Good design stands the test of time. - I have been using two 30" Cinema Displays over a number of years (+10) and I just purchased 16" MBP M1Max - Thank you! Connectivity was a concern but I will say the Firewire, and USB are obsolete I/Os by todays standards; luckily, I may still get some life out of these two beauties before I have to retire them. What a great Legacy!
I love my 30" on my old Mac Pro 5,1...and have been on the search for a second... As I really prefer having matching monitors for ease of screen shifting..
You were able to connect both with two of these adapters? I'm going to purchase the M1 Mac Studio and have been scouring solutions for my two 30" Cinema Displays. This video is the first thing I've come across that's been straightforward and to the point. It almost seems too good to be true.
I stumbled on four of these boxed up, left over from my company when we shut down in 2010. I remember that I had spent so much on them I couldn't talk myself into liquidating them. Imagine my surprise when 15 years later I get, ok not one, not two three or four, but like 7 adapters docks and cords, plug them each in in the magic combination viola! They're actually still very nice displays. Plus sitting in front of them will keep me warm through the winter.
I bought a 30" for $100 to match up with my M1 Studio, which I bought the week it was released. I used a $25 adapter from Amazon, and it works fantastically. I've looked at the new Apple displays, but I can't justify the price.
I got one for $50 with all the cables included. All I did was just plug into my iMac mini and boom… You are correct the colors are incredibly rich perfect bold colors. Love it very much. Thanks for your video.!!!
I’m still using my cinema 30”, and it’s perfect. In Europe it’s still valued a lot, around 1000 € if it is in mint condition, with the original power supply and the original box, like mine. But I won’t sell it, it’s an amazing and good looking monitor 😎
Still using one! I absolutely agree what you said. Paired up with a Mac Pro 5.1. Mine is from 2007 and still holds up really well. The only problem is the PSU. If it breaks down you will spend a lot of money to replace it.
thank you for the tip, it works! I tried to connect my new macbook pro M1 with my old Apple Cinema display with two other adaptors before trying this, and none worked (the connection between the devices were established, but the monitor was black). this solution is perfect.
I use one of these with my M1 Mac Mini, it died after two decades of service so I went out and bought another one immediately. No other monitor will do. And hilariously it does look like it was made for the Mac Mini (and by extension the Studio). As you mentioned the radiuses match and even the small LED light on the monitor is exactly the same as the M1 Mac Mini, it matches better than their new displays 😂
That’s great to know. I’d been using the Apple 30 inch Cinema Display with a PC 3d workstation for years. It has since died but the display is still going strong. I’m considering purchasing an M2 Mac Mini to pair with it. Does anyone know if the M2 Mini works the same as the M1 Mini with this display?
Also, you can use plug the USB cable that breaks out from the display into the USB-A ports to give you two USB-A ports on the monitor itself though it will only run at USB 2.0 speeds. The Firewire ports can also work with a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter connected to a Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 adapter connected to a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 adapter with the monitor's Firewire cable plugged into that. Though if you're like 99% of most people, the Firewire likely has no significance to you whatsoever.
Hi Johnny, thank you thousand times for your video. I just wanted to retire my beloved 23" display- because it never worked with my M1 MB Air with adapters- today I ordered the CLUB- now it works....!!! Very nice and relaxed videos - good work!
I have two, one paired to my Apple Studio M1 and the other to my Mac Pro 2010, they work great. The only issue of course is the resolution, especially when comparing it to my 5K monitors and 4K. It is what it is. They look great and can't beat the older generation units.
I agree, the CCFL backlight do get really warm. I have seen a LED backlight conversion on the 30 inch display, but it's not an easy task and they don't make a kit for it.
Thinking of upgrading my 2010 Tower to a Mac Studio and wondered about its compatibility with my 30” Cinema Display … and here you are! I’ll make sure and get the version with the HDCP off. Thanks for your recommendation!
I've been using the 30" ACD with my Mac Studio since I bought the Mac Studio when it first came out. The USB-C -> Dual link DVI adapter caused some issues where I would see little sparkles all over the screen. It was so annoying that I chained two adapters together (dual link DVI -> mini displayport and then mini displayport -> usb-C) which worked properly. It's been a year and a half, and I still love the combo. I've thought about upgrading, but why bother?
Wish I could find one for sale locally... And really wish I had the luck of finding one for $50... Will certainly continue to keep an eye out for a second one to add to my Apple setup!! Glad to know there are options for hooking this beauty up to a newer setup
Thanks for all the info, I snagged a 30-inch with nice box all in good shape for $100 and also a free one from goodwill with dim center backlight (spare power supply at least). Better to wait and find a good one than try to fix these. I'm using it with the Mac mini M2 and Club3d adapter. However I have been on the hunt for a 2007 or 2008 model since I learned this : "On August 7, 2006 the Aluminum Cinema displays had a silent upgrade that boosted the brightness and contrast ratios to 300/400 cd/m2 and 700:1". It is hard the only way to check is if you can see the serial number on the bottom and check it against its manufacturing date.
