As a Once I agree. Mina really suits the elegant concept rather then the cute concept Twice used to go for. I’ve been loving her stage presence in the recent concert though as Twice have been doing more mature concepts and she really suits that style. (Don’t get me started on her and Tzuyus performance of 1,3,2 they rocked the stage!👏🏻)

I also think it is a pride thing as well. In Izone even though they were hugely popular there were still some people who disliked the Japanese members (and made it very clear) and she was never as pushed as some of the other members. In AKB48 she is back, center stage and is going to make a point of how much she's improved in the past three years.
Like no shade, I really like Hitomi but in IZ*ONE the members had bigger stage presence than herJapanese group. Also since she was in the Korean idunstry for a while, her skills in singing, dancing and so on improved quite a lot. But well with members like Chaewon, Yena, Sakura, Minju,... which have a huge stage presence it's not easy to stand out.

Honestly, for chaeryeong I personally had a thought that the other members of Itzy are too good at facial expression that made Chaeryeong looks dull sometimes but she is all in giving her best performance every single stage, she still has lots of time to improve shes still in young age so, praise for my girl Chaeryeong please looking forward to her in near future

I also think it depends on the concept or song. If it's something sexy like Aya or Gogobebe then she's very boring and her moves become sort of stiff or awkward but if it's a concept similar to Eclipse, then she does really well
She has great stage presence but it's just not all the time. Just like her dance she's inconsistent, I mean she is one of the members who have the title "performer" so she's not a bad dancer, but sometimes when comparing her to the other members she stands out, and not really in a good way, it's the same with her facial expressions. BUT girly ALWAYS delievers when it's her lines.

I kinda noticed that too 'coz I started to stan them yesterday. I mostly stan YG Artists so I kinda have their hype, swag, and their stage presence as my standards... but when I watched one of Aespa's performances, the atmosphere feels new to me, it's kinda gloomy i think? But I literally love them so I'll continue to stan them and witness their growth.
I do have something to say about Tzuyu. If we look at sixteen and Like Ooh Ahh, Tzuyu had pretty good stage presence back then however, after the flag incident... That changed, it all changed, she became less confident on stage because she was a minor who had gone through so much hate. She is slowly getting her confidence back which is probably why you enjoyed her more recent fancams. It is taking a while but she is getting a lot better and I am proud of her.

For me all Red Velvet members lack serious stage presence, except for Seulgi and Wendy. Yeri rarely brings enough energy into the stage and blends into the background very easily. Joy just looks stressed or like she is really struggling to dance or sing. Sis looks in pain sometimes and I think it might be because she doesn't like the concept or song and/or has a hard time portraying it. Zimzalabim was a different story. She was glowing during that era, her expressions improved so much and she looked so happy while performing, and I think it was because she said she loved the song . Irene always has the same cold expression on her face, like she can't wait to get it over with and just go home.
You're kidding??? You think Red Velvet all lack in stage presence? They're all amazing! Just look at the stages for Peek a Boo, Psycho, Bad Boy, Queendom and Pose. Joy even became Tik Tok famous for her beautiful presence in the Peek a Boo stage.
i think joy's stage presence has a lot to do with the outfits she's given. she's often given short skirts that ride up a lot and sometimes you'll notice her trying to pull them back down. in performances where she's given more comfortable clothing, such as the purple-themed queendom stage, you can really see her bring more energy + have much cleaner and larger movements. i do mostly agree with you though (as a major luvie)
Joy has stated that she has stamina issues and gets tired easily. I think she mentioned when reminiscing about one of the previous promotions that she had constant nosebleeds because the choreo was so demanding. For her simpler solo debut, she seems much more at ease
watching joy perform used to be so painful, i was always like wow pls hold it together for the 3 mins you're on camera. but then i realise their schedules are like 24 hours non-stop, no sleep etc and i dont think she coped well with it back then. i think she's much better lately.

Tzuyu had great stage presence and confidence at debut era before the flag incident. Alcohol-Free is the era where she started acting more like her old self. And i love her stages nowadays. Although i do agree with her having no facial expressions during other stages before Alcohol-Free. As for mina , it was right after her hiatus. So obviously she will need time to adjust to performing again.
I gotta say, i loved ning nings stage presence during black mamba era (she even became my bias because of it) but now she looks... Scared. Seriously, Moonbyul? You definitely haven't seen her concerts, sorry, but the thing about Moonbyul is that a lot of times she doesn't "live up" to people's expectations because she's not throwing sexy looks or doing super sensual moves, Byul deserves a lot more than what that is recognized.

