    Imagine making your F1 debut at 32, having no karting experience, no real financial backing, carrying the pressure of a famous name... and then going on to become world champion. This won't happen in F1 again. If you're a Hill fan or not, these are facts you have to acknowledge and respect the man.

      How good would Hill have been if he had progressed throughout the racing ladder like everybody else through karting and junior racing? We'll never know.

      I was totally wrong, he fought his way to the top and beat the best

      I wish he could have had a real F1 career from an earlier age. He could have been greater than Mansell. He was in his late 30's when he won his championship in '96 and that's an age where most drivers are considered to be losing their edge. To be able to consistently take the fight to a young Michael Schumacher in his prime speaks volumes about Damon's natural talent. A shame he only got his shot late on for sure but he delivered in the end and that's what counts!

    • @thrillathakilla
      @thrillathakilla ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. No one really knew how successful Schumacher was going to be. What he managed to achieve despite being a late starter in motor racing is really incredible. Its just a shame the cars he drove after Williams were not Championship winning standard

    • @HamsterSport
      @HamsterSport ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thrillathakilla Indeed his career followed the natural path once he reached F1. Win the title in a top team and then let your career wind down in the slower teams. If he had been there 5 years earlier I have no doubt he could have been a triple world champion with how strong the Williams cars were. This is providing history took its course and Senna still met his tragic fate. If Ayrton had lived we would have more than likely seen him on top from '94 until '96 at least with '97 an added bonus if he still had the wind in his sails which, if Villenueve in his 2nd season can beat a double world champion in Schumacher, Ayrton would have sailed through that task. It hurts me sometimes to speculate on what could have been so I try to avoid it.

    Nigel Mansell is my favourite racing driver ever, but I was pleased when Damon finally won the World Championship, after 2 seasons of coming 2nd to one of the best drivers ever in Michael Schumacher. Every time I watch the Adelaide incident in 1994, it seems more like a genuine racing incident, instead of Schumacher deliberately taking Damon out of the race and ensuring that Michael won the World Championship. I thought he did it deliberately when I was watching the race live on television, and for quite a few years afterwards.

  • @michaelheath3609

    Will always remember the day Damon finally became World Champion. Had Schumacher not deliberately took him out the season before he could have been a two time champ. One of Britain's greatest sporting moments of the last century.....👌

      *2 seasons before. Also you could argue that had he had a less scrappy 1995 then Williams wouldn't have dumped him and he may have also won the 97 title. Such a nice guy, one title or three I've always had great time for Hill

      @@marcushogan6613 I'll never forgive Williams for what they did. They were dodgy with a few drivers. Mansell got screwed by them, Damon got screwed by them, Ayrton was vetoed out of being offered a contract with them for 1993. They were successful in those years 1991-1997 but you can be successful without being disloyal and cutthroat. Damon galvanised the team in 1994 and almost won a title in his second season before being taken out, and in 1995 had a string of bad luck and that was Williams' excuse to drop him for 1997. Serves them right that he took the #1 away from the team with him and they haven't had the chance to use it since.

    • @HamsterSport
      @HamsterSport ปีที่แล้ว

      To follow on, they had that form with employees too. Adrian Newey was screwed by them in the end and he left for McLaren and it's safe to say the Williams team felt that one. I'm not taking anything away from the team's achievements. They achieved a lot and showed great determination, but I have always struggled to fully respect a team if they show repeatedly in their actions that they aren't completely worthy of that respect. Red Bull spring to mind with some of their behaviour with drivers, and Ferrari are another team who really screwed over their drivers and they still do it to this day to their own undoing. They believe they are bigger than the sport. Williams were not guilty of this but they are almost in that same vein. Anyway, rant over, I'm not trying to be controversial, I just felt like the home truth needed saying.

    Very very underated driver, if you think of the route Damon made to F1 it was nothing like other drivers, and I also think frank Williams realised his mistake letting him go, Frentzen was nowhere near as good !

    No one but the British public got behind Damon which is such a shame as Damon is one of the most underrated F1 drivers of all time , as on his day he had the measure of the cheater Schumacher and very dishonest Benetton team . It still brings a tear to my eye when I see him lift that trophy at Suzuka and still is my all time favourite.

    why the hell has damon not been given and knighthood. He's been one of our greatest sportsmen , displayed the best of British in terms of behaviour, contributed for charity for real reasons as opposed to some who do it for the PR. We give awards to people in the post office but not to great heroes like him. All it does is just undermine the concept of knighthoods. Fortunately Lewis and Jackie were awarded [on merit] . But why has Damon and [GEORGE BLOODY HARRISON} never got a knighthood.
