@@matxalenc8410it makes sense because if you have been through that much trauma since a young age, all you see around you is murder, drug addicts, poverty, etc. He lost his parents at an early age and being raised by elderly people is not the same as being raised by your actual parents. I think the TH-camr missed tbe likely effects of Cain's childhood, raise in a toxic situation from birth, his father killed at the age of 10, and his mother dead from an overdose after that. A real person would need more than loving grandparents, a couple positive friends, and a couple of speeches from a friend's dad. A real person would need therapy. But most black Americans don't have access to it, and many don't even believe in it. Many of us still carry on the authoritarianism that was imposed on our ancestors by enslavers. Many of us tell our children to get right, or we're going to punish them - and that's it. No display of love or empathy. And lots of kids today are still getting beaten. Cain needed a professional to help him deal with his negative feelings and his past and ongoing negative experiences. People who've had a significantly easier life have acted out and engaged in self-destructive behavior as an adult and/or as a child. And as a society, we need to do more than tell people what to do and what not to do. People with mental health issues (which is allmost everyone) need access to good, affordable (or free) mental health treatment.
The reason the ending is so sad to me is not only does it show how the consequences always catch up to you if you decide to live that life but it also shows subtly the cycle that is perpetuated by violence. Cain tried to leave but in his last act, chose to save the kid's life, but that kid then witnessed a whole massacre and will be scarred for the rest of his life and he now has a greater chance of growing up cold too.
Caine was a character I always felt bad for. He’s been trapped in this vicious cycle of violence since he was a child. This is really all he’s known. It’s no wonder he never woke up and realized this isn’t what he wanted for himself. He probably thought there was nothing for him beyond that.
This is another movie i saw at the $1.50 movie theater twice when i was a kid. I hated Caine died & i wanted him to make it out of the hood. The lesson of this movie is everything catches up with you in the end. Rewatching this as an adult i realized that Caine was doing too much & the movie did a great job of making him look like the protagonist. O-Dogg was a dumbass because he was showing off the robbery tape like it was a sports reel. I don’t think Illena was pregnant, she pretended to be in order to trap Caine. Samuel Monroe Jr. is the eternal typecast. If you look up the word typecast in the dictionary you’ll see his picture. Fun Facts: Prior to this movie Tyrin Turner was in Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation Video, In Living Color, Michael Jordan’s Come Fly With Me home video, Deep Cover & Hangin With Mr. Cooper. Larenz Tate appeared on Matlock, Amen, The Wonder Years, The Women Of Brewster Place, New Attitude, The Royal Family, You Take The Kids & The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Caine’s grandparents were played by the late Marilyn Coleman & the late Arnold Johnson. Marilyn Johnson appeared on Good Times, Which Way Is Up, The Five Heartbeats & Meteor Man. Arnold Johnson appeared on Sanford & Son, Good Times, The Jeffersons, A Hero Ain’t Nothing But A Sandwich, Shaft, Family Matters & The Five Heartbeats. The late 2Pac was supposed to play Sharif. He was upset because there was no back story on how Sharif coverted to Islam & he wanted to play O-Dogg instead & he assaulted The Hughes Brothers & bragged about it on Yo! MTV Raps. Spice-1 was supposed to play Caine & MC Ren was supposed to play A-Wax but covered to Islam. MC Eiht & Clifton Powell did voiceovers on GTA: San Andreas. Next weeks review is Bones. Can we please get a review on the following movies: New Jack City South Central Fresh New Jersey Drive
Harold didn't have beef in the streets he was in the wrong place at the wrong time for a carjacking. His decision to delay getting out and feeling his manhood was tested cost him his life. But I agree with many commenters Sharif and his dad were collateral damage for Sharif continuing to hang out with his gangsta friends.
One of my favorite films. You know its good because its been over a decade and I still think about it all the time. You made me think about a lot of things more clearly in the movie, thanks for that.
The thing is when you are a person who had a strict parent when it came to living in the hood and then you watch movies like this you realize why they were strict especially if you put yourself in the protagonist's shoes
I've watched this so many times and noticed how lost Caine looked lost especially when his granddaddy asked if he cared if he lived or died? That was too real! I love the soundtrack to the movie too. Also Clifton Powell is a very overlooked actor. Give him his flowers! Great commentary! I think you should do a commentary on Why Do Fools Fall in Love, since you're on fire with the Larenz Tate flicks! Also, have you seen The Corner, it's a miniseries that aired on HBO in 2000, Charles Dutton directed it and it stars T.K. Carter, Tasha Smith, Glen Plummer and Kandi Alexander. It's set in Maryland and they say it's a prequel to The Wire. You can find it on here.