I'm sorry but from what I've seen in their videos, æspa ―as a group and individually― either lacks stage prescence or doesn't have any at all. I don't know if it's their AI concept needing them to be expressionless, them being rookies without much experience or something else, but their performances looks kinda bland because of it. I've seen some of their fans say that we can't expect them to wink or exaggerate their facial expressions because of their AI concept. The thing is I'm not asking for lots of winking or anything like that, but I was at least hoping for some kind of captivating gaze to make me want to stay and watch their performance. I think that idols can have stage prescence without super exaggerated expressions, just like Blackpink's Jennie and former IZ*ONE's Sakura with their charisma and gaze. From what I've seen so far, I think Ningning has the most stage prescence because of how captivating eyes looks like whenevershe stares at the camera. æspa is becoming more and more successful now so I'm hoping for them to improve, most specially their stage presence ^-^
when it comes to kpop i think stage presence in general is a big problem. id say that 3/5ths of the artists have such BLAND performances to the point where I zone out. like just give me something else other than the default smile or stare you have, or maybe spice up the choreography in some sections to make it somewhat interesting? that being said though, I think that some of the artists that give lackluster stage presence are probably good performers but they end up being limited by the concepts, image of the group, and choreographies. in addition, the industry itself has very different practices when compared other ones like western pop as they give the artists a lot less artistic freedom and relaxation time which undoubtedly impacts the way people perform on stage. that being said though, there ARE idols that have less stage presence no matter what and id assume that would just come from a lack of passion for performing or maybe a lack of experience on stage.

Omg yes the Chaeryeong one really had to be saidddd. She's a great dancer for sure but her facial expressions are too limited. Like when you watch Yeji/Ryujin perform it almost mind blowing. Yuna is great with facial expressions and variations. But Chaeryeong/Lia. As you said Chaeryeong has good facial expressions at random moments (I think it's also the same for Lia she usually has this one cute smile she uses). I think Chaeryeong has improved significantly since the not shy era with her facial expressions. In dalla dalla and icy I didn't really notice her but in not shy I couldn't take my eyes off her
I think that her extreme talent in dancing kinda makes up for the facial expressions. Like when you watch her you get captivated by her body and the way she moves that you don’t really focus on what faces she’s making. (I hope that makes sense haha)

I'm more of a casual fan ever since 2020 and only sometimes follow groups - but I really like aespa and winter so I watch a lot of her fancams. The stern expression looks cool and confident at first, but if it's there the entire time it just doesnt do it anymore. Like yea it fits the concept, but...can she do ONE other expression at least? i love her dancing and everything, but this is what made me click out of a few fancams :(
dahyun has literally zero stage presence. she has this robotic smile that she always puts on, and she stares too much straight into the camera, and then she always looks at the camera from her left side face. and all of these expressions never change not even a bit. she's always the same every comeback.
I feel like Mina's stage presence is really connected with the concepts, since her voice tends to be more quiet and sultry as well as her facial expressions being more subdue, in a lot of twices early concepts (which are more bright and cute) it just didn't fit her, which is why you might like her more now even though she hasn't made much improvement which is understandable given the fact she is the lead dancer in twice from debut.
But she is the main dancer..her eyes convey a lot but this only in concepts like cry for me, or feel special but in upbeat concepts, like most of TWICE's songs her eyes just space out and her face gets robotic
@@stanlegendz I get what you're saying even though I personally don't think of her as robotic. Her smiles in general are much smaller and compared to the other members of twice it stands out. But she has never been one who relyed on very overt changes in facial expression so in more mature concepts she shines because things like little eye raise, smirks or looking away hit much harder vs. cuter concepts where all you can really do is give huge smiles and winks.

I do agree about the eye raise and little smirks here and there, she looks so chic while doing that. But that being said one can only observe that only in some parts of the song and like the op said she usually seems to stre at one object in the audience. Also in a group like TWICE where there is Jihyo, Momo, Sana and Nayeon being very dominant performers, it's very easy to identify the ones who seems very inconsistent or uninteresting.

I agree with everything exept for Moonbyul, I really think you haven't watched enough fancams because her stage presence especially during concerts or award shows is really good and definitely doesn't have a place in this video. The clip you showed is from a random festival (which Mamamoo used to perform at up to 4 times a day), so I guess that's why you thought her stage presence wasn't that good, even though I think it's perfectly fine... I think the main reason why some people claim that Moonbyul (and even sometimes Wheein) don't have stage presence or not a very good one is because they're in a group with members who are know as idols with some of the best stage presence in the industry (Solar and Hwasa), so I guess they sometimes can get a bit outshined. But this just goes to show how great Mamamoo are as a group and as individuals because both Wheein and Moonbyul would be considered as the members with the best stage presence if they were in any other group !

some people here are mistaking stage presence to facial expressions...and that's not it....stage presence is literally being able to hold the stage and in control of the performance...how you draw in your audience and make them believe to what you are performing.....a singer could just stand and sing and make the same expression the whole song with their eyes closed but still got that stage presence to command the performance .....stage presence, while it can relatively be improved through experience, some idols just lack them...and no amount of facial expressions can change that... It's all about the star power.

