Here after namjoon acknowledged his past mistakes in an interview in front of the president. To admit that he was problematic at the UN and to look more into why you were called problematic in the first place is brave and commendable. I personally think he is very reflective and an open minded person and is willing to learn and am glad he is like that.

Fun fact: You can stan a group and still hold them accountable. NCT are one of my ults yet every time they have an incident such as cultural appropriation, racial issues, or colorism, I hold them accountable if I morally believe it’s their fault. However, it’s okay to unstan if you’re uncomfortable.

I will say this about namjoon, I think it's more noble and admirable to admit to ones faults and see that your behavior and actions can affect others, I found his "apology" to be apt on the grounds that he simply didn't apologize, which anyone can do in sincerity or abstaince of sincerity, but rather took responsibility for his actions and words, which most people don't do

realizing what you did wrong and admitting it and growing and never making the same mistake again is so much more important than "im sorry" seriously like namjoon even talked about it at the UN. this is more than what any other idol has done, but y'all are just not ready to accept that

    • @panicatthemuser705
      @panicatthemuser705 3 ปีที่แล้ว +91

yeah seriously! We ALL make mistakes!! Everyone does!! except for idols it's caught on camera and people are way harder on them. Just because you say something offensive without knowing it is, doesn't mean you mean it. For the others idk because idk enough about them. But Namjoon acknowledged everything and evolved, which is the best thing anyone could do. It's good that this video is making people aware about what idols have done wrong in the past, but this cancel culture is killing me. Like, I've heard many people around me saying some things that could be a bit problematic but it's because they don't know. Honestly, if we had to cancel everyone who says one bad little thing, we would all be cancelled. Your reaction after it is what matters! Being educated and acknowledging your mistakes and wanting to do better is what matters to me. not for everything tho like if you kill someone or something 😂But for Namjoon's case, I know he's evolved, learned and that's what matters. We should seriously stop cancelling people for one little thing. I'm not even saying that bc I love BTS, it's just...If you cancelled every person around you who has done or said one little thing like that, you would be all alone. And also, by saying all that, I'm not saying I don't blame them for what they said or did. Not at all, it's just that I don't think they all deserve so much punishment. And as for the Jessi thing, what is wrong with her darkening her skin? Literally so many people do that, even Ariana Grande! >I don't think it's a probem, like, let the people do what they want? 😓Sorry for that long reply 😦

People need to realise that not everything is about the US. The words like 'cultural appropriation' or 'blackfishing' and their meanings literally don't exist in most countries outside america. They are not in the vocabularies, they just don't exist and nobody sees it as something out of ordinary. Especially in asian closed off countries such as korea, of course it happens. What matters is that idols stop doing it after being called out. They don't know until somebody tells them. However, times are changing and people are learning about the words trough social media, so fans have the right to keep the new gen of kpop idols up to a higher standard

Regarding Asian beauty standards your skin must be white , so white that you look like a dead person . That is the main beauty standard in Asian culture and it has been for centuries. Although these colorist “jokes” are very much normalized in Korea which isn’t okay at all and Korea is just now learning about other races and what is and isn’t offensive . I feel like we can hold our favorite idols accountable for the things they do but also to keep in mind why they think the way they do and the surroundings the grew up in . But in terms of black stereotypes that’s something we need to stop people from giving in to , not just to these idols but we need to stop them bye reaching beyond idols

Again, just because everyone is doing it, doesn’t make it right
It’s a shitty ideology on its own, regardless of racism
If Korea could prove how it’s useful to their society…, but they can’t because it’s not
They can get rid of it, just like the anti gay sentiments
And I’d rather fans condemn the practices than give them a pass
Hopefully that will lead the artist to change and hopefully enough of them have enough influence over the rest of society
People in the states are bigots, for various reasons
And I’d expect any fans, even foreigners, of US artists to call them out on it

@@luisannydelanuez334 Lol there's a fine line between critizing a religion vs it's people. You don't need anyone from a specific religion doing something wrong to criticize it. Like you are criticizing an ideology, not the people. It's the same as disliking a book you read. Does that mean you hate the readers of that book? No. And if you're a reader of a book and are offended by it's criticism, then you need to grow up and realize everyone has different opinions. Freedom of speech, you guys. And not saying that hating the followers of said religion, or being racist, sexist, etc. is included as freedom of speech, just hate speech at that point... For example I am an atheist and I dislike the religion I was brought up in, but I see followers of that religion all around me, every single day. I don't hate them. Just not a fan of their ideology.

