Bought same monitor for nostalgic reason, a display I never would have been able to buy back when it was new. I bought it for $25, in Sweden a at a thrift store. Uses it as my second monitor, ditch my old(but newer) display because it just looks amazing.
When I switched from Windows to Mac in 2011 I went with a great little 11” MBAir with Bluetooth kb, trackpad, mouse, a SuperDrive optical drive and …. a 27” Cinema Screen. I thought I was crazy spending $1000 on it but the last 11 years proved it to be a great decision. It hooks to the video port, USB port and powers the Mac. It’s 1440 and still looks awesome and modern with slim aluminium case and power supply contained inside. I have it running with 2017 13” MBAir right now and honestly, for regular work it’s still great. $1000 was well spent. 11 years of faultless running with my macs. No, it isn’t 4K or 5k etc but absolutely fine for normal use and no wobbly stands or plastic case. I will soon pass it on and am going to Apple Studio 27”, M2 Mac and all new peripherals. Basically the same concept but all now Usbc and single wire Thunderbolt link. But I am aware that the change is more “want” driven versus “need” !! I also wanted to keep the old system together as all the plugs work properly between screen and Mac. Enjoyed your vid. Thank you.
Jealous of the new setup. The studio displays are sexy as f. I agree totally also. The build quality of these things are so good. The material and the design still hold up. And 4K or more just isn’t “needed”. For a TV sure. But very happy gaming and creating on my computer with HD. I need a MacBook Air. The m2 ones are so friken sweet man. Still quite haven’t got to 100% using my M1 iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. Gona try out the new stage manager and external Monitor this weekend and see.
So I bought this monitor back in 2015 for about $120 dollars shipped on eBay. I’ve been using it ever since as a daily driver. I’ve always wanted to get a higher rez one especially since I cut video but I have one issue. I have a display switch that uses dvi and the resolution is actually 1680x1050 and I have 6 computers hooked up to it. I’d need to get a kvm or something more modern for a newer monitor and have just been lazy about it. I also have a 30 inch Cinema Display for my other workstation that is actually a pc. Works perfectly fine with windows 10. It’s amazing apple still has the drivers for this 20 year old display. Having said that, I still love these monitors and can’t seem to get rid of them and they don’t want to die either. I’ve noticed the 30 is extremely fickle with adaptors (at least mine is) so I try to hook up machines that don’t require more than the original apple display port adapter they sold.
They are very long lasting for sure. Adaptors are weird yeah. It’s a good idea to avoid them and find direct mini display port etc. Can recommend the Radeon Pro series cards which usually only have mini display ports. Some don’t but many do. Specially for video editing. Work a treat.
Been using the 30” version of this. Still pretty good! You can buy displays with higher resolution of course but this was a state of the art back then. Still holds up great against the current $200-600 displays. The only problem is the PSU. If it breaks down you will still spend 2-300 on it.
I use the Apple HD Cinema Display model A1082 30-inch as my daily monitor and am still happy with it. Works great for my needs... graphic design and photography. @@RobertMizen Thank you very much. I feel extremely fortunate. So, this is actually better than 1080p? Up until now, I've been using computer monitors that are about 720p.
Thank you for an interesting video! Been looking at these for a while :) Do you have the chance to measure the height of the display unit itself without the stand? Would be nice to know! Tack :)
Depends on what GPU you got. I just use a normal adaptor for DVI to HDMI. Also you can hook the USB Cable to the computer and use the Hub on the screen. I found that to be hit or miss depending on the board and system used. Linux found the hub often. Windows was 50/50
As long as you have a dvi or mini display your good. Adaptor if needed. But I think the mini has mini display and dvi? So the connectors on the screen will be ok
Thanks for the comment. I used a warm damp cloth for the case since it’s aluminum. And the screen just some normal screen cleaner like you get for monitors and glasses etc.
Hey man great post! question: I was able to get my hands on two cinema displays 23" from 2008. Excellent condition! I use Davinci as well, and I am getting a 4K monitor to work on my Timeline and do phot editing as well... (a 27") but I will be using the Cinema displays for arranging my media and scopes. I bought one second hand several years ago and absolutely love it. However, since updating my MacBook Air to Big Sur, I just can't get the to work together. I am thinking I will have to go back to Catalina - unless anyone has any ideas?
Not sure, my 2013 Macbook Pro worked with it. So i am thinking perhaps maybe it could be signal issue. Maybe reset the PRAM or SMC and see if that helps.
@@jennyaspin8598 Its not an issue i have ever seen. I am thinking it could be some setting perhaps or the order of plugging in. I did see once a monitor that would not show after reset. So had to reconnect each time.