You're talking about ballad singers tho In Kpop specially now that girl crush is the trend, facial expression brings a big impact in the overall performance ,take Jennie for example, she's a good performer but is inconsistent with energy, but because she has a charismatic aura and phenomenal facial expressions she is one of the members to be considered with the best stage presence(along with Lisa) and is a stan attractor of the group
And even singers who just stand and sing still have to do facial expressions, they have to express the feeling of the song and be able to make the audience feel the emotions the song portrayed.
Facial expressions is part of stage presence. Facial expressions is the way to communicate to the audience, and to show the message of the song. For example, if the song is sad, and your expressions is smiling. Lol. Also, facial expressions are needed especially if you are standing still. Just like IU for example. Most of the times, she's just standing or sitting still, but you can still feel her emotions through her facial expressions and vocals of course.

nobody in aespa has stage presence really. giselle is the only member who looks like she's having any fun at all and also seems to be the only one capable of making more than one facial expression. it's a shame because they have such interesting and polarizing title tracks but their energy is non existent. their mama performance was honestly kind of insulting. I know they're a relatively new group but IVE debuted like a week ago and they're incredibly solid with stage presence. I hope it's possible for aespa to improve because as it stands they are all severely lacking in the stage presence department. Coming back to add that I watched their live performance of dreams come true and I still feel that giselle isnt given enough credit for being literally the only member who looks like she's enjoying herself on stage at all. I don't understand how so many people feel ningning has the best stage presence when she was literally staring at the camera completely devoid of emotion the entire time. Even if she seems charismatic at times she has no consistency. Winter cracked a slight smile so I guess she gave us something. Just very bizarre to watch nearly the whole group have dead lifeless expressions for such an upbeat song. You can't say their lack of feeling was for a badass concept. Moonbyul's stage presence in group performances is very lack luster for her to be considered an ace. In most time its just a hit or miss with her as she isn't consistent. Yes, but as time has changed and she has gotten older there isn't much to desire anymore.

I don't think there's someone who have bad stage presence in BLACKPINK. I think all of them have it, and different ways how they do it. Even Jisoo is good for me. Jisoo have far better stage presence than the idols who were mentioned in the video. The only problem with them is inconsistency, but they have good stage presence since debut, at least for me.

Some people don’t realize how hard it is for foreign idols to have all this confidence and power on stage while dancing when there singing/rapping in a language that is foreign to them. Some idols have master it like Momo and Lisa, but other idols like Mina, Hitomi, and Tzuyu haven’t yet despite being in the industry for over 2 years. Mina and Tzuyu really shine when there doing concepts like Cry For Me, because it’s a more elegant yet badass concept and the moves are more elegant then there other dances. Not to mention Tzuyu’s stage presence changed after the flags incident and Mina’s changed after she went on haitus. This is a great video! I agree with all the list but I gotta disagree with Moonbyul. We're forgetting that stage presence is not just about facial expressions, there are different ways a performer can rule the stage. There are the facial expressive performers, the vocal expressive performers, the dance expressive performers and the performers that hype and engage the audience through ad-libs. I feel like in this video you only focused on the facial expressions. Moon always says "scream" and "whooo", calls the audience to sing, makes fun adlibs and gets the crowd hyped every time she raps. She also has very expressive vocals, she envolves the audience in the song and makes them really feel it's meaning. (I also feel like she has a lot of great facial expressions performing so I'm a little confused about you criticizing that) If I had to criticize Moonbyul about her performances it would be mostly about dancing. She's a good dancer but, since she feels uncomfortable with girl group dances, often times her movements get shy and unfinished, wich damages the overall dance image sometimes. Some movements make her so uncomfortable that her expression seems out of it. (P.S. Her stage presence kinda reminds me of Suga, for example. They don't do crazy facial expressions and very attention calling movements, but they have full control of the crowd and set the energy with ad-libs, and have very expressive vocals)
I feel like because Mina deals with anxiety, it’s quite obvious why she seems almost uncomfortable on stage. Not that she doesn’t like performing but only sometimes, like at concerts when it’s more relaxed she starts smiling. (And looking less nervous)
this proves that being pretty isnt enough for stage presence. but for my personal opinion, every mamamoo members has fairly good stage presence and i always enjoy their live stages..one of other girlgroup that i think has good stage presence is blackpink esp lisa .. also it's a bit unfortunate bc aespa has good concept but they still lack expression.. they're just being unique and pretty, but their aura havent radiate that much yet.
Idk why but I actually like Winter's stern expression for wtv reason. It's like she doesn't need to do variety of expressions in order to make her presence known. Winter and Ningning are the usually the first ones to grab my attention in aespa performances (sometimes Karina as well). Giselle is the only member of aespa who has never stood out to me in any performance

