are the planes that they fly. The De Havilland Canada DHC-8 Q400 your friend mentioned is a direct descendant of the famous bush planes the DHC-3 Beaver and the DHC-3 Otter. I am very happy that Viking Air bought all the type certificates from Bombardier where they had languished for decades when the need for fire fighting aircraft has been growing. Viking also bought the type certificates for the Canadair CL-215, and CL-415 from Bombardier. They recently announced the latest upgrade to that series, the CL-515, which will help Viking become one of the powerhouses of fighter fighting aircraft today.

    • @bruceavis1610
      @bruceavis1610 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, as an AME I have heard that Viking is a very well managed company and their employees love working there.

    • @FarrellMcGovern
      @FarrellMcGovern 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bruceavis1610 I am glad to hear that. Bombardier made the classic mistake of growing too fast, and too diversified, and now, they almost don't exist anymore. Their founder invented the Ski-Doo...but building airplanes and subway cars and the like was too many areas of expertise to keep track of. Viking has some of the crown jewels of Canadian Aviation history, and I wish them all the luck and success in the world.

    Wonderful interview ... we can feel the love! I've spoken with some Canadians who claim that the red fire retardant is affecting their ground water ... any info on a change to the formula and materials?

    • @JeffCounsil-rp4qv
      @JeffCounsil-rp4qv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's not just a "Canadian" concern. Steps have been taken to try and only use the retardant, which is basically a fertilizer mixture, in areas away from known waterways, or to be used when people are in danger. The red dye is for visibility so a pilot can see where it has been, or has not been dropped. The mixtures don't vary much from one another and so far, nothing else has been found to work better, or have any lesser consequential effects. But people have to realize that sometimes there is not much choice. It's either slow the fire so ground crews can come in to battle the fire, or lose communities and possibly people's lives. Nothing is perfect, but it beats being burned to death.

    Great video as usual, Juan, but as a kind of side note, I found some of those photos of former aircraft both wrecked and ready to be fascenating. I want to know more! There's probably several books could be written, or You Tube videos about who they were, where they found the aircraft, what mods they did to them, and what caused their demise. You are a part of a very rich heritage of aviation that has moved on to deal with very dynamic situations with SOP's. Keep bringing it on!

    I'm surprised he didn't mention the structural performance capabilities of the Q-400 as represented by the sad event where a ground crewman took one for a joyride in Seattle and did a looping-barrel roll with a diving pullout.

    This is really great Juan. Good report! Appreciate hearing it from the folks doing the heavy lifting! Did you fly a Baron as a lead? Can't wait for the next episode(s)... BTW the old photos of the early days were really interesting--Avengers and a Black Widow! Wow!
