- The first in a new series - we look back at the 2008 and 2009 Formula 1 seasons when Honda pulled out of the sport. Ross Brawn and Nick Fry, after trying to find a buyer, decided to purchase the team themselves. What followed was one of the most remarkable seasons in Grand Prix history. Here is the full story.
To run a F1 team with only £600,000 for more than half of the season is nothing short of miracle !! I like to salute these two guys.
I always admire Ross Brawn, from Benetton to Ferrari to Brawn GP. Ross laid the foundation to the success of Mercedes F1 team today, there is no if and but about it.
Whether or not he was replaced by Toto and Paddy in 2014, it was going to be a successful year for Mercedes. A F1 car is not built in a day. The rest is history, as they say.
ahlapski Andrew Chavlin just said recently the same! But he added Michael Schumacher, too. It was Brawn and Schumacher. The two who once dominated F1 as never before with Ferrari, did build up a team that did it a second time!
Thats just behind the scenes money... He said each race weekend cost a million quid.

Amazing to hear about the lack of funds. My wife and I were on the Easyjet flight back to Bristol from Nice, after the Monaco 2009 GP; Ross and Nick were also. I got autographs when we landed - they were perfect gentlemen. Unfortunately Easyjet lost our luggage, along with Ross's, Nick's and Eddie Izzards! (who I sat next to on the plane as it happens), but that's another story...
Now that's a story I wanna listen to in detail :p

I'm glad someone pionted me towards this so I could nerd out on it. This is what I always want to know about F1, the battles off the track, the hard work done by the teams, as well as the drivers.

Alex, Agreed! There was rumor of Ross going to McHonda a while back, but with Capito there maybe they will get their act together!

Fry: I started with Honda in 2002 .......
My elderly aunt has a large collection of Motor Sports magazine dating back to 1943. They were collected and lovingly kept in very good condition by her late husband who was an engineer and a car enthusiast. She doesn't want to keep them as she's looking to downsize her home. She's giving them away for free to anyone who's willing to pick them up at her home (she lives in north London), sending them via post is not practical as they are quite heavy and she's not able to manage it. probably the last time i was truely excited about f1, Button had long been my favourite driver, an underdog victory story is always impressive and i never liked the over commercialisation of f1 and the teams, it seemed briefly like the days of Lotus, Mclaren and Williams. actual teams with their own identity and not just brand names.
Benneton, Mercedes, BMW, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, etc. just seems like stolen valour to me, the team achieves something but the brand name takes credit, and loses its identity whenever a new brand name takes over.
I was a massive Lotus fan but to see the enstone team using the Lotus name i didnt like. unles Lotus set up their own team from scratch like Chapman did there will only ever be 1 Lotus. Brand names are not teams.
with only williams and mclaren left i hate what has happened to f1 over the last 30 years.