I always felt like the blank face was a charm for specific idols (esp with mina and winter) it just fits their overall aesthetic imo like how mina is supposed to be the classy, elegant type in twice - but it would look weird if they were blank during a bright, peppy song. Hope you could make a video of idols who go overboard with their stage presence/facial expressions as well though I'm not sure if there are a lot of those,, for me it's pretty much just wonyoung.

the blank face looks good if it's used intentionally and only sometimes, but if it's during the entire song it just becomes boring to watch no matter the concept. great dancing can make up for this but most people will still be drawn to members that show emotion.

Not every concept needs aggression, other than that, especially when you understand the lyrics it becomes a bit out of place when he scrunches his face or does too much. stage presence is not subjective, you either have it or you do not. you can improve it but its just silly to pretend like an idol has presence when they clearly look lost on stage. i wish y'all would stop prefacing you vids or giving disclaimers by saying things are subjective. idols having skill or talent is not subjective, they either can or they cannot. it's also not subjective to say one idols is better at something than another, if they actually are. you can like one idol's style and technique more, but that doesn't mean they are better than someone else. Ex. Lisa is a better dancer better than Jisoo. This is a fact, it's not subjective. You can like Jisoo's dance style more, but Lisa is the stronger dancer, in performance, skill, and rhythm.
While what you say is true and the example you gave is also true, I think that stage presence can be harder to define and evaluate than singing or dancing. It's literally how well you attract people as performers and people can vary a lot more than musical notes or dance moves. Especially when ranking people with similar ability, some of their picks for "bad" stage presence can range from unwatchable to average for someone else. That's what people mean when they say it's subjective.
Very true! That's a very good example. One time I saw someone trying to say Jennie is a better dancer then Lisa and said it was just their opinion lol They may prefere watching Jennie dance, but any dancer can tell Lisa is far better. However, since there are several ways of engaging the audience, each person has a certain preference, wich is why it gets a little subjective sometimes. I feel like the person who made this video REALLY prioritizes facial expressions, so they didn't take into consideration other aspects of stage presence as well. For example, they didn't take into account being vocally expressive and being able to hype and engage the audience. So I disagreed with Moonbyul being on the list because she's very talented at engaging the crowd and hyping them up, wich is a little rare in kpop. She's very vocally expressive, putting a lot of emotion in her raps and vocals. And, though she isn't as expressive as her fellow member, she has some pretty good facial expressions.
Mina just seems like the type of person that doesn't express much with her face, and facial expressions are definitely a big factor that plays in stage presence. With that being kept in mind, she'll obviously shine with concepts that lean towards elegant/darker/haunting styles and melodies. And I don't really think she will ever change from being like this, *which isn't a bad thing* I really like her the way she is (she's my bias so) but I'm saying that because from her debut till now she's always just been like this, and I think it's only because she doesn't really have the natural ability to do facial expressions like Jihyo who's amazing at it. And is it a bad thing? No, not really in my opinion, I honestly much prefer that she does minimal facial expressions like small smiles and not big ones that you can notice like with Nayeon for example, instead of her forcing it throughout the performance. I feel like it would be a lot more upsetting and awkward to see, plus she looks comfortable like this even if her facial expressions aren't the brightest so I'm alright with it. I guess I don't find her fancams boring because her dancing just captivates me and it goes with her aura and vibe.

IVE (ex izone) member Jang wonyoung for me. Idk if it’s her or her agency but she’s way too concerned with being pretty and perfect, she doesn’t come across as natural for me. It’s like she’s afraid of messing up her hair, outfit or something.