This one I had on Catalina but my husband inadvertently installed Big Sur on it (long story!) and I can no longer use my Apple Cinema with it. I am so stupid, I saw one at a garage sale for 20 euros but skipped on it because I didn’t know if I had the cable. But now that I think about it I think it just had plain old DVI which I do have. Can’t believe I skipped on it now. Do you know if it remembers the brightness setting. For example If I set it to max brightness on a MacBook then plug it into a windows pc and it will be useable at full brightness?
I think the brightness is somehow tied to the OS. so you would need to set on both but do not quote me on that. I have not used Windows at all in over 1 year.
Thanks for excellent content : info. My 2004 20” retrieved from ca. 12 years storage - plugged in but no power light on monitor. Not connected to Mac laptops because have no adapters (yet). Is the ‘no power’ light and ‘no screen on’ a stopper - or can this be easily fixed? Thanks from Cdn.
Much appreciate the feedback. The 2004 20” Cinema Display after simply connecting it to a 2015 MacBookAir seems to be (almost) fully functional), however, the + and - brightness buttons (right side edge) do not adjust brightness on the Display.. Command and F2 also has no effect on the brightness. Perhaps brightness control is not supported by Catalina 10.15.7? Any info on brightness control would be very welcome Many Thanks.

Would just like to ask what version of mac pro you are using and the graphics card. Have you connected straight to the dvi output on the card or did you use an adapter to display port connection. Thanks
Which part? There is the cables coming out the back for power and display and usb etc. The power cable is just to connect to the power brick. Then from there you connect to mains.
@@RobertMizen so that would work without the usb plugin that comes on the cinema display dongle? Or would I have to actually plug that into one of the USB ports on the Mac itself? Yes it will work fine. This monitor only requires single link dvi so a standard dvi to thunderbolt or hdmi adapter will work without any issues.
Please, what is the maximum resolution of the Apple Cinema Display 23"? Is it 720p? 1080p?
Is it possible to also use it with a 2012 Dell Vostro PC running Ubuntu Budgie 22.04? Thank you very much.
I purchased mine for $20.00 at a garage sale. It is plugged into my 2012 Mac Mini. I LOVE this display!
Hi. The display is HD.
I think the top resolution should be 1920x1200
You should be fine to use the monitor with anything given the correct connector or adaptor.
Also great price!
@@RobertMizen Thank you very much. I feel extremely fortunate. So, this is actually better than 1080p? Up until now, I've been using computer monitors that are about 720p.
@@elyzsabethahne2116 Its HD Standard with a slightly different aspect ratio. Colours and density looks awesome on this monitor still.
Thank you for an interesting video! Been looking at these for a while :) Do you have the chance to measure the height of the display unit itself without the stand? Would be nice to know! Tack :)
Not sure, but also i do not think you can take the stand off. Not without lot of work.
I have been given one of these and would like to connect it to a PC. Please can you advise what I need to do this
TC
Depends on what GPU you got. I just use a normal adaptor for DVI to HDMI. Also you can hook the USB Cable to the computer and use the Hub on the screen. I found that to be hit or miss depending on the board and system used. Linux found the hub often. Windows was 50/50
Thanks, will have a go.
Can I put a 30in with an iMac mini 2012…do I need other connects or just use the ones the screen comes with???
As long as you have a dvi or mini display your good. Adaptor if needed. But I think the mini has mini display and dvi? So the connectors on the screen will be ok
Great video! What did you use to clean the case and the screen? It looks great.
Regarding the Cinema displays: are they 1080P (HD) and regarding color rendition what are the specs? thanks!
Im not sure off the top of my head but everymac has specs for everything:
everymac.com/monitors/apple/studio_cinema/specs/apple_cinema_display_23.html
Can you use the Fireware connectors?
I do not use them, but you can use if your computer has those ports :)
Hi, which power adapter is applicable for the 23? I noticed when I used 65w it becomes yellowish
I think that needs 90w mate
@@RobertMizen thank you mate!
The interesting question is, who did you connect it? HDMI to DVI? USB-c to DVI?
I use a adaptor if i need too. DVI can work sometimes or a DVI to HDMI also.
@@RobertMizen thank you, but unfortunately it didn't.
@@jennyaspin8598 Its not an issue i have ever seen. I am thinking it could be some setting perhaps or the order of plugging in.
I did see once a monitor that would not show after reset. So had to reconnect each time.
@@RobertMizen I had a 2015 Air before and the same thing happened when I upgraded it to Big Sur. This one I had on Catalina but my husband inadvertently installed Big Sur on it (long story!) and I can no longer use my Apple Cinema with it. I'm thinking I might have to bite the bullet and go back to Catalina.
@@jennyaspin8598 Certainly something im going to look in too. Would be strange to remove support for a monitor.
