      It's a D3D12 issue. D3D12 caching is monstrously slow. Run the game with the -DX11 command line for its launch options, and you'll have a much smoother time.

    That traversal stutter!! Unreal Engines 4 and 5 have had this issue with numerous games based on them. I find it very disappointing that so many publishers/developers are partnering with Epic, not only because of these continual stutters but also because of how ridiculously demanding the engine is, even when titles don't use all of its fancy features. And that's before I even mention the atrocious image quality we see in PS5/Series X games. Give me the Source, Red, RAGE, Decima .... engines any day of the week.

      Try UE1 to UE5.
      It's a thing on all UE engines, since the map is devided by chunks that load as you move.
      I learned this from Lineage 2 that uses UE2.
      In that game, the map loads are actually visible. Watch any gameplay and you'll see it.

      Yep, you said it. The RE engine is pretty good as well in linear games such as this. Their SSR solution is trash but besides that it's nice lol. I have everything maxed on Silent Hill and the image is still way too unstable for my liking. Honestly, they should be ashamed for releasing it this way, but maybe a day 1 patch will help. Unfortunately, once the stutters are there, they never fully go away, no matter how many patches. Haven't seen a UE engine game prove me wrong yet.

      One of the only last standing studios is Remedy, still using their own Northlight engine. Look at Alan Wake 2, absolutely amazing looking, sure it's hard to run but there's no traversal stuttering etc. I was expecting this game to look on par with that game visually but Remedy really shoot way above the mark and set a new standard

      @@sptz87 Id software with their idtech engine for doom, GoW, Decima engine used by guerrilla and Kojima, Bungie use those own engine for Destiny which is the only game engine designed to even work for that game nothing else would be able to (given its extremely unique circumstances, it’s a very unique game despite what everyone might think about it), cod, valve and respawn use source engine. Every day studios convert over to this horribly unplayable piece of dog water engine that UE5 is thou.

    No matter what settings I use, the traversal stutters is the main problem. Wheater its low, med, high, those fcking stutters are present. Have to wait for a patch to continue playing.
    Note:
    Performance issues aside, the remake is really great! I suggest using a headphones when playing. Bloober team really cooked well in this game.

      @@kiely1239 yeah like wtf... I can have around 60+ on a 3080 at 3440x1440p with RT on and DLSS balanced but it can drop to 40s in apartment and bounces around a bunch in areas that make no sense. Great remake so far but man the FPS is wild at times.

    Unreal engine hates gaming pc...a lot of traversal stutters same as dead space remake..and i think the cant fix it..if you are sensitive on lag stutters i suggest you do not buy it yet...playing on 4070 ti 14600k 32gb ram my frame rate its ok with dlaa from dlss tweak tool but my personal experience due to stutters its no possitive

      Digital Foundry has a team of several members, each focusing on different projects at once, they also get early review copies of almost all games, unlike smaller channels like mine, most of the time way earlier as well, but they do tend to take their sweet time with their videos, I, on the other hand focus on providing clear, concise, and ASAP uploads. to be fair, they cover more than just setting comparisons and optimized settings.

    My best settings on my 3060 12GB: 1080P Highest + Low Shadows (Zero difference to me compared to other presets) + Med Effects + DLSS Quality. Gives avg 60-65 FPS+ all the time in forest and 80-85 FPS+ in the town area. I can also get silky smooth 144FPS with Lossless Scaling Framegen 3X Mode.

    The ghosting problem with DLSS is because old version 3.5.2 instead of 3.7.20

    Even with a 4080 this game is too demanding using RT with everything else maxed too.
    I just use DLSS balanced and turn off RT while maxing every other setting. Usually sits between 70 - 90 fps. I also used a guide on the discussion forums on Steam to remove some blurring/ghosting and reduce stuttering issues from happening as much.

    I do see stuttering in this game especially with the 1% lows. I agree with every setting you suggested. I have RX 7800XT and at 4K with very high preset, RT disabled, FSR performance and shadow quality set to medium, I get around 60 FPS average.
    But there are certain places in the game, especially while going from the graveyard towards the Silent Hill Ranch, there is a sudden FPS drop regardless of the camera angle, game resolution, and graphical settings. I did everything that I could but no hope. This sudden FPS drop is like inherent in this game at certain places especially when there seems to be absolutely no transition from a highly graphically demanding area to the least one or vice versa.
    However, at 4K FSR seems to have no pixelation but it seems to have aliasing. In contrast, XESS has very less aliasing compared to FSR but it has pixelation issue regardless of the mode you select, whether it's quality, balanced, or performance.

    By far shadows and RT are the most demanding settings. There are changes to the lighting and shadows rendered but the performance cost is too heavy

    Great job man, I'm really on the fence about purchasing the game or not, stuttering bothers me a lot. I consider Dead Space remake unplayable on pc, how bad and frequent is the traversal stutter in this game?