I love Twice! They're my ults! But I have to agree with you with Mina, Dahyun & Tzuyu being on this list but I'm also gonna tell you my thoughts on their lack of stage presence: Mina: She's not a bad performer, I would say she's one of Twice's good performers (not the best, keep in mind) but like you said about her inconsistency with her stage presence, I agree with you, you'll either personally enjoy watching her fancams or get bored at it that you stop watching her but I think her inconsistency has something to do with the group's concept that they're taking. Take ICSM for example, the retro concept along with the luxurious stage sets and classy stage outfits fits perfect with Mina's elegant persona that she did fantastic on the stage (in my opinion). She's also an introverted and reserved person so that pretty much makes up for her inconsistency when she's on stage, you never know what's going through her head when she's performing (introverts tends to space out or overthink alot more when they're in public, I'm an introvert myself) I do however think that her stage presence decreased alot after going on hiatus due to anxiety, her More & More fancams which was her first fancams released after returning from her hiatus, like you said are really boring to watch and if you watch her old fancams, you can see that she looks so cheerful on stage before she was diagnosed with anxiety. Her facial expressions are on point tho... sometimes. She looks so alluring with her facial expressions. Dahyun: I would say she smiles alot on stage because it fits well with the group's cute and bright image, her smile is her best charm points because she makes the mood more brighter when she smiles but I do agree with you that she looks bland on stage when she's not smiling and yeah, she couldn't come up with different facial expressions because mature concepts don't really fit well with Dahyun's carefree and girl-next-door persona. That's all I'm gonna say. Tzuyu: She's my bias so I'm gonna sound a little biased. Her stage presence seems to be improving or at least she's making an effort to look lively on stage. I do believe that the reason Tzuyu looks so zoned out most of the time when she's performing probably has to do with what happened to her back in late 2015 to early 2016 when the flag scandal happened. That incident caused a huge toll on Tzuyu's mental health that she's been having trouble expressing herself when she's out doing Twice's activities, that includes performing on stage ever since. She keeps this blank facial expression on most of the time because she doesn't want to mess up the choreo cause if she does, it might cause another controversy (especially when you take into account that Twice used to get alot of hate from netizens back in 2016-2017). If you watch her debut fancams, you can see that she looks like she's really enjoying being on stage and she looks like she's having fun, that's before the flag scandal happened. Currently, it seems that Tzuyu's stage presence has greatly improved because she's been alot more confident since then but there still not the best but she can improve more, Alcohol-Free is her era, fight me!

true but that doesn't mean she has stage presence. stage presence doesn't mean you have to change expressions everytime and smile in between. it's your whole body language as you perform. some idols smile and show expressions but still lack stage presence if you get me. it's just your aura and body language on stage that attracts people.

Have you watched BP performances of Pretty Savage? All their performances are really good, and specially Jennie fancam, also their performances for The Show, I personally love Crazy Over You, SOLO, LTHM/You Never Know. Well, BP has many iconic stages, those are the ones that comes first to my mind right now, but their is Coachella, their iconic stage on Gayo Daejun, So Hot cover, Boombayah debut stage, and their concerts of course, and about awards I recommend their performances of 2016/2017.

when tzuyu first debuted, her expressions during like ooh-ahh were amazing and you can tell she was confident. i hate to mention it but the flag incident looks like it really shook her up; her confidence went down so much after it.

i’ve noticed it’s typically the members with an ‘elegant’ concept that lack in stage presence. they’re usually covert dancers and performers (gentler moves, less facial expressions, VERY heavily relying on eye contact with the camera, etc.) and it’s not a bad thing necessarily, it just doesn’t always work with the song and group concept! i think if the member’s personal concept clashes with the song’s particular concept at that time, it tends to look like they would rather be anywhere else.

As a Once I agree. Mina really suits the elegant concept rather then the cute concept Twice used to go for. I’ve been loving her stage presence in the recent concert though as Twice have been doing more mature concepts and she really suits that style. (Don’t get me started on her and Tzuyus performance of 1,3,2 they rocked the stage!👏🏻)

I also think it is a pride thing as well. In Izone even though they were hugely popular there were still some people who disliked the Japanese members (and made it very clear) and she was never as pushed as some of the other members. In AKB48 she is back, center stage and is going to make a point of how much she's improved in the past three years.
Like no shade, I really like Hitomi but in IZ*ONE the members had bigger stage presence than herJapanese group. Also since she was in the Korean idunstry for a while, her skills in singing, dancing and so on improved quite a lot. But well with members like Chaewon, Yena, Sakura, Minju,... which have a huge stage presence it's not easy to stand out.