@@runpheonix9926 i see, but that’s not what I was saying. If you hate religion, try not to bring down those who like it or who follow it. The Jay Park thing is a good example, God is very much real to us, and him asking people to worship him like we worship God is just offensive, doesn’t matter if he respects the people or not. And like you said, you can respect the believers, but just because you don’t like religion it’s self doesn’t mean that your should disrespect it because it offends the followers, whether you intended to or not. But I do think some aspects of religion should change, we need more freedom, and we need to stop sending people to hell, cause only God can do that. I’m very sorry about your experience with religion, I truly am 💜

I think it's an issue of their mono-cultural values clashing against our multi-cultural ones. These idols grew up with everyone around them saying that those thoughts are normal. That's why they say things without shame. Nobody has to challenge ignorant thoughts if everyone is saying it's okay, which is different from our culture where we have diverse schools of thought in constant war against each other.
When k-idols go on a show and say something ignorant and then the grown-ass adult hosts echo the same sentiment it makes my blood boil, but as a life-long anime fan (in the 2000s the anime scene was like the wild wild west of political correctness), I learned how to find a balance between having my own thoughts on things, understanding my place as a guest in someone else's culture, and sticking up for things that really matter.
International fans are viewing media from another culture that is not catered to us. In the west, we're used to debating stuff out and tbh we're likely to have subconscious colonialist attitudes, where if we don't like things about another culture we'll muscle in and tell them how to run things. I don't think it's our place to do that with Korean culture.
However, that doesn't mean we have to lap up the blatant ignorance either. We have to do what we think is right while understanding that we're just a viewer of someone else's culture.

Ofc when a kpop idol does something colorist it BOILS my blood but i also tell myself they don't know how offensive it is so we can't blame them. But we still gotta call them out bc a) colorism is wrong b) thats how they'll learn. Even if colorism is normal in korean culture it's inherently wrong so we gotta call these idols out. Also if an idol is mocking someone's race well we gotta call them out to bc if theyre speaking on that person's culture we have to do it as well. and it isn't fair for thme to mock certain races specifically black ppl, when kpop is built of black culture

This is a genuine question, but why are people always complaining about "idol apologies" not being good enough? Like what kind of apology would be good enough for you? What else can you do besides apologizing and explaining it in a situation where you've hurt people's feelings? You can't undo things you've done so the only thing is to say sorry. It's a whole another story if they still continue doing harmful things but not everyone is like that and still people complain about the "apology videos not being good enough".

I agree but that exactly where the problem is because most idols don't actually talk specifically about the problematic stuff, the just walk around it and get out the "I made horrible things in the past and I want to apologize" card, like they're not even mentioning the things they got called off because it would be admitting they were racist, homophobic, misogynist, etc.
I do believe that an apology video is a good idea, but if you are just going to be vague, if somebody else is telling you what to do and you're only doing it to save your career (and not because you actually hurt people) and keep doing it again and again cause you didn't Lear anything then I am sorry but that "apology" is useless and pointless

We say idols should apologize, but when they do you still drag them for their actions years later? That makes zero sense. Hwasa sang the n word because it was given in the lyrics by the staff. She doesn't speak English to know. And she wore a durag because it was in Rihanna's Fenty line (with even non black models wearing it), and she's a huge fan of Rihanna. But when someone on Twitter called out and discussed the Hwasa hate paradigm, I changed. The fact that many people are unaware of culture appropriation, including myself was revealed. Many countries still believe being dark skinned is ugly and right now that connotation is beginning to change.
If you would've asked me a year ago, I would've not been able to answer anything related to such issues. MMM has changed a lot, they're human and they're learning. They've incorporated so much into their music, and that's what changed my mind about them. So before you hold them back because of their mistakes, I'd like to ask you to see how far they've come. There's holding accountable and blatantly hating for someone's mistakes.

