Watched your tutorial and spent last 9 hours trying to get the Brandmotion camera to work - same camera as what you installed. At the end of this debacle, the rear view camera will turn on for only 30 seconds and then starts flickering and cuts out. Have tried any and every troubleshooting idea we could find or think of. Has anyone ever contacted you with the same problem. My buddy says it is a power issue (where we cut into the cigarette lighter / charging port) but we don't know. One thing we did different was spliced the wires together copper on copper and covered with electrical tape. Very solid splice job, but clueless. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
In speaking with the company on installation, I got some advice to consider. Flash the vehicle prior to the install and put in reverse to confirm you get a blank/static screen - confirm flash module works prior to doing a full install. Lastly, they suggested to remove the dash and connect the system to the monitor and power source (use taps so you can easily disconnect post this test). Now put in reverse and confirm all works. If it does then complete a full install. It is rare, but happens, where a full install is done and the system has a failure and needs to be returned - painful having to remove everything.
This was an outstanding video. did the install with very little effort. Now for the programming, I couldn't get myself to buy the GenieOBD at $200 for a 1-time use so I'm taking my 2015 Jeep to the dealer tomorrow morning who will do the flash for $99 plus tax.
Awesome, you answered my question. Just bought a 2015 Jeep Sahara. Was surprised it didn't have a backup camera. I was worried I'd have to replace to console unit in order to have this feature or have an additional screen floating around the dash. Looks like I have another weekend project in my future. Thanks!
I have watched many of these, and this is a good one. I just ordered a camera kit for a 2017 Sahara wrangler unlimited. What strikes me as odd that no one did a power up test prior to running the wires, but I suspect the program step may prevent this test. I like how he MacGyver’ed the metal scraper with painters tape. I also wish these guys would do a layout of all the parts and tools used. I’ll update if successful but will hide in shame if I am not!
Fascinating, listening to you guide the viewer thru the necessary steps. I think I would have tested the whole thing out before buttoning up any part of the install. Well done, geo!
That is an excellent suggestion Tom. I guess after 30 years of electrical construction I have enough faith in my abilities. It worked out for the best!
Awesome! Thanks for uploading this! I just bought my wife a 2016 Wrangler and was very disappointed to learn that it did not come with the backup camera. I never thought this aftermarket product even existed! I'll definitely be installing one in hers now and she will be very pleased! You rock! By the way, the last part where you waved into the camera was hilarious. Lol
Thanks Greg, I'm glad I was able to help you out on this one. The wave at the end was an afterthought, but turned out pretty cool I think. Good luck with the install.
Thanks geofatboy! I appreciate your help on this one! You're right, the instructions were absolutely unreadable! I most definitely could not have successfully installed this backup camera without your help!
Thank you so much! It took me all afternoon but with your video, it works great! I had a few differences with my 2017 Wrangler such as my dash board came apart differently and the the ignition wire was on the opposite side. My ignition lighter is on the right side and the always on lighter is in the center console. I couldn’t have done it without your video. The directions it came with were horrible!
Brother that was a fantastic video. Thank you for taking the time to do this.... Knocked it out quickly because of this video for my 2011 JK. You ROCK!

All the best in the New Year, It is nice to see a professional do a task so well as a electrician your other job before starting your business with Shavenation and in a good timely manner. If you ever change careers you would make a excellent instructor in what ever, very well done!
Great video Geo! I have a factory backup camera and a camera under my right side mirror. Called Honda Lane Watch, I really like it. Some DIY cameras use a BT transmitter for easier installation, but the way you did it is probably best.
Great video! I have a question… How does the system know when you have selected Reverse gear? Is it done in the final step when you install the software through the OBD port?
Hi Raoul. If you take on the task step by step and follow along, its not too difficult, it takes a bit of time though. Best part is every time you hit reverse and see behind you, you are reminded that you did it yourself :)
. That's so cool. I had no idea that one could have a backup camera display it's image on the radio screen. That's brilliant! Now u may have to do a shaving video on the backup cam.
Really well-done video! I'm going to need to wire mine in reverse- from front to back. Having a touch screen radio installed at BB, and installer has agreed that if I supply a backup camera, he's willing to go ahead and plug it in and wire it as far as the glove box. But that he's only got a window of time enough for the radio and not enough to run it thru the carpet, out the back gate, etc. Question is, since I'm doing this in reverse, where would you recommend I plan to tuck away the excess wiring? Inside the back gate before it pops out thru the spare? Or guesstimate how much may be extra and sort of bird-nest it behind the glove box? The second option seems risky since I could wind up with not enough wire to make it all the way out the back. But I don't know if it's possible, either, to leave any excess inside the back gate. Thanks for any info.
Hi Ryan, You will be getting the easy part of the job! Tuck the extra wire inside the rear 1/4 panel once you remove the grey felt covering. This will get you close enough to the rear camera to see how much wire you need, and the wiring will be inside the vehicle. Lots of room in that area!
Finished the install this morning. I do like the capability to see what is behind me. My only issue and maybe it is just my camera is that the back up lines are no way close to the width that the Jeep is. The distance is good but the width is way off. Anyone else notice this or is this just my system, 15JK unlimited. Thanks for the install vid used it a lot.
Great question! I've since sold this vehicle and I can't remember for sure, but I think the music still played while in reverse. I always lower the volume to zero when reversing so I can hear if anyone's back there screaming...
Thinking about buying this camera and hooking up to the factory radio. I purchased the Veepeak OBDCheck BLE OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner Car and JScan App for my Android. There's an option in the app to Enable backup camera. Is that what the honk essentially does? Trying to buy the aftermarket version which is a lot cheaper!
This explains why I installed my reverse camera in my oem REN radio and ain’t working 🤮 how do I get that obd2 updater tool without blowing 200 bucks on it? Can’t a dealership do that for me? I have everything done I just need that tool you used at the end that made the car honk twice ):
How were you able to buy the kit without that part? I wouldn't think they would sell it that way. Was it accidentally left out of the box? Maybe if you sweet talk your dealer they might do it for you. Around me they would probably charge $200 just to chirp it.
geofatboy I didn’t buy that kit. I bought a simple 30 dollar reverse cam kit off amazon then the 20.00 reverse cam harness for that radio... but now I can see why I had to spend the extra money.. that radio needed to be updated to accept that reverse signal. So stupid
What made you choose that particular brand? I have a unconnect as well...so did you use it because it is compatible with Unconnect? Thank You in advance
Hi Andrei-Thanks! I watched a 30 minute video covering the new Jeep. It has a lot of slick new features, for example, the soft top windows now slide in. One of my favorite features that you can't add on aftermarket would be a heated steering wheel. Great for these nasty Chicago winters. At over $40K the price is a deterrent for me.
Ouf....you need to no how it's work...Congrad...it's more than a gadget it a must to have.....I have a Mazda GX3 2018....it's come with and i like very much... Thank for this video!