I also think it depends on the concept or song. If it's something sexy like Aya or Gogobebe then she's very boring and her moves become sort of stiff or awkward but if it's a concept similar to Eclipse, then she does really well

I mostly stan YG Artists so I kinda have their hype, swag, and their stage presence as my standards... but when I watched one of Aespa's performances, the atmosphere feels new to me, it's kinda gloomy i think? If we look at sixteen and Like Ooh Ahh, Tzuyu had pretty good stage presence back then however, after the flag incident... That changed, it all changed, she became less confident on stage because she was a minor who had gone through so much hate.
She is slowly getting her confidence back which is probably why you enjoyed her more recent fancams. It is taking a while but she is getting a lot better and I am proud of her.

i think joy's stage presence has a lot to do with the outfits she's given. she's often given short skirts that ride up a lot and sometimes you'll notice her trying to pull them back down. in performances where she's given more comfortable clothing, such as the purple-themed queendom stage, you can really see her bring more energy + have much cleaner and larger movements. i do mostly agree with you though (as a major luvie)
Joy has stated that she has stamina issues and gets tired easily. I think she mentioned when reminiscing about one of the previous promotions that she had constant nosebleeds because the choreo was so demanding. For her simpler solo debut, she seems much more at ease

I'm sorry but from what I've seen in their videos, æspa ―as a group and individually― either lacks stage prescence or doesn't have any at all. I don't know if it's their AI concept needing them to be expressionless, them being rookies without much experience or something else, but their performances looks kinda bland because of it.
I've seen some of their fans say that we can't expect them to wink or exaggerate their facial expressions because of their AI concept. The thing is I'm not asking for lots of winking or anything like that, but I was at least hoping for some kind of captivating gaze to make me want to stay and watch their performance. I think that idols can have stage prescence without super exaggerated expressions, just like Blackpink's Jennie and former IZ*ONE's Sakura with their charisma and gaze. From what I've seen so far, I think Ningning has the most stage prescence because of how captivating eyes looks like whenevershe stares at the camera.

when it comes to kpop i think stage presence in general is a big problem. id say that 3/5ths of the artists have such BLAND performances to the point where I zone out. like just give me something else other than the default smile or stare you have, or maybe spice up the choreography in some sections to make it somewhat interesting?
that being said though, I think that some of the artists that give lackluster stage presence are probably good performers but they end up being limited by the concepts, image of the group, and choreographies. in addition, the industry itself has very different practices when compared other ones like western pop as they give the artists a lot less artistic freedom and relaxation time which undoubtedly impacts the way people perform on stage.
that being said though, there ARE idols that have less stage presence no matter what and id assume that would just come from a lack of passion for performing or maybe a lack of experience on stage.

I feel like Mina's stage presence is really connected with the concepts, since her voice tends to be more quiet and sultry as well as her facial expressions being more subdue, in a lot of twices early concepts (which are more bright and cute) it just didn't fit her, which is why you might like her more now even though she hasn't made much improvement which is understandable given the fact she is the lead dancer in twice from debut.
But she is the main dancer..her eyes convey a lot but this only in concepts like cry for me, or feel special but in upbeat concepts, like most of TWICE's songs her eyes just space out and her face gets robotic

But she has never been one who relyed on very overt changes in facial expression so in more mature concepts she shines because things like little eye raise, smirks or looking away hit much harder vs. cuter concepts where all you can really do is give huge smiles and winks.

I agree with everything exept for Moonbyul, I really think you haven't watched enough fancams because her stage presence especially during concerts or award shows is really good and definitely doesn't have a place in this video. The clip you showed is from a random festival (which Mamamoo used to perform at up to 4 times a day), so I guess that's why you thought her stage presence wasn't that good, even though I think it's perfectly fine... I think the main reason why some people claim that Moonbyul (and even sometimes Wheein) don't have stage presence or not a very good one is because they're in a group with members who are know as idols with some of the best stage presence in the industry (Solar and Hwasa), so I guess they sometimes can get a bit outshined. But this just goes to show how great Mamamoo are as a group and as individuals because both Wheein and Moonbyul would be considered as the members with the best stage presence if they were in any other group !

In Kpop specially now that girl crush is the trend, facial expression brings a big impact in the overall performance ,take Jennie for example, she's a good performer but is inconsistent with energy, but because she has a charismatic aura and phenomenal facial expressions she is one of the members to be considered with the best stage presence(along with Lisa) and is a stan attractor of the group

nobody in aespa has stage presence really. giselle is the only member who looks like she's having any fun at all and also seems to be the only one capable of making more than one facial expression. it's a shame because they have such interesting and polarizing title tracks but their energy is non existent. their mama performance was honestly kind of insulting. I know they're a relatively new group but IVE debuted like a week ago and they're incredibly solid with stage presence. Coming back to add that I watched their live performance of dreams come true and I still feel that giselle isnt given enough credit for being literally the only member who looks like she's enjoying herself on stage at all. I don't understand how so many people feel ningning has the best stage presence when she was literally staring at the camera completely devoid of emotion the entire time. Even if she seems charismatic at times she has no consistency. Winter cracked a slight smile so I guess she gave us something. Just very bizarre to watch nearly the whole group have dead lifeless expressions for such an upbeat song. You can't say their lack of feeling was for a badass concept. Dreams come true is a very bubbly song, they definitely should've been smiling.