It damn near made me cry when his grandma had to make the decision to stop coddling Cain once his grandpa told him he couldn't stay there I understand why they had to protect their home and Cain was getting into too much trouble
A straight up hood classic. The song "streiht up menace" by MC Eiht makes this movie so powerful to me. Oh that scene with Caine in the bathroom. He didn't use the bathroom the whole time he was in jail.
At first watching this movie I felt bad for Caine. After I grew up, I only felt bad for shareef. Oh, and the dude who got his Dayton spoke wires robbed off his 5.0 from Caine as well.
I believe that Caine felt like he was in a hopeless situation. Even though Ronnie, Shareef, Stacy, & Mr Butler was trying to steer him in a different direction he couldn't envision it for himself . By the time everyone's messages got through to him it was too late.
I hadn't watched this movie in several years, but the last time I did, one scene stood out to me. After visiting Purnell in prison, O-Dogg was acting like O-Dogg, teasing and pretending to be some stranger who was gonna off him. Caine was sick of his childishness, and he was gonna open up about how Purnell spoke to him. Then, Ilena's cousin pulled up, and Caine reverted back to his destructive behavior. I actually think that Purnell was the one that got to him for a brief period. Especially when considering that Caine avoided him for so long, and seeing him in that state made him realize he was bound to become his mentor or even worse that made him snap into reality, for a moment. But Caine couldn't get out of his own way long enough to where he could've saved his own life, and those around him (he likely would've ended up locked up still, but he wouldn't be dead. And neither Sharif). Thanks for the review! I'm a recently new subscriber and I got the notification for the video 😊😊
This is true I always noticed this too, everybody was telling him his ways weren’t leading to anything good but Purnell had to tell him teach Anthony that everything I taught you was wrong.
This movie. Haunting heartbreaking yet you can't help but get wrapped up in it. Baby anthony is so cute and smart for his age. Cain realized too late he wanted a different life.
@@stupidrules1000 he could have left the gangster life and he could have lived a better one besides making wrong choices and he would have never got himself killed.
@@antwonsmith8931 And when you say "better", better how? Again, be specific. Remember, this is a 17 year old kid, and he is living in the projects, in his grandparents home. what was the better life available to him, and how was he meant to acheive it? If he does what his grandparents did...whatever that might have been...he would end up exactly where they are...in the projects complaining about how horrible it is to live in the projects. So again...be as specific as you can when identifying Cain's possible path to a "better" life.
This movie was a perfect representation of that way of life if you lived in those times, areas or that life in the late 80s and early 90s. This movie is definitely a classic and time capsule of that time
Btw it's a interesting that this movie came out when the LA Riots/ Latasha harlins thing was going on especially with the Asian store owners death in the movie
I was a wife and mother by 21 and barely navigating life because my grandmother had passed and my mom was still living her best crack life. Daddy had OD at 33, when I was 15. Not to mention, I had to grow up early to work and help with my younger siblings. I refused to become a victim of my environment and circumstances. My imagination was fueled by a relentless drive. I hate not being raised by my parents. I’m thankful for my grandparents who did. They all left me early in life. However, the wisdom from my grandparents and lived experiences (some traumatic) of my parents equipped me for my journey. You couldn’t have told me thirty years later, I’d earned my PhD. To God be all of the glory. Talking about life going full circle. The stories I share with my mentees 🙏🏽❤️ Outstanding review and commentary, as always🥰🙏🏽❤️❤️❤️
I always thought his anger, provocation, and killing of the store owner for mentioning "I feel sorry for your mother" implies that his mother was likely in his life at some point, but probably passed-possibly violently), when he was young. In the film, he also mentions crashing from house, to house.
Despite all the warning and invitations from Ronnie and his friends to leave I never felt like Cain would. Cain himself has a very fatalistic outlook because of his parents fates, systematic oppression, etc. I don’t think he believes in free will at all. His destiny is preordained to him. Whats even more messed up is he’s ok with it. He doesn’t valued his life until it flashes before his eyes. When talking about Atlanta, he says “I’m still going to be black in Atlanta.” He’s right all of his problems won’t disappear because he’s in a new environment. But it could work. The whole movie has this theme of fate and life being predetermined from birth.
The main character of this movie had one of the worst self fulfilling name in hood movie history. The idea of naming your black son after the father of biblical murder is like giving your daughter one of best known stripper name. People who believe in nature versus nurture should use this as an example .