Why this video isnt so popular? This video is awesome!! Old cinema display feels better than new studio displays. This monitor is even better than thinkvision midrange monitors available today, like e27q-20. Combining with taxes in some countries, it varies to 300 dollars, This is far better and you can get them for 150 dollars 2 of them and have a inexpensive luxury setup.
I got two of these off Craigslist for $50 each (regretting leaving a third one there). One has functional side switches, the other was a bit flakey. One is in use on a 2021 MacBook pro the other on a W10 laptop. Neither system has bios power button options. For the flakey one, I carefully pulled the side panel off using a putty knife and disconnected the ribbon cable. Both are using X10 appliance modules to cut power when not in use. Now that the switch is removed, the display stays on when in use. Great video by the way; I bought the monitors based off your review.
Big ups for the 30inch Cinema Display. I have one that I'm keen to re-deploy but it hasn't been able to connect to my 13 inch macbook, and I'm yet to get the Mac studio.. will advise how I go!
Hi Johnny, thank you for this informative video. I have a question for you and all the readers of this post. I'm about to buy a MacBook Pro Max and I have two 30’ Apple Cinema monitors at home. do you think it will work without a hitch to connect these two monitors to the MacBook? I'd really like this to work... Of course, if I make my purchase and find that it works, I'll come and say so here to help other users of this beautiful screen. Thanks for your reply if you have one.
Hello Johnny McPro, Thank you for your very informative video about the Mac Studio with the Cinema Display. I currently use 2-Apple Cinema HD Displays 23-inch (1920 x 1200) with my old 2010 MacPro. Planning to purchase a refurbished Mac Studio - can I use 2 monitors in the new setup?
Nice video. Thank you. In Ventura, how do you get it to display full resolution? I only get 1920x1200 with the dual link DVI connector. Thanks for the help!
The only monitor that was sold by Apple and its not Apple product is LG 5K 27" M5MD5KL. Complete competition to Apple Studio display and fully compatible with Mac. With some patience and luck you can get one of these for less than $400. However, wanted to ask you if you think Thunderbolt Display is much better than Cinema one you just reviewed and what are the reasons for yes or no? Thank you
I paid $150 for a 30 inch monitor in good condition in March 2024 local to San Diego County. With the box and a USB-C adapter. You can find the 23 inch version all day for $50.
I own Cinema Display 30” since Feb. ‘09, and I’ve bought it in couple with the Mac Pro 2008 3,1. Now, when I’ve finally bought Mac Studio (M1 Max basic configuration), I wondered just how am I to plug my display to it. ‘Cause it seems almost impossible to buy this Club3D in Russia. I couldn’t find it here for sale! That’s why I’ve bought a standard Apple A1306 and USB-C to MiniDP adapters. I think this configuration should work, too.
For the connection I use the Sonnet Thunderbolt3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter. And 2 active DVI to MiniDisplay adapters. Works. And I only use one Thunderbolt port.
Thank you for such a great review! Your first 30" Cinema Display vid actually inspired me to get a 30" Cinema Display myself, and I'm so happy with it 😀 I wanted one since 2005 where I bought a 20" display and dreamt about the 30", so Im finally living the dream 🙂 Quick question. I can see that you showcase several movie clips in your test. How exactly do you do that, or is it a Mac specific thing with the Club 3D adapter. I also bought the same adapter for my Windows PC, and while it worked for desktop use, whenever I started Netflix, Disney+ or any other streaming service, the screen would turn black, and I would have to restart my computer. Now I run the screen of an older Nvidia gfx card with a dedicated DVI (dual link) output, and It works flawless.
Do you still need the USB - A connector to power up as even with old mack pro desktop computer it requires the USB A connector. i use the Apple Dual link DVI brick adapter and that still needs the USB A cable connected. just curious before i purchase one.
I had the 23" version of this (well, still have it in the basement). But the backlight started flickering so I had to retire it. I think it's something to consider if you're planning on getting a display from this era.
Can I know if with this dvi to usb-c adapter the HDCP protocol is support ? Because this screen isn’t support HDCP at all, so Netflix or other DRM services won’t work.