      It's bad I'm not gonna lie. They usually don't bother me but here it actually does. When/if it gets fixed though the game is 10/10 and one of the best things I've ever played

That's stuff that requires a lot of work if not addressed during production, they have to basically change the way chunks of levels are loaded. Fingers crossed for some improvement but not holding my breath

      Dead Space remake was pretty bad on PC at launch, it definitely got a lot better within a month though. Was never fully fixed though

    I cranked everything to max plus ray tracing on a 4060, it was running at a cinematic 25 fps lol, i had to use dlss to bump it to 60.

    when looking at the window in the room with the first enemy of the game, the room in which you can save. using rt on my 3080ti at 1440p dlss q can produce 80 fps. using the here mentioned optimised settings without rt the same scene i get 115 fps and honestly it looks almost the same. that is a 35 fps improvement from 80, that is a huge 43,75% gain. so depending on your gpu and setting rt can cost much more than in the video mentioned and i bet i can find more demanding places. propably 50% rt loss is possible. anyways the game can produce very good average framerates for the visuals but the traversal stutters need to be fixed.

    I think the optimal setting for shadow is medium, shadow cast from tress/leaves completely gone in low.

    You forgot to mention that "Shaders Quality" also affects the quality of the skin shaders during cutscenes. Low and Medium look like wax or plastic, High looks a lot closer to human skin.

    After playing on amd rx 6600, it seems that AMD gpus don't perform as well as their NVidia counterparts. The game also seems to have memory leak, i suddenly get low frames but after restarting the game in the same area i get back to 60fps.
    The game does not have any pre compilation step section.
    When first launching the game, my pc froze 2 times. The FPS In the menu was 19FPS for some reason and was super sluggish. It later resolved itself after restarting game twice.
    When it comes to selecting Fullscreen or borderless mode the game acts up for me each time.

      The RX 6600 is roughly 25-30% slower than a PS5 equivalent GPU (RX 6700) and a PS5 struggles to lock to 60 in performance mode for this game, so honestly not that surprised to hear the game is running suboptimal for you.

      Try using dx11, I also have an rx6600, and using that instead of dx12 significantly improves performance. The stutters are still there but not as bad, same goes for FPS drops.

    Traversal stutters ruining the experience. Hopefully they will patch this out soon. Also, i can only find TSR and FSR 1 in the upscaling, where can i get FSR3? On my 1660Ti, turning down shadows and shaders to medium from high saves a ton of performance.

    Thank you my friend,i was looking for this. I tried the game on a 5700X with and RTX 3070, 1080p RT on Dlss Performance and Epic settings..What i find weird is that even with RT off at times the FPS remain the same.I m trying to find why...

    I was so sick of stuttering that i just cranked up all settings to epic, turned upscaling off and locked it at 30fps. Almost stutter free now and I'm happy with image quality (DLSS falls apart later in the game) 4070 Super 1440p

    Man, the difference in shadows between low and medium is bonkers. I have everything maxed out and RT and barely hold 60fps with my 3080 now that I put them on low, and can barely notice a downgrade, if any at all. 1440p DLSS Q.

    Limiting FPS using RTSS surprisingly also deals with a lot of stutter and framepacing issues, so its worth a try to limit FPS to some value depending on your PC to improve the experience.

      For a smooth experience, it is always strongly recommended to play with RTSS + Vsync from NVCP + gsync enabled. However, the stuttering issues will still be present for this game no matter what. Only devs can fix that.

      Because fsr 3.0 is just scaling.
      The game doesn't have Frame gen BUT you can force-enable it via engine.ini

    I can't be the only one to notice it (but I never heard this being mentioned), but many of those TPP UE games usffer from the same predicament, i.e. the character model looks like it's being plastered on the bad green screen. The don't glue well together. There is this feeling of the environment being projected independently behind them. Many movies from recent years do the same. One gets taken out of the movie by painfully being reminded that people are standing in an empty space and the backgrounds aren't really there. So distracting. DC movies, recent Marvel movies, Furiosa (the most recent effects heavy movie I've seen) and many others. Same with TV series. Is this going to become a new standard? If so, FFS...

    Why is Unreal Engine so trash? There hasn't been a single title under that engine that performs decent. Optimization is terrible, some settings either do absolutely nothing, or they completely change the look of the game, there are always stutters when loading a level, or coming up to NPCs/enemies, it's getting old at this point. 90% of the time, the incredibly high requirements do not justify the games' visuals, games like RDR2 still look better and run a billion times better.

    Unreal Engine is sadly always prone to stuttering. as impressive as UE5 is, they didnt fix the worst UE4 "feature" xD

      They work equally. If you activate TXAA, it works separately. And if you activate DLSS, it works together with TXAA.

      @@1333MG Yes and it's just like the other guy said. DLSS comes with its own anti-aliasing. I recommend using DLSS which, as we already saw, is the one that works best, being higher than the native resolution. Besides, it gives more fps.

      i experienced that as well, im using fsr 3.0 on quality, low shadows and some other settings that does not affect quality much, it's better but still the game will need some more patches for performance, im usint rx 6700 xt ryzen 5 7600x 32gbram, i round from around 90 fps to 50, even 40 or below sometimes, it ain't that stable