While I do believe in nature vs nurture, names absolutely do carry power, and a spiritual presence with them. There's a reason why you can run into folks with the same name, who have the same behavioural traits. Every Silvia Ive ever known, has been a lying conniving wench. Every Meagan and Courtney Ive ever met, was a straight beyotch.
One thing missed here was that his boys tried to him to leave Ilena alone which he ignored. Caine was the opposite of Trey in Boyz N the Hood, there was guidance that he heeded which made him get out the car vs Caine staying in and committing murder. With all the dirt Caine did his death wasn't as sad as it should have been but he clearly had options.
What was the age difference between Caine and Ronnie. Seriously if he was just graduating HS and she had a son about 7-8 plus, that was some statuary stuff going on. Ok I'm done.
I love this movie! I like it a lot more than Boyz in the hood but I do like the comparisons between both the main characters between Trey and Cain. Cain is someone who didn’t have a furious in his life and it reflected that compared to Trey. Also maybe I might be a bit biased for this movie because Lorenz Tate is in the movie and he’s so handsome even with those lil yatti braids 😂😂
This movie is the 1 I thought you were going to do (& thought you already did) when you reviewed "Dead Presidents." I love this movie as well as that 1.
This is one of my favorite hood movies fr but Caine was def wilding in this movie and so were most of the people around him or who were around him when he was a kid. But like you explained, he didn’t listen to the people who had his best interest at heart and that’s one of the reasons he ended up being murdered. This movie basically showed us that our decisions have consequences which is another thing about Menace that I like. They weren’t glorifying street shit even tho some people make it seem like that’s what this movie was doing. But this just some facts about the movie I read a while ago, O-Dog was 16 and Caine was 18 (according to the script). Ilena was lying about being pregnant (from what The Hughes Brothers said). Ronnie was 24 (according to the script). And actually A-Wax dies with Caine and Sharif at the end in the script. But I loved your review of this and you was def speaking facts the whole time 🗣️
I think Caine ignored his Grandparents and not Sharif's Pop mainly because presentation of the message. Caine's Grandparents were at least 2 generations separated from him, so on many levels they wouldn't relate to him. I guess Caine might have more felt he wouldn't relate. Also Caine's Grandfather's messages were packaged with Religious Sermons and Scriptures. It is highly likely Caine was a non believer, which any of the moral messages that were delivered would have gotten ignored. Sharif's dad came from a non-religious point of view. He stated while he wasn't a Muslim he respected what it did for his son (who was in a similar situation as Caine before converting). I would say yes Caine had supportive people but it is also somewhat disingenuous to say Caine is 100% guilty of his own demise. Does Caine bear some responsibility? Yes. But would any other person in similar situations made similar dumb mistakes? Yes. Caine was an 18 yr old and still wasn't a full adult. Also the movie doesn't really discuss what all happened between the time Caine was a kid seeing his father murder someone to him being a High School Senior. Movie implies alot of bad stuff happened to him during that time (witnessing more killings, learning to sell drugs, Mom overdosing). Im guessing those missing years played a bigger part of Caine's temperament than what we were seeing in the movie. Caine was susceptible to Peer Pressure. He generally looked up to Street thugs like Awax, and O Dog, probably because they reminded him most of his father and Pernell. I think by the time people were talking sense to him, he was pretty far down the rabbit hole.
I said this in another review about this movie a few months ago, but the crazy part about this film is it took place over the span of the WHOLE student summer break. Let that sink in....
My favorite hood classic! I never noticed Too Short was in this movie either. Now umma have to watch it again. Cain was living a fast life and he unfortunately met the consequences of all his actions. I feel in love with Larenz Tate during this movie and been loving him since. Such a great actor. Bones!!
Great review as always sis 🙌🏾. I can’t tell you how many times my cousin and I used to rewind the car scene with Kane, O-Dog and Wax looking for Harold’s killers. O-Dog cursing Kane out used to crack us up. I can recite that scene word for word. 😂 My cousin fell in love with Larenz Tate and she still crush on him til’ this day. Tyrin and Larenz are still fine. 😍 The next review, I know the movie and revenge is sweet.
My brother and I used to act that scene out, lol! Then me and my friends in high school. I went from O -Dog to A-Wax, cause I was the old school one in the crew 😭😭!!
5:00 you misunderstood this part. Harold didn't have no beef with those guys, they just wanted his car. That was a regular 80-90's LA carjacking. It was common knowledge back then to run red lights in certain places in LA.
