When I was a kid learning violin (20 years ago) I thought it was cooler to play without a shoulder test. I also stopped playing violin a few years later because playing violin hurt. Now I play again with a rest. It’s just more comfortable.

It is! I've tried playing without one a couple of times, and it has yet to work with me. Not to say I don't love the sound, though!
