    Keep in mind I am comparing the free version of imag-r here, which is what most folks use. Yes, you pay for the full version and get lots more function, but why would you want to pay for software when you already have great photo software already built into Lightburn??

    Great video. I'm not sure if it is different for a Diode, but for C02, I do not resize the image to test. Instead, I crop the image to some detail, like a face. I then run the burn tests on that small portion of the larger image. This way the results I see from the tests will exactly match the results I get when I run the full image. When resizing the image to run the tests, you would be making all the dots from the image smaller, or each dot you burn is now covering a larger portion of the test image, and not representative of the final output. :)

    Great info.
    For anyone wanting to take pics to use, (most phones can do this as digital cameras do). shoot your photo (and edit the photo) in .RAW format. This will (basically) separate all tones into individual editable areas. This will enable you to (only) brighten the darkest areas and take down the highlights (and midtones) without affecting the whole photo.
    Hope this helps somewhat.
    Cheers

  • @youmbgtube
    @youmbgtube ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very informative video. I’m interested in your comments about better results with “out of focus.” I like etching tiles with NWT method. I saw a video by Nicky Norton on how to focus. He took a black aluminum business card and set the laser at low power and slowly lowered the laser until you could see it twinkle - or start to burn the card. I did this but then thought what about start low and move the laser up. The difference in the two is about 3-4mm so I have used the average of the two. Might be interesting to run some tests.
    Also, I have an OLM3 10W. I (and others) have had no luck using spray paint with high levels of TiO2. This was very disappointing. I did find I can get pretty good results airbrushing TiO2 powder mixed with alcohol on the tile.

    • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy

      @@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Would love to see the paint you used, tile, paint technique, and etching parameters. I went through maybe 50 tiles and could never get dark blacks only brownish. Very helpful. One question, I often want to trace a photograph for the outline because it provides a much cleaner rendering on an engraving but often have issues with getting good lines in the photo to provide a good trace. Will the use of masking help with that, or will the masking edges become hard edges for the trace, thus providing false lines?

I am trying to decide what it will take to purchase a JTech Photonics laser kit for my XCarve. Also, would you say that going bigger is better? They have a 24 w with an air assist that is not that much more expensive than their 14 w or 7 w. I am looking into trying to do trophies and plaques as well as hobby art. It's a program called Xara Photo & Graphic Designer. Originally a spin off of and designed by Corel. I believe Magix Software sells it today and it's cheap, a one-time purchase.

    Yes, there are stupid questions! I am at home, playing around with Lightburn. I opened a .jpg file, selected Adjust image to Grayscale. It looks great, but when I Preview/Play everything shows Black. Do I have to be connected to the laser to preview? I wish I could post images here.

    • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
      @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Images preview all black. Zoom in if you want to see the image, but the preview is mainly to see the job and the layer priority, not images.

      @@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Oh my goodness. In Preview, I clicked on Shade According to Power and the image became visible. • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
      @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ignore the preview except for how the job will run. If you edit in another program, you have to double click the photo layer and turn on Pass-Through. Or you can just use the same editor in Lightburn by selecting the image, right clicking on it, and selecting Edit Image.

    I'm sorry Rich, I do enjoy your videos but when you use ImagR to resize an image while leaving the DPI set to 72 and then compare it to an image in Lightburn of 396 DPI it annoys me. Please compare apples to apples, not mellons. Appart from that keep up the good work.

    • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
      @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't really comparing the two image qualities Paul. I was just comparing the free version to Lightburn's built in image processor and how you can save time with presets.

    I love your vids, but this time I think this is an unfair comparison and more your lack of understanding Imagr? I have the paid DT version and there are 10 diff algorithms that are way better than LB.
    and I find it has way more control and better tools to optimize a photo. Also their tools program has removed backgrounds works very well among other great tools.

    • @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
      @TheLouisianaHobbyGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was comparing the free version, which most folks use. I do understand that it has a paid version with more functions, but I would say that calling them way better without learning Lightburn is also biased as well. Neither software will produce quality photos without actual testing and adjustments, which was the focus of this video.