I have a new mac mini also. You wouldn’t need to do that. The USB C ports on the back of the Mac Mini are also Thunderbolt/display-port ports. You will get the best possible picture from a monitor using display port over HDMI, from what i’ve researched. I say all this but currently my monitor only has an HDMI out port so I have been using HDMI with no issue. If you wanted to use HDMI, then you certainly can plug the usb c end of the adapter he shows in the video, into a usb-c to hdmi adapter and you shouldn’t have a problem. Just know it’s not required and if you don’t already own that adapter as well, then you could save yourself some money. Cheers.
Thanks for the video Johnny! Will the Mac Studio work with 2 30" Cinema displays? I recently purchased the new studio display and have been thinking about returning it and buying 2 30" displays.
I use two 30" Cinema Displays on a 2019 Mac Pro. I used DVI adapters for both but they still wouldn't work without the power brick and the USB being plugged in. Are you saying you didn't have to use the bricks or the USB? Thanks.
I bought the Club3D product, plugged it in but cannot get it to work with my 30" Cinema Display. The screen goes from black to gray with some flickering. My new MacStudio has the M2 Ultra chip (I know you recommended not upgrading, but that choice was not mine to make). Club3D says their product will NOT work with the M3, but I only trying to get it to work with an M2 Ultra. Any ideas? Thanks -- and great videos BTW.
@@RobertMorris-z3f I am similarly stuck. The 1510-A adapter works perfectly with my Intel i7 MacBook Air, but not with my M1 Mac Mini nor my M2 Max Mac Studio. I can tell it’s connecting, but as you described, it just goes to a backlit black screen. Did you figure out a solution?
Hello all! I bought one of this recently. Anyone know the way to made this work well in windows? I tried to connect it to my gtx 3070 with dvi to hdmi adapter but the highest resolution that it gives to me is 1280x800. Any idea? Thanks!!!
Your method with the club adapter worked first time, thanks. One problem for me, when I check DISPLAYs in the system preferences, I am not getting the 2500 resolution, only 1800. I don''t see 2500 as a choice. there are 2 choices under scale, both lower than the 2500 I want. How do I see the full res of the monitor. I know my mac mini generates that much res.
Thanks for the helpful video, Johnny! Quick question: I just set up my new Mac Studio, and I tried connecting my 30" Apple Cinema Display (which I've had for years) with the adapter I got using the link in this video, but the screen is just black. The Mac Studio doesn't seem to be detecting the Apple Cinema Display. Not sure what I'm missing. Any idea why this might not be working? Thanks.
@@JohnnyMcPro Yes. The light on the front of the display is on, so I know it's getting power. I set it up exactly like in your video, with the adapter into the USB-C port on the back of the Studio. Just isn't working for some reason...
@@MattTavares ok, it should work if you purchased the exact one in my description, unless the display actually died! Do you have a way to test the display with the original dual-link DVI adapter via a different Mac?
@@JohnnyMcPro Yeah, I used the link you shared under this video and bought that exact one. Just plugged the display into my old Macbook with the dual-link DVI and it works just fine. Maybe there are different versions of the 30" apple cinema display? I'm baffled.
Probably already mentioned, but the curve radius of the edges of all apple hardware (and UI/software as well as many of the chargers/adapters/cords!) are the same, you just need to scale it up or down. (Yes, I know there of course are things that deviates, like the mice, Harmon Kardon speakers, HomePod, Apple Vision etc) But in general, it all stems from the original version of OSX, when Steve Jobs insisted on not having straight-edge rectangular window boxes (like in classic Mac OS), but instead wanted a "squircle"...which of course made it much more difficult for the designers and programmers of the graphic user interface...but it looked unique. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@chrisdunderdale You need to make sure it's a thunderbolt to USBC adapter and not a displayport to USBC adapter which uses the same port as Thunderbolt. I did buy a thunderbolt display but couldnt get it to work with my newer Dell laptop because apparently Dell firmware dropped support for it, so in the end I swapped for a 27" LED cinema display with just displayport and it works great with a simple adapter.

I’ve got two of them attached to a MacBook Pro.
why is your studio's power cable white?
It's actually the cable from an old school G4 flower iMac! It works with the studio ;-)

Apple should have always kept the design ( monitor silver housing ) Exactly the same and just updated the ports etc...
How about thunderbolt cinema display 27
I also reviewed that here! th-cam.com/video/InGXgPqLQH8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=97V4Wgx6r1IH0HYi
Can you use the Fireware connectors?
For modern Macs, they are pretty much useless without some sort of adapter chain. I have not been able to use them yet.
Johnny what are you doing with all the extra monitors? 😂
HAHA - I should probably do another giveaway or something...
Bigger question is… what did you do with those other displays? Buy and return or are you using all of them in your studio? That’s a lot of monitors.