The role of Sharif was originally supposed to go to Tupac. But the directors ( Allen & Albert Hughes obviously had other plans. They dropped him from the movie without telling him. That was one of the cases Tupac caught.
As a 90's baby 🍼 This one of the Dopest Hood Cinema of the 90's and crazy this year makes 30 years since this classic and Unfortunately, we're still going through certain tragedies as a community from Crime, Drugs, Gun Violence, Etc. Fun Fact: 2pac pose to played Shareef an ex knucklehead turned Muslim, I know we all thought it would be O-Dog, or Caine because of his wild nature. I loved Jada Pinkett in this one she was beautiful and Real, also, Larenz Tate was dope as well and his Character was iconic and memorable as Bishop off of "Juice". Lastly, Clifton Powell played in alot of movies I loved how Caine Pistol Whipped him at Ronnie's going away party. I wish Caine would've just left with Ronnie and Anthony and learned to get a real job instead of selling Dope they would've been a beautiful couple 😍🥰. Loved the Songs in this movie from: Marvin Gaye "Got to give it up" The Isley brothers " Living for the love of you" Love the 90's Miss the 90's 😞 Keep it going Queen 👑 Can you do "The Best Man", "The Brothers", and "Hitch" 😁
Cain was never meant to be a good character.. He was always meant to be a bad person... he just doesn't look as bad when compared to O Dog. And ultimately Cain was brought down because he ghosted a female. Who the directors said in interviews was lying about being pregnant... she just did like be ghosted.

You don’t leave your day ones
Sharif was trying to save them that’s why
He was fine too😂🎉❤

One of my favorite films. You know its good because its been over a decade and I still think about it all the time. You made me think about a lot of things more clearly in the movie, thanks for that.
The thing is when you are a person who had a strict parent when it came to living in the hood and then you watch movies like this you realize why they were strict especially if you put yourself in the protagonist's shoes
Sharif was also in Boyz N the Hood he's the one who took Ricky's foootball
He also appeared on Roc, the short lived HBO series Laurel Avenue & the movie Walking Dead.
You are right! Never realized that
Thanx cuz
@@Pazuzu82 you're welcome
@@Pazuzu82😂😂 classic response
You can find it on here.
yep
It damn near made me cry when his grandma had to make the decision to stop coddling Cain once his grandpa told him he couldn't stay there I understand why they had to protect their home and Cain was getting into too much trouble
A straight up hood classic. The song "streiht up menace" by MC Eiht makes this movie so powerful to me. Oh that scene with Caine in the bathroom. He didn't use the bathroom the whole time he was in jail.
I agree
The trigga gots no heart by spice 1 is also a good song
the way her cousin runs to the car is hilarious🤣🤣
The way he was looking around as he ran to the car always took me out 😂😂😂😂
I DO THAT EVERY TIME I GO TO MY RIDE
My fav part of the movie.
At first watching this movie I felt bad for Caine. After I grew up, I only felt bad for shareef. Oh, and the dude who got his Dayton spoke wires robbed off his 5.0 from Caine as well.
Nah homey was a hustla too. He was riding round with Daytons, gold, and a pager. He damn sure wasn't working a construction job😂😂😂😂😂
So the twist is , he was dead the whole time he was narrating his life . The Hughes brothers were “Shaymalaning” wayyyy before shaymalan 😂
I believe that Caine felt like he was in a hopeless situation. Even though Ronnie, Shareef, Stacy, & Mr Butler was trying to steer him in a different direction he couldn't envision it for himself . By the time everyone's messages got through to him it was too late.
That white boy had to be a Federal agent 😭😭😂😂
Yup. ALL white people are Federal agents🙄🤣🤣🤣
That knocking boots meme will always make me laugh 😂
Caine was product of his environmental unfortunately. What you do will catch up to you and possibly be your fate . Tyron Turner is so handsome 😍
Heck no! Harold was fine asf❤
This movie. Haunting heartbreaking yet you can't help but get wrapped up in it. Baby anthony is so cute and smart for his age. Cain realized too late he wanted a different life.
' For the Nostalgia ' is a REAL one ❤
Cain had so many oppurtunities to leave. But death was coming and knocking.
And he opened the door, by continuously making poor choices.
What were his opportunities?
@@stupidrules1000 he could have left the gangster life and he could have lived a better one besides making wrong choices and he would have never got himself killed.