Some people don’t realize how hard it is for foreign idols to have all this confidence and power on stage while dancing when there singing/rapping in a language that is foreign to them. Some idols have master it like Momo and Lisa, but other idols like Mina, Hitomi, and Tzuyu haven’t yet despite being in the industry for over 2 years. Mina and Tzuyu really shine when there doing concepts like Cry For Me, because it’s a more elegant yet badass concept and the moves are more elegant then there other dances. Not to mention Tzuyu’s stage presence changed after the flags incident and Mina’s changed after she went on haitus. Hitomi really shines when there performing Japanese songs, it’s gives her more confidence because she knows she can dance at her full level and not mispronounce words.

This is a great video! I agree with all the list but I gotta disagree with Moonbyul.
We're forgetting that stage presence is not just about facial expressions, there are different ways a performer can rule the stage. There are the facial expressive performers, the vocal expressive performers, the dance expressive performers and the performers that hype and engage the audience through ad-libs. I feel like in this video you only focused on the facial expressions.
Moon always says "scream" and "whooo", calls the audience to sing, makes fun adlibs and gets the crowd hyped every time she raps. She also has very expressive vocals, she envolves the audience in the song and makes them really feel it's meaning.
(I also feel like she has a lot of great facial expressions performing so I'm a little confused about you criticizing that)
If I had to criticize Moonbyul about her performances it would be mostly about dancing. She's a good dancer but, since she feels uncomfortable with girl group dances, often times her movements get shy and unfinished, wich damages the overall dance image sometimes. Some movements make her so uncomfortable that her expression seems out of it.
(P.S. Her stage presence kinda reminds me of Suga, for example. They don't do crazy facial expressions and very attention calling movements, but they have full control of the crowd and set the energy with ad-libs, and have very expressive vocals)

I feel like because Mina deals with anxiety, it’s quite obvious why she seems almost uncomfortable on stage. Not that she doesn’t like performing but only sometimes, like at concerts when it’s more relaxed she starts smiling. (And looking less nervous)

this proves that being pretty isnt enough for stage presence. but for my personal opinion, every mamamoo members has fairly good stage presence and i always enjoy their live stages..one of other girlgroup that i think has good stage presence is blackpink esp lisa .. also it's a bit unfortunate bc aespa has good concept but they still lack expression.. they're just being unique and pretty, but their aura havent radiate that much yet.

Idk why but I actually like Winter's stern expression for wtv reason. It's like she doesn't need to do variety of expressions in order to make her presence known. Winter and Ningning are the usually the first ones to grab my attention in aespa performances (sometimes Karina as well). Giselle is the only member of aespa who has never stood out to me in any performance

I always felt like the blank face was a charm for specific idols (esp with mina and winter) it just fits their overall aesthetic imo like how mina is supposed to be the classy, elegant type in twice - but it would look weird if they were blank during a bright, peppy song.
Hope you could make a video of idols who go overboard with their stage presence/facial expressions as well though I'm not sure if there are a lot of those,, for me it's pretty much just wonyoung.

the blank face looks good if it's used intentionally and only sometimes, but if it's during the entire song it just becomes boring to watch no matter the concept. great dancing can make up for this but most people will still be drawn to members that show emotion.

stage presence is not subjective, you either have it or you do not. you can improve it but its just silly to pretend like an idol has presence when they clearly look lost on stage. i wish y'all would stop prefacing you vids or giving disclaimers by saying things are subjective. idols having skill or talent is not subjective, they either can or they cannot. it's also not subjective to say one idols is better at something than another, if they actually are. you can like one idol's style and technique more, but that doesn't mean they are better than someone else. Ex. Lisa is a better dancer better than Jisoo. This is a fact, it's not subjective. You can like Jisoo's dance style more, but Lisa is the stronger dancer, in performance, skill, and rhythm.
While what you say is true and the example you gave is also true, I think that stage presence can be harder to define and evaluate than singing or dancing. It's literally how well you attract people as performers and people can vary a lot more than musical notes or dance moves. Especially when ranking people with similar ability, some of their picks for "bad" stage presence can range from unwatchable to average for someone else. That's what people mean when they say it's subjective.

