S4E2 Washington State Gold Mining - Prospecting the Naches River with Pete

  • This is a return trip to the Naches River and I found some time for prospecting. I finally find some, but not until the last hours of the last day! The key is to keep checking those places that you suspect might have some, but more importantly - listen to others when they share what they know!

    Pete, I have a faster bucket classifier. Home made from expanded metal. I made a cylinder with expanded metal sides and bottoms. Put it in the bucket, shovel it nearly full, shake and twist, in 10 seconds it's done. Throw out large gravel and go again. Wet or dry. Wayne in Pullman, WA

    I fished off those rocks just a couple weeks ago! Hahaha! I live in Yakima, but I spend most of my days on the Upper Naches, Little Naches, American and Teanaway rivers fishing and prospecting. Found some nice placer flakes just messing around with my pan and crevice tool two days ago near Cle Elum. We should go prospecting together some time. I could learn a great deal from you, as I have from some of your videos. Thank you for sharing Pete. Tony T.

    If a hole is filled in perfectly you might waste your time digging there. Nice to see some slight evidence so you can avoid that spot. Winter will do the rest.

    What sluice are you using. I need one that size. Been looking at the A. MacKirks. Also a big thanks on sharing your knowledge!

      That's the smallest one that Angus McKirk makes. I think they call it the prospector or explorer. It's 18" long and about 9" wide - pretty small, but it works well for just checking things out. Thanks for your comment!

    Howdy,I just found your channel as I'm also a Washington resident and trying to figure out to get out gold prospecting. I have wanted to for years now and my wife loves the outdoors. I live in lake Stevens (just east of Everett).have a ton of rivers near by,just dont know where its would be best to start.
    Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    great video... I noticed that you're using that Garrett 14" pan.. have you tried the new 14" Garrett pan? its called the gold trap and it has a wider bottom.. the old one has a 6" bottom and the new one is 7 1/4... that's about all I use now because it's not that heavy, like the. super pan.. Lol.. that pan will wear you out quick

      The big pans are just too much. I like the original that I got 40 years ago, but everything has changed. I use the super sluice for dry panning because I can process the material a little faster. Decisions! Decisions! LOL Thanks for your comment!

    • @Thebald1
      @Thebald1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dennis Petersen the new 14" pan has a big bottom and it's not heavy.. but I'm like you when it comes to a certain pan because I still use the one that I got years ago as well.. its only 12".. but when it comes to fast panning for testing I like the new one way better...

    Good start-to-finish demo....select location, dig, classify, sluice, pan.....had there been flakes, snuffer bottle sucks them up...re-pan...dry...save in vial.

      @dennispetersen1162  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks John! Yeah - the technique is pretty simple, but If you follow the method, and find some shiny, it will get you back to the same spot with bigger equipment. Prospecting isn't always finding, but it is a process. Thanks for your comments!

    Thanks for all the videos Dennis. The family and I are trying to get into doing some recreational mining in Washington state. While we've only found a few flakes and some small garnets, we have enjoyed ourselves. I love watching your videos and they don't only show when you find gold, they show the process, and even when you don't find any. Would love to run into you in the field someday! We are over in Arlington,WA. But we have been trying to figure out who to talk to to be able to play around in a creek over near the blewett pass/liberty area, on a weekend trip, without knowing private land from public, I don't feel like getting shot at!

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point! Most of the miners you run into are small scale miners rather than recreational. Joining a club is a good way to find out where and how to prospect for gold. Most of the clubs do a pretty good job introducing new folks to our business. There was a miners rendezvous in Liberty WA this last weekend would have been a good opportunity to meet others. Just got back from there myself. Start with downloading a copy of WDFW Fish and Gold Pamphlet, read it and enjoy! Good choices for clubs are WPMA, Bedrock, NAMA, etc. - just search online - most of them have websites.

    Thanks for hitting on the importance of filling up your holes,,,, that is the main reason water gets closed...

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree that that is part of the problem, but the bigger issue a lack of small scale miner participation in the decision making process. We all need to work more closely together.

    There's a place in Antarctic that I been to where the gold is everywhere. Nuggets the size of Pellets everywhere with some of them being the size of Peas or shelled Peanuts. When the land there gets snow locked it becomes impossible to do any mining. When the ice and snow get thawed to more tolerable levels you can scoot most of the ice and snow off the surface of the land with much hard work and get to the dirt and soil beneath it. Antarctica is one of the last great places that remains untouched by prospectors, and nations everywhere on the Earth have an agreement to ban travel there unless it is for science. I will be going back someday if all goes well. I don't care what ban there is I am not going to let treaties or bans stop me from getting my hands on that gold. The only other place to have unmined gold would be the Sahara Desert but I'm not sure you can get to any gold that is there, because it is sand locked. Sand so thick that it literally keeps filling any hole you dig that would get you to the harder soil beneath where the gold is at. If you could get underneath the sand and mine for gold, I am 99% sure you would come across lots of gold sand and nuggets because there are old river beds under many areas of the Sahara Desert, but its anyone's guess as to how much sand is on top of the gold bearing land. I'm sure it does have many extinct rivers that once flowed there. One estimate gives the average depth of the sand to be approximately 150 metres while the top of the dunes can reach a height of 320 meters from the bedrock (170-180 m high measured from ‘sand-level’). Now that is a helluva lot of sand and deep too.

    I’ve been thinking about trying Naches River out recently. I like your videos. You explain everything really well, and I appreciate that as I don’t have a whole lot of experience and I am still gathering equipment.

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just make sure that do your homework to locate areas that are either not claimed, free to mineral entry, and that you get permission to prospect there. The area shown in the video is on a federal mining claim and is not open to casual entry. You can join the club that owns it and have full access.

    • @SkySprice
      @SkySprice 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dennis Petersen Yeah. I appreciate it :) Last time I went fishing I saw claim signs. There was a guy there panning and I asked him about it he said he was part of some club based out of Puyallup. I’ve been considering joining

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those claims belong to Bedrock Prospectors Club from Puyallup, WA. you can access membership info at www.bedrockprospectors.org

    • @SkySprice
      @SkySprice 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dennis Petersen thank you very much! The guy I met told me I could join by going to their meeting but a trip to Puyallup from Tri-Cities is hard to justify lol. Thanks for the link :)

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do it via snail mail and you don't really need to attend meetings (how boring!), but once a member you an work at the claims.

  • @robertzachow2929
    @robertzachow2929 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    are there any public panning sites in washington or do you need to have a claim?

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are lots of places to pan - some are on DNR land and some is on USFS forest land. You need to follow the rules as stated in the WDFW Fish and Gold Pamphlet, but generally you can pan on any public land that has not or cannot be claimed.