Best one is the 5k iMac
I bought the Club3D product, plugged it in but cannot get it to work with my 30" Cinema Display. The screen goes from black to gray with some flickering. My new MacStudio has the M2 Ultra chip (I know you recommended not upgrading, but that choice was not mine to make). Club3D says their product will NOT work with the M3, but I only trying to get it to work with an M2 Ultra. Any ideas? Thanks -- and great videos BTW.
Very strange. I wonder if the power supply for your display is failing? Do you have the Apple dual-link DVI adapter to also test with?
@@JohnnyMcPro it is even weirder than that. If I connect the Apple Cinema Display to a Chromebook, the monitor works perfectly. That’s why I am lost.
watch my new video on M3 connectivity - this might work for you

@@RobertMorris-z3f I am similarly stuck. The 1510-A adapter works perfectly with my Intel i7 MacBook Air, but not with my M1 Mac Mini nor my M2 Max Mac Studio. I can tell it’s connecting, but as you described, it just goes to a backlit black screen. Did you figure out a solution?
Interesting. Wondering if anyone has tried using an HDMI-to-dual link DVI adapter...
Has anyone tried connecting the 27 inch Apple Cinema Display (that has Mini DisplayPort) to Mac Studio?
What are the chances of connecting an Xbox one to this monitor?
Hello all! I bought one of this recently. Anyone know the way to made this work well in windows? I tried to connect it to my gtx 3070 with dvi to hdmi adapter but the highest resolution that it gives to me is 1280x800. Any idea? Thanks!!!
Does your GPU have a USB-C connection?
Your method with the club adapter worked first time, thanks. One problem for me, when I check DISPLAYs in the system preferences, I am not getting the 2500 resolution, only 1800. I don''t see 2500 as a choice. there are 2 choices under scale, both lower than the 2500 I want. How do I see the full res of the monitor. I know my mac mini generates that much res.
What Mac OS are you running? Try holding the option button when selecting resolutions to see if more pop up.
I had one but the bottom backlight had went out. :(
Bummer! Probably best to find another used one on FB 🙂, rather than try to fix it!
Using that Club adapter though, won’t allow you to use the rear USB ports of the monitor, correct?
Correct. However, you can plug the USB straight into the back of the Mac Studio and it works.
Funny thing is, this old display matches the Studio better than the latest Studio Display, IMO.
I don't know about $50 in mint condition. The good condition ones go for a few hundred.
60hz or 30hz ? Thanks
60hz
Thanks for the helpful video, Johnny! Quick question: I just set up my new Mac Studio, and I tried connecting my 30" Apple Cinema Display (which I've had for years) with the adapter I got using the link in this video, but the screen is just black. The Mac Studio doesn't seem to be detecting the Apple Cinema Display. Not sure what I'm missing. Any idea why this might not be working? Thanks.
Do you also have the power supple plugged in for the 30" display?
@@JohnnyMcPro Yes. The light on the front of the display is on, so I know it's getting power. I set it up exactly like in your video, with the adapter into the USB-C port on the back of the Studio. Just isn't working for some reason...
@@MattTavares ok, it should work if you purchased the exact one in my description, unless the display actually died! Do you have a way to test the display with the original dual-link DVI adapter via a different Mac?
it could also simply be the power supply died, which happens also
@@JohnnyMcPro Yeah, I used the link you shared under this video and bought that exact one. Just plugged the display into my old Macbook with the dual-link DVI and it works just fine. Maybe there are different versions of the 30" apple cinema display? I'm baffled.
Thanks for Ukraine support
UPDATE: The Club3D adapter DOES NOT WORK currently with M3-based Macs (the newest Mac models)
Any suggestions for the M3?
I have a Thunderbolt Display, but I just can’t get it to work with my MacBook Pro M1 Pro - no idea what I am doing wrong, I’ve tried every combo
You are not connecting right. It will work if you use the right adapter
I run a Thunderbolt Display with no issues on my M1 MacBook! I use the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to USB-C adapter.
@@simonsangary684 is it the MacBook M1 Pro 14?
@@LeNico I am using the apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adaptor - but no luck. Is there another way of connecting it?
@@chrisdunderdale You need to make sure it's a thunderbolt to USBC adapter and not a displayport to USBC adapter which uses the same port as Thunderbolt. I did buy a thunderbolt display but couldnt get it to work with my newer Dell laptop because apparently Dell firmware dropped support for it, so in the end I swapped for a 27" LED cinema display with just displayport and it works great with a simple adapter.
It's thicc. I see them cheap. I saw 2 - 20" for $90.
30inch? Where?
£5, DVI - HDMI on eBay
Well it's a year later and I can't find one for under 400 bucks. Where the hell is this dude finding these for $50?
👍🏽
Tried it. Didn't work.