The video was also out of context. Her and the other people on the video said they didn't even know the man was black. If you watch the full video one of the girls even said she didn't know he was black literally seconds after Amber's comments and afterwards the same girl came out and reiterated that they had not seen the video and didn't know race was a part of the issue. This isnt obvious from the clips because they play the video for the viewers but the JK News crew and amber actually didn't see see video during their discussion. Only one of the guys saw it before. Also, Amber not only apologized after the controversy but after another member of the crew (the one who had already seen the video and knew the issue beforehand) pointed it out to her within that same video which the clip is taken from. And as another person said, Amber went to BLM protests and donated to BLM. She also called for prosecution of George Floyd's murderers. I don't see how people hate her so much and cancel her but bend over backwards for others who not only were racist but have never apologized or done meaningful action for the betterment of the lives of black people.

Ok with the first instance I had to do a lot of research before I could fully understand it.
Blackface- they wanted to pay their respects to the Bruno Mars video and yes I acknowledge that they did Blackface it was really wrong I understand that growing up in the country they did they wouldn’t know the deep rooted harm that causes to Black people. “They still should have known.” I hear this a lot, but when you grow up in a mostly homogeneous country that speak a different language, has a different education system and doesn’t have the history we have you can’t expect them to know what they did was wrong, especially with Black face sadly being normalized in South Korea. The compare if there was something offensive to them that is taught in their history and known by them and not us how are we to know it is offensive?
Hwasa saying the n-word- she didn’t know the meaning of the word and the company themselves placed the word in there for her to sing. For that one I blame the company. “She should know by now.” That was not only a long time ago when Mamamoo wasn’t really popular so they didn’t have much international fame as they do now so they were still limited to the ignorance of their society.
Solar skin ad- It was a face cream not a skin lightening cream.
Here’s a thread that explains it better than me

Fans called them out and immediately not only Hongjoong apologized but so did the company, KQ entertainment, and they immediately changed his hairstyle for the rest of the live stages they did. And he or any of the other members have not worn similar hairstyles since. I am really not asking for Kpop idols to be perfect all the time and make no mistakes because we’re all human, but take accountability for your actions, apologize, and don’t make the same mistake again. (i understand that you might not know the reason so it's okay) but it's not too much of a reaction for people to be mad because black hairstyles like dreads aren't 'just hair' like many people say. back in slavery times black people were taken forcefully from their countries and abused/tortured very badly and had their culture erased from them, one of the only things they had left was their hair which they used in many ways such as keeping and hiding food inside their braids and also to style creatively which in a way was a symbol of power to them because black hair is very different from others and these styles were used to protect their hair (which is why non-black people shouldn't attempt to do their hair like that, their hair isn't made for those styles and it'll damage it) there's more to the story because black history is a LOT but i hope you understand that it's hurtful for non-black people to style their hair in black hairstyles and ignore the dark history of what black people went through and still go through. you're right that every culture has things that are taken by others but this one is different. it's a symbol of power and strength against the racism that black people went through and STILL go through (i also hope you know that it's not just a problem for k-pop idols to have dreads but non-black people in general, it's just that you have only seen it in k-pop) i hope this makes sense and i encourage you to research on black history by yourself because it's very burdensome for black people to have to explain their trauma to non-black people. let me know if there's anything else you wanna know and sorry if this is long but it's important to say lol