Thanks for comment dude :)
The light on the power brick or screen?
Much appreciate the feedback.
The 2004 20” Cinema Display after simply connecting it to a 2015 MacBookAir seems to be (almost) fully functional), however, the + and - brightness buttons (right side edge) do not adjust brightness on the Display.. Command and F2 also has no effect on the brightness.
Perhaps brightness control is not supported by Catalina 10.15.7?
Any info on brightness control would be very welcome
Many Thanks.
@@smallg327 I’m using Big Sur and also Monterey and was working ok on my Mac Pro. (The cheese grater one) perhaps the button is little faulty or old. But you could try lunar.fyi to see if it helps
Would just like to ask what version of mac pro you are using and the graphics card. Have you connected straight to the dvi output on the card or did you use an adapter to display port connection. Thanks
Mac Pro 5,1 with a Radeon Pro WX 4100 and using a adaptor. My Cinema display is actually mostly an extra screen, not a main one.
I have a screen exactly like this.
How can I connect it to Windows on an HP Omen laptop?
You will need some adaptor. DVI to what ever your laptop has. should work fine
Hello,
Is the plug detachable or is it hardwired like the studio display?
Which part? There is the cables coming out the back for power and display and usb etc. The power cable is just to connect to the power brick. Then from there you connect to mains.
Have you found a way 2 hook it to a video card with displayport and/or hdmi?
An adaptor will work, a dvi to hdmi for example.
@@RobertMizen so that would work without the usb plugin that comes on the cinema display dongle? Or would I have to actually plug that into one of the USB ports on the Mac itself? Apologies for what could be stupid questions but I am building this for well to start a TH-cam channel with. Thank you, Ellen advance
@@bilhorinek7406 it should be fine. Not tried myself. I don’t use the usb feature. But worth a look I think now that you mention it.
@@bilhorinek7406You only need to plug in the usb Connector if you want to use the usb hub integrated in the back of the screen. Only the 30” Cinema Display needs the usb connection for additional power. The 20” and 23” screens are fine without :-)
can i use it for xbox?
With the right adaptor from dvi to hdmi sure.
i found yr video because I am trying to find out how to Connect the Cinema Display to a 2023 Mac Mini. Your video disregarded this threshold question. I just got a new Mac Mini today and sadly can not yet connect to the C.Display. The HDMI connection which I used to connect my macbook (2018) is not doing the trick. Can you help me out here?
An adaptor should do it. I mean use a DVI to HDMI one perhaps? I use mine via DVI.
@@RobertMizen Hi. I had a DVI to HDMI and at first I got no "reception." But after I made my post I fiddled with it again and got it to work not sure why at first the connection failed but very happy with a 2004 monitor successfully linked to a 2023 Mac Mini. Success!
Does it work as a PlayStation monitor?
As long as you have the right connectors/adaptors then it should be fine.
Hi. A short time back I bought this monitor from a friend with a giant tangle of cords and adapters. I just tried to connect it to my PC and can't for the life of me figure it out! I've looked at a ton of videos. How do I connect this to a PC?? In addition to the power brick I have a 3" square that the DVI connects into. It has 2 cords- USB and mini display(?). Thanks!!
Yeah lol. They are quite weird.
But you have DVI, standard for hooking up pc. There is a smaller like large usb c looking cable that goes in to the lower brick. And there is one mini display type connector too.
Let me know if you have issues after still :) and I try to help you
@@RobertMizen I should clarify, it is a laptop. 1 usb c port, 1 hdmi and 2 usb. I don't know what to connect to what. The cord from monitor has 4 cords, I have 1 going to power and then the DVI connects into another smaller box with the DVI port and a usb port. That little connector box has one usb and one mini display. I swear I've tried every combo of what goes where. Is software needed? Thank you!!
@@losfelizlife3768 Your gona need a DVI to HDMI adaptor for your laptop and the monitor.
Then you can use the DVI from monitor to the adaptor and then the laptop. Signal should be decent.
The USB and Firewire you can then use also from the monitor if its hooked your laptop. (Firewire unlikely but the USB be useful)
@@RobertMizen I just ordered that yesterday. Not sure why the apple adapter I had from DVI to usb didn't work, but hope this does. Thank you!! I'll report back when I can get this giant beautiful thing working. :)
Just smashed that "like", Crushed that "sub", and pimp slapped TF outa that "bell" my doggins : )
Cheers!
Hi, thanks for that. But be careful "smashing" the like button. Do not want to break the mouse.
@@RobertMizen HA! NO worries I have several. You know...

Yeah should be fine. It’s just a monitor. The connector is standard.
@@RobertMizen thank you :)
