Here's a tip, prior to painting, put hot tap water in a bucket then set your rattle cans of paint inside , shake cans and repeat until cans are warm, the paint will atomize and flow way better plus every bit of the paint will be used! Especially if you use bedliner or undercoat paint.

Good video! I already did my old Lund, but I followed the same basic process as you showed. I like the Krylon and Rustoleum Farm and Implement paints; very affordable, easily available, and very durable. For small aluminum boats, a decent looking paint job doesn't require paint that costs $120 per gallon.

I repainted an aluminum boat a while back and used spray on bead liner over a textured finish on the interior of the boat. It turned out pretty good.

One more tip to add thanks to my dad in 1983. Rivets. He made a very solid 2inch + dowel from solid heavy metal. I should add the photo of it. Then with two guys one with the heavy dowel and one with a hammer and punch. Tap every rivet to seal up the boat. Ya it takes a while but my leaky boat was water proof. Once you find the first rivet together. You just say next. Tap tap. Next. Tap tap. Do this before you paint. I've had two of these tin boats and after selling the first one, I watched it drive off and said to myself, I'm going to regret this. And I did. So luckily my dad had one and gave it to me before he passed in 2004. I'll never sell it. One thing I miss from my old one is the extended wooden seat in the front. Which also was great for stuffing things under and of course. Using that seat to lean back on like a recliner. Using extra old life jackets for padding.

Great results, really like the color. I have an old aluminum boat, and she looks rough, but I am too sentimental to paint her. The faded paint is from being out in the summer sun on high adventures. The dents and dings are stories and character of a boat that has stories to tell. Big fish have been caught and even bigger fish got away for next time 😊

I've owned several aluminum boats in my lifetime and I even camouflaged a few that I hunted out of. I never repainted any of the others, because the factory paint was still in good condition. My last boat, a 14 foot Proline V-bottom, has no paint at all. This is the way it came from the factory and since I no longer hunt, I like it. When I first bought it (used) I replaced the wooden seat tops and they now have side by side pine 2X10's left natural and painted with clear a spar urethane. I just buffed the aluminum a little to make it shine and it looks great. After looking at many boats since then, I've come to realize that I'm the only person on my lake that has an unpainted aluminum boat!

This is pretty much the same method I used on my boat. Mine is a 16' and I painted the inside a matte gray and the outside a semi-gloss red. I also chose to leave the bottom unpainted as that was where the most wear would be.
It's been good to go with no scratches since 2021.

This is excellent information for anyone considering refurbish8ng an aluminium boat. I'm doing my 13.5' Quintrex, and I've never attempted painting aluminium in the past. I was looking for a matt or low sheen option for the interior to reduce glare. The hammered finished looks excellent. I'm leaving the outside in brushed aluminium with probably 400 grit finish, maybe polish up below the waterline for really gliding through the water. Thanks for sharing 👍

Use a self etching primer and then go back over it your color of choice. But clean everything with acetone and/or mineral spirits before you paint. Did a flat bottom boat like what you’re asking about eight years ago. Used a satin finish paint on the outside. Then hit it with some clear coat. Six years later still looks great. But you have to take your time and clean everything. I used duplicolor from O’Reillys.
Then did the wrinkle paint on the inside and laid down some of the boat decking sticker stuff in a diamond pattern a few years later could not be happier with the results

  • @ThePlantGuy

    • @fishingduoproductions

There are coatings you can apply to delay oxidation. Oxidation will definitely dull the shine so if that is important to you then you should coat it. However, I find it's less expensive on small boats to just take a fine grit sand paper to it ever year or two to restore the shine. But if you don't, oxidation won't reduce the integrity of the hulls strength and it still looks pretty good after many years.
      Thanks for watching!

Also can recycle amazon packing paper , that's what i use when restoring vintage tractors . I collect the packing paper every time , thank you Amazon !! With all the work people put into painting and then paint it RED the worst color as it fades in short period of time now they end with a crappie red
