    Your Hungary 1997 drive in the Arrows has made you a legend, Mr Damon Hill. No one in a mid- field
    car has or will ever equal what you achieved.

    Superb interview. Always thoughtful, carefully considered, honest answers from Damon. A great champion and great man.

    The humility of Damon speaks volumes for the integrity of this man. To achieve what he did is a remarkable feat but he never once tried to pretend that he was better than he really was. Quite the opposite I would suggest.

    Damon was a guy I couldn’t stand when he raced for Williams but as the years went on I started to warm to him a lot and then after reading his book I become a full blown fan and I understand everything he went through during his time at Williams and his struggles with depression and I am amazed at what he was able to achieve a great driver and above all a great man

    Damon seems like a genuinely nice guy.
    He also had incredible skills in a car. He may not have been the dirty type formula 1 driver, but he sure knew how to handle the cars he drove.
    I vividly remember that race he did in the arrows on the Hungaroring, he was the mental winner of that race.

      I agree to a point... but you would have to say 94 was Senna's... and Shumi did get a rather harsh black flag for 'breaking formation' on the warm up lap... which then turned into a 3 race ban... It was almost as if F1 were trying to engineer a close finish?

    Damon Hill was my hero I still have the old VHS of the documentary, fight for Victory. Tonnes of people out want the soundtrack from that video. It was great and Damon was great in that year. I dictinctly remember my parents splitting up in '96 but the continium in my life in that year was how was Damon doing in the championship. :)

    Mr. Hill, you can be proud of your world champion ship, just like Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Jacques Villeneuve and Mika Häkkinen, because it happened in era, where it was more about racing on the track and about the drivers.
    I don't want to down rate champs like Fernando Alonso, Kimi Räikkönen, Lewis hamilton, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel. But it's so technical, regulated and political these days. It seems that the real old school racing is less important today.

    • @twillis449
      @twillis449 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are quite correct in your comments. These days the driver is merely the top of a pyramid with something like 120 engineers monitoring data points and telling the driver how and what to do. So why do we still have a driver's world championship? I don't know - the constructor's championship better reflects reality than does the driver's championship. But politics has always been there ....

    My elderly aunt has a large collection of Motor Sports magazine dating back to 1943. They were collected and kept in very good condition by her late husband who was an engineer and a car enthusiast. She doesn't want to keep them as she's looking to downsize her home. Would anyone know of anyone who might be interested? She's giving them away for free to anyone who's willing to pick them up at her home (she lives in north London), sending them via post is not practical as they are quite heavy and she's not able to manage it. If anyone is interested, please message me. Cheers!

    teach Damon to hold that mic close.

    Modern F1 like modern football: assemblage of money men without a distinct talent

  • @davidmacdonald1695
    @davidmacdonald1695 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Damon has always missed the point about '96 - he talks about "if I do a good enough job and win the title I'll keep my seat"...whilst conveniently ignoring the fact that in actual fact he didn't win the title in either '94 or '95. So he didn't keep his seat. Even in '96 it was a narrow victory over rookie Villeneuve courtesy of a wheel coming off in Italy and an issue in the first race which gave JV an engine problem. I find it a little fake for Hill to contrive surprise and dismay at the fact he wasn't kept on every time the question comes up. Either that or he is very considerable naive.

    • @patbassman8251
      @patbassman8251 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its well known that Damon was in fact faster than Villeneuve so why shouldn't he of kept his seat, It must of felt quite spiteful to hear through rumor two thirds way through his fight for the championship to hear he was getting the boot to an inferior driver.

    • @willgoodhand
      @willgoodhand ปีที่แล้ว

      The "issue" was Jacques powersliding over most of the infield and ripping the bottom out of the car causing himself an epic oil leak!!! JV was, as per Pat's comment below, almost comically slower than Damon but the car advantage spared him the embarrassment of being eight places back on the grid.
