One of the best ever, if not the best ever club talk show, thank you so much for inviting the legendary Gordon Murray! IMHO the greatest car designer and visionary not only in Formula 1, but in car design in general. The only objection I may have is, it was too short :) Can we have a series of talk shows with Gordon, please? And one question from me: Is Gordon going to write a book on his journey (so far) in the world of Formula 1, motor racing and car design? I want it badly!
just watched this and as totally captivated by Mr Murray’s delivery, knowledge and passion. A GENIUS. I was thinking why there’s no knighthood presented to him?
Fantastic interview. Amazing guy Gordon, an abyss of motorsport knowledge and understanding. It's fantastic that he remains so excited about motorsport.
Mr. Gordon Murray - The best and the greatest contemporary Design Manager Engineer! I cannot understand why 99% of rich supercar and industrial production car manufacturers do not understand that weight reduction is always the answer to vehicle efficiency that remains constant regardless of powertrain types.
I am far below the high level of engineering of Gordon. But, so much I can relate to and learnt from that generation of people. Truly fascinating interview!
46:56 This! Absolutely this! We always hear about how today's cars look so slow compared to older cars, and how the camera angles don't help at all. You certainly get this feeling when you're watching the over-the-shoulder footage of Lance Stroll's Williams as it's going up Beau Rivage during Q1 (looking so dull) versus Jarno Trulli's R24 back in 2004, as he drives by the same stretch of the circuit, seemingly at an astonishingly, blinding speed. I mean, in Stroll's case, you're talking about a state-of-the-art 2017 F1 car, with all the most recent technology applied to it, and seems a lot more dull than a 13 year old car. And it's not that it's slower; it's *not*. It's just the sense of speed that's just not there.
I can understand how the car in the middle of the frame philosophy started. It probably came about when camera-people were trying to show their skills with more maneuverable cameras. But I think that it went too far. There should be a balance between stationary and non-stationary cameras. The sport used to look way more spectacular.
@@leoa4c In the early 2000s they had loads of camera shots inside the track of cars flying over the top, that certainly have you a wake up call as to the speed, so yeah completely agree it would be great to have more static cameras
I can't even begin to imagine selling everything and pulling up stakes to travel from home without a guarantee of work, much less starting from zero. It had to be fear of failing which 'drove' him to the levels of excellence.
Furthermore the main problem with the wrong packaging of the Jag xj 220 comes from the initial idea of using v-12 configuration of the engine which was replaced by v-6 later.
54’30. Funny that GM didn’t mention about his claim on using his BT55 as a basis for the MP4/4. I guess that’s because the MP4/4 was in fact not his design. GM is such a bully. Poor management style, no wonder no one in his team liked him.
So much sloppy mouth noise from this. Whoever sorted the audio out for this needs firing. It's like they're all trying to break the record for talking whilst holding a cup of water in their mouths.

Fantastic, what a privilege to hear those insights from GM.

PS....flipping hate after thought brackets!
This. Is. Brilliant. Great job and thank you! Can listen to GM all day.

One of the best interviews I've seen. Everything mentioned just makes you realise how many aspects of motorsport have regressed.
This was just amazing, thank you

utterly unbelievable amount of AAA storytelling
Maybe, on that subject of possible 2-stroke F1 engine, the name that Gordon couldn't remember was Dr Joseph Ehrlich.
Great interview 👍🍺🇺🇲
A true legend of F1 what an interesting man.
Imagine the innovation if Murray and Chapman had actually teamed up
Yes yes yes, he is the best
If I had a McLaren F1 I'd be immediately on the phone to Gordon asking for that steel bracket to be replaced
isn't the Mclaren Mp4/1 first F1 car made by carbon by John Barnard and isn't the Ferrari f40 the first road supercar made by carbon as well?

Great show :D
Some people are born genius.
A driver rotation would fix it. team and everything
best team wins
best driver wins.
best engineer too?

The employees of McLaren have all said that Murray did NOT design the MP4/4. I do not believe anything that comes out of Murray's mouth.

OK Zoomer.
