At what point do you stop pouring money into your boat? We are the bad guys sometimes cause the owner isn't ready to hear that the mechanical life is getting near the end without it costing an arm and a leg. It's not easy being honest when you know the owner loves the boat so much.

    • @islandhopper00
      @islandhopper00 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

@@WillFixThat I n my opinion, that's up to the owner. If they ask you to do something, do it.
I just say, you need a estimate sheet that has a disclaimer on it in bold letters.
THIS VESSEL IS MECHANICALLY AT THE END OF LIFE, THERE IS NO SAVING IT BEYOND REPLACEMENT. ANY WORK PERFORMED ON THE VESSEL IS CONSIDERED A PATCH JOB AND IS DONE AT THE OWNERS DECISION. THIS COMPANY IS KIND ENOUGH TO TRY TO HELP BUT ULTIMATELY WE RECOMMEND TOTAL REPLACEMENT.
      LOL.
Then you put a surcharge on the estimate that reads, for frustration of working on parts and engines that are not fixable.
You cannot help people that don't listen, and you certainly can't fix stupid.

@@WillFixThat I get that. There are thousands of recruiting services that can easily find you a qualified technician. Those recruiting services plus plus highly skilled technicians that might need to relocate cost alot of money but thats not a problem. If your super busy and you raise your prices then some work might drop off making you less overwhelmed and improving your customer response times which is a business benefit and customer experience benefit. Then with the extra money you can make a quick and quality higher. There may be emotional glass cieling hang-ups with this but the solution is just that.

@@toddgittins5692 boats don’t have to be expensive or complicated for them to be safe, functional, and enjoyable. The best boats are the most simple boats. “Cheap” is a term quantified by one’s financial situation. I’m assuming you’re implying that 60k is cheap which is fair but my point was that all boats require endless maintenance regardless of the perceived value. Boats are always trying to do three things to themselves. Sink, Burn, Rot.
The main reason I gave mine away was due to lack of affordable dock space. After Covid the cost to slip a boat in south Florida exploded. My first slip in Fort Lauderdale was $550/mo on the New River in 2019. Now you can’t touch anything for under $1500. In Palm Beach area it’s worse because there’s less private dock space available. Regardless of the cost of the boat these costs are fixed. Not to mention haul out fees, insurance, bottom cleaning….so even if you own a simple affordable boat it’s still very expensive to keep it.

As a lifetime boater, I hear that same ole saying: the best two days of owning a boat, well you know the rest of it. I absolutely love speaking with those folks because after a short period of listening to them it becomes obvious why they should never own a boat of any type. Many people think that boat ownership is similar to owning a vehicle, it’s not even close. Boat ownership takes on the meaning of understanding the product and the responsibilities of taking care of an item that ultimately sits more than being used. Boat ownership is great and I’ve enjoyed many vessels in my life but it takes patience and learned knowledge to be a happy boat ownership.

@@jehines3 I have not seen it out of the water. A diver went down to clean the bottom and he didn't notice any problems, but he wasn't asked to look for blisters at the time. He was just there to clean the bottom. The current owner had it out for a survey 7 yrs ago. Surveyor said there were actually about 80 blisters which were barely visible when the hull dried out, but visible when it first came out and the hull was wet. Some blisters were between 2" and 5" in diameter and some were smaller. The surveyor recommended fixing the ones that were 2"-5". Probably because the owner didn't want to spend much money at the time. The invoice from the yard lists 15 hrs to "epoxy the voids." No mention of just how many were over 2" in diameter. I just assumed about half of them. 15 hrs doesn't sound right. It seems like it should take much longer so I think "epoxy the voids" is a quick fix and not a proper fix. If they are very shallow blisters then maybe that is adequate? I have seen videos where layers of fiberglass are used to build up deeper voids. How long did you need to leave the boat to dry out? Where are you located and what is the climate like? I am in California so I was hoping it would dry out fast. Thanks for your advice.

lol Chesapeake bay. Maryland if i remb right, but how where the crabs? had some snow crabs tonight myself, was good lol
and i bet the brown water was stinky with bacteria
side note worth thinking about tho... as seen on sailing with the wynns if i remember right.... they had a bad current draw/ leak from a water pump that wasn't bonded, causing extra wear/tear/ electrolysis on all metal/bonded parts of the boat... worth investigating for the hr or so u spend.... maybe 2-3 if it was my boat and worth $$$....

Well old yachts aren't total losses you can always turn them into unique cabins once you put a decent foundation on land and they're fairly weather resistant since I have to be on the water all the time so I don't see a problem with it except for the getting it to where it needs to go potentially but thankfully that usually isn't an issue ever since people started wanting shipping containers everywhere for do-it-yourselfers but I could be wrong still good luck to you you're going to need it probably in this fourth turning

about 6 years ago before covid I started looking to buy a great loop boat. Carver silverton something like that I saw some boats that had been setting at slips sometimes for years with out any maintenance . When I would go look at the boats Im like. This needs a lot of work I can see and worried about work that I cant see. If I offer you this amount of $ and pay for a pull out would you be interested. Oh no wont do that wont come down on price take it or leave it so I left funny thing my search went on for nearly two years and the same boats would still be up for sale getting worse. Actually went I decided to buy a small run around 17' bayliner I ran into that same issue in over drive. Boats on trailers in peoples yards just sitting there rotting away. But they wont sell it for less then the queen mary and how dare you say its has problems your not going to scam me. These are boats the owner would be lucky to find the key for and has let the cover (if it had one) rot away. Boat people can be some of the worst

I often see electrolysis mistaken for galvanic corrosion. No, as far as putting money in, boats depreciate like nothing else. I do not understand the priorities sometimes. Did a big expensive cut a hole and remove the engine overhaul on a 1500 hp diesel, came in locked up, cracked sleeve, coolant in the oil, heat exchanger failed (both engines) suspect bonding issues and total lack of maintenance- did not want to have the engine properly painted, the bilge cleaned and painted while engine out, but they spend money on a new wine cooler and interior crap! Engine room looks like shit and any surveyor will point that out when they go to sell!

@WillFixThat this is the answer I know but don't understand. Hence the reason MOST older people don't think much of the young men these days. Businesses don't think they are trainable, and certainly don't want to invest in them.
What is it going to take to get young men to step up and pull their own weight. I listen to young guys crying they don't make enough money but offer no marketable skills. Why is that? Leads to the statement young guys are lazy.
