Fitting the starboard side capping rails and making Kevel Cleats ***EPISODE 36***

  • **EPISODE 35**
    In this episode it is time to fit the starboard side capping rails onto the boat for the final time, bedding them down on sikaflex and getting them bolted and screwed onto the bulwark planks, something i have been looking forward to doing for some time.
    I then realise i was slightly hasty fitting the capping rails as i still have a major task to complete, but not to worry it just makes the next task for the starboard bulwarks slightly more awkward but not impossible.
    Beginning with machining up some more oak to make some secondary stanchions to allow kevel cleats and some smaller cleats to be fitted to.
    As some of you know, we visited the Southampton boat show in the last episode, where i met with a few different companies to discuss some potential sponsorship.
    One of the companies i met with were EcoFlow.
    EcoFlow supply some of the leading portable power pack on the market, after a long discussion with some of the guys who represent the company they agreed to donate the Ecoflow Delta 2 power pack and 220W solar panel array to the project ans sponsor this video.

    Just to let you know Finn, how much I (and I am positive everyone else as well!) really enjoy (and appreciate) your videos and the great progress (with finesse) you always make. This from the early days of building your shed, which I have to say has got that great traditional boat and maritime feel in spades and not least a tradesman definitely in his "happy place". Hope you get out a few more times on your other "happy place" before the Autumn months (Storm Ciaran aside!) turn to winter. PS: Well done ECO-FLO for supporting our mate Finn - he is the real deal!

    Hi Finn. Great to see this project is still going strong!
    I had been into sailing for a long while before even the Tally Ho videos came along, but a combination of these projects inspired me to take the plunge and buy my own boat!
    It's turned into more of a project than I expected, so I didn't get to go sailing this year, but seeing these updates is one factor in keeping me motivated to put the work in!
    How did you find setting up the TH-cam side of things? I've kept a fair amount of footage of repairs, so have been considering doing something similar on my project, but so far the time commitment around a day job has been tricky!
    Looking forward to seeing you launch!

    • @knotfinnishedyet9170
      @knotfinnishedyet9170  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Andrew, great to hear from you, and awesome to hear they have inspired you to follow you own dream. That’s what it’s all about!
      To be honest it was made much easier by spending time working on Tally Ho and discussing my new venture on Leo’s channel on my last visit back in 2019. Where I had obtained a substantial following before I even produced my first video.
      4 years later and it is still a struggle to juggle a full time job, working on my boat and producing these video. As well as having a life also!
      But perseverance pays off in the end. We are getting there! And enjoying doing it makes the difference.

    Hello Finn,
    found your channel only today. Good work altogether. I would scrape the hull bare inside and outside and soak it in epoxy resin before going over with a primer so as to protect it against corrosion. Solar panels would also be handy to have aswell as a 24V system and a dedicated 24V truck alternator. Looking forward to the videos coming. Cheers!

    Bravo! Well done Finn, to camera delivery 100% better, you have a decent comparison in this vid between the intentional to camera delivery vs the incidental pieces, the incidental bits, you are clearly more focused on the lob so the delivery has a very dry tone compared to the prepared to camera pieces. Worth reviewing each vid for pointers, that Ashford (?) accent ain't gonna help, we of the cockney diaspora don't make public speakers!

      I also dislike the the brackets but being a ferrocrete hull there is not much other option. As in the build of the hull as the Ferro gets to deck level there is a metal plate on top of the sheer line encapsulated in cement that the beam shelf is then bolted through, so traditional timber heads would not be an option.
      I’d love to hear your suggestions though as they may need changing in the future.

    • @MikeAG333
      @MikeAG333 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@knotfinnishedyet9170 If you have to have brackets, then have bronze brackets which don't stick out athwartship, but which run fore-aft parallel to the line of the bulwarks. Doing this before making the bulwarks and capping rail would have allowed you to make your stanchions all the same size, rather than compensating for mis-placed brackets by varying the size of each stanchion...
      You could actually replace the stanchions like this, one by one, with the bulwarks and capping rail in place, albeit you'd have some fun joinery making the tenons into the capping rail.