Ok but Namjoon was literally addressing the stuff he did that could've hurt others which he didn't intend to do so and you're ignoring it like? What does 'holding accountability' mean in your dictionary? The words "I'm sorry" aren't necessary in an apology. Believe it or not, BTS has apologized for the mistakes they did in the past and they have been very considerate about everything after then. Change is what matters. They did change, they did realise what was wrong and they have genuine hearts. They are not bad people. And here's Namjoon's entire words that he spoke during that vlive that you chose to ignore:
"RM's hello 2017" Namjoon addressed how his mindset in the past has been problematic:
"I had a lot of thoughts. I did, in the beginning. When others talked about me in a criticizing way, rather, when others gave unforgivable feedback, it could be advices. Or criticism. It could be condemnation. When I heard so, I felt like this in the beginning... 'Why? Why?'. Because I thought, I have been like this. I thought I've never caused any trouble or inconvenience to others. I've never thought that way. Because I studied hard when I was young, I worked hard on music, I performed hard. I liked playing games. That's what consisted of my life. At school I was an obedient student. I did well at school so teachers liked me. I never fought with classmates and I was around with friends.
I've never thought that my behaviors or music or words could hurt others, or cause inconvenience to others. I've never thought that way. As I went through the year 2016 I came to think about that. My words or behaviors, regardless of my intentions, could cause troubles or hurt others feelings. In the process, I thought I need to hold responsibility for that and I need to think about such things. What I said or did would not be undone. I thought so. Then I learned how to admit myself. It was hard to admit that I could hurt others' feelings. It took a long time. I didn't like to admit that I was wrong. Rather than I was wrong, it was hard to admit that I could hurt others' feelings. It was hard to admit because I've never felt that way.
In the beginning, when I was faced with such criticism, I thought like, 'Why? I did it for a reason'. Now, as I said, I feel much better about my feelings and emotions. Now, when I hear something about me, even if its a criticism or condemnation, I am able to think about what made them say so. 'What did I do wrong? What I did caused others to feel uncomfortable? What made them criticize me?' I am now able to think like that. For now, I can't talk about what was changed in detail. Still, I may have another chance to talk about later. Anyways, to become a better person, I need to hold responsibility for what I do. I need to change my mindset. I need to change my way of thinking if its wrong. I learned I need to hear from many people. I mean, I came to think like that. Now when I do something, I think, 'how would people feel about my act?' and then I take action.
That's why I was able to release 'Always'. The lyrics are very defensive. I wrote that a year ago when I felt stressed. A year ago, or so. I wrote the lyrics back then. I am now able to release it because I no longer feel that way. Now I feel relaxed.
Anyways, now or in the future, I want to be an artist that has good influence. I hope my music would help others. So, I decided to go in a better way. My goal for 2017 is to be mature in many ways, including my way of thinking. I want to become a person who thinks more righteously, and make greater music. Those are my goals."

She makes me feel like she sees us as hypersexual, nasty and rough people, who use nonsense language like AAVE isn't a grammatical dialect, AND she capitalizes on that image.
She hasn't even been in Korea for the entirety of her life! She went to Korea from US when she was 15, so I would've hoped that she'd be at least a bit aware of what it means to appropriate the culture of the people who lived in the same country as her for the first 15 years of her life.

The fact that cultural appropriation isn't only all about black people, braids, the n word, and stuffs. It also included other culture and religion too. Example how in blackpinks HYLT they used the indian ornaments as aesthetics. But that's fine until u see the Lord ganesha literally ON THE FLOOR where Lisa was rapping. It's so disrespectful to use an god as an aesthetic, that also on the fucking floor, it's super disrespectful towards the hindu indians. It's not the first time anyways. But people only call out for cultural appropriation when it comes to black things. It's also about other culture too, and how they disrespect this. We usually skip that Indian, Egyptian appropriations. Which is very sad, and if we ignore it, it would happen even more.

I think our biggest problem with the n-word is that a LOT of these rappers say it because they hear their favorite artists from the west say it. They aren’t going to go and look up the meaning, they will think it’s just a word that’s commonly used. I believe that If it’s a bad word to say for one group of people, it should be bad for everyone to say it.
I had to think about this too: all these black rappers that use the n-word in their songs do not care who say it because those people are putting money in their pockets. They’re streaming their music, buying concert tickets, voting in shows, they don’t care as long as they’re making money🤷🏾‍♀️

tbh,, armys got the namjoon apologising part wrong. he’s actually owning up to his mistakes,, and he explains it,, knowing that he’s wrong. he might not have apologised,, but at least he knows he’s in the wrong,, and that’s alrdy quite alright imo

Just noticed how almost all of these were solo artists kpop stans like to call: original, theyre just themselves, they dont act or have a role like other idols