Very true! That's a very good example. One time I saw someone trying to say Jennie is a better dancer then Lisa and said it was just their opinion lol They may prefere watching Jennie dance, but any dancer can tell Lisa is far better.
However, since there are several ways of engaging the audience, each person has a certain preference, wich is why it gets a little subjective sometimes. I feel like the person who made this video REALLY prioritizes facial expressions, so they didn't take into consideration other aspects of stage presence as well.
For example, they didn't take into account being vocally expressive and being able to hype and engage the audience.
So I disagreed with Moonbyul being on the list because she's very talented at engaging the crowd and hyping them up, wich is a little rare in kpop. She's very vocally expressive, putting a lot of emotion in her raps and vocals. And, though she isn't as expressive as her fellow member, she has some pretty good facial expressions.
Mina just seems like the type of person that doesn't express much with her face, and facial expressions are definitely a big factor that plays in stage presence. With that being kept in mind, she'll obviously shine with concepts that lean towards elegant/darker/haunting styles and melodies. And I don't really think she will ever change from being like this, *which isn't a bad thing* I really like her the way she is (she's my bias so) but I'm saying that because from her debut till now she's always just been like this, and I think it's only because she doesn't really have the natural ability to do facial expressions like Jihyo who's amazing at it. And is it a bad thing? No, not really in my opinion, I honestly much prefer that she does minimal facial expressions like small smiles and not big ones that you can notice like with Nayeon for example, instead of her forcing it throughout the performance. I feel like it would be a lot more upsetting and awkward to see, plus she looks comfortable like this even if her facial expressions aren't the brightest so I'm alright with it. I guess I don't find her fancams boring because her dancing just captivates me and it goes with her aura and vibe.

I love Twice! They're my ults! But I have to agree with you with Mina, Dahyun & Tzuyu being on this list but I'm also gonna tell you my thoughts on their lack of stage presence:
Mina: She's not a bad performer, I would say she's one of Twice's good performers (not the best, keep in mind) but like you said about her inconsistency with her stage presence, I agree with you, you'll either personally enjoy watching her fancams or get bored at it that you stop watching her but I think her inconsistency has something to do with the group's concept that they're taking. Take ICSM for example, the retro concept along with the luxurious stage sets and classy stage outfits fits perfect with Mina's elegant persona that she did fantastic on the stage (in my opinion). She's also an introverted and reserved person so that pretty much makes up for her inconsistency when she's on stage, you never know what's going through her head when she's performing (introverts tends to space out or overthink alot more when they're in public, I'm an introvert myself) I do however think that her stage presence decreased alot after going on hiatus due to anxiety, her More & More fancams which was her first fancams released after returning from her hiatus, like you said are really boring to watch and if you watch her old fancams, you can see that she looks so cheerful on stage before she was diagnosed with anxiety. Her facial expressions are on point tho... sometimes. She looks so alluring with her facial expressions.
Dahyun: I would say she smiles alot on stage because it fits well with the group's cute and bright image, her smile is her best charm points because she makes the mood more brighter when she smiles but I do agree with you that she looks bland on stage when she's not smiling and yeah, she couldn't come up with different facial expressions because mature concepts don't really fit well with Dahyun's carefree and girl-next-door persona. That's all I'm gonna say.
Tzuyu: She's my bias so I'm gonna sound a little biased. Her stage presence seems to be improving or at least she's making an effort to look lively on stage. I do believe that the reason Tzuyu looks so zoned out most of the time when she's performing probably has to do with what happened to her back in late 2015 to early 2016 when the flag scandal happened. That incident caused a huge toll on Tzuyu's mental health that she's been having trouble expressing herself when she's out doing Twice's activities, that includes performing on stage ever since. She keeps this blank facial expression on most of the time because she doesn't want to mess up the choreo cause if she does, it might cause another controversy (especially when you take into account that Twice used to get alot of hate from netizens back in 2016-2017). If you watch her debut fancams, you can see that she looks like she's really enjoying being on stage and she looks like she's having fun, that's before the flag scandal happened. Currently, it seems that Tzuyu's stage presence has greatly improved because she's been alot more confident since then but there still not the best but she can improve more, Alcohol-Free is her era, fight me!

Have you watched BP performances of Pretty Savage? All their performances are really good, and specially Jennie fancam, also their performances for The Show, I personally love Crazy Over You, SOLO, LTHM/You Never Know.

when tzuyu first debuted, her expressions during like ooh-ahh were amazing and you can tell she was confident. i hate to mention it but the flag incident looks like it really shook her up; her confidence went down so much after it.

i’ve noticed it’s typically the members with an ‘elegant’ concept that lack in stage presence. they’re usually covert dancers and performers (gentler moves, less facial expressions, VERY heavily relying on eye contact with the camera, etc.) and it’s not a bad thing necessarily, it just doesn’t always work with the song and group concept! i think if the member’s personal concept clashes with the song’s particular concept at that time, it tends to look like they would rather be anywhere else.