@@antwonsmith8931 Ok...but what exactly were the opportunities he had? Be specific. You say he had so many other opportunities....what were they?
@@antwonsmith8931 And when you say "better", better how? Again, be specific. Remember, this is a 17 year old kid, and he is living in the projects, in his grandparents home. what was the better life available to him, and how was he meant to acheive it? If he does what his grandparents did...whatever that might have been...he would end up exactly where they are...in the projects complaining about how horrible it is to live in the projects. So again...be as specific as you can when identifying Cain's possible path to a "better" life.
O’Dog pissed me off with repeatedly showing the tape to everyone, and then the fool gone say “Imma sell this for $59.95!”😂😂😂😂
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
This movie was a perfect representation of that way of life if you lived in those times, areas or that life in the late 80s and early 90s. This movie is definitely a classic and time capsule of that time
30 years later, this is still a classic! 🎥💯❤️
Yup.
The hood movie where the protagonist gets killed at the end. If nothing else tells you the harsh reality of that thug life, I don't know what will.
Lol i wonder when Caine took dude's rims. Did the guy just stand there and watch Caine take them off one at a time. 😅
Word lol
This movie was very gritty. O dog was a straight-up sociopath. And Cain had too many chances but he was reckless.
Someone said Charles S. Dutton always play the Angry Black Man, and i can’t unsee that lmao.
He was dope in "Roc"
Haha, he was great in "A Low Down Dirty Shame"

Btw it's a interesting that this movie came out when the LA Riots/ Latasha harlins thing was going on especially with the Asian store owners death in the movie
My brother and I used to watch Menace 2 Society every other Saturday. Still a classic to this very day.
Yup.

The stories I share with my mentees 🙏🏽❤️
Outstanding review and commentary, as always🥰🙏🏽❤️❤️❤️
And Cain would return from the dead for the sequel, put on a red mask and a red outfit, and become The Big Red Machine known as...Kane. 🔥

Where was odog’s folks ? because he was wildin’ . Great review much love ❤️
I always thought his anger, provocation, and killing of the store owner for mentioning "I feel sorry for your mother" implies that his mother was likely in his life at some point, but probably passed-possibly violently), when he was young. In the film, he also mentions crashing from house, to house.
Enjoyed the Review as always but you left out one of the best parts in the movie..... The Cheeseburgers scene
"What the fuck yu telling me for?" Is one of the funniest movie lines that shouldn't be funny
My fav hood film of all-time since as a kid and make great commentary with your voice, marvelous
The main character of this movie had one of the worst self fulfilling name in hood movie history. The idea of naming your black son after the father of biblical murder is like giving your daughter one of best known stripper name. People who believe in nature versus nurture should use this as an example .
Yes! Or naming your daughter Jezebel
His real name was actually Kaydee.
@@kylecruelit’s ok if women do that with young men, nothing inappropriate about it at all.💯
That scene with Bill Duke😂😂😂😂😂
Whenever you feel dumb, immature, etc., just remember that there is always that one person who has the same exact mentality as O-Dog.
You bringing up the San Andreas reference earned you a new subscriber! Great breakdown
As always, bringing us classic after classic. It's been a while, but definitely digging this one out again soon. Thank you ❤
I'm loving you more. You are reviewing all the movies I love back to back.
But I loved your review of this and you was def speaking facts the whole time 🗣️
So Pernell was chester
I love the “pop up video” caption❤
It’s free on Tubi and I had to rewatch it in my adulthood. Definitely one of my favorite hood classics.
This movie is FILLED with Black all-stars. Shout out to the Hughes Brothers.

5:00 you misunderstood this part. Harold didn't have no beef with those guys, they just wanted his car. That was a regular 80-90's LA carjacking. It was common knowledge back then to run red lights in certain places in LA.
Cain’s cousin, Harold, didn’t have beef. He wasn’t even from the area. It was strictly a come up. Armed robbery because of the car he was driving.
O-dog is a straight up demon man. He's really cold af
This is a great movie with a sad ending
(Mr. Butler's voice) "The hunt is on, and you're the prey!"
The role of Sharif was originally supposed to go to Tupac. But the directors ( Allen & Albert Hughes obviously had other plans. They dropped him from the movie without telling him. That was one of the cases Tupac caught.

Cain was never meant to be a good character.. He was always meant to be a bad person... he just doesn't look as bad when compared to O Dog. And ultimately Cain was brought down because he ghosted a female. Who the directors said in interviews was lying about being pregnant... she just did like be ghosted.
