    Hi Matt, thank you so much for sharing this info to us Washington prospectors/miners. Since now there is no motorized equipment allowed, we are left with a metal detector, river sluice and a pan. If you had to work an area outside of the water with that equipment and like finding lots of fine gold, where would you go at in this video? Thank you in advance, heading there this coming weekend.

      John Baker, Norm Hill and I trudged across the road and to the base of those small hill/mountains you see, and found fine gold there (portable scope sized stuff). If you've got equipment for the beach it might do the trick. Good luck.

    I live in oroville Washington and appreciate the information. I pan quite a bit along the similkameen river. I am in my second season of panning so I am still an amateur. Yet last summer, my first season, I panned 3.5 grams of placer gold. This season i have just over 2 grams so far but am set to beat last seasons weigh in. Due to research and application, I have recently found a paystreak of larger flakes and occasional picker or specimen. The specimens here are gold with white quartz, clear quartz crystals and darker stone at times. Really beautiful pieces. The paystreak I am currently on is a gravel flat that catches a lot of heavy material during flood waters. So it is just now accessable again. I have high hopes of what it may produce. If you are willing, I would love your advice on how deep to dig. I feel the larger gold is in older and undisturbed layers of settled river bed....

    • @mattmattsongold
      @mattmattsongold  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're doing good - keep it up! There is no depth to dig (I never found a bottom to many of those bars with a dredge) just try to stay in the streak and make notes (mental or actual) if the gold is increasing or decreasing and follow the pay left right and down as deep as you can. (If you get to the point of using supplied air - don't dig rabbit holes to get killed in - taper your hole for every one foot down 4 feet back minimum) You and the rest here in the comments section are coming up with excellent results on par with what we were doing in our time - it's good hear.

    Thanks for the guarded inside information on Oroville. I always heard it was all fines they were getting up that way. Was I ever wrong about that. Washington still requires the Gold and Fish guidebook. They are much kinder to miners than my state of Oregon or California. They seem to honor the 1874. Law more even though they are a deep blue state because of the expansive urban areas.

Go through as many of these videos as you can and learn to find gold without the detector (build a sluice - run gravel through it from the target areas you learn about). Hello Matt. I love the videos! I have a question for you? Do you happen to know other places in North Eastern Washington areas FOR NUGGETS?

    • @mattmattsongold
      @mattmattsongold  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't - Oroville was the one place I had direct knowledge of and worked. The reason it has large nuggets is the source is a few miles upstream (Canada) and the river isn't violent like others feeding Wa. State from the West. If I had've had more lifetime, I would had taken a cue from that and explored more of the streams that come in over the border and are reasonably close to Oroville and have enough pressure to feed the larger rivers. They could move nuggets. My exploring days are done - hope you have some great adventures chasing those nuggets!

      @@mattmattsongold Thanks so much Matt for responding! That helps me a lot! I'm around 2hrs away and since you said that. Then I'm going to be looking for high benches above that river. I'm in Orient Washington that's why I asked you if you had more info over here. But I will research more time over on that section of forest land. Do you honestly think there is still 1 Grammer's out there? I really hope so I bought a Gold bug pro to go looking. Have a awesome day and thanks again for your knowledge and wisdom!

      @@jasonyork4418 : Absolutely there's big nuggets there (always will be). You might want to look for old dredge piles as well and work very tops of those piles. The bigger the pile the better - the river is now upside down (the top of the pile was once the bottom of the river) a lot of nuggets went right out on the pile. A GB is great for that type of work and you should score well. Good luck!

      @@mattmattsongold Thanks again Matt. Would those dredge piles be seen from Google Earth? Or would you know around what areas that would have dredge piles? I'm a greenhorn and I haven't found anything yet! My wife thinks I'm crazy and just laughs and says I'm wasting my time. I truly believe I have what it takes to find gold and believe in myself. @@jasonyork4418 : yes - this is a dredge tailings pile from google (maps): www.google.com/maps/@48.9747815,-119.513038,76m/data=!3m1!1e3 -- hope that works - if not it is below Miner's Flat & Ellemeham Draw on the S. side of the Similkameen River (zoom in). Once you see that you can ID any on any river readily. You might want to look at some of the river names near you and pull up the history of gold dredging to find easier tailings pile to work at first. There have been even seasoned prospectors who went to the Similkameen first and were overwhelmed (and I understand it). It is huge rocks, tailings piles & country - Alaska has nothing on it (except cold). My advice would be learn the detector near you first and then take a whack at it (very dangerous on the tops of those piles since the ground is loose). Good luck!

      Thanks Matt. I live in Florida. South Carolina is intriguing, due the ability to access waterways in gold bearing areas of the state. The laws in South Carolina regarding waterways, are definitely more accommodating than Georgia. I believe your teachings will be of great value to those of us who are willing to learn and work hard. Stay safe.

      Thanks for putting that info out there so people know. Local knowledge is priceless and yes, that's an incredibly large area. Don't know if you were there at the time but we found gold (albeit small flakes) all the way through that campground in Oroville - under the bridge, and beyond (about 1/4 mile), checking with sluices, pans and nothing more. I sure don't feel like the man anymore - an airplane crash in 1980 is sure catching up to me now. Hope you do well working a spot this season!

    I wonder if that is designated critical fish habitat, if so then it's off limits to dredging, but it does seem your idea might not require a dredge.

      A waterproof metal detector is really what is needed (that Garrett is w.p. to 10 feet) - get a hit, break it out & check it, move on to the next hit. Another way is to mark all the hits with steak skewers, and come back and dig the hits out. It's hard work, and an all or nothing type game (but what a game!)

    Great information, as usual Matt! Yes, we still have the Gold and Fish pamphlet but rivers here have certain months and dates we can do any prospecting on at all (even panning). The Similkameen River has three sections and each has it's own open months.
    Don't take a chance on the dates! It's fine to smash business windows, in Washington State and curse the police but don't muddy the water a day early or a day late!
    This is from June 2020 so, dates may have changed a bit. Just call the Game and Fish for update. We have to fight for every little bit of freedom left in this libstate...good thing is Central and Eastern Washington is red.
    Mouth to Enloe Dam - July 1 to August 31
    Enloe dam to Palmer Creek - June 1 to October 31
    Upstream of Palmer Creek July 1 to October 31
